What if the biggest impact of AI isn't replacing jobs, but quickly raising the bar for everyone? In this episode of Leader Generation, host Tessa Burg talks with serial entrepreneur and Corpora.ai CEO Mel Morris about AI in business and marketing. Mel brings decades of experience building and scaling tech companies—from his humble beginnings in data collection to leading King Digital, the force behind Candy Crush. He's now pioneering a new kind of AI-powered research engine—and he's got a lot to say about where we're heading next. Mel gets into the practical realities of AI: how it's shifting the competitive landscape, how it can (and should) be used to save time, and why understanding your unique value is more important than ever. He offers a refreshing perspective on how AI is helping lower-skilled individuals rise up and what that means for marketing teams trying to stand out in a sea of sameness. Whether you're just starting to explore AI or already knee-deep, this episode will challenge your assumptions and help you think more strategically about your tech stack and your value. Leader Generation is hosted by Tessa Burg and brought to you by Mod Op. About Mel Morris: Mel Morris is a visionary entrepreneur and the CEO and co-founder of Corpora.ai, a groundbreaking AI-driven research platform transforming how we harness research. Known as the former chairman of King Digital Entertainment, creators of the global hit Candy Crush Saga, Mel has a proven track record of driving innovation and building market-leading companies. With a deep passion for technology and its potential to transform industries, Mel now focuses on advancing AI to optimize research and decision-making. His leadership and forward-thinking approach continue to shape the future of technology and business. Guest: Bobby Kotick, former CEO of Activision Blizzard; and Bing Gordon, general partner at Kleiner PerkinsIn 2020, when President Trump signed the executive order that would ban TikTok in the U.S., Bobby Kotick called his old friend Steven Mnuchin. The former Secretary of the Treasury told him that, if TikTok's U.S. operations were to be sold to an American company, Microsoft would be the only bidder.A couple calls later, he reached ByteDance founder and CEO Zhang Yiming, who said he'd rather sell to Bobby than Microsoft. Concerned about his ability to get the deal done solo, Bobby called Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and offered to make a joint bid. Nadella declined, but added, “ if the deal doesn't get done, we should sit down and talk about us buying Activision.” TikTok currently remains Chinese-owned, but three years later, Microsoft paid $75 billion for Activision Blizzard.Chapters:Mentioned in this episode: Harvard-Westlake School, Alison Ressler, Vivendi, Berkshire Hathaway, Bruce Hack and Arnaud de Puyfontaine, John Riccitiello and EA, Call of Duty, Bizarre Creations, Atari, Apple II, Commodore 64, Jean-Louis Gassée, Apple Lisa, Howard Lincoln, Philips, Magnavox Odyssey, Sutter Hill Ventures, Infocom and Zork, Toys-R-Us, Howard Hughes, E. People have played games forever, but it's only in the past few decades that people really started thinking about what games are, how they work, and how to make them better. Anatomy of Game Design (CRC Press, 2024) takes some of the most popular and beloved games of all time and dissects them to see what makes them tick. By breaking down the systems and content of each game, the underlying systems of game design are laid bare. Eight games are analyzed – including Settlers of Catan; Centipede; Candy Crush Saga; Papers, Please; Magic: The Gathering; and more – each representing a different genre or era of game design. Each game is discussed in detail, using the same methods for each game. What are the verbs of the game that give the player agency? How do those verbs fit together to form a core loop that makes the game engaging? What are the systems that power the gameplay? What is the larger flow that makes the game interesting over and over again? Each game is then used as an example to tie back to one or more larger topics in game design, such as systems design, randomness, monetization, game theory, and iterative approaches to game development. Key Features: Uses well-known games to provide specific, discrete examples of broader game design theory Discusses eight popular games using the same methodology to allow comparison of different types of games Includes both high-level theory and academic perspective and practical, real-world guidance from a working game designer who has created these games for commercial release Provides clear direction for deeper inquiry into game design or related fields such as psychology, anthropology, game development, or systems thinking Rudolf Thomas Inderst is a professor of Game Design with a focus on Digital Game Studies at the IU International University of Applied Science, department lead for Games at culture magazine Titel kulturmagazin, editor of “DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist”, a weekly messenger newsletter about Game Culture and curator of @gamestudies at tiktok. We're back once again to talk all things video games and probably Taylor Swift in episode 252 of The Finger Guns Podcast. Join Rossko, Miles and Kat as they dredge