Most parenting advice creates broken adults. Society pressures us to raise "convenient" children, but this approach severely damages their emotional development and mental health. Children deserve to be emotional, needy, and sometimes chaotic as they navigate a confusing world with underdeveloped coping skills. When we force them to suppress these natural tendencies, we create adults who struggle with self-worth and emotional connection. In this video, I break down four destructive expectations society places on children and reveal how these create maladaptive behaviors. Whether you're a parent or healing from your own childhood wounds, this information will help you understand and overcome these damaging patterns. Many people daydream, and this is an entirely normal part of life. However, when daydreaming is taken to the extreme and creates psychological distress or impairs functioning, it can be considered maladaptive and may require intervention. Trauma causes many issues for survivors, whether the trauma was sustained in one event or many events over many years. Cult survivors exhibit symptoms of trauma ranging from PTSD and trust issues to guilt and shame. Some trauma symptoms develop because of the defense mechanisms our minds employ to save us from the trauma. The DSM-V-TR lists brainwashing and cult coercive persuasion as a dissociative disorder. As an expert on dissociation and hypnosis, I wanted to learn from Eli Somer, Ph.D., professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Haifa School of Social Work. Professor Somer's interests have led him to research trauma and its effects. One effect of trauma can be dissociation, a psychological process in which a person disconnects from their thoughts, feelings, memories, or sense of identity, often as a response to trauma or stress. Professor Somer coined the term maladaptive daydreaming, a dissociative disorder characterized by excessive, immersive daydreaming that disrupts daily functioning and serves as an escape from reality. There are many other fascinating topics we cover including use of psychedelics, false memories, and non use of hypnosis. Come join us! In the world of combat sports, optimizing performance extends beyond physical training and nutrition—sleep plays a critical role. Maladaptive sleep behaviors, such as inconsistent sleep schedules and inadequate sleep duration, can significantly impair an athlete's performance by reducing cognitive function, reaction time, and recovery ability. Understanding these impacts is crucial for athletes and coaches seeking to enhance performance through more effective sleep strategies. One of the key challenges combat sports athletes face is managing the effects of shift work and irregular event timings, which often conflict with typical training schedules. What are some strategies to mitigate these challenges, such as adjusting sleep schedules in advance? And what are the implications of jet lag for athletes traveling to major competitions? While technology offers valuable tools for tracking sleep, there are potential drawbacks, including reliance on inaccurate data or the psychological effects of constant monitoring. By educating athletes and coaches on best practices for sleep, they can make informed adjustments to training regimens, ultimately enhancing overall performance. In this episode, sleep scientist Dr. Ian Dunican discusses his work related to understanding and improving sleep behaviors in combat sports athletes. How have we ended up in a meaning crisis and what are the symptoms? Why is embodiment important to knowing? Why is an ecology of practices part of the solution? Today we have the growing issue of The Meaning Crisis to discuss, and the embodied practices that could offer a few solutions. This conversation is a part 2, following directly on from Episode #51, where John and I talked about Collective intelligence, and how the evolution of distributed cognition has led to homo-sapiens being such effective collaborators. It was so fascinating that we didn't have time to connect the sheer power of our collective intelligence, to today's discussion about what John has dubbed The Meaning Crisis. We come back to the importance of our propensity for self-transcendence, and the correspondent risk of self-delusion; how important a sense of the sacred is to our sense of meaning in life, to our mental health; then we zoom in on the importance of a range of embodied practices that John calls an ecology of practices, like Chi Gong, circling, flow states and meditation to re-discover lost forms of knowledge and embodied cognition that John thinks can bring us back from the brink of self delusion and self destruction. There is of course only one polymath who can speak about so many things and connect them all, like a ninja of the mind as one listener called him, the Cognitive scientist and philosopher John Vervaeke. Vervaeke is the director of the university of Toronto's Consciousness and Wisdom Studies Laboratory and its Cognitive Science program, where he teaches an Introduction to Cognitive Science and The Cognitive Science of Consciousness. Crying over Biebs? You're not alone. There Louise was. Standing in a cute little organic supermarket when it happened. Justin and Hailey Bieber announced that they were having a BABY! Her reaction? Silence and a weird smidge of… something? Had that feeling too? You're