Google's data centers consume an enormous amount of electricity. That's prompted the information giant to proactively engage in the accelerating energy revolution. From Nevada to North Carolina and many points between, it is gearing up to power the Artificial Intelligence wave by striking novel relationships with utilities and encouraging the transformation of energy regulation, state by state. That is the focus of this episode of Grid talk. Host Marty Rosenberg interviews Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's Global Head of Data Center Energy.Google, citing industry sources, says and additional $2.5 trillion must be spent on clean energy over the next six years to address climate change. “What we have encountered is a universal recognition that we are in a unique moment in time,” said Peterson Corio. “For the first time in decades, we have real load growth in the U.S.”Google's response is to deepen its use of clean energy. “We are matching 100% of the electricity we use on an annual basis with new additional clean energy that we put onto the grid somewhere in the system or in the world.”That effort will now be broadened. “Our higher standard of our 24/7 carbon-free energy goal actually takes that a step further and says if we're truly going to decarbonize the grid where we operate, we need to make it first local, meaning we can't just only sign a new contract for wind or solar, for example, in the Midwest to offset our data center in Singapore, right? Carbon is a global problem, but we also need to find solutions directly where we operate.”Amanda Peterson Corio has 20 years of experience in energy project finance, development, and the procurement of renewable and traditional energy generation. In her current role, Amanda manages power procurement, energy policy, and energy infrastructure development for Google's global data centers. Amanda holds an MBA from The Wharton School of Business and a BA in Business Administration with Honors from Boston University's School of Management.

In this episode, we chat with Eric Desaulniers, President & CEO of Nouveau Monde Graphite, who are striving to become a key contributor to the sustainable energy revolution as the is working towards developing a fully integrated source of carbon-neutral battery anode material in Québec, Canada for the growing lithium-ion and fuel cell markets. A geologist by background, Eric's specialises in geophysics and integrated 3D earth modelling before joining the team at NMG back in 2011. He is going to talk about: The role of Canadian miners in the North American energy transition. How the company is establishing a sustainable supply of domestic graphite to companies like General Motors and Panasonic. Why the future of North American mining is promising…. as more companies look to onshore rather than import/offshore as more environmental regulations/trade tariffs are put in place. KEY TAKEAWAYS Nouvelle Monde Graphite has secured agreements with major companies like General Motors and Panasonic, showcasing the company's commitment to sustainable supply and domestic production of graphite. The future of North American mining looks promising as companies like Nouvelle Monde Graphite focus on onshore production to meet the increasing demand for critical minerals in the green energy revolution. Eric highlighted the challenges and opportunities in the mining industry, emphasising the importance of understanding the entire supply chain, from mining to transformation, for companies like GM and Panasonic. The company is focused on achieving a final investment decision (FID) to move forward with their large-scale project, demonstrating the commitment of stakeholders and governments towards sustainable mining practices. BEST MOMENTS "It's not that much the mining that is a challenge. It's only one third of the cost, one third of the capex and the opex. It's the two-thirds and also the expertise." "So now it's clear we have the best partner out there. And our goal was never to be the only open pit mining or electric mining operation. It was to have the most electric operation out there." "Graphite represents about one kilogram per kilowatt hour of battery capacity. If you have a Tesla, it's about 100 kilograms of graphite, so it's quite significant." "It's not like a typical mining project. It's really every year you need to do something more on the product, you need to qualify it with customers, you need to understand what they do with your product." Professor Tim Evans of Middlesex University assesses the report of The Commission on the Centre of Government and its main proposals. To him, its suggestions point to running things more in the way a business is managed, with proper budgets for projects and making ministers accountable. He looks at why so many people in the UK aren't working, the effects of Covid, high taxes and healthcare problems. And he believes that the PM's U-turn on gas plants recognises that wind and solar can't do it all. But, on the horizon, nuclear fusion suddenly looks an imminent reality, which will have profound implications, not just for energy but also for geopolitics. Learn more about your ad choices. Small modular nuclear reactors have long been utilised by the US Defence Department in aircraft carriers and submarines. Now, a consortium led by South African venture capitalist André Pienaar aims to introduce mini nuclear reactors to South Africa. In an interview with Biznews, Pienaar, the Founder and CEO of C5 Capital, elaborated on plans to bring this technology to the Western Cape. His initial focus is on supplying energy to data centres in the province. Using analogies from television and film, Pienaar envisions transforming the nuclear energy sector in South Africa from the large and hazardous depictions in The Simpsons to the compact, modular reactors used by Tony Stark in Iron Man for clean energy provision. South Africa, he said, possesses a robust nuclear ecosystem and a well-established regulatory framework for nuclear energy. Pienaar revealed that numerous South African nuclear engineers, some with prior experience at Eskom, have relocated to the United States under the same visa that facilitated Einstein's immigration. These engineers now contribute to X-Energy, a company in which C5 holds a significant stake. The plan to introduce mini reactors to South Africa is still in its early stages, he said. The first milestone, a feasibility study, has been completed. The next step for the consortium will be to finalise the financing model and seek regulatory and permitting approvals. Pienaar believes that bringing mini nuclear reactors for power generation to South Africa is a compelling proposition. “This is South Africa's opportunity to lose because several other countries are moving forward with similar projects,” he said.