through the weeks news which is primarily focused on the fallout of Microsoft huge studio closures from last week and what the hell came next.First up, Xbox president Sarah Bond came out to try to defend the companies decision to sack hundreds of employees through closing award winning studios and breaking down award winning companies so yeah, there's that. Oh and Xbox announced, the day after closing Tango Gameworks (the one who made BAFTA-winning small game Hi-Fi Rush) that they want to focus on games which are small and award winning. You couldn't make this up, we are truly bereft with Xbox right now. They've certainly fudged around and found out, indeed. Oh, and there's a third Jurassic Park Evolution on the way and Miles is, weirdly hyped? We find out more. A FLYING T-REX. In Game of the Week Miles has been playing Dredge and the latest rhythm shooter that we call Robobeat while Kat has stuck out Fallout Shelter for a second week running whilst Rossko has been checking out Crow Country and the wonderful Animal Well.In recommendations Miles talks up the latest Saw movie, Kat recommends the Natural History Museum (don't get married there though, tis pricey) and Rossko wants everyone check out the demo for the lovely little indie Fishbowl.Oh, and don't miss Kat's Candy Crush Saga story. It's one for the ages.Hey if you like our podcast why not leave us a review?! You can do it on Apple where you can also spread the love and on Spotify with their star ratings. Speljuntans spaningsgrupp sammanträder i största hemlighet. A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
In 2013-2014, the gaming industry experienced seismic shifts, both in terms of market dynamics and cultural significance. Mobile gaming exploded, with titles like Candy Crush Saga raking in astounding revenue, forcing the industry to reimagine game design and monetization. The Chinese gaming market, led by giants like Tencent, surged, challenging established Western and Japanese powerhouses. Esports events, like The International 2013, elevated competitive gaming to unprecedented heights. Meanwhile, the unveiling of the 8th console generation spurred excitement and innovation. By 2014, the industry's valuation highlighted its massive global influence. Nintendo introduced the New 3DS and Amiibo, emphasizing their dedication to innovative experiences. Indie titles like Octodad and Jackbox Games' party packs introduced fresh gaming experiences. Tech behemoths Amazon and Facebook entered the fray, acquiring Twitch and Oculus respectively, signaling their commitment to gaming's future. Reflecting on these transformative years, key questions arise about the impact of emerging markets, tech giants' influence, and the evolving cultural conversations surrounding gaming.Featured Games:The Last Of Us, Grand Theft Auto V, Counter-Strike, Minecraft, Tomb Raider, Earthbound, Hearthstone, Dark Souls 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Xenoblade Chronicles, Alien: Isolation, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Shovel Knight, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Destiny ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 10 (00:06) - 2013 (24:13) - 2014 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Life is a game. Some would disagree, but if you look closely at the human condition, there are things you will find in games. One of my favorite games is Candy Crush Saga. It's not just a game to me, it's an obsession. There are twists turns and everything that comes with critical thinking, timed skill, and ultimately, choices. Some require the sacrifice of time, money, or both. Candy Crush Saga has so many lessons and tests within the game. It's not simply about winning. It's about self-control and your ability to stave off the dopamine hit we're conditioned to acquire or make choices that strengthen our resolve by abstaining from certain actions. Here are the lessons I learned while playing Candy Crush Saga: Lesson 1: Define objectives before taking action. Taking a moment to understand the goal before making moves is essential in the game and in life. Lesson 2: Avoid rushing and make deliberate decisions. Despite no time limit, hurrying often leads to mistakes. Slowing down, being intentional, and making educated choices yield better outcomes. Lesson 3: Utilize earned resources and favors. In the game, players earn power-ups and currency through gameplay, but they hesitate to use them. Similarly, in life, utilizing the resources, relationships, and opportunities earned or given can lead to success. Applying these lessons can bring clarity, purpose, and better decision-making in various aspects of life. Remember to have fun and look for the lessons and experience in everything you do. Obsessions always bring lessons. How to Get Involved: Listen in as She RULES movement leader Jessica Stroud interviews incredible Entrepreneurs. For the second outing of the Playable Futures Podcast, games journalist Will Freeman chats with Tommy Palm, founder and CEO of Resolution Games to reflect on the future of virtual reality. An industry veteran responsible for the enormous success of Candy Crush Saga, Palm has since shifted his focus to the world of virtual reality, courtesy of Ultimechs, Resolution's new multiplayer VR gaming experience. There