not alone. That's the story of how this episode was born. Pun intended! From dreaming of running into your favorite star on the street to feeling personally offended when they're criticized, the allure of celebrity culture can be downright intoxicating. But why do we feel this intense connection to people we've never even met? And how does it affect us on a deeper level? AND HOW CAN WE REALLY BE UPSET WHEN SOMEONE WE HAVE NEVER MET ANNOUNCES THEY ARE HAVING A BABY WITH A WOMAN WHO IS NOT YOU? In today's episode, Louise sits down to investigate the psychological and emotional aspects of celebrity worship and parasocial relationships. In this episode, Louise dives into: The slightly odd but hilarious reactions she and her friends had to the Beiber pregnancy announcement. The psychology behind celebrity worship and the three levels of parasocial relationships. Why the Selena v. Hailey/ Damon v. Stefan debates get us in a chokehold. Why criticism of our favorite fandoms and idols evokes visceral reactions (looking at you, Swifties). The delulu belief that we can "fix" or help celebrities like Justin Bieber. Maladaptive daydreaming and escapism associated with celebrity fascination. Themes of the sheer relentlessness of life, self-worth, and attachment styles. IHP content is for people who choose the human love narrative, not the human suffering narrative. Don't tune in if you don't love life and humanity because this won't be for you. Don't tune in if you still believe in evil or the devil. Topic not ideal for ego-sensitive or emotionally sensitive (on any/all life - including socio-pol-eco - topics) people. Please do not tune in. Thank you! All IHP content resonates with people who want to achieve enlightenment the human way. IHP podcast host Maria Florio shares voices, stories and perspectives from her 5D mystic enlightenment functional adult life to give examples of what it's like to know emotional self-regulation skills, experience secure attachment, have functional adult conversations and experience 5D relationships (5D and beyond vibing people). You hear about how easy it is to be yourself, to pursue inner growth, to unconditionally love, to have compassion, and live your best life with outer and inner-well being in the forefront. Also explored, how to communicate and handle emotionally insecure adaptive children grown ups, the 3D or 4D vibing individuals, those who stay within insecure emotional human suffering vibration experience and mindset, or who hold drama as the go-to in relationships, or use projection due to unresolved and unaddressed trauma, attachment wounds, and inner child wounds that come up in their behavior. Since trauma is relational and intimacy necessary to heal it, through Maria's stories and perspectives people get an idea of securely attached options on how to handle projection to the best of your ability and create a safe environment for another person to heal or for you to set a healthy boundary if the person bringing the projection (3D/4D drama vibe) is not seeking to move beyond their safety behavior/unresolved trauma emotional response. All of what we do in our day-to-day relationships, conversations, and interactions can bring the potential for healing and expansion of consciousness. This and more is what the IHP content and community is all about. Welcome and thanks for tuning in! Love, Maria ♾️

LIMERENCE HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS "an involuntary potentially inspiring state of adoration and attachment to a limerent object (LO) involving intrusive and obsessive thoughts, feelings and behaviors -- from euphoria to despair, contingent on perceived emotional reciprocation". While not inherently sexual, limerence is almost always romantic in nature. However, it's very possible to have adoration to the point of intrusive thoughts show up in an attachment to parental figures, or authorities, or friends. In this letter I respond to a woman experiencing limerence for a mother figure. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: ● [4:33] Episode 205: What is Health● [8:45] Episode 204: Diet Pills (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro) & The Real Shortcut● [14:36] Episode 211: Birth Control Part 1: FDA Approval & What Happened Next● [18:25] Episode 202: Is Perfectionism Hiding Your Pain?● [25:12] Episode 97: A Grocery Store Run with Your Health Coach● [29:55] Episode 201: Building a Balanced Plate● [32:38] Episode 221: Healthier Options at Starbucks● [35:41] Episode 199: LIIT Over HIIT● [37:20] Episode 225: Mailbag: Help for the Holidays● [40:14] Episode 217: Top 5 Tips for Digesting Nutrition News● [43:33] Nutrition Nugget: Music● [43:49] Nutrition Nugget: Laughter KEY TAKEAWAYS: ● [20:43] Not all perfectionism is destructive. Maladaptive perfectionism is what Dr. Margaret Rutherford talks about during Episode 202: Is Perfectionism Hiding Your Pain? It's important for us to just consider that and think through it to understand if we are struggling with destructive perfectionism. ● [28:02] Not a single food is off limits unless you decide you want it to be. Everything is just about figuring out how. It's not what you eat, it's how you eat.