I am very excited about this episode, author Johnny Compton joins me to talk about his Sophomore novel Devil Kills Devils from Tor Nightfire. I enjoyed coming into this novel cold, not knowing anything about the plot, but it is a supernatural horror novel that knocked my socks off. We talk about Compton's influences, his background, and how he got into writing and start with a non-spoiler conversation about Devils Kill Devils. After a spoiler warning, we get full under the hood with this powerful novel. Plus we geek out about McCammon's Swan Song. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

PREORDER REST STOPNat Cassidy was kind enough to join me once more on the podcast to talk about his upcoming novella, out on Shortwave, called REST STOP (preorder link above the cover image). While REST STOP is a quick read, and pretty chock-full of violence and creepy crawlies, we managed to get pretty deep into a conversation about generational trauma and survival - themes that are present throughout this depraved story. We also talked about Nat's upcoming novel from Tor Nightfire, WHEN THE WOLF COMES HOME, out on April 22nd of 2025, and a little bit about Nat's two chapbooks that he also released through Shortwave, which you should absolutely go buy immediately. Coming soon on the podcast: Keith Rosson returns to talk about the closing title in his FEVER HOUSE duology - THE DEVIL BY NAME. Later, I'll be talking to Tim Waggoner about his novelization of Ti West's X trilogy, of which I've read X and it's fan-fucking-tastic.For folks that prefer YouTube: This is a public episode. Today I talked to Gretchen Felker-Martin about Cuckoo (Tor Nightfire, 2024). From Gretchen Felker-Martin, the acclaimed author of Manhunt, comes a vicious new novel about a group of teens who must stay true to themselves while in a conversion camp from hell. Something evil is buried deep in the desert. It wants your body. It wears your skin. In the summer of 1995, seven queer kids abandoned by their parents at a remote conversion camp came face to face with it. They survived--but at Camp Resolution, everybody leaves a different person. Sixteen years later, only the scarred and broken survivors of that terrible summer can put an end to the horror before it's too late. The fate of the world depends on it. Jake and Ron are honored and thrilled to have author Catriona Ward on the podcast! Her latest novel is Looking Glass Sound published by Tor Nightfire.https://tornightfire.com/catalog/looking-glass-sound-catriona-ward/https://us.macmillan.com/author/catrionawardI recently caught Catriona Ward at the Brookline Booksmith in Massachusetts, where she sat on a panel with former Wrath of the iOtians guest Christopher Golden and the inimitable Gretchen Felker-Martin, author of Manhunt. And it's obvious that Catriona's fan base is large and adoring, and rightly so. She has a generosity of spirit that's immediately palpable. Look no further than her willingness to talk with us in the midst of an exhausting cross country book tour. Catriona's work is influenced by her globetrotting youth. She was born in Washington, D. C., but grew up, well, all over, with stops in Kenya, Madagascar, Yemen, England, and Morocco. Catriona earned her undergraduate degree in English Literature at Oxford, and a Master's in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. In 2015, she brought her experience, education, and energy to bear on Rawblood. Published as The Girl from Rawblood in the U. S. in 2016, the book signaled the arrival of a major new talent in horror fiction and won an August Derleth Award at the British Fantasy Awards to boot. Catriona followed up in 2019 with Little Eve, which also won a Derleth and a Shirley Jackson Award. In 2022, Catriona blew readers, critics, and no less an authority than Stephen King himself away with The Last House on Needless Street, a mind bender of a novel that I hope every iOtian listener has already enjoyed. The book won an amazing third Derleth Award for Catriona. And was also shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award, the British Book Award, and a Red Tentacle Kitschie, which, for those not in the know, is a juried prize awarded for elevating the tone of genre literature. 2023 brought us Sundial, which was nominated for the Bram Stoker and Locus Awards. Of its author, Danielle Trussoni of the New York Times remarked, “Ward is willing to go places so dark, so dismal, that it borders on sadism.” In our line of work, that's high praise. Elevated horror indeed. Catriona combines elements of the psychological thriller, the gothic, and a hallucinatory high strangeness to create a voice that is uniquely hers. No one else could have written Looking Glass Sound, her other 2023 release with Tor Nightfire. Which I might add continues to publish the best of the best of contemporary horror. Catriona spoke with us about this book from a hotel room in the Twilight Zone, en route to her next speaking gig. Philip Fracassi is a novelist and screenwriter most known for his hard-hitting traditional horror fiction but is branching out into Science Fiction and historical novels. He is the author of the award-winning story collections, Beneath a Pale Sky and Behold the Void. His novels include Don't Let Them Get You Down (Zagava Press), A Child Alone with Strangers (Talos Press), Gothic (Cemetery Dance), and Tor/Nightfire re-issued his debut novel Boys in the Valley. Boys in the Valley is Fracassi's first international release, and it has been received with wide acclaim, including being in my top ten novels of the year. This is a highly technical conversation under the hood of this gothic historical horror novel. Philip Fracassi is a writer's writer. We get into serious details of the research, construction, and execution of this horror novel. There are about thirty minutes of non-spoiler discussion and then we go deep. We also chat about future books, my favorite of his short stories, and book touring.