are now more than ten million headsets in the market, so with VR well established as an accessible gaming platform, the barriers to entry are now significantly reduced. With the initial years of hype behind us, the format has begun to flourish on its own terms, becoming a fertile creative space for experimental games and ideas that were previously impossible to achieve. Palm reflects on VR's complete reinvention of the traditional gaming experience, which in many ways parallels the evolution he witnessed in the mobile gaming space. “One of the most exciting things about mobile games in the beginning was the touchscreen. It enabled direct control. You could see it so clearly with small children. They would touch the object they wanted to move. It was so incredibly intuitive and we have a little bit of that going on with VR.” Palm also discusses a world of creative possibilities that are only possible in VR. However wonderful and engaging the best games are, they still exist within the standard confines of gaming. VR continues to pioneer away from this, removing the need for a conventional controller-based experience in place of intuitive, responsive play that has continued to change the game. “You want more intricate interaction with games. Visually, they are stunning, but you want more interaction with your games. In VR you have hands, eye-tracking, and voice.” The Playable Futures Podcast accompanies Playable Futures, a collection of insights, interviews, and articles from global games leaders sharing their visions of where the industry and medium will go next. A series of ten articles so far have been published on GamesIndustry.biz, with more planned. Playable Futures is a collaborative project brought to you in partnership with GI.biz, UKIE, and Diva.

The bros finish 2012 with a visit to the poorly named New Raccoon City, a deadly island, and a soul crushing stop in Candy Crush Saga. We take a stroll down memory lane with the Spike Game Awards. Finally, Nick and Jake go head-to-head in a Speedcap that determines the topic of next week's episode.Basic Speedcap RulesWith 5 minutes on the clock, the speedcapper will have to run through the synopsis of a game as fast as they can. The Quiz Master has a checklist of 10 items the speedcapper must cover in that time. In the end, we'll tally the score and see where the speedcapper finished. If the speedcapper scores over 30 points, the Quiz Master will have to complete a dare on the next show. When Alex Norstrom started working at Spotify in 2011, CEO Daniel Ek told him there were three goals: Growth, growth, and growth. But Alex — now the Chief Freemium Business Officer — argued that his team would be better motivated by an “impossible goal,” something like reaching 100 million users. To which Daniel replied: “Let's do it. Your goal is to get us to 100 million users. Please begin.”In this episode, Alex and Joubin convene at Spotify's brand-new Stockholm studio to discuss his first job, the “shadow” mentorship program Alex runs, how Facebook changed everything for the gaming company King, thinking about the “bigger picture,” the tremendous effort happening behind the scenes before Spotify launched in each new country, “optimizing for surprises,” Joubin's embarrassing Spotify playlists, why we're still in the early innings of podcasting, Alex's lowest point at Spotify, partnering with FC Barcelona, and culture as currency. In this episode, we cover: The surprising lack of media coverage of Alex despite his prominence at Spotify (05:56) Working at his mother's Chinese restaurant and his relationship with food (12:21) The early “fiascos” in Alex's career, and how he came to work at Candy Crush Saga creator King (18:01) How Spotify CEO Daniel Ek convinced Alex to work for him (25:38) Why Alex has tried to set “impossible goals” since his first day at Spotify (28:40) Why the freemium business model works (34:21) Spotify's hardest and biggest market: The USA (38:39) Pivoting to a mobile-first strategy and the pricing trick that turned conversion numbers around (42:59) The invention of Discover Weekly, and Spotify's deep bench of other features (51:21) How Spotify got interested in podcasts, and the decision to put them in the same app with music (57:50) The odd but crucial lesson Alex learned early in his career: Stay near the laughter (01:06:46) Being ubiquitous on many platforms, and the art of pitching big & partnering smart (01:09:05) The end of free growth on the internet, and the power of Spotify Wrapped (01:15:07) Links: Connect with Alex Twitter LinkedIn Connect with Joubin Twitter LinkedIn Email: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner Perkins

On #TheUpdate this Friday, Russian forces have struck Ukrainian cities from a distance once again, hitting sites in Kyiv and the west as their ground offensive continues to inch forward under fierce Ukrainian resistance. The war launched by Russian President Putin is grinding into its fourth week as his troops have failed to take Kyiv- a major objective in their hopes of forcing a settlement or dictating the country's future political alignments. Meanwhile, Britain's communications regulator has revoked the license of the state-funded Russian broadcaster RT amid concern that its coverage if the war in Ukraine was biased.
