Last year, Babsi Zangerl did something no one has ever done before—she flashed a route on El Capitan. Thousands of feet of hard climbing with no falls. Her partner, Jacopo Larcher, came really close, taking just one fall during their ascent of Freerider.  Zangerl has been a climber for over two decades, since she was a teenager at a climbing gym in Austria. But what, and how, she climbs has evolved over that time—she spent her early years as a professional boulderer.  Zangerl first visited Yosemite fifteen years ago with her friend Hansjörg Auer. She was getting more serious about ropes after sustaining a serious back injury while bouldering. Since that first trip in 2010, Zangerl has returned with Larcher to free climb many of the valley's classic routes, including Zodiac, Magic Mushroom and the Nose. In 2018 the pair climbed the North Face of the Eiger. In 2022 they freed Eternal Flame on Pakistan's Nameless Tower, a trip Larcher wrote about in Alpinist 82. And their list of accomplishments just keeps growing.  In this episode, Zangerl talks about the beginnings of her climbing career in Austria, her partnership with Larcher, learning the ropes from Hansjörg Auer and much more.  This episode is brought to you with support from the American Alpine Club. In this interview, the 36-year-old Austrian climber describes her preparation, fears, and the intense effort of her no-falls ascent on the 5.13a wall route. Tommy's latest film is called The Devil's Climb, and it documents an epic adventure in which he and Alex Honnold rode their bike's to Alaska and enchained all the summits on the striking and infamous Devil's Thumb massif. The film was pitched as an environmental film, but the directors decided that global warming was less interesting than Tommy and Alex's bromance.  We catch up with one of the world's greatest climbers of all time and hear about making this film, and all the other things in life. But first, we open up the official record book of climbing, and discuss the recent news of Michaela Kirsh becoming the first woman to do a V15 and 5.15a, Babsi Zangerl's flash of Freerider, and other achievements.  For our final bit, we're pleased to share the heady music of longtime climber Dave Pomeranz's band, Whale Fall, with their track Chronophobia. Audiostretto 59/4/24 English

A free rider is someone who shares in the endeavours of others and tries to profit from them without doing anything in return. In other words, a kind of parasite. The image can therefore be used polyvalently or is used in this way in different contexts. It is an image of a vehicle on the road and someone standing on its running board and being transported from one place to another without any action on their part. If we are honest, we all are - we receive benefits and live off things to which we have contributed nothing. There is culture or social achievements that many generations before us have created with a lot of work and discipline and from which we benefit today. Others have invested themselves, we benefit. Perhaps a reason to reflect on this today with humility and gratitude for those who have achieved so much before us that we take for granted today. I wish you an extraordinary day!

Lani Chapko, a passionate climber from Seattle, Washington, has been drawn to outdoor activities from a young age, initially excelling in sprint kayaking. Her climbing journey began during college in Southern California, where friends encouraged her to take an outdoor adventure PE class despite her initial fear of heights. This class, which included both indoor climbing and outdoor trips, sparked a love for climbing that led her to explore canyoneering, backpacking, and multi-pitch trad climbing. ⁣ Starting with minimal formal training, Lani learned the ropes from more experienced friends, navigating early challenges and tricky situations through hands-on experience. Overcoming her fear of heights was a significant hurdle, but she has since learned to balance safety awareness with pushing her limits. Lani briefly experimented with free soloing but opted against it due to the risks involved. ⁣ Lani's climbing achievements include a free ascent of El Capitan's Freerider route. She is particularly impressed by climbers from previous decades who accomplished great feats with less advanced equipment. With a deep interest in climbing gear, influenced by her engineering background, Lani enjoys exploring different types of equipment and systems.

Today's episode features Buck Yedor, also known as “Big Wall Buck'' at The Spot Gyms in Colorado, where he oversees routesetting at the five Spot locations. True to his nickname in Colorado—and his Yosemite nickname “Bouldering Buck”—Yedor's proudest climbing accomplishments include a ground-up free ascent of Freerider on El Capitan and double-digit boulders. Before The Spot, he worked on the Yosemite search and rescue team and was the Head Routesetter of Northern California gyms at Touchstone Climbing. Yedor has set for a couple of National Cups, chiefed the Battle of the Bay, and most recently set for both a sport and bouldering North American Cup. In this episode, Yedor covers the ins and outs of managing a multi-gym routesetting program and the importance of strong leadership starting from the top down. He also discusses the nuances of setting grade and quality consistency among multiple gyms under the same brand, building an environment of consistent learning, considerations for hiring novice setters, encouraging setters to explore different perspectives, and the ever-evolving trends of the routesetting industry versus the wants and needs of the community. Written in Stone: Climbing’s Most Important Ascents

