If you've got a fussy eater in your family, you know the struggle: endless refusals, creative sneaking tactics and a constant feeling of guilt that it's somehow your fault. In this episode, I share how my son went from a firm “no” to broccoli for four years to finally enjoying it again –without a battle. The story isn't just about broccoli, though. 010: Sensory Processing Disorder & How to Get Kids to Eat Healthy Anyway

Sensory Processing Disorder refers to difficulties that happen in some children where their brain struggles to make sense of input coming from the sensory environment. Information comes to our brain through our five senses. The brain has to make sense of it so that we can react appropriately. The brains of kids with SPD struggle to make sense of this information quickly and effectively. This usually impacts eating in some way. There is a difference between picky eaters and kids with true feeding disorders. Kids that are picky won't eat some foods, but at least they have a range of foods they eat. Kids with feeding disorders usually have less than 20 foods in their diet, and they may even be brand or presentation specific.Usually, the first step for BOTH of these types is exposure to new foods without expecting them to eat them. Listen to the interview to find out how to get kids to eat a wider variety of foods by asking them not to eat!Resources We Mention for Sensory Processing Disorder and Picky EatersMore on problem feeders vs. picky eaters and strategies for picky eatersMary Voogt is an expert on SPD as well because her own kids struggle with sensory processing. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. On today's episode, Jenn dives into one of the most requested topics - health and nutrition for kids and teens. This episode is pointed toward families with kids ten to seventeen who are either starting to feel uncomfortable with their body, curious about health and nutrition, or told by a doctor they need to do something to improve their health. Jenn discusses how to give kids confidence, teach them appropriate portion sizes, create positive habits, and empower them to make good choices most of the time.IN THIS EPISODE:●   [3:07] Jenn discusses the kids and family program that she offers.●   [7:20] What can be the challenges in getting kids to eat healthily? ●   [9:49] How do we start empowering children and teach them that new ways of eating are a process?●   [10:24] Helping kids and teens understand what the goal is. Why is their health important to them? ●   [14:28] Helping kids understand food groups and teaching them how and why to eat healthy.●   [18:28] Jenn talks about portion sizes in ways appropriate for the age of the child.●   [21:30] The use of the phrases “more or less (fewer).”●   [25:00] Understanding what hunger and fullness feel like. ●   [26:30] What does it look like when kids aren't in control of their food choices?●   [30:30] Jenn dives into what movement/activity could look like for kids.●   [34:01] Creating habits around what we do most of the time.●   [38:22] What does peer pressure look like around building your wellness community? What are internal pressure and external pressure?●   [41:04] What are the signs and symptoms of stress?KEY TAKEAWAYS●   It's about empowering children to understand their food choices. Ask them what they are willing to do and what they aren't willing to do. The goal is to cultivate confidence. ●   Energizers vs. energy zappers - having kids understand food groups - what is protein, fiber, and fat? What are quality carbohydrates? ●   “Fridge First” helps us increase the quality of food we get each day. Food can be cooked in various ways and taste differently in each way. Encourage trying foods prepared in different ways. ●   “Most of the time” - Eating a certain way, getting protein, fat, and carbs in, and having the family eat a certain way - most of the time. There will be exceptions to the rules, which results in a healthy relationship with food. ●   All you can do is all you can do. And all you can do is enough. Don't add to the challenges; just focus on how you can make it happen. ●   We often don't have to focus on the food; we need to focus on all these other things - exercise, fresh air, stress, homework etc. ●   Keep moving forward and keep getting better. We learn and we grow as we go!QUOTES: ●   “It doesn't matter to my client who is 11 years old and who isn't necessarily doing the grocery shopping. It's about empowering her to understand the food choices and understand the impact of the food choices so she can make the choice for herself vs. everybody else trying to control it all and her choosing something, and everybody saying, “are you sure” that's not helpful.” - Jenn Trepeck●   “Especially for kids and teens, it's about teaching them the tools that will last forever, that they can do forever.” - Jenn Trepeck●   “Part of this whole process is increased awareness. When we go back to energy, when we go back to the checklist of the things we want to tackle in a day, we can see where things are happening or where things aren't happening and why that's the case, and we can start to draw the connections.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramJenn's Saffron Extract Supplement, US/Canadian ListenersJenn's Saffron Extract Supplement, Global Listeners

