Today's broadcast is C1E95 for VibeOff Vrijdag, May 9th, 2025. Today's broadcast will be a one-time-only special twist on a FaceOff Friday, where, instead of comparing different versions of the same track against each other, we're comparing pairs (and occasionally trios) of different songs against each other which either have similar movements, or melodies, or instrumentation, or simply just vibes and asking you, the listener to not only tell us which one you like better, but whether or not the comparisons are even valid, and how strongly or weakly if so. So, in lieu of an 8th and final FaceOff Friday episode, Nerd Noise Radio is pleased to present: VibeOff Vrijdag (Vrijdag = the Dutch word for Friday). See the show notes for a link to a document which will allow you to grade me on these comparisons if you so choose! Well, this is it, folks - our very last episode of Channel 2, taking a long….VERRRRRRY LONG last look back through the entirety of our show's history, and featuring at least one track from every single episode! This episode really is obscenely long - just shy of 5 ½ hours! But it covers so much history, and is our way of putting a bow on everything. So we hope you will stick with us for the entire thing! Presented in a hybrid-format of Ch 2-style talkie portions and Ch 1-style mini-mixtapes, and broken up by season. ------------------------------------------------------------ Intro Segment [00:00:00 - Thanks for having joined Hugues and I on this incredible journey of Channel 2! We've been delighted to have you and to have occasionally heard from you! But while one door closes, another door remains open for a little while longer. The Channel 1 show….goes on for one more regular season and then an additional year of retrospectives! Join us again (probably early January) for C1R7 - “The Best of 2024”, and again, later in January for C1E91 - a Mishmash Monday originally planned for November of this year, but pushed back to make room for Hugues' twin episodes! Delicious VGM on Noise from the Hearts of Nerds! And wherever you are…..Fly the N! Cheers!

Delicious VGM on Noise from the Hearts of Nerds. And wherever you are - Fly the N!
It's almost time again for our end-of-year “Best of Season 2” (C2R2), on Channel 2, where Hugues and I will pick a combined 22 tracks from the 72 total which we featured across all of Season 2 in calendar 2022. Like last year, we'll each pick 2 tracks per episode (one per episode per host from each of the two hosts), as well as each picking one wildcard track to serve as our episode opener and closer tracks. To build a little excitement for that episode, as well as to give you a handy refresher of everything we did this year, we have put together a music-only recap of the entire season's output (links will be included to each of the “full episodes” with Hugues and I's dialog included). Of the 72, we already know which 22 we're going to feature as “Best of”s, but as there'll be no spoilers on it, you'll have to just guess and wait and see and hope your personal favorites make our cut! ;-) You can also email us at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com, or reach out to us on social media telling us what your top 11 would be (one track per host per episode, plus one wildcard), and if we get some submissions before recording time, we can mention them in the episode (or if we get enough of them, perhaps we can even make an Archive SUPER BONUS release out of them). Today's Broadcast is C2E10 for Theme Thursday, October 20th, 2022. Today's episode (our final “normal” episode of Season 2 [calendar 2022]) will be a focus on Sega CD music to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the system's North American launch. Today's Rerun is C1E15: "Welcome to the Disc Level Disc Level" - our first ever "Super Sized Episode" back before they all were, AND our first ever "Nerd Noise Cross Over" marrying the concepts of a "Theme Thursday" (Sega CD Music) with a "TwoFer Tuesday" (two pieces per game) - only I totally cheated with Sonic CD at the end, treating JP/EU-only, NA-only, and universal musics as separate "twofers" resulting in this episode going out on a six track, Sonic CD "blue wave". :-) Enjoy! For this season finale, Lee takes a look at some of his all-time favourite side scrolling beat 'em ups! Of course, the show is bolstered by an array of requests and other unrelated choices, which all come together to form a particularly bass-heavy playlist. The show will return with a fourth season on July 17th, 2020; allowing Lee to catch his breath and focus a little on ST2. Hopefully, this closing mix of VGM joy will satisfy until ST LIVE comes back!