Caitlin Starling returns to Fictitious to talk about her new horror-tinged, sci-fi thriller, LAST TO LEAVE THE ROOM. We talk writing surreal scenes, and using a "load-bearing cat". About Last to Leave the Room The city of San Siroco is sinking. The basement of Dr. Tamsin Rivers, the arrogant, selfish head of the research team assigned to find the source of the subsidence, is sinking faster. As Tamsin grows obsessed with the distorting dimensions of the room at the bottom of the stairs, she finds a door that didn't exist before – and one night, it opens to reveal an exact physical copy of her. This doppelgänger is sweet and biddable where Tamsin is calculating and cruel. It appears fully, terribly human, passing every test Tamsin can devise. But the longer the double exists, the more Tamsin begins to forget pieces of her life, to lose track of time, to grow terrified of the outside world. As her employer grows increasingly suspicious, Tamsin must try to hold herself together long enough to figure out what her double wants from her, and just where the mysterious door leads… LAST TO LEAVE THE ROOM is potent and surreal, horror-inflected science fiction available now from St. Martin's Press: Amazon » Bookshop » » Some of these are affiliate links. Mary discovers that these experiences are echoes of aninfamous serial killer. Then the killings begin again.Mary's definitely going to find herself.Ann reported on the book Holly by Stephen King (Scribner 9/5/23). It really isn't a horror novel but itdoes have a very spooky vibe.Stephen King's Holly marks the triumphant return of beloved King character Holly Gibney. Readers havewitnessed Holly's gradual transformation from a shy (but also brave and ethical) recluse in Mr. Mercedes toBill Hodges's partner in Finders Keepers to a full-fledged, smart, and occasionally tough private detectivein The Outsider. In King's new novel, Holly is on her own, and up against a pair of unimaginably depraved andbrilliantly disguised adversaries. When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter,Holly is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has justdied. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny Dahl's desperate voice makes it impossiblefor Holly to turn her down.Mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are thepicture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelongacademics. But they are harboring an unholy secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-lined home, onethat may be related to Bonnie's disappearance. And it will prove nearly impossible to discover what they areup to: they are savvy, they are patient, and they are ruthless.Holly must summon all her formidable talents to outthink and outmaneuver the shockingly twisted professorsin this chilling new masterwork from Stephen King. Her second book is much more or a horror novel. She reported on the book Knock, Knock, Open Wide byNeil Sharpson. She takes the corpse to a remote farmhouse. So begins a night of unspeakable horror that willtake her to the very brink of sanity. She will never speak of it again. Two decades later, Betty Fitzpatrick, newly arrived at college in Dublin, has already fallen in love with thedrama society, and the beautiful but troubled Ashling Mallen. As their relationship blossoms, Ashling goes togreat lengths to keep Betty away from her family, especially her alcoholic mother, Etain. As their relationship blossoms, Betty learns her lover's terrifying family history, and Ashling's secret obsession.Ashling has become convinced that the horrors inflicted on her family are connected to a seemingly innocentchildren's TV show. Everyone in Ireland watched this show in their youth, but Ash soon discovers that no oneremembers it quite the same way. And only Ashling seems to remember its star: a small black goat puppetwho lives in a box and only comes out if you don't behave. If you thought The Last House on Needless Street was tricksy, just wait until you hear about Looking Glass Sound. This is Cat's ode to the Maine of Stephen King, the enigmatic narrators of Shirley Jackson and… well, a host of other comparisons that I foist upon her in the next hour.Above all that though – the book is so typically, inimitably Catriona Ward. It's a destined Gothic classic that takes the genre, crumples it into a ball before rewriting the whole thing. We cover the purpose of metafiction in horror, how writing a book is like falling in love, the eeriness of the Maine coast and her fascination with the Neverland Ranch. If that isn't enough Cat also tells us a ghost story that happened to her just the night before.Tricksy, very tricksy…as Gollum would say.EnjoyLooking Glass Sound was published April 20th by Viper Books in the UK and 22nd August by Tor Nightfire in the US.Other books mentioned in this episode include: Lunar Park (2005), by Bret Easton EllisThe Rules of Attraction (1987), by Bret Easton EllisThe Secret History (1992), by Donna TarttMy Other Life (1996) by Paul TherouxAny Human Heart (2002), by William BoydThe Haunting of Hill House (1959), by Shirley JacksonDeath of a Bookseller (2023), by Alice SlaterMrs March (2021), by Virgina Feito Support Talking Scared on PatreonCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show