Last Tuesday, Microsoft announced the takeover of US gaming giant Activision Blizzard -- the makers of the famous Call of Duty series and Candy Crush Saga. The deal was struck at a massive $69 billion. Microsoft claimed that the pact has made it the third-largest gaming company by revenue, following Tencent and Sony. In its official statement, the company also said that the move will provide “building blocks for the metaverse”. But with metaverse still a distant dream, what is behind Microsoft's ambitious plunge into the world of gaming? Not just online gaming, India is one of the fastest growing markets for booze too. Several international brands are testing the waters here. One of them, French distiller Pernod Ricard, also has big expansion plans for the country. In an interaction with Business Standard's Surajeet Das Gupta, Pernod Ricard's South Asia chief Thibault Cuny talks about his India-strategy after Covid-restrictions and how he aims to drive in the consumption experience of ‘quality over quantity'. After Pernod Ricard, let us see what is brewing on Dalal Street. Following a sprint above 18,300, Indian bourses caught their breath last week, rattled by rising bond yields and oil prices. This week, market moves will be guided by Q3 results, F&O expiry, global cues, and budget expectations. Market participants expect the government to retain its emphasis on capex investment, with a major focus on growth-supportive expenditures in both the public and private sectors. What else do markets expect from the Union Budget of 2022, and what are the demands of investors? Markets may well begin the upward movement soon. Let us move on to one of the most debated topics of our times. Subsidies. Some loath it while others love it. Last week, several top US Lawmakers urged their government to approach WTO against India which they said was subsidizing over half of the value of production for rice and wheat, against the WTO limit of 10%. Find out about subsidies, why countries need it and more in this episode of the podcast. Watch video
It is not just the players, but gaming companies too are making and breaking records. “Grand Theft Auto” video game maker Take-Two Interactive (TTWO.O) announced on January 10 that it was buying Zynga for $11.04 billion in a cash-and-stock deal. The milestone did not last long. Just a week later, Microsoft announced that it was acquiring video game company Activision Blizzard for a whopping $69 billion, shattering all the previous records. It is the company's biggest ever buyout and the largest deal ever not just in the gaming industry but also in tech. Microsoft will now become the world's third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind China's Tencent and Japan's Sony. It is spending an amount that is equal to what it had shelled out on five of its largest previous acquisitions combined. Despite the difference in deal sizes, some parallels can be drawn between the back-to-back Microsoft and Take-Two acquisitions. Microsoft will instantly gain a large audience in mobile gaming, where it currently has a negligible presence. Mobile is the largest as well as the fastest-growing segment in gaming and Activision owns mobile-gaming studio King, the maker of Candy Crush. Activision's Candy Crush Saga and Call of Duty: Season 1 are among India's top 10 highest grossing Android games. This will also give Microsoft a major foothold in Indian gaming. Home to more than 430 million mobile gamers, India's gaming market is currently worth $1.6 billion and growing at 35-40% annually, with mobile gaming contributing more than 90% to this value. And it will go to the next level after the roll out of 5G services. Most importantly, the acquisition bolsters Microsoft's cloud gaming service, the Xbox Game Pass, which already has 25 million users. The company will gain access to Activision's 400 million monthly active players from 190 countries as it plans to launch Activison games into Game Pass. The Netflix-style subscription service gives its members access to a rotating catalogue of games from a range of developers including EA. The games can be played on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs or Android smartphones. Streamed via the cloud on those devices. Game Pass also supports Android smartphones and tablets. Microsoft has been pushing cloud gaming where games are streamed onto devices from company data centres but requires a fast internet connection. The acquisition helps Microsoft establish a cross platform gaming ecosystem. After