I consider a flywheel a system. It's an order of doing things that once started, should keep going. One thing leads to the next. You can have a sales flywheel, a marketing flywheel, an operations flywheel, and more.I decided to create a content flywheel on paper. It was always in my head, but making a design in Canva to actually see makes a big difference for me when it comes to execution. Why content? When I look at how I get most of my leads and my clients, it's from my content. Even if it's not directly from my content, people look me up and check me out before deciding to contact me. My content is a big factor in their decision. So, this is a behind-the-scenes look at my content flywheel. Before I tell you how one media placement led to 1,600 customers for a business, I want to remind you that public relations is not sales. It's marketing. The sales come afterward.I don't like it when people rely on media placements to get sales. Can it happen and does it happen often? Yes. But it's not sales. It's marketing… and sales are a side effect of getting attention in the media. In SparkToro, Amanda Natividad told a story about her time at NatureBox, a snack food brand. She broke down her earned media goals into two buckets - long-term and short-term. One focus was on building a reputation and the other was to try to sell the product.I love this story for a few reasons and you can replicate what Amanda did by focusing on what she did that worked well.First, they were ready for conversions. 5 Reasons NOT to Work with a Pay-for-Placement PR Agency

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2023 17:51

This issue has been plaguing the media and public relations industries for years. It's paying for editorial placements, also known as paying for placement PR. Any professional will tell you this is wrong and unethical. But the people who want you to hire them will tell you it's safe and a way to make sure you don't waste your money. When they say that, they're just trying to get your money with little regard for their reputation or theirs.By doing this, a PR agency is guaranteeing results. Right off the bat, that's a red flag. First of all, The Federal Trade Commission requires content sponsors to disclose whether they have paid for a third-party review or endorsement. When so-called public relations firms make these specific promises, they may be violating fair-trade practices.Sometimes, they pitch and only charge you when they land something and call it a day. I'll get into the problems with this today, but sometimes they also pay people they know who contribute to a place they land the coverage and that's a whole different, darker story. I've done many episodes on this before so those out on the podcast. The lines get blurred when you hire a publicist and ONLY pay them if and when they land you coverage. In this podcast episode, I explain why. When you're ready, here are three ways I can help you.1. I love being productive and efficient. Sometimes a NOT to-do list can help you get just as much done if not more. While traditional to-do lists outline tasks and obligations, a "NOT to do" list allows you to identify and eliminate nonessential or unproductive activities. By clearly defining what activities should be avoided or minimized, it helps in setting boundaries and staying focused on the most critical tasks. This approach prevents wasted time and energy on distractions, unimportant commitments, or counterproductive habits. By consciously avoiding these activities, you can allocate more time and energy towards meaningful, high-priority tasks that contribute to your goals and overall success. Ultimately, a "NOT to do" list serves as a powerful tool for enhancing efficiency and maximizing productivity.Listen to what's on mine!Resources mentioned in this episode:Check out my online course at MediaMentoringProgram.comJoin my newsletter at MediaMavenAndMore.com/newsletterSee how we can work together at MediaMavenAndMore.com/work-togetherJoin Christina's newsletter for insider tips on growing your business without ads here.Become a contributor to a top website to build your brand with free resources here.Click here to join Christina's 3-hour bootcamp Pitch Publicity Profit. 2 Ways to Know if You're Ready for PR

