Scotty Lago has a path to pro snowboarding that's different than almost anyone I've interviewed. Most high school dropouts don't have Olympic Medals to go along with a grip of X Games and Dew Tour hardware, but that's what Scotty Lago did. Along the way, he was part of the legendary Frends Crew, he filmed with Grenade, he filmed with Travis Rice for the biggest movies in snowboard history, and he did it all while riding for Flow Snowboards. When all was said and done, Scotty didn't retire into the sunset; he's now following his other passion of hunting, and just like in his snowboard career, he's already a sponsored hunter, and who knows how bug that world can get for Scotty. This is a fun podcast with an unfiltered legend and former Flow TM, Andrew Mutty asks the Inappropriate Questions. The Boys are back to chat grass roots BMX race programs and the void that exists where gold could be dug. Speaking of which, we lord Boyd Hilder and his X Games gold medal and challenge him to race because he's too fit for freestyle. Then KY wonders who runs BMX because it seems that smiles were rationed over at the WA national round, or weren't packed by the AC roadshow. We're ill-informed, uneducated BMXers, and probably just plain ole naïve, but we just want BMX to be it's own identity within the dark empire. Use the Force Luke, unbridle us from the clutches of lycra and set us free in the universe.
Another X Games, another year that everyone jumps up and down about the judging! In 2023, Japan FMX Best Trick, there were 7 riders who were gunning for the Gold Medal and this time it was Jacko Strong who took home his 7th Gold Medal in Best Trick discipline, equalling Travis Pastrana's 7 in Freestyle and Ronnie Renner's 7 in Step-Up! Of course, there's always controversy around judging and this time it played out with the two big dogs of Best Trick - Jacko Strong and Rob Adelberg who have enough Gold Medals to sink a ship! They both threw down Front Flip No Handers, and you could very easily argue Adelberg had this one wrapped up. But Jacko won with the 'UnTucked' Frontie. I personally couldn't care less - both riders were freaking awesome and all 7 riders were on their game! But let me know what you think. This is my personal thoughts as I watched it all play out. 1. Jackson Strong 96.33 2. Rob Adelberg 96.00 3. Harry Bink 95.00 4. Josh Sheehan 92.66 5. Taka Higashino 89.00 6. Adam Jones 86.00 7. We have been so used to watching the same old riders being shuffled out to a Best Whip competition at X Games since about 2010. It has been so hard for any young guys to get a foot in the door to try prove themselves against so many medal winners and contenders from Jeremy 'Twitch' Stenberg, Ricky Carmichael, Jarryd McNeil, Tom Parsons, Edgar Torronteras, Josh Sheehan, Genki 'Wanky' Watanabe etc. So when this new kid from Belgium got his shot at X Games Japan and snuck his way onto his first podium in 3rd place at his first X Games appearance, we knew there was more to this story than just one event and we'll never see him again. X Games at Axell Hodges' home compound provided the best ramp for JVS to show his skills, with that huge whip over the 120ft ramp where he just obliterated everyone elses whips that came before. Taking the X Games Gold Medal was a no-brainer, and the invitations he received to ride at Red Bull Imagination was all but secured, even for a Monster Energy rider. And we finally caught up with Julien down in South Africa at the unique King of the Whip competition held at Montecasino in Johannesburg where he was crowned King in front of a screaming 5,000 strong crowd to take it out at the 4th ever event. This interview was held a couple of days later when we were trying to recover from the after party and had checked out some of the sights of Africa with a Safari as well. If you're listening to this on Spotify, Google or Apple Podcasts, I'd recommend you jump on over to Recast to watch the full video interview which was put together we heaps more footage from KING of the WHIP and a huge shout out to Grant Lucas for doing it for us! Nico Porteous nailed the preview - now it's time to do likewise at "the big O-show".The Kiwi freeskier today confirmed his status as a gold-medal favourite for the Winter Olympics in Beijing, securing back-to-back superpipe victories at the X Games in Aspen.Porteous stunned the competition with a flawless fourth and final run, unleashing what commentators described as "one of the most technical runs ever" landed in the competition. The 20-year-old later revealed it was the first time - in competition or training - he had completed that particular run. And now with the Olympics looming, he was determined to replicate both the run and the result in Beijing."That's as good as it gets," Porteous told Newstalk ZB's Elliott Smith. "That's my Olympic run. Maybe one or two things that are a real Hail Mary, but that's it."I've never done that before in a competition - I've never even done that before in training. It was the first time I've ever done that combo on that run and I guess I couldn't have really made it count much more."That's what I've been working on and the Olympics are in two weeks. That was why we came to X Games, for the purpose of training in the final event before the big O-show."Porteous was quick to stress his performance would offer no guarantees on the halfpipe in Beijing, a competition that begins on February 17.But completing that sequence of tricks - a sequence Porteous acknowledged would sound like "complete gibberish" to many - did provide an invaluable psychological boost."It's given me confidence in my skiing," he said. "I wouldn't say it's given me confidence in a result but confidence in my ability and the fact I've planned this run and can actually do it."It was the night of my dreams, to be honest, and I'm really proud of what