Geothermal is the holy grail of renewables! Without a renewable energy source that can deliver 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we will not be able to build a decarbonized world. These are the words of Jerome Cainglet, the President of Energy Development Corporation (EDC), the second-largest geothermal energy producer in the world. He also believes that collaboration and innovation are key to scaling geothermal energy worldwide. Did you know that geothermal is #alwayson?
Critical minerals might be flowing underground, right beneath your feet! That is great news. Because the minerals we need for clean technologies like electrical vehicles, solar panels and digital screens, often come from dirty, unsustainable mining processes concentrated in a few countries. John Worth, the CEO of Geo40, extracts minerals like lithium and silica from fluids, either from geothermal plants or other underground resources, without any rock crushing involved. Hear his story in the latest episode of our podcast, ‘The Switch – to a green economy.' Watch it on YouTube, listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Did you know that these minerals can be found in fluids?
Cutting offshore wind costs IKEA style! That's what Sam Kanner and his company Aikido have set out to do. 80% of the world's potential wind energy potential exists over deeper water, where the wind platforms need to be floating. There's just one problem: building, assembling and installing large, commercial-scale floating wind farms is costly and takes a long time, up to 10 years. Aikido's solution: a foldable, submersible technology that aims to build and assemble offshore wind farms twice as fast, just using a third of the space needed today. Almost like a flat pack from IKEA ... Watch this episode on YouTube or listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts to hear more. Did you know floating wind energy held such great potential? #WindPower #InnovativeTechnology #GreenInnovation #CleanEnergy
Heat pumps are a key technology to get to net zero and we need an estimated 400 million more of them by 2030. Kensa Group is leading the way in the UK, decarbonizing heating in whole city blocks with networked heat pumps. Tamsin Lishman, CEO of Kensa Group, is our guest in the latest episode of our podcast 'The Switch – to a green economy'. She says this is a huge opportunity not only to decarbonize, but also to fight fuel poverty, since the end solution is more affordable than traditional gas or electric heating systems. Watch this episode on YouTube or listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. How do you heat or cool the house where you live?
“Carbon is the trash of the climate era”. Amy Harder explains climate change and climate tech so anyone can understand it. Deciphering those complexities is the overarching mission at Cipher News, where she is the Executive Editor. We invited her to our latest episode of our podcast 'The Switch – to a green economy', to talk about, among other things, why knowledge about the energy transition needs to increase. One major reason, she said, is that we need to be able to get clear and concise answers to questions and concerns around the roll-out of clean energy. Cipher News is founded by Bill Gates' network Breakthrough Energy. Here are a few links to articles on Cipher News that we mention in the show: https://ciphernews.com/articles/paper-weighing-down-europes-renewables-push/ https://ciphernews.com/articles/a-treasure-hunt-for-underground-hydrogen-is-on/ https://ciphernews.com/articles/welcome-to-our-wild-and-wonky-climate-future-5/ https://www.latimes.com/newsletters/boiling-point
28% less greenhouse gas emissions. That's what Baker Hughes achieved only three years after committing to a net-zero goal by 2050. Coming from a history of over 100 years serving the oil and gas industry with drilling equipment, they were one of the first companies in their sector to announce such a target. Allyson Anderson Book is Baker Hughes' Chief Sustainability Officer and our guest on the latest episode of The Switch – to a green economy. Three main activities got their emissions down: Increased energy efficiency Changing to a low-carbon vehicle fleet More renewable and zero-carbon electricity This first step on the road to net-zero has focused on the company's own operations. Changing the emissions of their suppliers and customers will be a tougher nut to crack. But to make change happen, you have to start in your own backyard. Watch on YouTube, listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Were you surprised to hear an oil service company having a net-zero goal?