Mealtime with kids — Is it possible for it to be low-stress AND nutritious? Nicole Christensen wears many hats: CF-L4, owner of CrossFit Roots, Seminar Staff Flowmaster, CrossFit Nutrition Course Director, and, most importantly, mom of two. Her best tip: Keep it simple and offer a small selection of healthy options to keep the decisions and negotiations to a minimum. At breakfast, she keeps it quick and easy by offering a fruit and a protein, which vary based on what's in the house. For lunches and snacks, she likes to have a variety of good choices available so her girls can make their own selections. At dinner, the kids eat what the adults eat: typically grilled meat, some form of potato, and a vegetable. If this all sounds too good to be true, Christensen shares that when her girls come across foods they don't want to eat, oftentimes it simply takes patience and time for them to change their minds. Knowing what's best when it comes to nutrition for kids, let alone plant-based options, is so hard! Today's expert shares all the facts. There is so much conflicting information out there, weeding through it all can be a full time job. But Whitney Tabaie is here to help make the job a whole lot easier! Whitney English Tabaie is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Personal Trainer, author, and co-founder of Plant-Based Juniors, a community helping parents raise healthy, conscious children. She is also the founder of the website/YouTube channel, Whitney E. RD. and co-author of The Plant-Based Baby and Toddler. Whitney's mission is to help people make educated decisions about the food they eat by providing evidence-based information on popular nutrition topics and sharing healthy original recipes that fit her "Predominantly Plant-Based" nutrition philosophy. She has been featured on outlets like Good Day LA, Bon Appetit, Parents, Wall Street Journal, People, Today's Dietitian, and many more. When she isn't whipping up healthy meals in "Whit's Kitch," she can be found soaking up the California sun with her husband, two children, and pup, Mr. Chow. Grab her free supplement guide and The PB3 Plate - a visual guide to meal planning to help you on your journey! Nutritional Needs For Kids When it comes to kids, the major focus is growth. Both physical growth as it relates to size but also growth of bodily systems like the central nervous system and the brain. The brain grows more in first 2-3 years of life than ever! We need to make sure that kids are getting enough macronutrients. Macronutrients give kids calories which they need to grow. A main source of these are carbohydrates but they also need the other macronutrients, protein and fat. Kids also need specific micronutrients, here are a few important ones: Iron Iron is the most critical when it comes to nutrient needs. Kids have stores of iron from being in utero, but they eventually get through that so starting at about 6 months until about 12 months, the need for iron peaks. For example, the RDA for a baby is 11 mg versus that for a grown adult male is only 8mg. Babies at this age can be at risk for iron deficiency especially if they are solely breast fed because breast milk doesn't have much iron. This is why it is important to add fortified foods like fortified baby cereal to their diet. Babies need iron because it is so important for brain development and also for the development of red blood cells which are at a rise during this time. Choline Choline is important for retinol development and brain development. While choline is rich in animal based foods, there are also many plant-based foods that have choline such as legumes, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. DHA DHA is an omega 3 fatty acid. It is commonly found in fish however fish actually get it from the micro algae they eat. So you can get DHA from eating fish, supplements or even consuming a micro algae based oil. While we can make our own DHA from the alpha-linolenic acid (or ALA) we can get from many plant-based foods, the conversion rate is low so we still need supplementation to fill the gap. Is a plant-based diet ok for children? Yes! There are so many misconceptions with plant-based diet and kids. But more and more research is showing how a plant-based diet actually has many benefits for children. The major organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics, World Health Organization and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics all agree that eating plant rich diets are extremely beneficial for kids. The key however is they must be appropriately planned, meaning that they are rich in whole foods, contain a variety of foods and include the nutrients discussed above. The children that do not thrive eating a plant rich diet are those that are malnourished, do not have an appropriate diet or have parents that are negligen...