happened."That feeling must have been enhanced by the manner in which Porteous claimed victory. The 2018 Olympic bronze medallist was in third place heading into his final run and as, the last skier to compete, knew perfection would reap gold, New Zealand's third in Aspen following Zoi Sadowski-Synnott's double."Just hyper-focused," Porteous said of his mindset before the run. "I'm just so focused on the task at hand and in that warzone mentality."What goes through my head, it's pretty blank to be honest. There's not really much happening."There's maybe tiny voices talking to me in each trick, making sure I'm focusing on the right thing. Other than that, the music's blasting and I'm just letting my body do the work and trusting myself and the preparation I've had."That preparation saw Porteous consign two-time Olympic gold medalist David Wise to bronze. The Kiwi will now fly to Europe for some final fine-tuning to the run he hopes will produce gold in Beijing, the rare sequel that would exceed even the original."I'm still speechless," Porteous said. "Every time I look at the medal and think what happened, I can't believe it."- Kris Shannon, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
New Zealand freeskier Nico Porteous has won his second X Games gold medal in Aspen, Colorado - just two weeks ahead of the Winter Olympics. For his last drop in, the 20-year-old pulled off what commentators described as the most technical halfpipe run ever landed in a competition. Nico - who won the bronze medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang - is on his way to Zurich now where he will prepare for the Games in Beijing. He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
Coach of Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, Sean Thompson, joins the show to talk us through Zoi's gold medal run at Aspen on Saturday morning, and how important this run was for her coming up to the Winter Olympics.LISTEN ABOVE

In Episode 27, we welcomed Steve Fisher to the podcast. Fisher, a two-time X Games gold medalist, worked through his experience with US Ski and Snowboard, getting to the X Games, the years of dedication it took to win gold medals, the inequities of snowboarding media coverage, and life post-extreme sport. Ever wondered how Pro Athletes achieve great success and push the limits? Do they feel fear? Find out in Episode 005 of the Vereless N Free podcast as I, Heather Bailey, the podcast host, interview Olympic and X-Games Medalist Snowboarder, Shannon Dunn Downing. My conversation with Shannon will encourage you to "live your dreams" the way she inspired me after I had to the opportunity to meet her as part of a magazine sweepstakes I won when I was 18 years old! (You'll hear all about that crazy experience in this episode too.) Shannon shares how pursuing her passion of snowboarding led to her becoming a sponsored rider. She never even dreamed she could become a professional in a sport which, at that time, was so new to the world. Representing the US in snowboarding's Olympic debut and becoming the first US Snowboarder to take home a medal, she greatly surpassed her dreams. Not to mention her 2 X-Games Gold medals and her spontaneous appearance at a Red Bull Air & Style event in Switzerland going off a 60 ft jump! Shannon's hard work, determination, focus, and positivity contributed not only to her success in snowboarding, but also to the equality and progression for women in the sport. Like most athletes, she had to battle injuries along the way and shares some unreal stories that will inspire and make you laugh (like the time she insisted on staying awake during surgery!). During those hard times, she found the love of her Heavenly Father which has led her to become a woman of great faith! Shannon's current dreams are to publish the book she's writing and to keep the adventures going in her family life with her husband and two sons as they surf, snowboard, fly fish, and dive in their favorite spots. Shannon will remind you to try that thing you've been thinking about and embrace your failures when they happen. The most exciting dreams are going to have times of difficulty. Nate Adams won everything there is to win in Freestyle Motocross, and at the same time he was focused 100% on FMX progression, he began a glove-only brand called Deft Family which was revolutionary at the time. We catch up with 'The Destroyer' to find out how he was able to continue to be the man to beat at the top of his sport, while learning all new skills in business, marketing, logistics and trying to get the feel out of his glove that he had striven for in the beginning. Nate was in a special position to create gloves that even his fellow FMX competitors and friends all appreciated, having guys like Twitch, Taka Higashino, Jeremy McGrath and Travis Pastrana riding in gloves he had designed, it was the perfect launching pad on top of his own persona, to build a brand. This is a Masterclass for any aspiring MX, FMX or Action Sports athlete, on how to find balance in your life, while working to become the best you can be, and also how to capitalise on the unique situation you can find yourself in. We also find out how much of a toll on the body FMX takes when you are looking for back to back X Games Gold, or X-Fighters championships. At 37 years of age, Nate has endured some horror injuries which are catching up with him now, but it doesn't appear to have lessened his appeal for riding moto! One of the nicest guys in the sport, Nate has been a role model on and off the bike, and looking at the business of moto, Nate has pioneered a specific market of MX gear with the Deft gloves and it's awesome to see he's still just a fan of FMX after a stellar career. Matt Buyten needs specific weight training on his neck muscles simply to stand up straight with the huge haul of X Games Gold, Silver and Bronze