You drive your electric car to your friend's place to have dinner. You charge it at your friend's house, but the bill is sent to you. Isn't that clever? It will soon be a reality. We have more and more things at home that can produce and/or store energy, like solar panels, electrical vehicles, heat pumps. In this new energy landscape, we will all help offload the grid at times, storing energy in our vehicles or heat pumps and selling it back to the grid when it's needed. But for this to work seamlessly, it takes a digital system of trust. For your car to be able to charge at your friend's house, it needs a digital identity and a safe way of sharing data. This is what Sebastiaan Coppenholle specializes in. He is the Innovation Project Manager at 50 Hertz in Germany. Hear him describe the future of energy in this episode of The Switch – to a green economy.
There's a lot of talk of the green transition. But what does it mean and how far have we come? Kristina Hagström-Ilievska and Alexander Helling share their most important take-aways from the report State of the Transition from Breakthrough Energy, Bill Gates' innovation fund. Tune in for an overview of where we stand, and what the biggest challenges are in energy, manufacturing, agriculture, transport and buildings. Some interesting facts: Concrete is the second-most consumed material on the planet (second only to water). That's just one of the reasons it's both difficult and important to decarbonize. Cows burp and fart methane, a very strong warming agent heating up the planet. Research is ongoing for a vaccine that could reduce the methane emissions significantly. 80% of the IRA's (Inflation Reduction Act) emission reductions will not be realized if the US power grid's transmission capacity isn't increased by over 60% by 2030. When we talk about the transition to cleaner energy, the oil and gas industry is often the villain in the story, but the thing we must not forget is that this industry has provided us with a degree of economic growth and the comfort of living we know today. Therefore, it would be frivolous to expect that we can just switch off the fossil fuels industry. However, the oil and gas industry is indeed in transition to a more sustainable direction, in order to meet the changes in society. While fossil fuels will continue to play a role going into the future, the question is: how do we do that in a cleaner way? In the new episode of the Switch podcast we have the privilege of hosting Barbara Harrison, Vice President, Offsets & Emerging at Chevron New Energies, who is helping us understand Chevron's visionary approach, ambitious goals, and impressive projects that are propelling the energy transition forward. Tune in and find out what kind of knowledge can Chevron utilize and use to scale geothermal and transition, what are the projections for geothermal and what does geothermal need to do differently this time in order to scale.
Did you know that if everybody in Great Britain stopped sending the polite last “thank you” email, a coal power plant in Great Britain could be shut down? This part of the IT industry is rarely talked about or even acknowledged, but it is very much real. IT has a large climate footprint, and two biggest problems of this industry are demand for energy and hardware. One of the initiatives in Sweden that wanted to address this escalating problem and make it more visible in the public eye is NOX's Consulting CIOCO2. Behind the idea is Pernilla Ramslöv, not only the CEO of NOX Consulting, but also CEO of the year for small companies, EYEntrepreneur of the Year - Female shooting star, and Business life's most powerful female entrepreneur. In the new episode of the Switch podcast, we talked with Pernilla about solving footprint problems in the IT industry, as well as the future of leadership and focusing on opportunities regarding climate questions in order to create more action.
Did you know that fossil based energy production contributes to nearly 30 % of CO2 emissions globally? With the urgent need to change fossil based energy production to renewables, as well as coping with the new energy era that we are coming into, an old idea that has been around for decades is now becoming very interesting. Join us in the new episode of the Switch podcast as we dive into the world of large scale energy storage with Anna Engman, co-founder of Mine Storage and an avid entrepreneur and investor with experience of scaling several technology companies. Global IT industry stands for about 2 % of the global emissions, which is about the same as aviation. But did you know that the IT industry can greatly contribute to bringing down the rest of 98 %? If you wonder how, it basically comes down to IT's two superpowers: transformation and optimization. In the new episode of The Switch Podcast, we talked with Chiara Selvetti-Backéus, Director Sustainable Business at Atea Group, the leading IT infrastructure provider in the Nordic region, about how can the IT industry contribute to a more sustainable world, what is sustainable IT and how can we change the world with our wallet. Tune in for some great insights on sustainable IT from this esteemed sustainability professional!
