Mini-Retirements Are the New Early Retirement – with Mom of Six, Jillian Johnsrud

#600: Jillian Johnsrud was falling apart. After suffering a miscarriage, she couldn't pull herself together to return to her job as a youth pastor in DC. She decided to take a month off. That unexpected break became Jillian's first "mini-retirement" — a deliberate step away from work for at least 30 days to focus on something meaningful.  Today, Jillian is a mom of six who has taken more than a dozen mini-retirements with her kids, who currently range in age from 8 to 17.  During her first mini-retirement, she and her best friend piled into her green Honda Civic and drove from DC to Seattle, leaving her 13-year-old son Micah at home with her husband. A couple years later, Jillian took Micah, then 15, to Glacier National Park in Montana for another mini-retirement. They saw mountain goats, kayaked together, and swam in ice-cold waters.  This trip created irreplaceable memories. Sadly, Micah died six years later.  His death changed how Jillian sees time. She now understands that meaningful moments don't wait for perfect timing - they either happen now or vanish forever.  Waiting for "someday" might mean missing chances forever.  This drives her philosophy about mini retirements — life contains fleeting seasons that we either embrace now or miss entirely. "To be able to share those memories with him there is priceless," Jillian tells us. This understanding shapes her approach with her other children too. From a 10-week road trip to 10 national parks in a pop-up camper to a recent six-month journey across the eastern United States with her five younger children (now ages 8-17), Jillian prioritizes experiences that fit each season of family life. Planning your own mini retirement? Jillian recommends focusing on four key areas: managing your time (pick just 2-3 priorities), addressing career logistics (craft a compelling story for your employer), saving money (about 6.5 percent of your income for a month off every other year), and preparing for emotional revelations. Jillian emphasizes the importance of separating your mini retirement fund from long-term retirement savings. This separate fund, which she calls the "in-between bucket," allows you to spend freely on experiences now rather than postponing all enjoyment until traditional retirement age. As Jillian puts it: "You can't postpone every good thing in your life." Timestamps: Note: Timestamps will vary on individual listening devices based on dynamic advertising run times. Joseph Hogue of the YouTube channel "Let's Talk About Money with Joseph Hogue" says investors want to keep the bulk of their money in simple buy-and-hold strategies and shouldn't be swayed by wild recommendations coming from the blogging and podcasting community, but also says that they should scratch the itch of their fun side -- if they have one -- by taking controlled chances with the fun-money portion of their portfolio. Jillian Johnsrud, host of the "Retire Often" podcast, discusses why and how people should plan regular breaks and re-sets in their career. Shane Walker, chief executive officer at Qube Money, talks about how modern tools are helping consumers take control of their money in ways that, until recently, would not have been possible. Financial adviser Jim Blankenship — the blogger behind "Financial Ducks in a Row" — talks about why consumers and investors are feeling uncomfortable with the stock market in record-high territory. Ava Johns, affiliate marketing specialist at Turbotenant.com discusses how affiliate marketing is used by influencers and popular blogs and podcasts, and how consumers may want to pay attention to how those deals work. Plus Joe Saul-Sehy of the Stacking Benjamins podcast gives his impressions of how FinCon — and the world of bloggers, podcasters and content creators — has changed over the years.

This final season of my show is going fast and I only have six full months left to share with you the final topics and guests before we say our final goodbye. I initially intended May to be focused on travel in anticipation for summer. I have been a financial planner now for over 14 years and in all of those years, I think every single one of my clients was always planning for some trip during the summer months and this summer is no different. Whether the trips are for weddings, family reunions, kid's baseball games, concert events or just because, travel is always something we're planning with our clients.   Joining me today is Jillian Johnsrud, Progress Coach and founder of the site Retire Often. Full disclosure, we were going to talk about travel more but you'll see that our conversation took a turn into a subject matter that I think is travel-adjacent and that's mini-retirements and sabbaticals. I think this is actually the perfect kickoff episode to the month as nothing else could get you motivated to book travel than knowing you don't have to work for the next month. Curious about why you should plan your mini-retirement, stay tuned. For more information, visit the shownotes: https://www.martinisandyourmoney.com/show-notes/episode530-retire-often

