Stephen Moss, Part Two: Moss explores the Raven, a bird of deep mythology and intelligence, appearing in Norselegends as Odin's messengers and in modern culture like Game of Thrones. Though often seen as harbingers of doom in works by Shakespeare and Poe, Ravens are highly adaptable and have successfully recolonized urban areas. The narrative shifts to the Cormorant, whose guano fueled a 19th-century fertilizer boom that enriched businessmen while exploiting Chinese indentured laborers. This led to synthetic fertilizers, which Moss argues have caused a decline in farmland birds like the Gray Partridge and Skylark. A tragic highlight is Mao Zedong's campaign against the Tree Sparrow, which triggered a massive insect population boom and a famine killing up to 50 million people. Moss also recounts the "Emu War," where the Emu successfully evaded the Australian army's machine guns. The Snowy Egret's near-extinction due to the fashion industry's demand for plumes is credited with sparking the founding of the Audubon Society by women activists. Finally, the Emperor Penguin is presented as a modern "miner's canary," signaling the urgent threat of the climate crisis to global biodiversity. (2)
Guano and the Double-Edged Sword of Industrial Farming Guest: Stephen Moss Book Title: Ten Birds That Changed the World The story of the cormorant centers on guano, a nitrogen-rich fertilizer that once made businessmen like William Gibbs the richest commoners in England. While the Inca had used guano for centuries, the 19th-century trade was built on the tragic exploitation of Chinese indentured laborers on arid Peruvian islands. This "natural" fertilizer era eventually gave way to the Haber-Bosch process, which allowed for the mass production of synthetic nitrates. Mossargues that while this "high farming" prevented starvation, it led to a "drug addict" dependency on chemicals that has devastated wildlife. Farmland birds like the partridge and skylark have declined sharply as intensive practices destroy insects and degrade soil. Citing Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Moss highlights that the same agricultural revolution that boosted yields also created an ecological crisis, leaving many modern fields "hopeless for wildlife." Bryan Boling sits down for a spoiler-free chat with novelist Michael Idov, diving into The Cormorant Hunt, the standalone sequel to his acclaimed spy thriller The Collaborators. Idov discusses the challenge of writing a compelling antagonist in Felix Burnham—a fusion of Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate who pushes protagonist Ari Falk to his limits. They explore how real-world extremism, post-COVID paranoia, and disinformation influence modern spy fiction, and why setting stories in overlooked global locales adds authenticity. From the Reichsbürger to action-packed drone chases in Georgia (the country), Idov breaks down how topical fiction is crafted under the ticking clock of world events. Michael also shared some news about an upcoming spy thriller film he is directing with Noomi Rapace in the lead. Good news for the Brits, The Cormorant Hunt is scheduled to be released in the UK in May.

Novelist and creative entrepreneur Kern Carter breaks down a practical creative blueprint for turning ideas into finished books and sustainable income—without chasing virality. We cover the path from self‑publishing to indie (Cormorant) and major houses (Scholastic, Penguin), how community-first marketing outperforms algorithms (Cry Magazine, a 5K+ Substack), and why emotion-led storytelling plus industry awareness wins. Kern explains how a middle‑grade novel aimed at young boys sparked word‑of‑mouth among teachers and helped move 15,000+ copies in a single year, and he shares direct advice: study your craft and study the industry. About the Guest: Kern Carter is a novelist, essayist, and filmmaker. He's written for Penguin and Scholastic, sold 15,000+ books in a year, founded Cry Magazine, and writes the Substack Writers Are Superstars. A creative entrepreneur who became a father at 18, Kern builds platforms that elevate new voices. Key Takeaways: At eight, Kern declared he'd be a novelist; publishing later felt “like magic” realized. He self‑published two novels, then vowed not to self‑publish again until traditionally published. Landing an agent took years; 2020 brought an indie deal (Cormorant), then offers from Scholastic and Penguin. He wrote two books in parallel; both released the same year, expanding reach and credibility. Sales crossed 15,000 largely via a Scholastic middle‑grade novel intentionally speaking to young boys. Teachers embraced the layered story and shared it; Scholastic's school distribution amplified exposure. Growth came from community, not algorithms: Cry Magazine, a Substack newsletter (5K+), direct emails. His process starts with emotion; characters' journeys ground even elements of magical realism. Writing is a necessary release, not a burden; burnout comes from life, not books. He builds platforms to open doors for other creators; storytelling deserves access, not gatekeeping. Core advice: study your craft deeply and study the industry with equal intensity. Creatives must make informed business choices—distribution, trends, costs—every creative decision is commercial. Community‑first marketing beat follower counts; real relationships outperformed vanity metrics. He invites writers to claim authority—every creative choice is both art and strategy. 