In this edition of The Way Out I'm pleased to bring you my interview with husband, father, person in long term recovery and Author of the book Finding Myself Sober, Dean Anderson. Dean shares his journey to and through Recovery to this point with us with genuine humor, humility and an unmistakable wisdom that can only come from doing the work and practicing certain recovery principles on a daily basis. Dean's story is proof positive alcoholism and addiction doesn't discriminate. As we demonstrate often on this podcast, having an idyllic childhood is no guarantee against developing alcohol or substance use disorder despite the high prevalence of trauma and mental health disorders among those of us who identify as persons in Recovery. Dean's story and his book bring to light key Recovery principles that underlay the 12-Step program of Recovery that are in fact universally applicable to all of us whom are looking for a practical way to implement positive change in our lives as we progress in our individual recovery so listen up.   Learn more about Finding Myself Sober by Dean S Anderson: https://a.co/d/4AZB7xz Recovery literature (quit-lit) recommendation: The Shack by William P. On this new episode of Got Your 6, Tony Nash talks to Sebastian Paz, a US Air Force combat veteran, emergency department nurse, and co-founder of the non-profit https://www.vetwod.org/ (VETWOD). One mindset that he continues to practice even after leaving the military is being goal- or mission-oriented. Every day, he tries to maximize time and opportunity. “I'm all about maximizing every single day, getting the most out of myself, out of people, out of situations. The military has shaped me in that facet where I have 24 hours a day, let's put it to good use.” ----- Three books that have made an impact on his life are the Holy Bible, especially the parables as he says they are useful in everyday life, https://davidgoggins.com/book/ (David Goggins' Can't Hurt Me), which reveals that most people only tap into 40% of their capabilities, and William P. Young's https://wmpaulyoung.com/the-shack/ (The Shack), which Seb says spoke to him about forgiveness, unconditional love, and self-development.  Putting ‘fear of failure' to good use Seb talks about growing up without a father and how this drove him to become a better person and a present father to his two children. He also shares why he has a “respectful fear of failure,” in that he is scared not of failing but of making the same mistakes again. He talks about one of his passions – parenting – and how his fear of failure drives him to be a better parent. He knows there are two lives in his hands and he wants his children to grow up to be good and respectful people. “The biggest failure that has really made me who I am today is the failure of my father not being who he should've been and that is what drives me to be the father I wish I had – and not in a hateful or resentful way because we made amends. That part of my life is healed, there's closure but that still drives me.” While it's healthy to fear failure, Seb says people should not be paralyzed by it. “As long as I tried and learn from those failures, we turn them into success.” Why he doesn't consider himself a success Seb shares actionable advice on fighting societal pressures to succeed. He believes that people should not put themselves in boxes. Contrary to society's need for speed, he believes working towards a goal, even just a little bit every day, is more than not doing anything at all. It is all about maximizing your time. He talks about the systemic pressure to go all out all the time – all or nothing. This isn't right, as he says the trajectory isn't always straight and it is ok for people to slow down, shift gears, focus on the little things, and change their mindsets. “It's almost like everything has to be overnight success.” “Doing something, even if it's a little bit, it's more than doing nothing at all.” Seb, a constant learner, says he does not – and will never – consider himself successful, as he believes there are always challenges to conquer and problems to solve. On resilience and adaptability Born and raised in Colombia by a single mother, Seb moved to the US a few months before 9/11, becoming a naturalized citizen in 2009. Seb believes in the power of hard work in changing your life for the better, saying “the journey won't unfold by luck.” He also believes in the power of resilience in order to continuously grow in life – no matter the situation. “You won't get to where you want to go or where you're supposed to go by sitting on a couch.” A self-made man, Seb shares his “big dislike” for people attributing success to luck. “I have a big dislike for people saying in various forms, something like ‘Oh, you're so lucky,' or ‘Oh, you're living the life. Because I feel like disrespect not only to me, to everyone that works really hard and that maximizes their opportunities and knocks a thousand doors just so one door could be opened or get kicked out, slip and fail.” Ultimately, Seb says that if he, who has no special opportunities or elite background, was able to make

Meet today's Beacon, Tara Roberts.  She is an extraordinary human who has achieved very high levels and she has faced her share of personal and family struggles.  Many of you will relate-- what someone's life looks like from the outside isn't usually what it looks like from the inside.  Tara has been a mentor, motivator and cheerleader to me and I know she'll inspire you as well. Some of the topics we cover in this episode are: -how a person (and especially a woman) can be confident and not have to apologize for it -how its your reaction to your circumstances, not the circumstances themselves, that can change your perspective on life--even in the midst of family addiction, miscarriage, bankruptcy and illness. -how God is always pursuing you, even when you're not pursuing Him -how we are all perfectly imperfect -how to keep what is good in your life, honor what was hard and commit to changing what you can -how being passionate about what you do can give you confidence -how we can't do it alone.  Let your friends help you. She drops a golden social media nugget:  before you post, pause, because the moment is fleeting but what you put out there is forever. Her book recommendations include:  "The Shack" by William P. Young.  "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" by John Mark Comer and "Greenlights" by Matthew McConaughey Some of her favorite quotes are:  "Smile where you are...God is."  and "Don't let your blessings become your burdens." If you're someone who listens to podcasts on 1.5x speed, this is definitely an episode you want to slow down and really listen to.  On today's episode, Alan sits down with William Paul Young for a very deep and rich conversation about hurt, healing, and restoration. You may not know Williams's name, but many of you have heard of, read or seen the movie adaptation of his book, The Shack. Alan and William have a very rich discussion about his real-life struggles, being found out, and his journey to redemption and restoration, which is the story behind The Shack.  About William William P. Young (Paul) was born a Canadian and along with three younger siblings was raised among a stone-age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of what was New Guinea (West Papua). The family returned to Canada where his father pastored a number of churches for various denominations. By the time he entered Canadian Bible College, Paul had attended a dozen schools. He completed his undergraduate degree in religion at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon.  Connect with William Facebook Instagram Books Partner with us Storehouse