enterprise software and cloud, Microsoft will also become a formidable player in gaming, regardless of its long term metaverse plans. Data analytics firm Newzoo estimates that the global gaming market generated $180.3 billion of revenues in 2021. Microsoft's gaming market share is set to go from 6.5% in 2020 to 10.7% when the Activision deal closes. Microsoft said the Activison purchase will provide building blocks for the metaverse or virtual online worlds where people can work, play and socialise. Its other metaverse projects are taking shape. It has launched its mixed reality headset HoloLens 2, which is now available in India too. This year, it is launching Microsoft Mesh, which lets customers create immersive digital copies of their offices. Some say the world-building game Minecraft, which Microsoft bought in 2015, gives a peek into the metaverse. Microsoft hopes that valuable communities of gamers will help in creating the worlds inside the metaverse when it becomes a reality from just a theoretical concept now. Watch video

We'll make a wager that no matter where you're reading this from in the world, you know Candy Crush. Whether it's familiar because you're a subway over-the-shoulder snooper or because you're a fan yourself, the colorful and hypnotizing layout stands out from many games. King has, in part, made Candy Crush such a success because they're committed to localizing and globalizing content for their players. In this episode of The Loc Show, we go in depth about video game localization and why Miguel's work with King as the Global Localization Manager stands out: How he actively works against the prevalent thought within the industry that localization is an entity in and of itself. Why the localization team at King does serious research into how gamers from different cultural backgrounds perceive everything from font type to beauty. How Miguel and his carefully selected team members folds in many considerations to maximize localization efforts, resulting in a seamless gaming experience for players by asking important questions: What is the message and who is it going to? What are the preferred game modes? What cultural nuances should be considered? How can we help the marketing team find customers by localizing keywords? Is there different terminology used in games for different markets? Join us for this conversation as Miguel takes us through his 20+ years of experience in the industry, gives us the rundown on how he has bolstered his team to be the glue at King, and shares snippets of his successful blog Yolocalizo. On this episode you will learn: How Miguel has built his crew to become the glue for the company and how he encourages team members to ensure they're silo breakers. How Miguel embraces the RACI framework to enable his team and colleagues to understand localization is a shared responsibility and the most effective way to keep projects on track. Questions to ask yourself, your PM and your team to keep your projects moving seamlessly. Miguel's thoughts on the ROI of localization and globalization and what other insightful questions should be discussed with your C-Suite to evaluate success. What to listen for:[01:20] Miguel's perspective on the localization industry and its many facets.[04:05] How Miguel came to work in the industry and about his current position at King.[08:55] The localization process at King and the importance of building a strong and balanced team.[15:55] Understanding that localization is a continuous process.[17:39] The RACI framework: What it is and how it helps to keep teams on task.[21:23] The results Miguel has seen from the implementation of the RACI Framework at King.[23:15] Why the player experience is a more valuable metric than ROI.[28:34] Measuring customer satisfaction: The single unifying metric.[31:42] Addressing internal feedback regarding localization processes.[33:12] Why Miguel is proud of shifting the localization process to an internal model at King.[35:46] Taking on talent: The importance of creating a balanced team and investing in people.[40:50] Is ROI important to localization and, more importantly, can you survive the market without it?[46:30] Understanding the added value localization brings.Keep learning with Miguel, King & Smartling Yolocalizo, Miguel's website King's site @King_Games on Twitter @lifeatking on Instagram Smartling's site

This week the guys talk about the possible Days Gone/Last of Us 2 connection, Fortnight on crossplay, Jurassic World Evolution, and the return of Candy Crush Saga.