I had a wonderful time chatting with Leopoldo Gout! Leopoldo has written several books, including Ghost Radio. Check out the audiobook. It's actually narrated by Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us and The Mandalorian! His latest horror novel, Piñata, published by Tor Nightfire and is now avaialable on audiobook, e-book, hardcover and paperback. It's the tale of a young family that went to Mexico to connect to their culture, history and roots. Upon their return to New York, they discover that something unexplainable and possibly sinister has followed them back.Leopoldo is also an accomplished artist and sculptor creating wonderful works out of his studio in New York.He loves music. He's friends with David Byrne, produced music videos and created album covers for Mos Def. He's friends with Carlos Santana and was the executive producer for an acclaimed documentary about him.He is also accomplished in film and television. He was the executive producer for Molly's Game starring Jessica Chastain. He's the executive producer of the current top streaming show on Netflix, the critically acclaimed The Chosen One. By the way, his brother, Everado Gout, is an accomplished director in his own right. He directed episodes of Luke Cage, The Terror and Snowpiercer. He also directed Kaleidoscope and the aforementioned The Chosen One, both on Netflix. He even directed the movie The Forever Purge. With all of Leopoldo's accomplishments the four things that made the biggest impression on me are his love for creativity, his natural curiosity about others, his love of his family and his generosity. He's so generous he chatted with me while he was on vacation!Leopoldo Gouthttps://www.leopoldogout.com/Piñata by Leopoldo Gouthttps://tornightfire.com/catalog/pinata-leopoldo-gout/It was supposed to be the perfect summer.Carmen Sanchez is back in Mexico, supervising the renovation of an ancient abbey. The disaster costs Carmen her job, cutting the family trip short. But something malevolent and unexplainable follows them home to New York, stalking the Sanchez family and heralding a coming catastrophe. This week we're joined by the man, the myth, the mystery that is Chuck Tingle. Who knows the truth of this enigmatic figure? What visage lies beneath the pink bag that forever encases his face? Does he really have a PhD in massage? Puzzles abound…The one thing that's certain is the brilliance of his new novel. Camp Damascus is a full-bloodied horror novel set in that most hideous of environs: a religious community and a gay conversion camp. Sounds triggering. It may well be … but Chuck has also invested this story with such hope and joy and yes, LOVE, that it more than salves all the human horror and demonic jump scares. We cover tons in this episode – the stoic seriousness of fictional sex, the maligned trinity of genres, rattling the religious right, the simple trick to writing effective jumpscares and the final, full declaration of why love is real. I like my ghosts like I like my podcasts – weird and slightly furious. Thankfully, this week delivers on both counts – with Johnny Compton's The Spite House delivering more ghosts than you think you could fit into 250-pages … and none of them are anything less than fuming! Johnny talks us through the odd, off-kilter history of spite houses, we trace the legacy of the American haunted house novel, discuss ghost lore and dismiss orbs. We talk about complex father figures and I have my smuggest ever moment of being accidentally right about something. It's a blast. This week is an orgy of horror. There are four of us. That makes it an orgy right? (I've never been to one – never got the invitation).Ahem … sorry. I'll start again. This week I am joined by not one, but THREE guests. John F. D. Taff, Livia Llewellyn, and of course, Josh Malerman. We could call them stars from the firmament of horror. Dark Stars perhaps. That would be fitting, considering that's what they are here to discuss (amongst many, many things). Dark Stars is a benchmark spook fest. An anthology of fiction that attempts to set the tone for where we are in our collective horror moment. John is the editor, Josh and Livia are contributors – amongst nine other names from the very forefront of the genre. Each story is different, with few tropes, little tradition and zero constricting theme. It's just a collection of darkness, depravity and delight.John, Livia and Josh are old friends, old battle-companions from the horror vanguard. As such I'm essentially redundant this week. I just turned the show over to them and got out of the way. I make an attempt at order and structure – we talk about making horror weird as hell, about drawing fiction from life, about how we use and abuse tropes in this new horror landscape, but mostly it's about community, friendship and weird, perverse joy in being creepy together.Oh, and Josh and I talk bad drug experiences, whilst Livia joins my fight to put sex back in horror!Enjoy!Dark Stars: New Tales of Darkest Horror is published on May 10th by Tor Nightfire in the US and Titan in the UK.Other books mentioned in this episode include:Dark Forces: New Stories of Suspense and Supernatural Horror (1980), ed. Episode one eighty one - part three Jenn sat down with Gretchen Felker-Martin to discuss her new novel with Tor Nightfire. MANHUNT is a tour de force of apocalyptic horror that centers the experiences of trans women and men on a journey of survival through a hostile world of ravenous feral men.