As a “final warning”, world's leading climate scientists recently delivered the final part of IPCC, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. While the greenhouse gas emissions keep on rising, leading us to irrevocable damage, this report serves as “a code red for humanity”, calling for drastic action in reducing emissions. The question is: will we do now what we didn't do for the last 30 years, since the first warning from IPCC? Will we finally take real action to stay within 1.5C? In the new and very special episode of The Switch Podcast, we discussed the new IPCC report with Aurore Belfrage and Mattias Goldmann, two amazing sustainability experts which we have already had the opportunity to meet. Join us in this episode and explore with us important questions, like should we find better ways to communicate climate change and do we even have time to wait for people to find their reason for committing to change.
The world population is getting bigger and bigger, and carbon emissions show no signs of decreasing, despite the climate goals set for 2030 and 2050. According to the United Nations, the world population is projected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030, so we can all imagine what this will mean for climate and temperature. Dr. Sofia Liu, chairman of Department of Geosciences at National Taiwan University, and leader of the new Science and Technology Research Institute of DE-Carbonation, believes that it won't be enough just to switch to renewable energy and increase efficiency - there will still be 15-20 % of carbon left that we need to reduce. In the new episode of The Switch Podcast, Dr. Liu explained how we can exactly reduce carbon, how we can store it and what happens when we do that, but also why carbon storage will play a big role in many countries.
Humans are never perfect. What was an astonishing innovation 50 years ago, represents a problem that needs to be solved today. This is the case with mining and metal, a sector we depend on, but which also needs to reduce its climate impact. On the new episode of The Switch Podcast, we talked to mining expert Theo Yameogo about how mining and metals have the potential to help, not hinder the green transition. Theo currently coordinates the Mining and Metals practice at Ernst & Young for both Canada and the Americas, and has spent many years working in mining operations, engineering consulting and business consulting. He explains how we can optimize mining to lessen our dependency on it and on the raw materials extracted and how we can all contribute to change by demanding transparency.
Have you ever wondered how the Pentagon sees the world amidst climate change? Well, they call the climate a conflict multiplier. Apparently, by looking at climate change through this lens, we can see a completely different world and conflicts of a very different nature. So, can looking at the climate from a geopolitical perspective make us more proactive in protecting the planet? Aurore Belfrage, the latest guest on The Switch Podcast, believes so. As a tech diplomat, economist, investor, digitalization strategist in the green transition, political advisor and co-author of a book about how climate impacts the geopolitical landscape, she knows what she is saying. Aurore tells us how competing among countries can lead us to a more sustainable world, why 0.5% lower emissions may be a missed goal, and why we can't only focus on the profitable parts of the transition.
Every time Cristiano Ronaldo posts a photo on Instagram, his 500-million followers have to interact with a server to view it. The power required for all those people to see his photo is the equivalent of the power needed to heat two houses for a full year. Now imagine thousands and thousands of photos posted every minute, all the scrolling, googling, streaming… Every action on our electronic devices requires a data center, resulting in a huge consumption of energy and significant greenhouse gas emissions. So, what difference could it make to climate change if data centers transform the way they operate? Lars Schedin, our latest guest on The Switch Podcast, talks to us about how this is possible. Lars co-founded EcoDataCenter in 2016, one of the world's first climate-positive data centers. In the new episode of #notanotherpodcast we talked with Lars about his path, the future of data centers and importance of making them more sustainable.
Can we allow ourselves to not be interested in climate change? Our guest in the new episode of The Switch Podcast decisively says no, because it was us people that led this planet into the state of climate change. Guro Skjæveland is an Investment Manager in Nysnø Climate Investments, and a podcast guest that provided us a lot of optimism. Together with Nysnø, Guro has answers, climate solutions and ideas we should strive for. After all, their homeland Norway was always a forward thinking and environmental country. In the new episode of #notanotherpodcast, we talked to Guro about climate solutions, why “we have been investing where the impact isn't”, what kind of climate solutions we need and what we have to have in mind when building new green industries.