Video games are the new self-help, and Jane McGonigal is here to tell us why. She's an all around gaming boss (see here and here) and she's the director of game research and development at the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto, California where she's spent years researching our brains during what she calls, "the state of play." After wading through tons of research, she found that gaming is a wonderland of possibilities to make us smarter, happier, and more creative people. So game play isn't just an escape? Nope, it doesn't have to be. Jane says that the key to finding positive emotions and empowerment is to ground your gaming in real life. So when you're trapped in Minecraft, don't give up and walk away, trudge on. Fight. Or use creative problem-solving to get to to the next level. Those skills or resources will spill out from the virtual world and into the real one. In fact, gaming can help cope with depression and combat anxiety, but it's all about the dosage (i.e. how much gaming you're doing). And we didn't want to leave you hanging when it comes to figuring out which games are best for what. Here are Jane's prescriptions: If you're trying to lose weight: "When you feel a craving coming on, play a visual pattern-matching game on your phone -- like Tetris or Candy Crush Saga – for ten minutes. These games have been shown in scientific studies to reduce cravings, by monopolizing your visual imagination and blocking your brain's ability to picture the thing you crave. Research shows that players make healthier eating choices in the hour after they've played!" If you need to reduce stress or combat anxiety: "Try the new game Reigns. It's a simple and easy-to-learn game in the style of games known to activate the same blood flow patterns in the brain as meditation, creating a blissful state of mind known as "flow." Research shows that twenty minutes of these flow-inducing games, three times a week, will help you focus your mind and calm yourself, and improve your mood for hours afterward. (Believe it or not, I've met many Buddhist monks who play Angry Birds!)" If you could use a boost of extra energy and motivation: "Play a really tricky puzzle game, like Sudoku, Cut the Rope, or The Room. Research shows that trying to solve a difficult puzzle increases dopamine levels in your brain, which is the neurotransmitter that increases your work ethic and will power. It doesn't matter if you successfully complete the game or not – just trying will do the trick, and the harder the better. So if you have a difficult project to tackle, or a complex problem to solve, prime your brain for success with fifteen minutes of puzzling first." Manoush is an old-school Tetris addict and she just downloaded it on her phone to play guilt-free. But what's your jam? Tell us what you like playing and why. As per the usual, get in touch at notetoself@wnyc.org, or the comments section below, or on Twitter or Facebook. UPDATE: You've been writing in to tell us about the games you use to de-stress or stretch your brain, and they sound so good we had to share. Below, suggestions from Note to Self listeners: "If you're looking for a game to play before bed, Harvest Moon is my all time favorite. Nothing is as relaxing as simulated farming." - Maggie "I like playing a game called Wordament to help deal with stress or to calm my brain down at the end of the day. It forces my brain to focus on just one thing rather than having scattershot thoughts." - Chris "The Witness is the epitome of puzzle games. If you want a mind-tearing, beautiful, and unbelievably involved puzzle game, that is the game for you." - Justin "Words With Friends keeps me connected. Monument Valley just tickled me. Klondike Solitaire to empty my head." - Peg "Since I was 11 years old, The Sims has been one of the most effective stress-relieving aspects of my life. There's something about the steady, creative process of building a house, achieving perceived long-term goals (Barista -> Manager in 1 hour, what?!) and social experimentation that completely relaxes me. Crazy to think after 15 years of turbulent high school emotions, unrewarding internships, stressful career deadlines, that this one game has evolved with me and, in my opinion, heightened by durability to the pressures of everyday life." - Angelique "I remembered while looking into Monument Valley in particular that the soundtracks are so also so helpful for studying. My favorites right now are MV's, Journey, and Firewatch!!" - Tracey "I play ancestry.com. It's the only technology driven game I've ever played. I find it fun, interesting, challenging and then I have a kinship chart for my children when I'm finished." - Leslie "My game is Spelltower. My daughter enjoys playing many games- Satellina, Monument Valley, Pictoword, Twist -- and I think most are useful in teaching problem-solving." - Leanna For more Note to Self, subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn, I Heart Radio, Overcast, Pocket Casts, or anywhere else using our RSS feed.