medals he's picked up over the years in Moto Step Up. Even though the X Games website says he has 7 medals - in fact, he has 12 medals from all of the X Games events! See, sometimes the internet can get things wrong. But competing against the biggest names from Tommy 'Tomcat' Clowers to Ronnie Renner, Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, Brian Deegan, Twitch and taking gold medals over the lot! One of the nicest guys in the sport, he was in the crowd with most of the NVHC crew like Dustin Miller and Mike Mason watching as Travis Pastrana jumped into the San Francisco Bay (and received a massive fine for his antics!) to becoming an X Games Gold medallist, FMX legend over 20 years and also getting into Monster Trucks. Holding a record probably no other person on earth can claim, the only person to back flip a Motocross Bike and a Monster Truck! Strap yourself in for a really cool interview with B-10 and I do have to say sorry for the technical problems we encountered on this one. After doing the interview not once, but twice, the internet and USB port malfunctions were a pain in the backside, but I think you won't be able to notice too much! Thanks for tuning in! Undoubtedly one of the greatest ever Freestyle Motocross riders, Levi Sherwood stunned the FMX world when he won at his first ever appearance of the 2009 Red Bull X-Fighters event in Mexico City. Levi then stunned the world when he retired from competition only 10 years later in 2019, at the age of 28, when he was seemingly at the peak of his career. After a huge 2017 season, winning everything from X Games Gold in Freestyle MX and Best Trick, Nitro World Games and Red Bull X-Fighters, no one would have predicted Levi's retirement. Is it a coincidence that Levi's final X-Fighters was also the final ever X-Fighters!? You probably already know almost everything about the Rubber Kid from New Zealand, so in this episode, we go into the process of retirement but more importantly his next step into engineering with CNC, Titanium and of course what he's becoming so known for on social media, his Carbon Fibre work and creating his new projects. Motorcycle Manufacturer's and Factory Race Teams spend millions and millions of dollars every year on development. And Levi Sherwood, a one-man-band has modified his KTM 250sx to weigh in only at 89.5 kilograms wet (ready to ride, with fuel/oils/fluids!) We cover almost everything, from Dirt Bike geometry, how a proper BMX 360 could be pulled, but maybe destroying FMX at the same time. Also the work going into creating potentially a new Standard in Freestyle MX Ramp Production, and of course, his thoughts on what happened to Clinton Moore at X Games and that Next Gen crash. With the X Games Real Moto 2020 series all wrapped up, I caught up with one of the contestants who in my mind, had the best looking video I've seen out of every season so far! The production value was unbeatable. Corey Creed together with filmmaker Allan Hardy created their own Hollywood Stunt Driver version of a Real Moto video, with Corey Creed probably better in line to pick up an Oscars award, for his acting in this clip. It seemed like everything went wrong from the moment he was invited to create a clip, but the whole team created magic and we find out the good and bad parts of it all. Proving that you don't need to follow the same well beaten path to success that others take, Corey has come from left-field to be in the spotlight right now in the disciplines of Quarter Pipe and Best Whip. With his moto career trajectory shooting to the moon at the moment, it was great to find out exactly how Corey made his way from Stunt Performing in China to learning new driving skills at Movie World in Germany, transferring to Movie World in Australia and then picking up a bunch of Gold Medals at X Games and setting a World Record for Moto Quarter Pipe at Nitro World Games. Jen Hudak is an American freeski athlete specializing in halfpipe skiing. She is a 2-time world champion, 5-time X-Games medalist and 4-time national champion. In 2010, she won nearly every competition there was: X-Games, US Open, World Ski Invitational, Dew Tour, and US Nationals, to name a few. But one contest eluded her: The Olympics. She had a vision that halfpipe skiing would be an Olympic sport and served as a proud advocate for the sport over her 13-year professional ski career. With the help of Jen's efforts, halfpipe skiing made its Olympic debut during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. But as she pursued her quest to add "Olympian" to her highly successful list of career achievements, the unthinkable happened. Horrific injuries and in addition, one of her competitors dying. She had to rethink her goals. To make matters even harder and more devastating, her father passed away, losing in a 5 year battle with a rare form of leukemia. The world had turned upside down on Jen. Losing her father whom she had a close relationship with, dealing with the harsh reality of being a retired professional athlete, and feeling like she had lost her purpose was incredibly hard. What happened next? She dusted herself off and started making new choices, one after another. Here's a quote I like from her website: "My life is a constant work in progress. I still struggle with balancing masculine and feminine energy, overcommitment & burnout, fully accepting myself & all my shortcomings, learning to love my body as it is (not based on physical performance or aesthetic), saying "no" with love & grace, and engaging with conflict from a place of deep compassion & curiosity." Jen hasn't stopped there. She is a new mom to baby Hudson, is the co-host of the podcast, Balanced Pursuits and Co-Founder of the teardrop trailer company, Escapod Trailers. James Woods is an X Games gold medalist that hails from England. Let that sit in for a second.
