I'm going to answer this question in two parts. The first part will be how to evaluate your worth when applying for jobs or pursuing a job promotion or raise. The second part will be evaluating your value as a person and what that looks like in your relationships. Professional Don't undervalue yourself. You are worth so much more than you think you are. Understand that the market plays a role (pay scale) Understand the company you want to work for (Glassdoor) Evaluate what you're making now in comparison to pay scale and Glassdoor The market is a good indicator of what to ask for but understand that companies don't pay everyone equally. Today, I'm super excited because I finally got Ms. Khadijah Sawyer on the show! I met Khadeja at work and we immediately hit it off because we started talking about money and financial plans and I haven't met many people in person who like to talk about money and the things they have learned about money so candidly. It's was very refreshing. I think one of the most exciting things about her is that she just recently bought a house and she's only 23 years old! When I first proposed having her on the show, I thought we would talk about just that! The fact that she has been able to buy a home this young and at a time where it seems like people our age are not anywhere near that goal. As we started talking, I realized that what's more interesting is the fact that she's in a place in her life where she has the opportunity to do something amazing and big like buy a house! You guys know I have such a terrible track record with making good financial decisions and over the past two years I have been slowly cleaning up my act. So we're going to talk about not only Khadijah's journey with finances, but my own. Most importantly, we're going to outline what getting your shit together really looks like. Stick around at the end of the episode for bonus pieces of wisdom and value I draw out of Khadijah and I's conversation. Also, Khadijah and I are not financial planners and we are not giving financial advice. We're just really into talking about money and finances! this is for entertainment purposes only and I hope it provides you with information and resources that could be helpful in your own journey. If you're listening to this podcast, I'm going to assume three things: 1) that you're creative, 2) you want to be happy and fulfilled in a career that challenges you AND 3) you strive for perfection in the things that challenge you. When it comes to perfectionism and procrastination, I want to talk about when our perfectionism gets in the way of doing the thing that we love. That's what the show is about. It's about doing the things that we love. But sometimes we get in our own way. 5 pretty simple ways to get yourself out of the, “all talk and no action idea” stage of perfectionism. Have a clear and nonnegotiable deadline. Pick a date. Stick to it. Pressure is good. Write it down. Pick up a pen. Write. Reflect. Talk to a friend. Ask a friend what they think. Be open. When all else fails, force yourself to start. Just do it. Keep your mind open to the idea that your idea is allowed to change.Sometimes your first idea is not as good as you think. Even good ideas can be bad. Stay tuned for “Creative Finances 101” starting next week, but today let's get back to the story. If you're good and passionate, but not making any money, you'll lack financial security. If you're passionate and making lots of money, you'll look a fool and I highly doubt you'll be able to maintain the facade or move far up the latter. Sometimes the struggle is mental illness, be that anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder. But sometimes, The Creative Struggle is restlessness. Those are my creative friends who are generally unhappy with where they are in their careers or relationships, my creative friends who are goal orientated and struggle to focus on the present because they are always looking ahead. My creative friend who takes on too much and over commits themselves, because over committing is easier than thinking you're not doing enough. Or my creative friend who lacks confidence in their work and so they creative less, therefore creating less things of actual value which feeds into their confidence issue.