I'm shocked at how many people, especially female business owners make excuses for not being ready for PR - to be on a podcast, contribute an article, land a TV interview, etc.People feel like they're not ready because of their perception of what they see on the outside. That perception is exactly why earning media exposure is worth so much - because of the way your audience will perceive you.People don't get there because they have lots of money, run a successful business, have a big team, or anything else you may assume. They got there because they pitched a good idea at the right time. Trust me, that's better than relationships. If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you're ready to earn coverage. Are you an expert in something that can help someone? Do you have a product that solves a problem for someone? (If you don't think you are, go back and listen to or watch the episode from April 4th on 4 Ways to Beat Imposter Syndrome in Just 15 Minutes.) I also go into this topic in hour one of my 3-hour bootcamp, Pitch Publicity Profit.Do you have a place to send leads? This could be a website, phone number, physical address… even a social media handle for you to start a conversation. That's it. That's all you need to earn exposure. That attention turns into leads. Those leads turn into sales (if you nurture them correctly). That's how you grow your business. It's Business 101. Attention > Leads > Sales.Getting attention is step one. You can't have the other two without it.Some resources mentioned in this episode:4 Ways to Beat Imposter Syndrome in Just 15 MinutesPitchPublicityProft.comJoin Christina's newsletter for insider tips on growing your business without ads here.Become a contributor to a top website to build your brand with free resources here.Click here to join Christina's 3-hour bootcamp Pitch Publicity Profit. You will get coverage. But what they won't tell you is that NO ONE WILL SEE IT. This is why.1. The press release is copied and pasted. That's it.2. Imposter syndrome is loosely defined as doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. It disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments. One study found that about 70% of all people have felt like an imposter at some point. Imposter syndrome often affects those who are highly capable perfectionists. What does imposter syndrome look like? You don't give yourself credit. You may think it's only a matter of time until the luck runs out, and you're exposed. You're in the forest, so you can't see the trees. As more wins and accomplishments pile up, you aren't able to clear the cobwebs and look at your achievements for what they really are.Ask yourself this:"If a stranger shared these accomplishments with me, would the logical conclusion be that they are all a stroke of luck and therefore a fraud?” Probably not.1. Maybe you have the curse of knowledge blindness.2. Maybe you don't realize we are all constantly learning and can't possibly know it all all the time.3. Maybe you need to take a beat to ponder your accomplishments.4. Maybe you need to manifest being a big deal in real life… kinda.Get your wants and goals in orderThink about them via a vision board, positive affirmations, etc.Surround yourself with others doing it, listen to podcasts, join masterminds, etc.Execute. Your thoughts will influence your words, which determines your actions.Thoughts > Words > ActionsSome call it manifesting. You still need to be involved to make it successful. I'm going to tell you how people sabotage their own PR, so if you're doing these things, you stop… or you know better when you're ready to implement a PR strategy.1. You don't get back to us when we need you to.The media works on deadlines, so we need to hear from you ASAP. Many times, they take what's first and won't wait for what's best. Also, don't no-show an interview… because you won't have another one.2. You don't keep us in the loop. You know your industry better than we do, so fill us in when big things happen in your niche or at your company so we can spill our news story wheels to see how we can weave you into the narrative and get it some coverage. It could be very helpful to us if you keep an eye out for story ideas!3. You have unrealistic expectations. There needs to be more education in this industry because it's wild how many people think a.) it's easy to get wherever you want when you want, b.) how deserving they are to get wherever they want when they want. 4. You don't speak in soundbites or good quotes.A good soundbite is an animated 15-20 seconds of you saying something of value that adds to whatever is being discussed. Think of it as a passionate conversation, not an infomercial. Just because you're high up on the totem pole at a company, doesn't mean you're good at this. Comfort is key.5. You don't understand the news. It's not the media's job to give you a free commercial or promotion. There is a big difference between what is paid and what is earned. Earned media is always going to answer the questions reporters are asked in their morning meeting about why a story is being covered now infront of their audience.Join Christina's newsletter for insider tips on growing your business without ads here.Become a contributor to a top website to build your brand with free resources here.Click here to join Christina's 3-hour bootcamp Pitch Publicity Profit. At the end of 2022, I asked the wonderful business owners on my email list to ask me anything about their biggest frustration in learning how to get attention without using ads. I saw a recurring theme with three people and answer their questions here about:the amount of time it takes to write and repurpose content consistentlyfinding and following up with opportunities to be on other people's platformsfinding the right people to contact in the mediahow to get messages to stand out so people actually open an email and act upon ithow to translate attention into sales Some resources mentioned in this episode include:16 Places accepting contributors:https://www.mediamavenandmore.com/contributor/Pitch Publicity Profit: https://www.mediamavenandmore.com/publicityMedia Mentoring Program: https://www.mediamavenandmore.com/media-mentoring-program/Podcast Clout: https://podcastclout.com/My Newsletter: https://www.mediamavenandmore.com/newsletterJustin Welsh's LinkedIn Operating System:https://www.justinwelsh.me/a/2147505019/Fb2eagALJustin Welsh's Content Operating System:https://www.justinwelsh.me/a/2147507660/Fb2eagAL  Join Christina's 3-day bootcamp Pitch Publicity Profit: MediaMavenAndMore.com/Publicity If you liked this episode, please subscribe to this podcast to hear more like it. 7 Ways to Make Social Media Support PR

A Media Mentoring Program client of mine reached out on Facebook and suggested an episode idea, so I moved all the other ones down and bumped this one up for her. There is such an overlap between social media and PR. They work together, so make them work for you!Build your brand on social media by sharing your expertise on social media. This way when a journalist does their research on you, they are convinced.Share your wins on social media. This shows your TRUE expertise.Do this regularly. Don't do it once and forget it because then new followers won't see it and current followers won't remember.Connect with the person you're pitching. This is why it's important to select a handful of ones that will move the needle for you instead of 500 who cover your niche.Don't just connect - like, comment, retweet, etc. After you pitch them, send them a tweet or message to give them a heads-up.After you earn coverage, share it on social media REPEATEDLY and tag the journalist who made it happen. I talk about the importance of this in previous episodes with journalists. To do this seamlessly and automatically, I use Agorapulse. Try it free for 30 days here: https://www.agorapulse.com/?via=christina86Join Christina's 3-day bootcamp Pitch Publicity Profit: MediaMavenAndMore.com/Publicity If you liked this episode, please subscribe to this podcast to hear more like it. People Say This Is the Best Business Book. I disagree.

Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike by Phil Knight is said to be the best business book. Ever. The learning lessons are inferred and not spelled out, but the author summarizes everything he learned at the end. While I don't relate to having a product business, I'm struggling to find business and personal development books that aren't too generic or sound the same.My quick takeaways and memorable parts of the book:Phil Knight doesn't seem too likable. The idea behind Nike started with a college paper. Nike grew through influencer marketing before influencer was a word.Nike was more innovative than the other guys… by doing things like using a waffle maker to create the sole of a shoe.Nike means the Winged Goddess of Victory. The Nike swoosh was created by a female college student, Carolyn Davidson, for just $35. Here's more on her and her story: https://creativemarket.com/blog/the-35-nike-logo-and-the-woman-who-designed-itFor some reason, Nike never had money… even the year they had $140 million in sales. That's why they went public. Today, Phil Knight is worth $35.2 billion.Join Christina's 3-day bootcamp Pitch Publicity Profit: MediaMavenAndMore.com/Publicity If you liked this episode, please subscribe to this podcast to hear more like it.
