Producer's Note: please forgive the echo in this episode. We recorded by candle light in an ancient cathedral in the mountains.Join Dave and Tom as they slip into some leather chaps, pick out their favorite colored hanky and take a sweaty (and judgy) tour of some gay themed horror movies! First off is an incestuous little film about a boy, his deranged mother and lots of milk! Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) aka Night Warning. Starring Susan Tyrrell, Jimmy McNichol, Bo Svenson and an early appearance from Bill Paxton! Next up is a sneaky little release from Vinegar Syndrome called Hanging Heart (1989) which has gay themes ✅ camp appeal ✅ and loads of head scratching ✅.Finally it's a detour to the meat packing district with the legendary Cruising by Exorcist director (not Exorcist 3!) William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino as the very scared looking undercover cop / real actor who doesn't quite know which movie he signed up for. This is the roughest of all trades, folks! Enjoy!
“Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker.” That's a terrible title. But is “Exposition” a derogatory term? That is the question. Along with: Where the HELL has this podcast been for the past four months? Cult, obscure horror/mystery film from the 80's starring Susan Tyrell (Crybaby) Bo Svenson and a very young Bill Paxton tells the tale of an overprotective aunt and coming of age nephew whose future doesn't look to promising because he didn't wear his shades and the aunt holds some pretty horrific secrets. The real nightmare is the subject matter of enmeshed emotional incest aka toxic boy mom/aunt which I totally despise and my real feelings on parents' holding their children hostage into adulthood with dysfunctional relationships. You feel so badly for Billy because he is the true victim. I was mad as hell at Aunt Cheryl and Detective Carlson, woooo got my blood pressure up. Happy first episode recorded in 2023! We'd love to tell you we're coming in all “new year, new us”, but f*ck that… that's not why you're here. You're not here to listen to us grow and change and all that nonsense. No way. How about “New year, worse us” (thanks, Lucas). Look, all I'm trying to say is that we hadn't recorded in a while and we had a lot of movies to catch up on and also tonight's movie, um… didn't bear us the longest fruit. So tune in for some wild and erratic opinions on things that mostly have to do with horror and stick around for a little puppet-y after party! Bonus points for clocking just how long Cody goes without realizing him we're trying to get him to transition into tonight's film. Oh boy. One of the absolute strangest movies of the early-80s, featuring a bravado performance by the wonderful Susan Tyrrell as THE WORST PRIMARY CAREGIVER EVER and shockingly progressive, LGBT+ themes, Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker is a one-of-a-kind fever dream of a film, exactly the kind of thing that Madeline Koestner likes to subject me to, and I'm better for it. This week, join us as we discuss one of the best-acted horror films of the '80s - 1981's Night Warning. Poor Billy is caught between his crazy aunt Cheryl (the incredible Susan Tyrell), his gay basketball coach, and the homophobic sheriff who thinks Billy is guilty of murder (the incredible Bo Svenson). They all add up to a classic piece of southern gothic horror, a fine melodrama, and one of the earliest slashers. On this episode: a logging truck beheading, incest vibes, defining hag horror, secret promise rings, basketball sabotage, attic remodels, implied necrophilia, axe chases, meat tenderizer battery, copious milk-drinking, and ill-advised text epilogues.
The world needs more masc Mary Sues in film and Kyle is on a mission to bring this very specific trope into the public eye with his pick of the insane BUTCHER BAKER NIGHTMARE MAKER (1981).