● [36:17] If you do LIIT, low intensity interval training, vs. HIIT, high intensity interval training, and can be consistent with it, you are better off maintaining that consistency, so you can get the daily habits that create health, vitality, and longevity. QUOTES: “Western medicine functions on the treatment of symptoms versus what's the underlying cause of the issue. So that's how a lot of people end up in the snowball of prescriptions because it's like this one's for the first symptom and then this is for the side effects.” - Jenn Trepeck “A friend's husband said to me, wait a minute, I thought we were supposed to put our daughters on birth control as soon as they got their period. So it's another thing to wait, stop, we have to take this back. We have to be our own health advocate and do our own knowledge search, get our own education.” - Jenn Trepeck “It almost goes back to that perfectionism thing. If you use a food scale at home and then you go eat out and you're anxious, that anxiety over the portion size is worse than whatever the portion size is, you know? So the objective is to make it work and figure it out, not to let all of this stuff completely consume your life.” - Jenn Trepeck“What feels really personal and specific, is often incredibly universal." - Jenn Trepeck"Everything we've talked about is about changing your life without disrupting it, without losing your life." - Jenn Trepeck RESOURCES:Episode 189: Should Chat GPT or AI Be Your Health Coach? In the Name of the Pill by Mike Gaskins Resolution RevolutionBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram

In this episode of the Awareness to Action Enneagram podcast, Mario Sikora, María José Munita and Seth "Creek" Creekmore continue their discussion on topics they don't teach and talk about the Enneagram's three Centers. They explain why they feel there are easier and more modern ways to talk about human nature and how this could also lead to mistyping.“To reiterate, just because we don't teach something, doesn't mean that it's quote-unquote wrong. It's about the degree of utility that it brings corresponding to the degree of complexity that it adds. Does it answer more questions than it raises? And for me, the Centers, as they're taught generally, raise more questions upon pressure than they answer.” -Mario [04:31]“It's just a contortion in that it only feels good when you're talking to Enneagram enthusiasts. And if you try to explain that to reasonable people who are not familiar with the Enneagram, it looks like a crazy idea.” -María José [11:13]“I think the thing we can all agree on is there's both maladaptive and adaptive ways to think, act and feel.” -Creek [24:39]TIMESTAMPS[00:01] Intro[01:30] What Creek likes about the Centers[05:06] Centers and the Enneagram[10:29] Centers can cause mistyping[14:58] Can it be helpful?[23:27] Maladaptive and adaptive ways[25:05] The wisdom is still there[32:31] OutroConnect with us:Awareness to ActionEnneagram on DemandIG: @ataenneagrampodMario Sikora: IG: @mariosikoraTikTok: @mariosikoraWeb: mariosikora.comPod: Enneagram in a MovieMaria Jose Munita: IG: @mjmunitaWeb: mjmunita.comSeth "Creek" Creekmore: IG: @_creekmorePod: Fathoms | An Enneagram PodcastPod: Delusional Optimism

Correcting Maladaptive Relationship Patterns
Could your perfectionism actually be a sign of depression?Today, Jenn is talking with Dr. Margaret Rutherford, a clinical psychologist with thirty years of experience, who is also an author, TedX speaker, and podcast host. Dr. Rutherford discusses the two types of perfectionism, and how one version of it is maladaptive and is actually harming us. She describes what socially determined perfectionism is, and gives some helpful tips about identifying it and tools to work through challenging the behaviors. Tune in to find out if perfectionism might actually be hiding your pain. This episode may contain topics that are triggering such as abuse and suicide. IN THIS EPISODE:● [6:10] Was Dr. Margaret Rutherford always interested in the psychology space?● [7:50] Did Dr. Margaret Rutherford struggle with eating in her younger years?● [11:00] How did she come to find the overlap of perfectionism and depression? ● [14:46] Where is the line between a coping or survival strategy vs. behaviors that are maladaptive and hurt us?● [20:34] What is socially determined perfectionism?● [26:44] If we don't identify with this conversation, how can we support others who may? ● [30:39] How do vulnerabilities translate into flaws?● [31:46] How do we help people walk through healing? What are Dr. Margaret Rutherford's 5 stages of healing?● [37:37] How do you start to challenge your behaviors?● [38:55] How does Dr. Rutherford help patients find true self compassion?● [41:03] Why is “breaking the silence” so important?KEY TAKEAWAYS:● How we hide perfectionism depression: we don't allow the experience of negative emotions. It's almost like dissociating, like it's there, but we don't feel it. There is also the fear of being exposed. The shame invades our self worth. Vulnerability translates into flaws. ● Even if you have moved past or healed past toxic behaviors, it is still possible to struggle with toxic thinking. For example, if you've struggled with an eating disorder in the past but no longer have those behaviors, you may still struggle with the thoughts that come with eating disordered thinking. ● Many times, the effort to control the uncontrollable often shows up in our food as perfectionism. ● Not all perfectionism is destructive, but destructive or maladaptive perfectionism is. Maladaptive perfectionism can lead