#DefundNewscopThis week's playlist:Title – David Wise [Battletoads]Dervish D (Multisid) – LMan (originally composed by Vangelis) [Commodore 64 Remix Classics - 80s Synth Hits, Vol. 1]Comets That Are Crazy – Hubbard & Donne [Hubbard ‘80]Thing on a Spring – Rob Hubbard [Commodore 64 Sid Anthology, Vol. 3]Echoes in My Mind – Mandrill [The Warriors]Saints of Rage - Stage 3 – Malcolm Kirby Jr [Saints Row IV]If You Dare – Megan McDuffee [River City Girls]ROUND 4 INDUSTRIAL AREA 2 ROUND 6 – Manami Matsumae, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi, Yasuaki Fujita, Hiromitsu Takaoaka, Yoko Shimomura, Junko Tamiya and/or Harumi Fujita [Final Fight]Moe's Tavern – Norio Hanzawa [The Simpsons]Kick ‘n' Punch – David Wise [Battletoads/Double Dragon]Cluffy Flouds 1 – TDK [CyberSpeed Unleashed]Northern Kremisphere (Restored) – Eveline Novakovic [Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!]Thirty Seven After Six – Mike Morasky [Half-Life: Alyx]Deep Jungle – Yoko Shimomura [Kingdom Hearts]The Instinct – Robin Beanland [Killer Instinct]Mach Rider – Hideki Kanazashi and/or Hiroaki Suga [Super Smash Bros. Another extended play, very non-standard format, very talk-heavy retrospective of the first 49 episodes and three years of the show - in the style of an old W.A.R.T. Radio episode meets The Diad Presents meets Sound Test Roulette meets VGM Jukebox – multiple short micro-music-blocks with talking between. Part 2 is "personal picks" - picks that I really like myself, most of which were near picks from my previous two "Best of 20XX – John's Picks" episodes - 1 track from each previous episode (minus best-of episodes), tracks chosen by either John or the listeners in any "Best of 20XX" installment are ineligible for The Golden Episode (and if a track that appeared in say, Episode 2, was chosen, but it also appears in Episode 17, 36, and 48, it is stricken from the eligible pool all the same. Each track must be totally unique to a "Wayback Wednesday" episode of NNR, which narrows the playing field, both in terms of tracks I can pick for myself as well as tracks I can pick for the listeners (part 1). Each micro-music-block will be five tracks long, and each will represent the episode which it comes from. Rather than the usual NNR practice of focusing on the music block creating a logical, pleasing "flow", the Golden Episode (both parts one and two) will focus instead on playing the tracks in episode order. So they won't flow nearly as well (unless by happy accident). But they will run in the order in which they appeared in the history of the show. Differing priorities this time. A typical NNR episode is all about a "journey through sound", and of course, this episode is that as well to some extent, but the real priority here is not about being a "journey through sound", but instead, is about being a "journey through time". Fortunately for us, the accessibility of fighting games are as close as going to your local arcade, video game shop, or the comfort of your own home. either being on the sidelines watching or actually taking place between an intense and riveting face-off between a game of street fighter, tekken or king of fighters, fighting games are one of gaming’s most celebrated and passionate genres. WARNING: This submission is SUPER-DUPER LONG – like “Insane in the Membrane” long!!! Like, take a week to make the track list long!!! It’s the musical version of a “tl;dr”. And now for a non-musical version of one, here’s the explanation (with track list to follow): If you’re new to Nerd Noise Radio, and feel this is oppressively long, fear not (and certainly unsubscribe not)! This is not at all indicative of a standard episode! Typically, episodes generally find themselves in the half hour to an hour and a half range. This is a once-a-year super-duper track-fest that is as long as it is because I couldn’t be more committal! I created a list of all “candidate” tracks from 2017 that I would consider for a favorites episode….and ended up with a whopping 122 tracks! For perspective, an ordinary episode of NNR is anywhere from 20-35 tracks. So, I started pruning back the list with the goal of hitting 40 tracks, mayyyybe 60 at the extreme. I started by cutting the tracks on my list that were already featured via listener picks on C1E25: The Best of 2017 since you, the listener just heard them a few days ago. I did include a list at the very bottom of these notes featuring the tracks that were in C1E25, and were therefore cut from my list so you can know which tracks they were. I gradually whittled my list down to 70 tracks, but couldn’t think of any more to cut. And besides, with so many tracks that I would’ve wanted featured absent already, and so many “me tracks” already featured on C1E25, I felt like I was beginning to approach the precipice of this not being worth doing anymore if I cut too many more out. It wouldn’t be representative enough, especially when there was already a good representation of “my tracks” selected by the listeners in the proper Channel 1 episode….. …..and thus….. ……..a 70 track, 3hr and 23 minute long music block JUGGERNAUT!!!! Actually, 71 tracks! I realized belatedly that in my quest to trim it back, I trimmed out all the NES tracks….and we just couldn’t have a Best of 2017 episode without AT LEAST ONE NES TRACK, am I right? There were already a pair of FDS tracks which, to be fair, is just an NES and then some, but it’s still not quite the same, don’t you agree? So, our opening track was a last second addition to make sure we got some real deal NES glory in this monster. I hope you’ll feel it fits. This is already long enough that I can’t feature it on the dedicated Channel F feed, so it will only be appearing on the All Channels Feed, on YouTube, Twitch, Archive, and Blogspot. Also, due to the extreme length, the customary intro and outro of a typical Channel 1 