When it came to how popular a band's music was, it was the charts that told you. It was the charts that determined radio station song lists and how often they changed. While maybe not quite all of the songs on this record made the charts, even though that's what the album title hints at, all of the artists were on the charts at one time or another. So, get ready to hear music makers that were high up in a specific list at one time or another in Volume 180: Hit Makers. More information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it. Join us for a wide-ranging conversation with our guest today, Derek Thompson. We're big fans of his work so it hardly seems necessary to introduce him, but he's a senior editor over at The Atlantic where he's been for 15 years and has since been recognized for his narratives on topics like the future of work and the science of popularity. The latter of which led to the book "Hit Makers," a best-seller that delves into the secret histories of pop culture hits and the dynamics of what makes something popular. Derek also hosts the podcast Plain English, offering weekly insights into the latest news, the things he's most interested in, and important issues that our society faces today- like the changing views of what work should and shouldn't be. We also discuss Derek's craft beer equivalent, the intersection of the board game Ticket To Ride and higher ed, the vibecession, polarization in media, the decline of workism, the rise of AI in the workplace, and more! Derek Thompson is a staff writer for The Atlantic and host of the podcast Plain English. “I am an inveterate dilettante. I lose interest in subjects all the time. Because what I find interesting about my job is the invitation to solve mysteries. And once you solve one, two, three mysteries in a space, then the meta-mystery of that space begins to dim. And all these other subjects—that's the new unlit space that needs the flashlight. And that's the part of the job that I love the most: that there are so many dark corners in the world. And I've just got this flashlight, and I can just shine it wherever the hell I want.” Show notes: @DKThomp Thompson's Atlantic archive 00:00 Hit Makers: How to Succeed in an Age of Distraction (Penguin • 2018) 00:00 Plain English with Derek Thompson (The Ringer) 05:00 "Why Americans Suddenly Stopped Hanging Out" (The Atlantic • Feb 2024) 18:00 "The Americans Who Need Chaos" (The Atlantic • Feb 2024) 23:00 "America's Loneliness Epidemic Comes for the Restaurant" (The Atlantic • Mar 2024) 35:00 "Stop Trying to Ask 'Smart Questions'" (The Atlantic • Jan 2023) 39:00 "The Future of Everything With Derek Thompson" (The Bill Simmons Podcast • Feb 2024) 40:00 "What Many Economists (and I) Got Wrong About This Economy" (Plain English • Mar 2024) 43:00 "How Hollywood's Hit Formula Flopped—and What Could Come Next" (Plain English • Mar 2024) Learn more about your ad choices. Text Hawk to 66866 to become part of "Mindful Monday." Join 10's of thousands of your fellow learning leaders and receive a carefully curated email from me each Monday morning to help you start your week off right... Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Derek Thompson is a staff writer at The Atlantic and author of the books Hit Makers and On Work: Money, Meaning, Identity, and the host of the podcast Plain English. Notes: Before graduating from high school, Derek appeared in several theatrical productions at the Folger Shakespeare Theater and the Shakespeare Theater. Why do Americans care so much about work? workism is “the belief that work is not only necessary to economic production but also the centerpiece of one's identity and life's purpose.” Jobs, Careers, or Callings: One theory of work holds that people tend to see themselves in jobs, careers, or callings… The Bow and Arrow metaphor… We need stress, but we need to let it go. You pull back on the bow and arrow… Then you let it go. Stress + Rest = Growth “Happiness means being balanced between busyness and leisure.” The mark of a good leader? Don't be afraid to ask the ignorant question… Have the confidence to ask it. Derek had breakfast with the prominent CEO… The CEO was deeply curious about Derek. Asked him a lot of questions, listened intently, and asked great follow-ups. Great leaders make their conversations about the other person. Follow your curiosity with great rigor. That same leader also had the emotional intelligence to not bother Derek Jeter while he was having breakfast. He knew there would be a better time to meet. The book, an anthology of Thompson's articles for The Atlantic, includes a new adaptation of his essay on workism, a term that he defines as “the belief that work is not only necessary to economic production but also the centerpiece of one's identity and life's purpose.” “The decline of traditional faith in America has coincided with an explosion of new atheisms,” Thompson writes. “Some people worship beauty, some worship political identities, and others worship their children. But everybody worships something. And workism is among the most potent of the new religions competing for congregants.” How Derek earned a job writing for The Atlantic out of college? After being rejected 30 times, he applied for a fellowship with The Atlantic and got it. He then earned a job writing about economics for them even though he had no background or interest in economics. "It's like the New York Yankees offered me to play second base even though I played catcher my whole life." How Derek earned a role as a podcast host working for Bill Simmons? "Bill had me on his podcast to talk about Covid after he read some things I'd written for The Atlantic. That was sort of an audition. After he had me on, he asked if I wanted to have my own podcast on his network. We eventually came up with the name Plain English." The name of the show is very important. You want people to be able to easily say, "Hey, I listen to Plain English." How to predict the next great quarterback? It's contingent upon their surroundings (their coaching staff, receivers, linemen, etc...) Life/Career Advice: Skin thickness -- It can't be so thin that you can't accept criticism, but it can't be so thick that you stop listening. You have be somewhere in the middle. Working hours — no large country globally averages more hours of work per year than the United States. Americans work longer hours, have shorter vacations, get less unemployment, and retire later.