Https://www.vinnietortorich.com/2021/07/fitness-and-nutrition-for-kids-episode-1877 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS THE IRWINS They found Vinnie through the Carolla show. Once the family watched the Fat Docs, they were all in. While they've fallen off the wagon a few times, Kyle, their son, sticks to it the most. He's a high school athlete. He plays football and soccer. NUTRITION FOR KIDS The school advises the kids that they can have candy and soda so long as they're active 30-60 minutes a day. This simply isn't true. You can't outrun a bad diet. Is a candy bar a bad diet? Probably not, but kids shouldn't have these every day. Kids can get away with these things, but they're setting themselves up for failure. Jason has had dietitians yell at him, saying Kyle is at risk of ketoacidosis (which is not true). If your kids want a hamburger after the game, let them! But encourage healthy eating and a healthy relationship with food the rest of the time. Vinnie wouldn't suggest candy bars or chips for athletes who want to be in good shape or more successful. Kids don't need to be in ketosis, but give them lots of red meat! Pork and fish are also up there, or other wild meats. Don't forget eggs. Protein is great for kids. Vinnie would rather teens eat eggs than protein powders. Some whey proteins can be good after a workout or before a game. But get the unflavored kinds! FITNESS FOR KIDS Vinnie wouldn't introduce kids to weights before they were 12. Weight-bearing exercises might be okay. But DO NOT overwork your kids. Kids shouldn't need Tommy Johns in highschool! Keep reps high (and therefore weight lighter). Kyle is 14, so Vinnie would be comfortable with him doing some limited weight training. As a Nutritionist and mum of a 6 & 7 year old you may think I've completely got our meals nutritionally balanced with clean plates every time….. My kids tastes are very different and one loves nothing more than processed food. Don't even try to go there with vegetables! Some meals are more successful than others, and when researching kids recipe books one day I came across Little Cooks Co.   My guest today is Helen who is also a Registered Nutritionist. Helen is mother to Artie and the founder and Director of Little Cooks Co. When her son Artie began weaning she was overwhelmed and excited by the opportunity to help his development and wellbeing through food. Helen began her own research into how she could give him the best start in life through the food, but there were a lot of conflicting messages. It was at this point that Helen decided to quit No10 and Little Cooks Co was born! Helen's goal is to help families make healthy choices for their children and themselves and remind them that nutritious food doesn't have to be boring! Most importantly, it is about the time spent together, creating those memories in the kitchen that will stay with them for life. So armed with plenty experience, who better to answer some questions about childrens nutrition: Why some children don't like veg & tips to help kids eat veg? Now more than ever our children are showing the effects of having diets made up of processed foods and manufactured sugars. Even if you have a picky eater, there are ways to ensure that their diet is well-rounded and nutritious. Listen in as I share what I make for my girls and why I choose the products I do.  Any parent of more than one kid will know that kids come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities. It didn’t take us long to realize that our daughters, while only about 18 months apart are completely different people. Their preferences and dietary likes and dislikes are night and day opposites. My oldest daughter loves eating all things healthy. She is the first one to encourage her friends to eat healthfully, and she soaks up everything I have to teach her. Every morning she drinks her own super-smoothie and loves it. (I share exactly how I make this in the episode. Listen in to hear!)  My youngest daughter, however, thinks cereals, pizzas, chips, and candies are all that a good diet needs to be complete. For her, we have to get a lot more creative in how we sneak in healthy foods and supplements. I share exactly how we do that as well.  The important thing to note is that our children’s diets are more important and impactful than one might think. Everything from their attitude, grades, and overall health is directly impacted by the foods that we allow them to eat.  Listen in to hear my resources, thoughts, and opinions on how you can get your children to eat more healthfully.   In This Episode: [01:12] What are some of the differences between kids’ health and adult health?  [03:41] Too much sugar and too many processed foods can affect the way kids act. [06:40] The ingredients in food here in the U.S. versus in Europe are different. European food is healthier. [10:32] The difference between healthy chocolate and unhealthy chocolate.  [12:47] Learn more about Talor’s oldest child, her food habits, and her morning super smoothie. [14:46] For adults, berries are the best type of fruit. [15:24] Something to note if you’re giving your kids supplements and powders. [17:40] Learn what oils and probiotics Talor uses in the smoothie. [21:03] C8 MCT oil is the highest quality. Make sure to buy good quality oils. [24:52] Why Talor uses EVOO in the smoothie as well. [26:53] Talor recaps the entire smoothie.  [29:35] Sugar cereals are terrible for your kids as is conventional milk.  [32:18] Listen as Talor shares a story about trying to figure out how to get his youngest daughter to eat healthfully. [34:23] Talor has to sneak healthy things into his youngest daughter’s diet. [37:41] What Talor does to get protein into her diet as well. [41:04] A good diet can change so many things for our kids.  [44:25] If you found anything helpful in this episode, share it.