In this episode Raya, Treava Champagne and Lynn will discuss the book/movie The Shack.  (Please keep in mind that many details are discussed and therefore spoilers are inevitable) Publishers Summary: The novel is set in the American Northwest. The main character is Mackenzie Allen Phillips, a father of five called "Mack" by his family and friends. Four years prior to the main events of the story, Mack takes three of his children on a camping trip to Wallowa Lake near Joseph, Oregon, stopping at Multnomah Falls on the way. Two of his children are playing in a canoe when it flips and almost drowns Mack's son. Mack is able to save his son by rushing to the water and freeing him from the canoe's webbing but unintentionally leaves his youngest daughter Missy alone at their campsite. After Mack returns, he sees that Missy is missing. The police are called, and the family discovers that Missy has been abducted and murdered by a serial killer known as the "Little Ladykiller". The police find an abandoned shack in the woods where Missy was taken. Her bloodied clothing is found, but her body is not located. Mack's life sinks into what he calls "The Great Sadness". As the novel begins, Mack receives a note in his mailbox from "Papa", saying that he would like to meet with Mack that coming weekend at the shack. Mack is puzzled by the note—he has had no relationship with his abusive father since he left home at age 13. He suspects that the note may be from God whom his wife Nan refers to as "Papa". Mack's family leaves to visit relatives and he goes alone to the shack, unsure of what he will see there. He arrives and initially finds nothing, but as he is leaving, the shack and its surroundings are supernaturally transformed into a lush and inviting scene. He enters the shack and encounters manifestations of the three persons of the Trinity. God the Father takes the form of an African American woman who calls herself Elousia and Papa; Jesus is a Middle Eastern carpenter; and the Holy Spirit physically manifests as an Asian woman named Sarayu. The bulk of the book narrates Mack's conversations with Papa, Jesus, and Sarayu as he comes to terms with Missy's death and his relationship with the three of them. Mack also has various experiences with each of them. Mack walks across a lake with Jesus, sees an image of his (Earthly) father in Heaven with Sarayu, and has a conversation with Sophia, the personification of God's wisdom. At the end of his visit, Mack goes on a hike with Papa, now appearing as an older Native American male, who shows him where Missy's body was left in a cave. After spending the weekend at the shack, Mack leaves and is so preoccupied with his thoughts that he is nearly killed in an automobile accident. After his recovery, he realizes that he did not in fact spend the weekend at the shack, but that his accident occurred on the same day that he arrived at the shack. He also leads the police to the cave that Papa revealed, and they find Missy's body still lying there.

Divine Cinema - Progressive Christian Movie Reviews & Analysis

The Shack is a cinematic attempt at answering the age old question of, “Where is God when bad things happen to good people?”.  Jeff, Dylan and Adam discuss how this film does in approaching such a complex issue.  Does The Shack sell out the gospel with over simplified answers to complex questions or does it provide a solid foundation of theological discovery?   Initial Thoughts (00:39) Review of The Shack (05:44) Ratings and Redeemed Perspectives (54:31) PLOT SUMMARY Based on the novel of the same name, The Shack follows Mack Phillips in the aftermath of his daughter's kidnapping.  His worst fears are confirmed when the police discover his daughter’s blood and discarded clothes in a shack in the middle of the woods.  Later, he receives a mysterious letter in his mailbox asking him to come to the shack once again.  The letter is signed by ‘Papa’, the name his daughter used for God.  Thinking is being lured there by his daughter’s killer he decides to go and soon realizes that it was not his daughter’s killer that brought him there, but God.  And through a few days in the Shack, talking with various forms of the Trinity, Mack finally begins to deal with his grief. Tim McGraw, 'The Shack' Interview The Not Old Better Show, Movies for Adults Over the course of the last week, we've really had some great interviews, of course we've talked to star Octavia Spencer,…author, William Paul Young, who wrote the best selling novel, The Shack, that the movie is based on, actor Sam Worthington, and of course star Tim McGraw. Please check out the full complement of shows on the new movie, The Shack, at The Not Old Better Show, and today, a complete review of the movie. The movie has inspiring messages about everything from seeking help/counsel to processing grief in a healthy way to the power of forgiveness. That said, the ideas related to God's role in people's lives will particularly resonate with Christians/those open to faith-based questions.  I recommend the movie to my audience and specifically to people who are looking for a basic explanation of who the Trinity is; those looking to start a conversation about Christianity with their friends; people who enjoyed the bestselling novel. And, now, After months of both anticipation and controversy, The Shack (based on William P. Young's 2007 bestseller) is a wonderful film.  There are those who'll find fault with it, but again, for those interested in starting a conversation about God, this is a great place to start. Check out our interview, and go see 'The Shack'

Author Jim Henderson has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Fox Television, and This American Life with Ira Glass. He’s a former pastor now spiritual anthropologist. His books include Evangelism Without Additives, The Outsider Interviews, The Resignation of Eve, and his latest, Question Mark about spiritual pride and the downfall of Mark Driscoll.   Jim prescribes what he calls “otherlyness.”  1) be interested in others, 2) stay in the room with difference, and 3) stop comparing your best with the worst of others.  Jim’s mission is, in his own words, to Take Jesus Public, and once again Cass finds himself talking to a Christian with whom he gets along really well.  Unfortunately Bob was out of town and had to miss this taping.