Derek Thompson is an author, writer, speaker, and podcaster. He wears a lot of hats and his interests vary from economics, to the media, to politics, to sports, to business. He is someone who definitely has range when it comes to his ability to write, cover, research, and think about today's most pressing and interesting topics. “Interesting” is the word I would use to described Derek. He's interested in a multitude of things, he has a background in theatre, has a passion for wine, and so much more. Derek does not call himself an expert; he's a jack-of-all-trades. But, in my opinion, Derek is an expert. He dives deep into whatever he's focused on and whatever topic he's writing about. He's a regular contributor for NPR's Here and Now, he has his own podcast with The Ringer called Plain English, and he has an amazing book called Hit Maker, which I highly recommend you check out if you're interested at all in how to succeed in an age of distraction. Derek had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “I range widely not just because I think it's good for my writing, but because I can't help it” (5:50). “I'm an every section of the newspaper kind of guy” (6:30). “Specialize at the intersection of specialties” (7:40). “If you explore a bunch of domains, and then hybridize two of those domains and realize that you're really good inside of that fit, and then dig deep into that, then you can really exploit that and be one of one” (12:15). “Boredom is an interesting signal from your mind that what you're doing right now, what you're surrounded by, what you're thinking about, isn't fully grabbing you. And when that happens, that's a really good excuse to explore” (15:55). “I love to explore new ideas” (16:15). “There's a myth that we live with in capitalist culture that people want new things” (19:15). “Subtle familiarity drives popularity” (19:35). “Hits lie at the intersection of familiarity and novelty” (20:40). “In order to understand what the book's about, you have to write it” (23:15). “I try to be a surrogate between this world of expertise and the world of lay people understanding” (30:30). “I don't want to be driven by popularity because I don't want to be driven by extrinsic factors that I don't control” (31:10). “The negative stuff, dose for dose, weighs much more heavily than the positive stuff” (34:00). “The judgment of crowds can really pull us down” (34:30). “How do I maintain an openness to negative feedback so that I can learn from it?” (38:40). “I feel most alive giving talks” (47:05). “I feel calmer speaking in front of crowds than I do interviewing one individual” (47:50). “I love the novelty of writing” (52:20). “I try to stay within a narrow temperature band” (48:35). “You don't know what's going to happen. You don't know how long you'll be around. You have a greater appreciation for the here and now and the specialness of every moment and every year and day” (1:01:00). “No moment will be as alive as the one you're in right now, so savor it” (1:01:15). “I try to be across so many different ideas that it's important for me to make some parts of my life really easy so that I have a lot of energy to approach the hard stuff” (1:07:45). Additionally, I'd encourage you to purchase Derek's book, Hit Maker, which you can buy anywhere books are sold. You can also follow Derek on Twitter and check out his podcast, Plain English with Derek Thompson on the Ringer Podcast Network. Thank you so much to Derek for coming on the podcast! Paul Flannery a singer, song writer and producer. Music has helped me through the journey of life and has been an outlet for me, allowing me to express myself. I have known from a very young age that music was not only just something I listened to, but it is a way of life. It doesn't matter what situation I am going through; music has helped me get through it all. My last 2 songs were written, produced and sang in the back of an RV, determination allowing me to push through. I have been played on the radio in several places such as, KFMA Tucson Arizona, KISS FM Arkansas, Jamshphere Radio, New York Live and The Fierce Female Network. These stations were both FM and Internet stations.