Entrepreneurs today are waking up to the fact that we don't need more photosharing apps or productivity tools. We need to solve societal issues”, says Jon Dishotsky, Investment Partner at Giant Ventures and our latest guest on The Switch, #notanotherpodcast.Jon believes that “all the change will come from startups and entrepreneurs who are scaling rapid new technologies to address these problems”. And as it exists to build and back purpose-driven companies solving the world's biggest problems, this is exactly where Giant Ventures deploys its capital.Since we have to make massive changes, especially when it comes to a problem like the climate crisis, the question is, do entrepreneurs have the strength to bear it all? Join us for the new episode of The Switch Podcast and find out more through this fascinating discussion with Jon Dishotsky. Jon is an early-stage investor and mentor focusing on pre-seed and seed. Before Giant Ventures, he was the co-founder and CEO of Starcity, a global co-living company with locations on multiple continents, hundreds of employees and that raised over $50M in venture capital. Jon has some great insights on impact investing and ways to “pair positive capitalism with widgets that are meaningful and good”.
Fifty percent of technologies that are needed for reaching net zero by 2050 are not yet invented. Where does that leave investors (and everyone else) in tackling the climate crisis? Are startups the solution for reaching net zero and does this make climate tech a hot investment? Also, what is the investor's responsibility in the climate crisis? These are just some of the many questions we asked our new guest in The Switch Podcast, Stefan Söderling, who we met at the CleanTech Scandinavia conference in Oslo. Stefan is Fund Manager & CEO at Almi Invest Greentech, where he has overall responsibility for teams and investments in Almi Invest's Greentech fund. He also works with his own investments, which involves finding, investing in and developing innovative companies withgrowth potential as well as implementing an exit strategy from the holding. He is interested in ethical and sustainable investments that improve our climate, environment and society.
Join Pia and The Switch podcast in the gospel of hope to make the green transition. We started The Switch Podcast because we wanted to change the language around climate change. There is a lot of talk about what is not functioning, so we wanted to flip this and focus on solutions and the companies providing them. One sentence that our latest guest, Pia Erkinheimo, shared with me perfectly embodies this mission of ours: “It is intellectually lazy if we always share horrifying news on social media without providing any solutions.” She calls this “gospel of hope”, and I'm loving it! We should all, including the media, take responsibility. Climate anxiety is raging among the younger generation, and we are not helping them. We need to change the tone and stop creating this “dystopian view of the world”, as Pia puts it. Fixing the system is necessary, but so is regulating and adapting ourselves. I really enjoyed talking with Pia Erkinheimo from The Finnish Climate Fund. Her passion for ClimateTech and innovation is contagious.
It's clear that there is a link between human and planetary health. According to the World Health Organization, the impacts of climate change affect clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food, and secure shelter. Our latest guest on the Switch podcast, Dr. Eric Dusseux, agrees, “Climate change is now one of the most important risk factors affecting public health.” Having known he wanted to be a doctor since he was a child, Dusseux was trained as a medical practitioner and epidemiologist specializing in public health. He now extends his passion for caring for people to caring for the planet as Venture Partner with Breakthrough Energy Ventures. This is a mission-oriented group committed to changing the world by creating and building companies that address the threat of climate change and the long-term sustainability of our planet. Eric was previously CEO of Bionik Laboratories, a medical device company, President Europe of Auregen Biotherapeutics, a startup using 3D bioprinting technology to treat children with rare disorders, and a senior executive in several leading pharmaceutical companies. On The Switch, we discuss the need to not just invest in cleantech but to actively help innovators scale up, clear current barriers to meeting net zero, and underscore how critical both public and private initiatives are to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The World Needs 9.2 Trillion Dollars invested every year to reach net zero by 2050.#podcast #climatechange
What if we've had it wrong all this time? Trying to persuade people to become more sustainable by using images of starving polar bears and whales with stomachs full of plastic or talking about the impact of climate change on future generations and people in far-off lands. What if the key to sustainability communications and change is actually to focus on you and I, here and now and the consequences for us if we do not change? The idea of moving away from messages of guilt and shame and unrelatable scenarios, and towards an attitude of "let's get it done and make great business out of it" is something about which our latest The Switch podcast guest is passionate. Where we focus on the positive implications of a planet in balance for the individuals, companies or governments of today. We welcome Mattias Goldmann to the podcast, founder of the 2030-secretariat for a decarbonized transport sector, and CEO of Goldmann Green. Mattias has been called Sweden's most influential voice within sustainability, he was knighted by the French President for his climate work and has won the lobbyist of the year award. He was previously Chief Sustainability Officer of Europe's largest technical consultancy, Sweco, CEO of Sweden's green and liberal think tank Fores, spokesperson for the Swedish Green Motorists, and elected for office for the Green Party. Together we explore how to engender change, why companies without an environmental purpose will be left behind, how we can take learnings from adapting to crises such as pandemics and wars and apply them to the green transition, and much more. Tune into the Switch!