episode were cut, meaning that this episode is pretty much JUST the music block! If you’re catching this via the “video-ified” version on YouTube or Twitch, I will still include pop-ups for each track. But if you’re listening to an audio-only version, like podbean (the All Channels Feed), or Archive, then the ONLY place where you will find track info is in the show notes! So, they are more important than ever! In the case of YouTube, which has a character limit for descriptions, I fear that I may run afoul of that, and may need to move the tracklist to the comments section instead. So just keep an eye out for that. If you don’t see a track listing in the description, then you know where to look next. :-) All that said, I actually am really proud of this track list – particularly the track ordering. We start out with a fun, happy block, followed by dark, then intense, then weird, and then…..well, you’ll just have to tune in to follow the carefully curated ebb and flow and weave of this winding, twisting musical journey. I will say that other than our very last track, which has a PERFECT “goodbye” feel, we wrap things up with a jazz block. So, it’s truly an “all over the world” musical experience! And how we get from happy, to dark, to intense, to weird….and then to jazz is a question you’ll have to find out for yourself by listening. If you can survive the 3 ½ hour non-stop trip, I promise you that it is the biggest, boldest, broadest, richest, most ambitious journey I’ve taken you on as a podcaster! Lastly, I made sure to get at least one track from every episode in here. Had I been going by pure preference, the track list may have looked a tiny bit different (though not much), but having as my secondary goal to get every episode involved, I made the list the way I did, picking my favorite track(s) from the episode not already featured on C1E25. In the case of C1E7 (the Sword of Vermilion soundtrack), my favorite track, Statts, was already taken, and it became a multi-way-tie for second favorite, so I just chose a track that I thought would go well in the mix. I chose Dungeon 2. Anyway, I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it! 2017 was a great year for the program, and I’m convinced you’ll find 2018 even better…..I know I do ---- which means this task for me will be even harder next time! Get ready for 90 tracks next time…..maybe 91! ;-) Cheers! -John (Nerd Noise Radio) Track Number – Track Name – Game – System – Composer – Episode Originally Appearing on – Time Stamp (unless obviously otherwise) :-) 01: Intro – 00:00:00 02: Title Theme – Solstice – NES – Tim Follin – Ep 16: 00:00:15 03: Lovely City - Lovely Planet - Multiplatform - Calum Bowen - Ep 4 – 00:03:09 04: Nice Day - Spindizzy II - X68k - Toshiya Yamanaka - Ep 2 – 00:05:44 05: Chilled Reflection (Feat Rudy Escobar) - DYA – Neon Dreams (Album) - Ep 14 – 00:09:15 06: July 2014 - eShop Music - WiiU/3DS - Kazumi Totaka - Ep 6 – 00:11:35 07: Stage 1 - ChipChan-Kick - PCFX - Yoshio Furakawa, Masahara Iwata, and Hitoshi Sakamoto - Ep 4 – 00:14:28 08: Fun with Laser Guns - FearOfDark - FDS – BotB Winter Chip 8 – Ep 8 – 00:17:40 09: Metro City Subway - Final Fight CD – Sega CD - c: Harumi Fujita, Hiromitsu Takaoka, Junko Tamiya, Manami Matsumae, Yasuaki Fujita, Yoko Shimomura and/or Yoshihiro Sakaguchi / a: T's Music - Ep 15 – 00:21:11 10: High Sky - El Viento – Genesis - Motoi Sakuraba - Ep 16 – 00:23:15 11: Snow Land - Wiz 'n' Liz - Genesis – Matt Furniss – Ep 12 – 00:25:37 12: Tachy Touch - Knuckles Chaotix - 32X - Junko Shiratsu, Mariko Nanba - Ep 2 – 00:27:53 13: Ethnic Cave and Flame - X-Men - Arcade - The Konami Kukeiha Club – Ep 10 – 00:28:54 14: The Vile Peaks - Final Fantasy XIII - PS3 - Masashi Hamauzu – Ep 10 – 00:31:24 15: Twilight Palace (Outside) - LoZ: Twilight Princess - GC/Wii - Toru Minegishi, Asuka Ota - Ep 4 – 00:34:10 16: Options - Bram Stoker’s Dracula - Genesis - Matt Furniss - Ep 2 & 17 – 00:37:18 17: Intro - Sabre Team - Amiga - Matt Furniss - Ep 12 – 00:38:46 18: Cycle 1 - Streets of Rage 3 - Genesis - Motohiro Kawashima w Yuzo Koshiro) - Ep 2 – 00:41:38 19: Bonus 1 - Second Samurai - Mega Drive – Matt Furniss - Ep 12 – 00:44:51 20: Mission One - T2: The Arcade Game - Genesis – Matt Furniss – Ep 12 – 00:46:19 21: Traveller's Tales - Knight Arms - X68k - Toshiya Yamanaka - Ep 2 – 00:48:30 22: Yug's Stage - Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Ep 13 – 00:51:05 23: Stage 5-2 – Bram Stoker's Dracula – Genesis – Matt Furniss – Ep 17 – 00:53:01 24: Stage 4-3 - Bram Stoker's Dracula - Genesis – Matt Furniss – Eps 12 & 17 – 00:55:30 25: 4th Cause - Psychosis - TG16 - Atsuhiro Motoyama – Ep 4 – 00:58:17 26: Naja's Stage - Cosmic Carnage – 32X – Hikoshi Hashimoto – Ep 13 – 01:02:47 27: Gong Shun Sheng - Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty (Dark Legend) - Multi - Seiichi Hamada – Ep 4 – 01:04:56 28: Dungeon 2 – Sword of Vermilion – Genesis - Hiroshi Kawaguchi and Yasuhiro Takagi - Ep 7 – 01:07:34 29: Swamp - Samurai Ghost - TG16 - Gappy, Miyoshi Okuyama, and/or Hiroyon – Ep 20 – 01:09:47 30: Passage - Destiny - PS4/XB1 - C. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 episodes, and not in any of the other channels, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days.