"Still on this side of the daisies" is now my new favorite response when asked how the day is going. Het eerste boek is Nassim Nicholas Talebs Skin in the Game. Geweldig boek, aldus Rutger. En dan: Peter Thiels boek From Zero to One. Geweldig boek, aldus Rutger. En dan: Peter Thiels boek From Zero to One. Everything SA Music Premium South African Music Content.Mapara A Jazz is one of the buzzing bands in South Africa right now. But the boy band, which is made up of the friends Lenny Sbechu and Man Malaya Wa Tshwenya, has not just appeared on the music scene in the country. As a matter of fact, they have been around since 2007.Yes, that's over a decade ago. But the Rainbow Nation seems to have slept on their creative spark. That was until they released the song “John Vuli Gate.” The song snapped the attention of the country near instantaneously and even spawned a dance challenge. And, just like that, it appeared like Mapara A Jazz has arrived. Apparently the group has never doubted it would one day snap the attention of music lovers in the country. In fact, Lenny Sbechu and Man Malaya Wa Tshwenya had previously stated that they knew their time will come. They therefore never gave up. But because it has been so long waiting for the success they desired, when “John Vuli Gate” blew up, they were like, wow!The trajectory of Mapara A Jazz's career is pretty interesting. Because they perform regularly at taverns and tents, they also call themselves MaBen10.The group's music leans somewhat toward amapiano, but as they would never stop telling those who care to listen, their piano is different and they are known for the original Pitori sound, bacardi music.https://www.instagram.com/everythings...#ESAM #MaparaAJazz #EverythingSAMusicTV #JohnVuliGate #Amapiano

Every weekday afternoon, Michelangelo Signorile offers up hard-hitting analysis and commentary, and with just enough laughter at the sheer lunacy that often passes for political discourse in America. As a gay author and activists he takes on the forces of discrimination and bigotry, and challenges those who cower. He reports on the news of the day in politics, media and pop culture, and he interviews all the big names — authors, newsmakers and icons from politics to entertainment. Signorile takes calls from listeners across North America, engaging in passionate discussion and often battling it out with dissenters — who occasionally even change their minds. It's Signorile's own brand of "conversion therapy,” as he calls it, “converting people from the nasty, vicious, perverted right-wing agenda to our more fun, fabulous and enlightened one." The Michelangelo Signorile Show broadcasts Monday through Friday, 3-6 p.m. ET (12-3 PT), on SiriusXM Progress 127 and can be heard across the continental United States and all of Canada. He is also a national security contributor for NBC News and MSNBC. He recently examined the rise of social media influence by publishing his first book entitled Messing With The Enemy: Surviving in a Social Media World of Hackers, Terrorists, Russians and Fake News. His research and writing focuses on terrorism, counterterrorism, social media influence and Russian disinformation. Clint’s tracking of terrorist foreign fighters allowed him to predict the rise of the Islamic State over al Qaeda in 2014. From 2014 – 2016, Clint worked with a team to track and model the rise of Russian influence operations via social media leading up to the U.S. Presidential election of 2016. This research led Clint to testify before four different Senate committees in 2017 and 2018 regarding Russia’s information warfare campaign against the U.S. and the West. Clint’s writing has appeared in a range of publications to include the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The Daily Beast, Politico, Lawfare, War On The Rocks and the Huffington Post. Before becoming a consultant, Clint served as a U.S. Army infantry officer, a FBI Special Agent, as the Executive Officer of the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point (CTC), as a consultant to the FBI’s Counter Terrorism Division (CTD) and National Security Branch (NSB), and as an analyst supporting the U.S. Intelligence Community and U.S. Special Operations Command. 50:00 Derek Thompson is a senior editor at The Atlantic magazine and a weekly news analyst for NPR's "Here and Now." What kind of story does your branding tell? Does your story connect with customers and persuade them to buy, or is it just noise in an already noisy world? On this episode of the ROI Online Podcast, author Allen Adamson shares the key ingredients to a powerful brand story—and to tell it right so you get better results.Allen Adamson is an author of four books, as well as the co-founder and managing partner of Metaforce. He wanted to be a filmmaker, but after he didn't have luck in Hollywood, he went into advertising so he could put his storytelling talents to good use. What he liked about the advertising business was most of the problems are nonlinear. They don't have any obvious or easy solutions. You have to combine creativity with problem solving and reasoning to find the best options. One thing Allen wants business owners to realize is that there's a slight difference between brand and branding. Your brand is what your story is. Your branding is how you get that idea in people's heads. Branding contains anything from your logo and colors to your ads and social media posts. But if your story isn't good, it doesn't matter how flashy your branding is. Customers won't give it a second thought.During the chat, Allen and Steve also discussed:The biggest lesson Allen learned when he tried to make it in HollywoodBrand stories that miss