The Ultimate Budget 2024 explainer

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Thursday, July 25, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:India's benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 continued their decline for the fourth straight session. Sensex dropped 0.35 per cent while Nifty fell 0.27 per cent.Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman faced new challenges as she prepared for her seventh consecutive budget amidst changing political dynamics. The recent electoral results have shifted the political landscape, impacting the government's approach and introducing the pressures of coalition politics. Despite these pressures, the budget focused on maintaining fiscal discipline and promoting capital expenditure-led growth, writes N Madhavan. This was evident in the government's commitment to reducing fiscal deficits and boosting public investment to stimulate economic activity, hoping to catalyze private sector investment. Employment remained a central theme, with the government introducing schemes to enhance education, skills, and job creation, reflecting a proactive approach to harness India's demographic potential. Capital expenditure was maintained at robust levels to ensure continued infrastructure development and encourage state-level spending, which is typically more immediate in its economic impact. Overall, the budget balanced prudent fiscal management with necessary spending on critical areas, aiming to sustain growth without compromising financial stability. This explainer by Mint's senior editor  N Madhavan is the only one you will need to understand the Union Budget of 2024. Click on the link in the show notes to read. The $250 billion IT services sector had a rough start in Q1 FY25, with mixed performances from big names like TCS, HCLTech, Infosys, Wipro, and LTIMindtree. Companies are still holding back on spending, and the much-anticipated boom from AI projects hasn't quite hit yet. For instance, TCS saw a dip in its operating margins and overall contract values, while Infosys actually did better than expected, prompting it to boost its revenue outlook for FY25. Looking forward, there's a cautious optimism in the air. Global IT spending is expected to rise by 7.5% this year, but sectors like banking and financial services are keeping their wallets tight, which affects overall growth. The industry is hopeful for a stronger second half of the fiscal year as companies start loosening the purse strings and AI projects scale up. Mint's Shelley Singh explains whether the IT sector will see a resurgence in the ongoing fiscal year or not in today's Mint Primer. In its first budget after a modest election victory, the BJP-led government is putting job creation at the forefront with new financial incentives to boost formal-sector employment. Details are pending, but the gist is clear: financial perks for hiring and for new employees signing up. However, given the deep-seated issues in India's job market and employers' typical aversion to formalizing roles, it's uncertain how much these incentives will actually move the needle. With three new schemes, the government aims to formalize more jobs, but past patterns suggest a tough road ahead. Real change might need more than just incentives if the underlying issues of job security and employer reluctance aren't addressed. Our partners at howindialives.com take a comprehensive look at the job-creation schemes through charts and numbers and whether these schemes can deliver what they promise. Travelling from airports like Bengaluru, Kochi, or Ahmedabad? It might cost you more, even if your airline hasn't hiked its fares. This is due to increased airport charges, specifically the user development fees, which are passed from the airline to the airport operator and, ultimately, to travellers. Since the start of FY25, 16 major airports across India, including those in cities like Hyderabad, Mangalore, and Chennai, have increased the fee by 2 to 200 per cent, Mint's aviation correspondent Anu Sharma reports. This rise in airport fees adds another layer to the already higher airfares this year, driven by a shortage of available aircraft and a spike in demand. The Centre is committed to maintaining its fiscal deficit below 4.5% of GDP for FY26, continuing its track record of exceeding fiscal projections. Speaking to Mint's Rhik Kundu and Subhash Narayan, finance secretary T.V. Somanathan said this goal, announced during the budget on Tuesday, aligns with the fiscal consolidation path set by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The government aims to cut down the deficit from the 9.1% peak during the pandemic. The capex plan of the Central government will remain at about 3.4% of GDP, consistent with levels from the interim budget, and it may see an absolute increase in FY26. Somanathan indicated that while the percentage of GDP allocated to capex will hold steady, the actual amounts could rise, reflecting the government's commitment to maintaining robust investment levels in the coming years. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Global IT spending is projected to surge by 7.5% in 2024, driven by increased demand for data center systems and IT services, particularly generative AI. The growth forecast highlights the sustained demand for managed services and cloud solutions, indicating a shift towards comprehensive IT management solutions offered by MSPs.Secondly, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is facing a regulatory showdown in the EU as it withholds its new multimodal AI model from European customers due to regulatory uncertainties. This decision reflects a broader trend among U.S. tech giants to withhold products from European markets, raising concerns about data privacy and compliance with GDPR regulations. The move underscores the challenges tech companies face in navigating complex regulatory landscapes across different regions.Thirdly, the podcast delves into the impact of legacy tech upgrades on businesses, with the average company spending $2.9 million on maintaining and upgrading outdated systems. Legacy systems pose challenges for implementing emerging technologies like AI, impacting productivity and hindering innovation. The episode emphasizes the importance of modernization roadmaps and cloud migration strategies to help businesses transition to more agile and scalable IT infrastructures.Lastly, the episode touches on NATO's plans to establish a new cyber defense center in Belgium to protect allied cyberspace operations. This initiative comes in response to the rise in politically motivated cyber attacks since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, highlighting the growing importance of cybersecurity in the geopolitical landscape. The establishment of the NATO Integrated Cyber Defense Center underscores the evolving nature of cyber warfare and the need for collective resilience and defense strategies in the digital age. Three things to know today 00:00 Global IT Spending to Surge by 7.5% in 2024, Driven by Data Center Systems and IT Services04:19 Meta's Regulatory Showdown: EU Customers Denied Access to New Multimodal AI Model07:25 Legacy Tech Upgrades Costing Businesses Millions, Hindering AI Adoption and Productivity All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories? In this episode, we flip the script on our show and put Brian Hayes, Senior Director, Financial Services Industry Vertical at VMWare in the guest seat. We discuss the digital transformation of the financial services industry. Brian highlights the need for financial institutions to embrace digital transformation, adopt agile methodologies, and cultivate a culture of innovation to stay competitive in the rapidly changing industry.Hayes emphasizes the importance of understanding customers' needs and preferences, using emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain to create personalized, relevant experiences. Brian also acknowledges the challenges of balancing innovation with regulatory compliance and risk management. Ultimately, successful digital transformation requires a collaborative approach, a focus on the customer, and a commitment to experimentation and continuous learning.3 Takeaways:The financial services industry is undergoing a rapid and significant transformation driven by technology and changing customer expectations. Digital disruption is changing the way financial services are delivered and experienced, and financial institutions must adapt quickly to remain competitive. This transformation requires a deep understanding of customers' needs and preferences, as well as the ability to leverage emerging technologies to create new, innovative products and services. To stay competitive, financial services organizations must embrace digital transformation, adopt agile methodologies, and cultivate a culture of innovation. This requires a willingness to experiment and take risks, and the ability to quickly iterate and adapt in response to changing market conditions. Successful digital transformation also requires a collaborative approach, with cross-functional teams working together to develop and implement new solutions.Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain are revolutionizing the way financial services are delivered and creating new opportunities for innovation and growth. These technologies have the potential to transform everything from payments and lending to risk management and regulatory compliance. Financial institutions that can effectively leverage these technologies will be better positioned to create new revenue streams, improve customer experiences, and drive operational efficiencies. However, it's important to remember that technology alone is not enough – a successful digital transformation also requires a deep understanding of the business, the ability to navigate regulatory and compliance requirements, and a commitment to developing a culture of innovation.Key Quotes: "Digital transformation is not just about technology, it's about culture and mindset. Financial institutions must be willing to challenge the status quo, experiment with new ideas, and embrace a culture of innovation. This requires a willingness to take risks and try new things, even if they don't always work out. Success in digital transformation also requires a focus on the customer – understanding their needs and preferences, and delivering personalized, relevant experiences that meet and exceed their expectations.""Innovation requires experimentation, and experimentation requires a culture of tolerance for failure. Financial institutions must be willing to take risks and try new things, even if they don't always work out. This requires a culture that values experimentation and learning, and is willing to accept failure as an inevitable part of the innovation process. By fostering a culture of experimentation, financial institutions can create an environment where new ideas can flourish, and where teams are empowered to take risks and try new things.""The future of financial services is all about customer experience and delivering personalized, relevant services at scale. Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning can play a key role in delivering these experiences, but they must be deployed in a thoughtful and strategic way. Financial institutions must focus on understanding their customers' needs and preferences, and using technology to deliver solutions that meet those needs. By doing so, they can create differentiated experiences that drive customer loyalty and ultimately, business growth."Best Career Advice:The most important thing you can do for your career is to be a lifelong learner. Keep an open mind, be curious, and never stop learning. Seek out new experiences, challenge yourself, and be willing to take risks. And always remember to stay humble and never stop asking questions.Bio:Brian Hayes, Senior Director, Financial Services Industry Solutions Brian is accountable for the ecosystem, solution, and go-to-market strategy, of VMware's offerings to Financial Services customers globally, working with the broader VMware ecosystem and partners including key global product, applications, and consulting organisations.Formerly a Managing Director within the FS Industry, he brings considerable technology and business experience having held Global IT functional and leadership roles in Retail Banking, Capital Markets and Market Exchanges for such companies as HSBC, Barclays Bank, Morgan Stanley, and NYSE. In a highly regulated industry where failures are costly, Tonia's philosophy is to fail fast through what she calls “data-to-wisdom sprints.” These two-week hackathons enable her group to rapidly test the feasibility of new product ideas with input from their colleagues on the business side. “It's not personal, it's business.” How many times have you heard that phrase throughout your career? For the longest time, business success has gone hand in hand with a certain degree of toughness and ambition. After all, you've got competition to worry about, revenue goals to hit, and in many cases, investors to answer to. On the turn of a dime, business can become cutthroat. You need to build walls to keep your company secrets safe — because if you don't, you lose and your competitors win. Even within organizations, there is a tendency to separate processes and people and silo data and keep people in one lane or another. But what if there was an alternative? Elastic believes in that different way, and Kim Huffman, the VP of Global IT at Elastic, is helping the team to lean into the idea that an open, supportive, distributed system is the way forward. While most businesses keep a tight lid on their business by employing an aggressive and impersonal approach, at Elastic, everything is out in the open. With a distributed workforce and an open-source mentality, Elastic is giving everyone access to the most precious resource currently available.  But scarcity creates value, so when everyone has access to something valuable, is it still worth as much as we think? When everyone can win, does anyone really win? And with so much out in the open, how is Elastic continuing to innovate in new ways and stay ahead of the curve? Find out on this episode. Main Takeaways: A Share of the Pie: With big world problems to solve, open-source and open innovation has proven to have huge potential, especially in a crisis. Embracing a collaborative approach does not only help to solve problems externally, a seed change from the us-vs-them mindset to a collaborative and open approach could promote similar behavior within companies and ultimately end in happier customers.Honesty Rules: Most people in senior leadership do not have people who hold a mirror up to them and tell them the truth. If you want the leadership team to grow and work toward the same goals, honesty with no repercussions is the route to building trust. Leaders should encourage openness and honesty and open themselves for feedback.Embed Empathy: The dog-eat-dog corporate narrative of the past has given way to the concept of empathy as the secret of business success. It is no longer being regarded as a soft skill.  Human-centric strategies that focus on people first and sharing experiences have become more important.People-Centered Resilience: Building a resilient organization or company that can adapt to a crisis is all about the people. Give people the technology tools, information and support to feel engaged and communicate openly and transparently to build trust. With that kind of culture, employees will buy in, feel personally connected, and work hard when the company sees challenging times.