The preconceived notion of the word “retirement” is one of the biggest hurdles to overcome here in the US. Be honest- what do you think of when you hear that someone is retiring? Maybe you think of someone who is a bit older or maybe they're past their prime. You might not go as far as to say they're “giving up”, but there's this idea that they've put in several decades of hard work and are now kicking back. And if you attempt to picture yourself in that situation, it's often so far off into the future that it's difficult to have any connection to that future version of you. Honestly you probably don't have any idea of what retirement might look like. Well, HOLD THOSE THOUGHTS, because these are precisely the types of problems that our friend Jillian Johnsrud loves to help folks navigate. She writes over at RetireOften.com, hosts a podcast by the same name, and coaches individuals who are looking to custom build a lifestyle that perfectly reflects their values, passion, and purpose. And while “retiring often” might sound like a luxury reserved for the ultra-wealthy, Jillian is here to point out that it's more achievable than you think. Today we discuss what constitutes a mini-retirement, how long they should be, the kinds of goals you should set during a mini-retirement, and how to negotiate one with your employer.   Want more How To Money in your life? This week we are joined by Jillian Johnsrud to define and discuss the mini-retirement strategy, and how taking a break to recover, relax, and re-strategize can propel you towards your FI goals! Sometimes the thought of taking a break can seem scary, or even the thought of relaxing can be more stressful than it's meant to be. But, taking the time and space away from your usual structure can allow you the space and bandwidth to pursue other avenues that you are passionate about! While the thought of a mini-retirement can leave you feeling unstructured from your usual 9-5, it can usher in more time for hobbies, side hustles, or even new jobs! So, while your journey to FI may be filled with rules and guidelines set in place to help you reach your FI goal, remember that there is no harm in taking an active rest in order to restructure your goals and re-motivate you!  Jillian Johnsrud: Website: jillianjohnsrud.com Podcast: Everyday Courage Book: "Fire the Haters: Finding Courage to Create Online in a Critical World" Timestamps: 0:59 - Introduction 3:34 - Building Fun Into Your Life 12:25 - The Purpose of Mini-Retirements 19:35 - Structuring A Mini Retirement And Avoiding Mistakes 28:25 - Gaining Momentum In A Mini-Retirement 37:17 - Mini-Retirement Negotiation 45:55 - Planning A Mini-Retirement 50:42 - Conclusion Resources Mentioned In Today's Episode: "Influence : The Psychology of Persuasion" by Robert Cialdini Subscribe to The FI Weekly! Jillian Johnsrud is an author, blogger, podcaster, and coach who covers personal finance. But she's not just providing stock tips and savings plans. Jillian wants us to rethink our relationship to money itself. This passion is personal for her. When she and her family encountered major medical and student debt, she began to study how the language of finance is passed down – often detrimentally – from one generation to the next. Despite major setbacks, Jillian and her family are now financially independent, and it's her mission to help others do the same. She puts herself out there online every day, which inevitably invites some detractors. That's what her new book is about. It's called “Fire the Haters,” and it's a study on how to keep online discourse productive, and when to ignore bad-faith arguments.

Today's episode features Jillian Johnsrud, author of Fire The Haters. We actually featured Jillian once prior on our show in Episode 68. In that episode, we cover Jillian's background (quick recap below): Jillian got married at age 19 She saw from an early age that money gave you options They started off their marriage with $55k worth of debt From the start, they always stuck to a goal to save 50% They made some difficult choices like living in a camper or roommates They would end up investing and buying rentals This would lead them to be financially independent at age 32 We also discussed her Everyday Courage podcast. Now, she's keeping the courage theme going by inspiring others to put out their thoughts, help, concerns....life on the internet despite the trolls that hide behind every digital corner. Jillian walks us through who to listen to and who not to. Where you should focus your energy, and what will just be a waste of time. Most of us have something we put out into the world even if we're not writers, and with that comes criticism. Today's episode is the perfect guide to navigating our critical world.