In space no one can hear you read! This week our guest is S.A. Barnes – who's new novel Dead Silence answers the (stupid) question, once and for all, of whether horror can take place in space. It's a tale of a blue-collar crew, who encounter more than they reckoned for when salvaging a fabled spaceship. You think you've seen this play out before, I know. You haven't.Stacey and I talk about all things “space-horror”, from the looming shadow of Alien and Event Horizon, to the most truly terrifying thing you can now encounter in orbit: a tech bro. We also talk romance in horror, Scottish ghosts, classic X Files episodes, what makes for a great haunted house (corners, amongst other things), and we both lament our shared anxiety when we hear a sound we can't recognise. This is just a pure fun book, and delightful conversation that boldly goes … etc, etc. Dead Silence is published on February 8th by Tor Nightfire.Enjoy! Well, we made it to the end of this nightmare of a year. And though there has been plenty of horrific stuff along the way – war, plague, corruption … literal armed insurrection, at least the fictional horror has been fun. I'm on holiday but I still give you goodies. ‘Cos that's the kind of all-round good guy that I am.And what a dark treat of a trick we have this week. The guest is Cassandra Khaw and their novella Nothing But Blackened Teeth will use it's liquorice-stained smile to chew you up.The book transports us to a crumbling mansion in Japan, where a hideous spectre haunts a group of utterly loathsome tourists. Honestly, you'll want them dead for their taste in music alone!Despite the slimness of the volume, Cass packs a lot into this book, just as we pack a lot into this conversation. As well as discussing the novella specifically, we also talk our fear and fondness for Ellen Datlow, the rich heritage of South East Asian ghost stories and the haunting house as colonised space. She also gives perhaps the best ever answer to the question “what really scares you?” It is a life lesson. Excuse my whining about my dog. This week we're doing something different. No author and no single book. Instead it's a roundtable discussion, with Sadie Hartmann (AKA Mother Horror) and Emily Hughes, the genius loci behind Tor Nightfire. Together we look back over the last six months – the highs, the not-so-many-lows and all the endless twitter controversies – to address the state of the horror nation at the midpoint of 2021.All three of us talk about the books we have loved the most so far this year, what else we are looking forward to in the months ahead, and what our hopes are for horror writing in general. We also address the concerns around trauma, trigger warnings, twitter subtweeting and the endless, vice-like grip of Goodreads. If you want to get a true sense of the breadth and depth of the horror being created right now, then this is designed for you. Also, if you just want to listen to three horror nerds talk about scary stuff whilst you do the ironing, then it's also for you.Basically, it's for everyone. Cos I'm a giver. Enjoy!Emily Hughes' list of horror books to be excited about in 2021 is HERE. If you're anything like us, today's double feature is going to make you wanna wear a leather jacket. Candace and Ariel are joined - for the second time - by author, blogger, and Twitter-famous person Jessica Guess to talk about 2019 Satanic horror comedies Satanic Panic, and We Summon the Darkness. These movies have a ton in common: murderous cults, rock n roll, great hair, 80's aesthetics, if not necessarily actual 80's settings. We'll tackle some important issues in this one, such as compulsory heterosexuality, characterizing virgins, the difference between Baphomet and Satan himself, realistic atmosphere for a midwestern road trip, and whether it's a good idea to go on the lam with someone who just tried to freaking murder you. If you don't trust us to tell you about this stuff, trust Jessica. She got a retweet from Stephen King. Jessica Guess is a writer and English teacher who hails from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She earned her Creative Writing MFA from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2018 and is the founder of the website Black Girl's Guide to Horror where she examines horror movies in terms of quality and intersectionality. Her creative work has been featured in Luna Station Quarterly and Tor Nightfire. Her debut novella, Cirque Berserk, is available for purchase on Amazon. Her short story, “The Nightmare Man,” appears in Shiver: A Cold Weather Horror Anthology. A proud part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network.