to increased risk of suicidality and it can be easy to hide. QUOTES: “But the trauma timeline is very helpful for people because it actually asks you to go back to certain times in your life when you were very young, to when you're a teenager, to when you're in your twenties or thirties, and talk about the things or acknowledge the things that were helpful to you, that really helped you feel good about yourself and the things that did not, the things that began to make you feel unsafe or unlovable. And you wanna go back with compassion. It's not about blaming people.” - Dr. Margaret Rutherford“But where you get hope is when you see yourself change. When you allow yourself to express an emotion you've never allowed yourself to express. When you do something or you don't do something you always do, that you can begin to say I am making choices in the moment.” - Dr. Margaret Rutherford“It just begins opening. It begins giving you freedom. Self-compassion is important, but so is the sense of self-acceptance. And my working definition of self-acceptance is that neither your strengths nor your vulnerabilities completely define you. They both exist, but they don't. Neither one of them completely define who you are.” - Dr. Margaret Rutherford"Looking closer at your own perfectionism and understanding yourself might be a critical piece for your mental and physical health." - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES: Dr. Margaret Rutherford WebsitePerfectly Hidden Depression BookThe Self Work PodcastJenn as a Guest on Dr. Rutherford's Podcast: 340 SelfWork: What You Need to Know About the Merry-Go-Round of Dieting: A Conversation with Jenn TrepeckDr. Margaret Rutherford's InstagramGUEST BIO:Margaret Robinson Rutherford Ph.D., a clinical psychologist with thirty years of experience, is also an author, TedX speaker, and podcast host. Sharing who you really are with those you trust is a huge step toward connection and good mental health. Rates of depression and suicide are skyrocketing. And there's something we can do!She's further challenging the mental health profession to question their overreliance on the official symptom checklist for diagnosis. Instead, we need to create normalcy around suicidal feelings, listen to each person's actual experience of their life, and respond with safety and compassion, rather than stigmatizing this very real and excruciatingly painful part of human existence

Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. We've collectively decided on what perfect looks like and attributed perfectionism with the ideal person. What if we told you that perfectionism is actually a protective measure used to prevent oneself from feelings of rejection, abandonment, and worthlessness? These words don't quite scream “perfect” do they? Trauma Rewired hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have touched upon this trauma response before, but today's episode is a deep dive into how it can develop and lead to harmful avoidance behaviors. They deconstruct perfectionism, including defining the three types of perfectionism and how it interplays with CPTSD elements like the inner critic. You'll learn the many health consequences that the chronic stress of perfectionism can cause, and how to distinguish excellence from perfectionism. Jennifer and Elisabeth also share their experience with perfectionism, and how it can push us into burnout or freeze states. Perfectionism is not an attainable goal, which makes it debilitating and a hindrance to healing trauma. To take the first step towards moving out of perfectionism, tune in! Topics discussed in this episode: Defining the 3 types of perfectionism Perfectionism as a trauma response Jennifer's example of setting yourself up for failure The effects of perfectionism on our health Maladaptive coping mechanisms for perfectionism How to recognize perfectionist behaviors and thinking Jennifer on taking action against her perfectionism Trauma healing, neurosomatic intelligence, and integration Limiting beliefs push the loop of perfectionism Elisabeth on the importance on self-regulation tools in her life How perfectionism negatively affects organizations and employees Steps Elisabeth has taken to heal her perfectionism and workaholism Claim your two FREE weeks on Brain Based Wellness Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. In this episode we discuss the parable of the wineskins (and the patched garment) from Matthew 9, Mark 2, and Luke 5. Contrary to the popular interpretation of a radical redefinition and subversion of Jewish apocalyptic eschatology, this parable communicates the simple principle of dysfunctionality or maladaptation. You cannot force Jesus' disciples to fast while the Messiah is with them. It does not work. But when he is “taken away” (cf. Isa 53:8 LXX), they will fast. Through this parable, Jesus (and the Gospel authors) sought to establish the discipline of fasting in the early church. Show notes Fasting and Jewish apocalypticism - Matthew 9:14-15; Isaiah 53:7-8 LXX (4:03) The common supersessionist approach - Origen, Blomberg, and Wright (10:09) The purpose of the parable: dysfunctionality and maladaptation - Joshua 9:12-13 (24:18) Other parables that simply teach a principle - Luke 10:27, 29; Luke 12:15; Luke 11:8 (29:48) How should we understand this parable if there is no radical redefinition of Jewish eschatology?
