Gary Sherman ist eine dieser verlässlichen Genregrößen, über die viel zu wenig gesprochen wird. Zeit also, diesen Missstand zu beheben! Yay!

We dig into the small-town murder-conspiracy thriller Dead and Buried as well as the ne plus ultra sleaze-thriller Vice Squad. The strengths and weaknesses of the films make for an interesting contrast that leads into a larger discussion about the practical intersections of screenwriting and on set filmmaking (with some talk about meddling producers thrown in for good measure.) The trio compares Dead and Buried's wonky & lumpy script (by Alien and Total Recall scribes Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett) to Vice Squad's drum-tight story to consider how screenwriting plays into (or interferes with) making two such memorable films. It's 1981, and things are not okay. Seemingly normal people are doing some pretty messed up things. One might even describe these acts as...nasty.A picturesque coastal town is the setting for the local residents to just kill people off whenever they feel like it. The local sheriff does his best to solve these mysterious deaths, but who can he trust? Especially when the mortician seems so into the art of perfectly preserving these corpses. You may not want to visit Potter's Bluff, or you could run the risk of becoming Dead & Buried (1981). A divided Berlin becomes the backdrop for a family drama. Certainly no elements of horror here. Not at all. The intense, explosive, at times, end of a relationship, and the disconcerting beginning of another. But what is that thing that Anna has in that apartment? And why has she become so obsessed? Possession (1981) has scenes that must be seen to be believed. And then from there, it's the Common Craig's Top 5 list of horror movies from 1981! The Summer of the 80s is really just getting underway.

Folks, episode 75 is a fun one. 1981's Dead and Buried, with Lights Out Black IPA, which our friends at @farfieldbeer in Lawndale gave us. A zombie/Lovecraftian picture set in the fictional Northeast town of Potters Bluff, it stars James Farentino as the local sheriff investigating some mysterious deaths. There's all manner of weirdness in this little town, and director Gary Sherman creates an atmosphere of dread throughout. Special effects legend is set loose to do some really fun stuff, too. Dan O'Bannon is credited with co-writing it, but that's questionable. To go with the dark, bleak story we have an often overlooked style of beer, the black IPA. Dead and Buried (1981)   Directed by Gary Sherman and Jack Albertson's last film, this mystery slasher set in a Maine coastal town where people disappear and come back as reanimated corpses.  The film bombed upon its initial release but loved by critics especially concerning its atmosphere and performances.  The film would later receive a cult following that multiplies every year.  The poster itself would become an iconic film poster.  Dan O'Bannon, one of the screenwriters would write scripts for Alien, Return of the Living Dead and Total Recall. The Uninvited (1987) The film primarily takes place aboard a luxury yacht owned by a criminal multimillionaire and bound for the Cayman Islands, whose passengers and crew are terrorized by a mutant cat. The film stars George Kennedy and cult classic actor Clu Gulagar.  The film would be a critic favourite and loved by all who see it or on the other side where they hated it and called it the worse film with no middle ground covered.  Opening Credits/Introduction (1.51); Oh My GOD!!! The good news is that O'Bannon's ALIEN co-writer Ronald Shusett had a project that he'd been working on prior to ALIEN about a small New England town that was overtaken by the undead, and he invited O'Bannon to help him out with the screenplay. The resulting film was DEAD & BURIED, directed by Gary Sherman, although O'Bannon's contributions to the script are disputed (mostly by O'Bannon himself).