6. The Cormorant and the Guano Trade: Wealth, Exploitation, and Intensive Farming AUTHOR: Stephen Moss BOOK TITLE: 10 Birds That Changed the World This section covers Cormorant guano, a highly prized fertilizer known to the Incas. In the 19th century, shipping guano from arid Peruvian islands made British businessman William Gibbs the wealthiest commoner in England. Tragically, this wealth was built upon the exploitation and deaths of Chinese indentured laborers. The guano boom (1840-1870) ended, leading to the invention of synthetic fertilizers (Haber-Bosch process), which enabled intensive farming that caused wildlife decline in Britain and North America. 1838

In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Zilla Jones about her debut novel, The World So Wide (Cormorant Books, 2025). Felicity Alexander should be charming audiences at New York's Metropolitan Opera, not under house arrest in Grenada in October 1983, as rumours swirl that United States troops are preparing to invade.Born and raised in Winnipeg, the daughter of a Grenadian woman and an absent white father, Felicity is blessed with enviable beauty and an extraordinary singing voice. Arriving in London to study opera in 1965, she finds early success and joy on stage, as well as a sense of belonging in the arms of the charming Claude Buckingham. Members of the West Indian Students Association, Claude and his friends are law students and activists. They plan to return to Grenada to overthrow the corrupt dictator, “Uncle” Percy Tibbs. Felicity and Claude's intense affair cannot survive their diverging destinies. Claude brings revolution to Grenada and becomes a minister in the new Black Pearls of Freedom government; Felicity devotes herself to music, conquering the racism and sexism of the opera world to rise to international stardom. The brighter she shines, the more she struggles to find her place and purpose in life. Her career in ascendance, Felicity accepts an invitation to perform in Grenada. The red sky of revolution calls to her almost as much as the hope of Claude's embrace. But their reunion is interrupted by a coup. Surrounded by soldiers and guns, Felicity's voice is born anew. Zilla Jones is an African-Canadian anti-racist educator, lawyer, mother, and singer of Caribbean, Chinese, and European heritage, writing on Treaty 1 territory (Winnipeg). She was born in the UK and now lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is a winner of the Journey Prize, a finalist for The Writers' Trust Bronwen Wallace Emerging Writers Award, and a finalist for the CBC Short Story Prize. Her writing has appeared in many literary journals including Event Magazine, The Fiddlehead, Prairie Fire, The Malahat Review, and Bayou Magazine. Learn more about your ad choices. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with author Greg Rhyno about his new mystery novel, Who By Water (Cormorant Books, 2025). After barely surviving her last case, Dame Polara trades her part-time detective gig for the safer — though no less chaotic — life of a single, working mother, picking up toys instead of picking locks, chasing after her two-year-old instead of chasing crooks. But when her ex-husband inexplicably drowns, and Dame becomes the prime suspect in his murder investigation, she must work alongside the woman who ruined her marriage to unravel the mystery of the man they both loved. Dame's sleuthing takes her to dive bars, industrial ports, and eventually, Toronto Island, where her ex spent his final days with a community of secretive and temperamental artists. As she comes closer to the complicated truth, Dame realizes that in order to clear her name and protect her family, she'll have to re-examine everything she thought she knew about the people she loved and left behind. About Greg Rhyno: Greg Rhyno is the author of Who by Fire, first of the Dame Polara Mysteries, and To Me You Seem Giant, which was nominated for a ReLit Award and an Alberta Book Publishing Award. His writing has appeared in a number of journals, including Hobart, Riddle Fence, The Quarantine Review, and PRISM International. He completed an MFA at the University of Guelph and lives with his family in Guelph, Ontario. Learn more about your ad choices.