the mark (and why they're ineffective)How to simplify your brand story so customers can digest itAllen's strategy for getting clients to break their mindset and buy inThe secret to being successful in marketingYou can learn more about Allen here:www.metaforce.comFollow Allen on LinkedInRead Allen's books:BrandSimple: How the Best Brands Keep It Simple & SucceedBrandDigital: Simple Ways Top Brands Succeed in the Digital WorldThe Edge: 50 Tips from Brands That LeadShift Ahead: How the Best Brands Stay Relevant in a Fast-Changing WorldRead the books referenced in this podcast:Hit Makers by Derek ThompsonGood to Great by Jim CollinsGet your copy of Steve Brown's book, The Golden Toilet. Nate Holder BA, MMus is a musician, author, speaker and music education consultant based in London. He is an advocate for decolonising music education and has been writing, speaking and consulting on the subject for the last five years. Nate brings his passion and skill in public speaking into leading CPD training and workshops; helping address bias and underrepresentation in music classrooms, departments, hubs and boards across the UK. His first book, 'I Wish I Didn’t Quit: Music Lessons', became an Amazon bestseller and is currently available worldwide. His second book, ‘Why Is My Piano Black and White’, was released in Sept 2020. Nate talked about his own musical education, and what might be missing from mainstream education more generally, in particular due to racial bias. We also discuss his poem, 'If I Were a Racist', featured on his #decolonisemusiced blog, including the reactions to this, both positive and negative. Nate also refers to his own experience of music therapy, taking a music therapy module as part of his music degree, and refers briefly to the book Hit Makers, by Derek Thompson. Phillip Ewell's address to the annual meeting of the Society for Music Theory is here, and the reference to his article on Schenker's racism is as follows: Ewell, P. A. (2020). Music Theory and the White Racial Frame. Music Theory Online, 26(2).
Every kid on the planet is told to, “Eat your veggies – they’re good for you!” Yet, as a parent, you probably shouldn’t say that to your kids. This episode begins with some fascinating research about what to tell kids about healthy foods and what not to tell them. https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/don-t-tell-kids-why-veggies-are-good-for-them-study-suggests-1.1833274 What if I told you that nothing really goes viral? You’d probably say, “Of course it does – cat videos, songs, lots of things go viral.” Well, not according to Derek Thompson, senior editor at the Atlantic magazine and author of the book, Hit Makers: How to Succeed in an Age of Distraction (https://amzn.to/3iwagNK). Derek reveals exactly how things become popular – and it isn’t the way you might think. In schools today there is a lot of emphasis on typing on a keyboard rather than writing with pen and paper. So you may be surprised to hear the benefits kids receive by simply writing on paper – and maybe schools should re-think their policies that de-emphasize penmanship in early grades. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/03/science/whats-lost-as-handwriting-fades.html?_r=0 Who hasn’t been socially anxious? I am sure you’ve been in one of those situations where a lot is on the line or you don’t know anyone and it makes it uncomfortable and difficult. This is especially true for the millions of people who are naturally socially anxious anyway. With some help is clinical psychologist Ellen Hendriksen author of How to Be Yourself: Quiet Your Inner Critic and Rise Above Social Anxiety (https://amzn.to/33s5jyS). If you've stepped onto a dance floor in the last few decades, then you've likely heard "I Can't Wait." It's the song that held sway over the pop charts for a good chunk of 1986 and inspired a generation of musicians. Countless DJs, producers and performers have taken a stab at reworking, sampling and covering the track with Icona Pop and ?uestlove being the most recent to take a stab at it.Behind it all are two self-described "jazz hippies," Valerie Day and John Smith aka Nu Shooz. When pressed to reveal their favorite take on the track? Well, the two agreed without hesitation that it was 2010 hip-hop hit "Buzzin" from Mann and 50 Cent. The two have continued to make and teach music since 1988's "Told U So," but had largely abstained from touring as they focused on raising their son. That changed last year when he graduated."We got these calls to come out and do these 80s tours, and we always said no because we were too busy," says Day. "So when he graduated, we finally we felt like we're free! We can go out into the world again and have a great time!" They got the band back together and began writing new music which would become the "Bagtown" album. They play a record release show at the Star Theater on May 21, featuring the indubitably groovy DJ Bobby D.The wife and husband duo don't shy away from their past success, but say they've moved in a new direction with their latest album. It's a departure from the sound that originally earned them a place as 80s dance music legends. Smith tells us that ""Bagtown" is square in the middle of 1974. "There's not a synthesizer on the record, it's real piano," he says. "I was getting interested in vocal arranging in a new way and also interested in the Philly soul producers, Gamble and Huff, and that kind of thing. So, I wanted to go for a real organic sounding record." The band stopped by the OPB studio to play a live show during a recent open house. We have highlights from the interview and performance above, and stay tuned for a future feature on Oregon Art Beat.