Did you know technology currently has the same emissions as the global aviation industry? That's 1-2 % of total global carbon emissions! We are also generating 57 million tons of electronic waste, or e-waste, annually—that's equivalent to the weight of the Great Wall of China. By 2025 we will have 60 billion devices around the world, and by 2030 it's expected that e-waste will be around 70 million tons. E-waste is the biggest waste stream in the world. So, why aren't we talking about it? Moreover, why aren't we solving the problem? After all, as our guest on the latest episode of The Switch Podcast says, “it's really not that hard to start”. Our guest, Niklas Sundberg, is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at ASSA ABLOY Global Solutions. He is also the proud leader of a passionate group of IT professionals committed to sustainable digital transformation within the company and a sustainable/green-IT advocate. A lack of literature on this topic inspired him to write his book, "Sustainable IT Playbook for Technology Leaders", to educate, engage and activate other technology leaders to start their sustainable-IT journeys. What do we need to do? What are sustainable-IT practices? What is green-IT? What are the solutions to the problems that come with digitalization and hyper-connectivity? Niklas is here to tell us, so tune in to The Switch! Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC80E_iKroCyQ_at663T7dzA Website: https://theswitch.se/#the-podcast
For a long time, almost every business could claim to be sustainable, and it was hard to tell which claims were true and which were just greenwashing. The result was a lack of progress towards a more sustainable future. This is where the EU Taxonomy enters the story. As our guest in the new episode of The Switch Podcast describes it, a list of answers to the question “What is sustainable?”. The person who helped us understand the seemingly perplexing system of EU Taxonomy was Søren Berg Rasmussen, Investment Manager at Nefco, the Nordic Green Bank. At Nefco, he looks for Nordic small and medium-sized green technology and solution companies for Nefco to finance. Søren is also an EU Taxonomy and ESG enthusiast, and he describes himself as a green investment manager who is always seeking the sweet spot between pragmatism and regulation. In another episode of #notanotherpodcast Søren tells us everything about the EU Taxonomy, including why we need it and what it means for small and medium-sized companies.

For the last 40 years we have been talking about sustainability. Unfortunately, not much has really been done to date. A wise man would say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, and it seems that mankind is doing exactly that when it comes to sustainability and climate change. Can we afford not talking about the “elephant in the room” anymore? Do companies even have a choice to not put sustainability high on their agenda if they want to survive in the long run? What are we doing right, what are we doing wrong, are we fast enough, and can sustainability beat business? These are just some of the questions we asked our amazing guest in the new episode of The Switch Podcast, Valentin Montinero. He is Head of Sustainability at Schneider Electric Sweden, a company that is one of the pioneers in sustainability and was even named the world's most sustainable company in 2021. Valentin has been working within the Energy Management industry for the last 10 years, but he is also a climate and environmental activist. Join us in the new episode of #notanotherpodcast and find out what can businesses learn from Schneider Electric's sustainable strategy, but also what we as individuals can learn from Valentin.