---Business X factors is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by Hyland. For over a decade, Hyland has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms, leading the way to help people get the information they need when and where they need it. As employees rushed to set up monitors and home offices in their new environments, businesses across the world were recognizing an inevitable reality:: that this new lifestyle was here to stay.“As this progresses, the next normal is going to be about mobility and flexibility. We've got a taste of this working from home thing that [we’ve] never had before, and they're going to want to do both, which is going to bring on new challenges.”Welcome to the “Next Normal,” where new remote working demands are establishing a host of lifestyle changes for employees, and concurrently creating a larger list of challenges for their employers. On this episode of IT Visionaries, Kim Huffman, the VP of Global IT at Elastic, opens up about distributed workforces and why Elastic believes strongly in them. But she is honest about the obstacles that work from anywhere creates when it comes to managing the endpoints of your fleet, and she discusses how IT leaders can handle the transition.Main TakeawaysKnow Your Fleet: For distributed teams, having an understanding of your endpoints is critically important. You need to always be thinking about where you are most vulnerable at those endpoints, and the points of attack they may be opening themselves up to to understand how they can be as secure as possible. Managing your endpointDrink Your Own Champagne: One of the more important operating principals  at Elastic is its ability and willingness to test its own products in-house. When you beta test your apps with your own team, it affords you the opportunity to fix bugs or breakdowns within the system prior to that product ever reaching the customer. Is This Secure? Just because you are operating on a VPN network, does not necessarily mean your network is secure. Even when you are on VPN, the user is still subjected to various forms of cyberattacks. As IT leaders, it’s important to constantly be evaluating the incoming information from your devices and managing them at their endpoints.---IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. Indian investors are far more excited about the prospects of IT companies than in the US. The difference, it seems, lies in the composition of Indian and US markets.

That the cleantech industry is so dynamic is one of its biggest appeals, and its biggest challenges. At Hyperion our goal is to help the world’s best cleantech companies find the talent to achieve their goals and ambitions, and to help founders towards their desired exit. I interviewed LImejump founder, and former CEO Erik Nygard on a previous episode, at the time Hyperion were supporting him to hire a COO. That process went well, and Cat Newman was hired into the role, so well in fact that she has recently been promoted to CEO as Erik moves on to new pastures, after their acquisition by Shell. It was great to talk to Cat about the challenges of moving from corporate to start-ups, about building structure and process for growth, about diversity and so much more. I hope you enjoy the episode. About Catherine Newman Catherine joined Limejump in February 2020, initially to run the Commercial and Trading teams as COO. In July 2020, Catherine moved into the role of CEO with plans to drive the company’s growth towards becoming the largest transformational player in the global renewable market. Previous to Limejump, Catherine spent 11 years at Gazprom Marketing and Trading. During this time Catherine was in a variety of roles – most noteworthy being COO of Trading and Director of Global IT and Delivery – she also chaired the operating committee. Prior to this, Catherine worked at BP. Even though Catherine has worked in the energy trading space for over 20 years, her career started in bioinformatics at Pfizer – she also spent time enjoying the dotcom bubble. This initial career choice followed her BSc (Hons) in Genetics and MSc in Bioinformatics in 1998, both from the University of Manchester. After the dotcom bubble burst, Catherine moved into energy consultancy where she spent time at most of the major energy players across Europe. In her spare time Catherine enjoys family life, keeping fit, gardening and cooking. She is a mental health first aider and is a strong advocate for keeping ‘the balance’ right in life. Of humanity itself. That tapping into that indomitable spirit of competition brings about breakthroughs and solutions that once seemed unimaginable. Impossible. We believe that you get what you incentivize. And that without a target, you will miss it every time. Rather than throw money at a problem, we incentivize the solution and challenge the world to solve it. We believe that challenges must be audacious, but achievable, tied to objective, measurable goals. And understandable by all. We believe that solutions can come from anyone, anywhere and that some of the greatest minds of our time remain untapped, ready to be engaged by a world that is in desperate need of help. Solutions. Change. And radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity. Call us crazy, but we believe. http://www.xprize.org/