Ramya Swaminathan is the CEO of Malta Inc, a company that spun out of Google's moonshot factory in 2018 to work on an energy storage solution using the existing power grid. One thing holding the world back from a transition to clean energy: electricity generated from sources like the sun and wind has to be used right away or it disappears…but one possible answer might be—salt. This week on How I Built This Lab, Ramya recounts how she got into the renewable energy industry with two previous companies focused on hydropower. She also explains how molten salt and coolant might be better than batteries as a low-cost, long-duration and job-preserving energy storage solution. This episode was produced by J.C. On Today's Episode: Utility regulators quietly drive the clean energy revolution — yet many energy industry participants know little about them. SunCast Host Nico Johnson pulls back the curtain today in an engaging conversation with Carrie Zalewski, former chair of the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC).Carrie leverages her experience as a regulator and energy attorney, plus her background in engineering, to bring a unique perspective to a discussion on the complex world of energy regulation. From influencing how public utilities spend money, to supporting clean energy initiatives and designing beneficial electrification plans that address storage and transmission, Public Utility Commissions (PUCs) tackle a wide range of critical issues affecting your every day life.Four years ago, Carrie joined the ICC from the Illinois Pollution Control Board, where she adjudicated complex environmental cases under the Illinois Environmental Protection Act, shaped critical rulemaking and worked to properly balance the interests of Illinois businesses and residents while protecting the state's land, air, and water. In 2021, the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) named Carrie as head of a new resource group for Commission Chairs from all 50 states and regions to discuss relevant and timely topics. She's also participated in several influential organizations, such as the Organization of Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) States and the Climate Registry's Council of Jurisdictions.Carrie left the ICC on June 16, seven months before her five-year term expired, for personal and professional reasons. Her fingerprints and impact will be felt for much longer than her tenure might suggest. Today's conversation is wide-ranging and highlights exactly why it's so important for industry to understand and learn to work with the Commissioners responsible for regulating energy and other resources across the Nation. Carrie was generous with her time and extensive knowledge in helping guide us through the complex undertaking that commissioners engage as public servants. If you're interested in supporting renewables, gaining better insight into the outsize role of utility regulators or understanding how PUC decisions impact businesses and communities, this episode is a must-listen. Join Nico as he uncovers the intricacies of energy regulation and the significant role regulators have in shaping our clean energy future. You'll learn how engaging with state regulators can help you make a difference in the clean energy community and why, as a business or individual, it makes a lot of sense to do so. Peter Manos, Director of Research for Electric Power & Smart Grid, on the Energy Sector team at ARC Advisory Group, speaks with ARC Analyst Gaven Simon about the importance of ESG data and the role it plays in having informed debates regarding climate policies. They cover how Digital Twins can be useful for estimating the IRA's impact and ways in which AI and ML will enable industries to make better decisions in response to the energy transition and sustainability drivers. Peter and Gaven end their discussion by considering misplaced pushback the IRA has received, which neglects the importance of the “reduction” part of the bill. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Would you like to be a guest on our growing podcast? Nic Carter is a Partner at Castle Island Ventures, and Troy Cross is a Fellow at the Bitcoin Policy Institute. In this interview, we discuss Bitcoin mining as an ESG offset and how Bitcoin miners could be the frontier of energy development whilst helping nations attain energy sovereignty. - - - - The two extremes of the climate change debate are engaged in a zero-sum game. For some, the existential threat of climate change requires humans to rapidly transition to energy production 100% derived from renewable sources. A particular contingent believes a transition is required by force: a carbon tax to dissuade investment in fossil fuels and a degrowth agenda to enable society to prioritise the use of more limited but sustainable energy sources. The counterargument is that catastrophic climate change isn't inevitable. Therefore, whilst there are insufficient cost-effective and reliable renewable energy sources, constraining the use of fossil fuels is a dangerous dogma that risks preventing vast swathes of the world from being able to escape poverty. Does the argument need to be this binary? Is there an alternative that uses the power of the market rather than relying on coercive measures? If we assume that if energy sources were equally cost-effective and reliable, the obvious choice would be to invest in those that are renewable and that have the lowest negative impacts. The issue would then be how do you make renewable energy cost-effective and reliable. The answer is counterintuitive: meet what those who promote fossil fuels want - facilitate energy abundance. Troy Cross thinks this is how Bitcoin can help bridge the divide, enable a rapid transition to renewable sources, whilst ensuring the world's population can flourish.
