We're going back to 1987 to read "Kraven's Last Hunt" by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck, which collects issues from The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man. This is a classic capes and tights story about how some men will fight a decade-long battle to best Spider-Man in hand-to-hand combat rather than go to therapy. Several content warnings apply to this journey through Peter Parker's emo phase, but you don't need to be steeped in nostalgia to appreciate the trip. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on "Banned Book Club" by Kim Hyun Sook, Ko Hyung-Ju, and Ryan Estrada.

DeMatteis and Mike Zeck. Originally published across The Amazing Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, and Web of Spider-Man in 1987, this dark, introspective arc sees Kraven the Hunter bury Spider-Man alive, assume his identity, and face off against the terrifying sewer-dweller Vermin. We look at the story's gothic almost Russian literature-esque tone, its place in the evolution of superhero comics, and its heavy literary and psychological themes—including a breakdown of its Freudian structure, Blakean symbolism, and bleak commentary on identity and mortality. Plus, we revisit how this tale reshaped Kraven as a complex villain—and how its impact still echoes today.Find out as we awkwardly stumble through one of Marvel's most unforgettable arcs—with all the chaotic podcast energy of our earliest recordings.Topics include:Fearful symmetry and William Blake's “The Tyger”The evolution of Kraven the Hunter1980s New York and its influence on comic storytellingThe black suit and its darker legacyInner monologues galoreCheek touching, grave digging, and sewer monsters00:00 Introduction and Overview03:56 Correcting the Record: Spider-Man Series Clarification04:22 The Unique Structure of Kraven's Last Hunt06:56 Reading Experience and Graphic Novel Format08:03 1980s Vibes and Comparisons to Batman11:46 Freudian Psychology in Spider-Man15:29 The Shocking Suicide in Comics16:36 Kraven's Return and Downgrade22:30 Kraven's Last Hunt: Themes and InspirationsApril's Comic Book Club Pick: Eight Billion Genies by Charles Soule and Ryan Browne!Join the Discord and read alongJoin the SubstackFollow us on InstagramFollow us on TiktokWatch us on Youtube Hosted on Acast. D and D can help with environmental education by creating immersive, story-driven learning experiences that engage students on a deeper level. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Andrew Thaler, who's using Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) to teach environmental concepts in a way that feels more like play than a lesson. Through world-building, role-playing, and strategic storytelling, students aren't just learning—they're adventuring through ecosystems, facing climate-related challenges, and discovering how natural systems work in real time. Environmental education is often limited to textbooks and lectures, but D&D turns abstract concepts into living, breathing quests. Whether it's battling pollution monsters or restoring magical coral reefs, players develop a better understanding of ecological relationships and environmental issues while having fun. If you're a teacher, game master, or environmental advocate, this episode will show you how fantasy and education can combine to create a lasting impact in and out of the classroom. A repeat of part 1 of my interview with legendary author J.M. DeMatteis, starting at the beginning and going through to the genre-defining “Kraven's Last Hunt."
Our panellists are back with volumes 3 and 4 of "Our Dreams at Dusk" by Yuhki Kamatani. This time we get to talk about all the characters in depth, including matters of life, death, marriage, and friendship. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on The Amazing Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck.

Still bummed that Kraven the Hunter's solo film career failed to launch? We ease the pain with a look at the celebrated 1987 storyline by J.M. DeMatties and Mike Zeck that made the character's reputation in the first place. “Fearful Symmetry” (later known as “Kraven's Last Hunt”) is an unusually dark and generally atypical adventure for Aunt May's favorite nephew, but it speaks to the central appeal of the hero and remains one of the most celebrated Spider-Man stories of all time. We'll look at the genesis of this story as a Wonder Man pitch, DeMatties' love of Russian literature and interest in making Peter Parker's recent marriage add some emotional heft to the proceedings, and Zeck's moody and cinematic storytelling. Plus, don't miss the podcast's first (and probably last) edition of “Poetry Corner”! Support the podcast at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

This week on End Credits, we're hunting for content. In this last regular edition of the show for 2024, we're going to put on our favourite animal skins and run wild on what might be the biggest bomb of the year, and that's really saying something. We're reviewing Kraven The Hunter, and we're also going to look ahead to greener cinematic pastures in 2025! This Wednesday, December 18, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Peter Salmon will discuss: The Best of 2025? So 2024 isn't even over yet, and we're already talking about the Best of 2025?! Not quite. There will be a whole year of movies in the next 12 months, and we probably won't be able to see them all, so we're going to get some of the organising done early by talking about some of the movies we're looking forward to seeing in the next 12 months. From a return to a zombie apocalypse, to what may be the last Mission, we'll check in with 2025! REVIEW: Kraven The Hunter (2024). It's been a dry year for superhero movies, but there's one last stop at the oasis before we get to a veritable super-buffet in 2025. Have you heard of Kraven? He's a Spider-Man villain who's perhaps most famous for a storyline literally called "Kraven's Last Hunt", but someone at Sony Pictures thought he sounded like a pretty cool guy worthy of his own movie. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who's already gotten a taste of superhero life, got his body in fighting shape, but is this movie worth hunting for at the holiday box office season? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Two comics enter and two comics were discussed as usual. We don't have the ability to dispose of a comic and Jav would never want to and Charles would at least feel guilty. Acclaimed comics writer J.M. DeMatteis (Justice League International, Kraven's Last Hunt, Moonshadow) is back to promote his new Kickstarter for the second issues of his DeMultiverse. The DeMultiverse is JM's independently produced comics, which include four titles: Layla in the Lands of After, art by Shawn McManus Anyman, art by David Baldeón Godsend, art by Scott Koblish Wisdom, art by Tom Mandrake Plus as a bonus an earlier project that had not been released: The Edward Gloom Mysteries, art by Vassilis Gogtzilas To donate to the Kickstarter and help issue 2 of these series come out, go here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spellboundcomics/jm-dematteis-presents-the-demultiverse-phase-2-edward-gloom?ref=ksr_email_backer_backer_confirmation We go deep on each series to talk about his influences for each one. We get into the art styles of the many talented artists co-creating these stories. We talk about the promotion necessary to keep a Kickstarter going! We ask how JM stays so positive in an industry known to sometimes burn people out. We talk about letting the unconscious mind have time and space to generate ideas. We also sneak in a few quick questions about his past Marvel/DC titles too. JM is one of our favorite creators and people. 40+ years in the business and he's still as enthusiastic to discuss it as someone writing their first book. He's curious about new work and inspired by what came before. We love that he's co-producing his own books and hope you consider helping out! ----------------- Subscribe at screwitpodcasts.com to get our monthly bonus episodes.