In 1998, Alex and Thomas Huber climbed the first ascent of Freerider on El Capitan in just over 15 hours. Their climb ushered in a new era of big wall free climbing, and there's no question it was a hugely important moment in climbing history.  But the way we credit it, most often simply to Alex Huber, ignores the rich history of the route.  The Huber's pioneered about 1/30th of the climbing. The vast majority of the route was established over many years by a who's who of Yosemite and free climbing history. Robbins, Frost, Pratt, Long, Bachar, Hudon, Jones, Glowacz, Skinner, Piana, Schneider, and MORE.  Put simply, Freerider is a linkup. A brilliant linkup, but a linkup nonetheless. And we just can't talk about it without going back. Way back. Back into time. Check out more here! When are MFNs good and when are they bad? A "most favored nation" (MFN) price requirement ensures that a buyer receives the lowest price that a seller is offering to other buyers. Under U.S. antitrust law, such MFNs are typically viewed as a procompetitive outcome of price bargaining between parties. But recently, the use of MFNs by Amazon's internet retailing platform has been challenged as an anticompetitive business practice. In this episode, Alicia Downey and Barry Nigro talk to economist Tasneem Chipty about the potential competition concerns raised by MFNs generally and platform MFNs specifically. This year he brought in Twitch and Maddo to have 2 teams and the riders list was unreal with some of the best Freerider's on the planet! Tyler Bereman Tom Parsons Vicki Golden Guillem Navas Josh Hill Kohl Denney Julien Vanstippen Patrick Evans Brian McCarty Christian Dresser And this time, they went into the teams with the Big Dawgs, Best Whip, Team Jam, Creative Line and Speed and Style! But let us know who you thought should have won each of the sections as we commentated it. You might completely disagree and I wouldn't be surprised! Elite climber James Lucas shares his struggles and breakthroughs in Training, Nutrition, Tactics, and Mental Game   -   As a climber, James is incredibly accomplished and well-rounded, with impressive big wall sends that include freeing El Cap's Freerider in a day along with loads of other big wall sends in the valley including the FA of Final Frontier, a Grade V 13b in the Valley. Decker McLean Jory grew up on the Front Range of Colorado near Golden. His family was steeped in the tradition of skiing and he grew up sliding on snow. Although he both alpine skied and snowboarded during his youth, he eventually would gravitate towards Telemark skiing. In the early 2000s he was sponsored by LINE skis as a Telemark skier, competing in big air and slopestyle competions. During this era he would start living an endless winter traveling between North America and New Zealand in the constant search for good snow and good times.  He eventually transitioned from being on the LINE team over to the KARHU team, since both companies were owned by the same parent company at the time. During his time with KARHU, he continued to compete as well as become more involved with other things like ski graphics. He helped design the graphics for the KARHU TEAM 100 ski as well as the KARHU Agent of the same vintage.  Following his Telemark ski career he became passionate about sushi and worked in that industry until landing in his current gig in aerospace.  Sign-up for the mailing list: https://bit.ly/FHLMailingList Connect with Josh and the Freeheel Life Family  Josh on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter  Telemark Skier Magazine on Instagram, Twitter and YouTube Freeheel Life on Instagram and Twitter Shop The Freeheel Life Telemark Shop How You Can Support Us: Shop Telemark at  FREEHEELLIFE.COM Subscribe & Become a Supporter of TelemarkSkier.com for articles, gear reviews, & more! Do employers even want their employees to develop wisdom? Barry Schwartz joins Igor and Charles to discuss how Aristotle's Practical Wisdom applies in the 21st Century, the reasons why we work, idea technology, the unintended consequences of rules-based systems, and the moral dangers and limits of incentives. Igor proposes the idea of algorithm-based wise machines, Barry suggests companies hire for character rather than skill, and Charles learns why, in wiser work places, the cost of free-riders may well be a price worth paying. The Soul of Enterprise: Business in the Knowledge Economy

We miss Free-Rider Friday's, so were it bringing it back, but just this once. We used to do this on the last Friday of every month. Most of our shows are “topic” driven, where we dive deep into one subject. Free-Rider Fridays were designed to be “event” driven, whatever issues are in the news that we (or you) find worthy of commentary. In economics, free riding means reaping the benefits from the actions of others and consequently refusing to bear the full costs of those actions. This means Ed and Ron will free ride off of the news, and each other, with no advanced knowledge of the events either will bring up. It's also a chance to clear out our stacks of stuff!

In this article, I borrow a concept from economics to make what I hope is a persuasive argument for why more of us should get involved in public affairs; why we should speak out, participate, and where the facility is available, register to vote. The task of achieving good governance has never been cheap or easy. It is costly and, as has the history of humankind has proven time without number, it can also be a hazardous exercise. But the prospects of achieving it are better when more people work together in strong networks of co-operation. The Edge of Fear: Rock Climbing Phenom Alex Honnold's Mom on the Free Solo Mindset

At the age of sixty-six, Dierdre Wolownick became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the iconic 3,200-foot granite "big wall" in Yosemite National Park.* For her this wasn't just any climb. Yes, The Captain is perhaps the most prized big wall climbs in the world. It was in June that same year that Dierdre's son Alex Honnold stunned and terrified the world by climbing without ropes—a free solo assent—this vertical wall that rises one half mile out of the earth in Yosemite National Park. Alex is no stranger to making news for his death-defying ability to speed climb routes, without protection, that give other expert climbers nightmares. Dierdre's son is indeed a rock climber in a special club: He's still alive. Says Honnold's friend and rock climbing legend Jimmy Caldwell, "All the other free solo climbers in the world are dead." Add this all together and you get the media sensation of Honnold, a paradox that his friends and family know couldn't be more opposite of his aloof and down-to-earth personality. National Geographic's blockbuster documentary of Honnold's assent of the Freerider route of El Captain, which won 7 Emmy's and an Academy Award for best Documentary Feature in 2019. I speak with Alex's mom, Dierdre, to deconstruct the public's polarized reaction to her son's lifestyle and to talk about her book The Sharp End of Life: A Mother's Story, about her journey as a parent who joined her son on his adventure, pushing the limit's of what's possible.  Should we see Honnold's climbing as reckless? A sophisticated dance with passive-aggressive self-harm? Or does our strong emotional reaction to his mastery and success in this solitary sport say more about our own denial of the risks we take every day flying in airplanes, living with firearms, or any number of questionable health and dietary choices we make. Do we envy Alex's clarity and focus and lack his courage to squarely face our own limitations and accept our own mortality? **The YouTube version of this episode, has some really cool footage of Alex climbing in the intro** Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SoulOfLifeShow or Twitter: https://twitter.com/SoulofLifeShow Want to book Keith as a guest on your podcast?
