This week on Diving In Deep, Sara is joined by rising country artist Mackenzie Carpenter! Mackenzie shares what it's like to not only be in a band with her family, but also with Sara's son Avery. They dive into all things music and songwriting, football, and Mackenzie's style. Mackenzie also shares what her path in music has looked like in the past couple of years and how she's gotten to collaborate with artists like Megan Moroney. Tune into this week's episode to hear more about Mackenzie Carpenter and why she loves cows so much!Listen to Unbroke: (https://ffm.to/seunbroke)About Mackenzie Carpenter:Hailing from the small town of Hull, GA, Mackenzie Carpenter is the spunky blonde girl-next-door who fell in love with music at first sight. She spent her childhood writing songs alongside her brothers and singing in church, and many years later, this outspoken star is breaking the mold for small-town women by sharing her truth. She kickstarted her career as a songwriter in 2021 and has since opened for talents like Miranda Lambert and Megan Moroney, putting her cheeky yet nuanced musical abilities on full display. After signing her first record deal with The Valory Music Co. in 2022, Mackenzie has been named to Spotify's Hot Country 2024 Artists To Watch, CMT's Next Women of Country class of 2023, and Nashville Briefing's Artists To Watch 2023, and she has been featured on countless other spotlight programs. Armed with the knowledge that everyone has a little bit of “hot mess” in them, no matter how shiny the book cover may seem, Carpenter embraces the crazy and tacky things that make life more interesting.LET'S BE SOCIAL:Follow Mackenzie Carpenter:Instagram – (@mackcarpmusic)Tiktok – (@mackcarpmusic)Twitter/X – (@mackcarpmusic)YouTube – (@MackenzieCarpenter)Facebook – (@mackcarpmusic)Website – mackenziecarpentermusic.comFollow Diving in Deep Podcast:Instagram –(@divingindeeppod)TikTok – (@divingindeeppod)Twitter – (@divingindeeppod)Facebook – (@divingindeeppod)Follow Sara Evans: Instagram – (@saraevansmusic)TikTok – (@saraevansmusic)Twitter – (@saraevansmusic)Facebook – (@saraevansmusic)Produced and Edited by: The Cast Collective (Nashville, TN)YouTube – ( @TheCastCollective )Instagram – (@TheCastCollective)Twitter – (@TheCastCollective)Directed by: Erin DuganEdited By: Sean Dugan, Corey Williams, & Michaela Dolphhttps://www.thecastcollective.com

Dat Boi Jizzal shares that his earliest memories of music was him listening to Flavor Flav and Public Enemy. Young Sauce shares that his earliest memories of music was his mom buying him a LL Cool J album. He shares that he loved that his mom bought him his first rap album because most mothers don't buy their kids rap music to begin with. Durell asks Dat Boi Jizzal what it was like to grow up on the westside of Atlanta. He shares that it was a pretty rough neighborhood and there was a lot of violence and he was glad that he was able to survive and have the opportunity to pursue music. Durell asks Young Sauce what it was like growing up in the Midwest. Young Sauce shared that music is what really saved him from staying out of trouble. Durell shares that music is so powerful and it really makes a difference in helping people through growing up through tough times. Durell shares that he didn't grow up in the streets or was disenfranchised but he did learn about what that was like through some of his childhood friends who came up through that. Young Sauce asks Durell about what it was like growing up in Orlando as an African American because he had heard stories about them being mistreated. Durell shares that he didn't see a lot of mistreatment because it really depended on the part of Orlando that you came up through. He shares that he grew up in a very middle class neighborhood.Durell and Dat Boi Jizzal talk about him being a part of a legendary hip-hop group called Dem Franchize Boyz. Durell asks how they all met and Jizzal shares that they all went to the same high school. He shares that when they all met he was the only one doing music at the time. Jizzal shared that they formed the group after they started recording in a home studio. After they formed the group they started getting some of their records playing in the city and that led to them recording and releasing their hit record “In My White Tee”. Durell asks Jizzal what it was like to be signed to a major record label. Jizzal shares that being signed to a major label was great, and they were signed to several labels throughout their run as a group. Jizzal shares that the exposure was great because of the access to people and resources. He shares that when the group signed with So So Def and Jermaine, it changed his life because he refers to Jermaine as a Berry Gordy type of guy. Durell and Jizzal talk about him starting his company Gutta Entertainment and that he was able to sell 10,000 units as an independent artist. He shares that at that time he was still doing some big tours such as “The Scream Tour” with artists like Bow Wow. Durell shares that when indie artists build and establish their brand they are then able to convert interested fans into supporters. Durell and Jizzal talk about the power of being able to be a global artist. He shares that one of the great things about being global is the opportunities that he still gets to be able to go and get money overseas. He shares that he doesn't take that for granted because there are artists that have had success in the past overseas but aren't able to still go back and touch all of the people that still love and appreciate them across the pond. Durell and Young Sauce talk about the work that he has been putting in as an independent artist. He dropped a mixtape called “Back To Basics”. In this episode, Fred interviews country music artists Hannah Ellis and Nick Wayne, who recently got engaged. Ellis, a Kentucky native, appeared on Rolling Stone's "Artists To Watch" list, while CMT named her one of their "Next Women of Country." The outgoing singer spoke with Fred after a show, and they talked palate preferences, bananas foster and tasting whiskey. Wayne, meanwhile, as a 2019 'Listen Up' Artist by CMT, while Rolling Stone Country touted Nick in late 2018 as its 'Artist You Need To Know.' The laid back Nick talks with Fred about the music business and his songwriting process, and of course, whiskey comes into play as well. Whiskeys tasted: Jack Daniel's Barrel Pick (8:18) Barrell Bourbon 1 (32:59) EPISODE SUMMARY Not only did Hannah go to school with one of Fred's former colleagues, Nick is a bourbon enthusiast who has a song series titled "Bourbon Neat." Here are a few of the topics Fred landed on with his dual guests: Hannah revealed her love of pizza and charcuterie - anything and everything savory - so Fred did his best to find bourbons to meet her palate halfway. She partook of a Jack Daniel's barrel pick, which satisfied her love of bananas foster and banana-flavored cocktails. I couple of drops of water helped smooth out the whiskey for her. Along the way, Fred points out that Jack Daniel's whiskey is actually a bourbon, but JD chooses to call it a Tennessee Whiskey for marketing purposes. They also get into the prevalence of marketing in a broad sense. As Fred notes, "Most of everything in this world is marketing, and most marketing is bullshit." Hannah also reveals that her first drink was a margarita, not whiskey, mostly because her dad was a margarita drinker on family vacations. Fred spoke with Nick about songwriting and why we don't hear the word "bourbon" in song often. They also talked about themes in country music, and the prevalence of trucks, tractors and the actual word "country" in today's current songs. Nick talks about his songs that were recorded by Keith Urban and Tim McGraw/Faith Hill. Once the whiskey starts flowing, Nick compares the BCS Bourbon 1 to Stagg Jr., "but without the burn." On the road, he typically drinks Buffalo Trace on the rocks. Nothing wrong with "budget bourbon." He also reveals that Wayne is his middle name and not his last name (his real last name is Richardson), and won't admit that he wishes his first name was Bruce. Who wouldn't want to be called "Bruce Wayne"? QUOTABLES Hannah, talking about her "breakup" with bourbon a few years ago, blamed it on a single session of overindulgence: "A bottle of Wild Turkey did me in." Perhaps the quote of the show came from Nick, however, came as he talked about sharing stories over whiskey: "Bourbon is a sharing spirit but also there's a spirit in it that you start sharing."
