If present trends continue, a UN panel of scientists says it would be “disastrous for humankind.” Fossil fuels, including coal, are major contributors to global warming. So, what is the regime in Washington doing about it? It's promoting fossil fuels with its mantra-like chants “Clean, Beautiful Coal” and “Drill Baby, Drill.” However, energy from the sun and wind is cheaper, more reliable, and better for the climate. And it's growing faster than any energy source in history. Bill McKibben says, “Our liberation and our destruction are arriving at precisely the same time. #316 Rebekah Pierce runs a regenerative sheep farm in upstate New York and has cracked the code on making solar farms work for agriculture. Her new book "Agri Energy" reveals how combining solar panels with farming creates a win for developers, farmers, and rural communities.The land use math is stunning. The US dedicates 30 million acres to growing corn for ethanol fuel. Solar panels are 100 times more efficient at converting land into energy. We need just 1% of US land (23 million acres) to supply all our electricity with solar alone. Prior to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Moldova was ranked by the International Energy Agency (IEA) as among the least self sufficient countries in the world in terms of energy. The country imported nearly all of its natural gas from Russia, and gas provided to the Transnistrian region by Russia free of charge was used to generate about 75% of the country's electricity. With the onset of the war, and Russia's choice to spark multiple energy crises in Moldova as a tool of coercion, the country has had to make rapid changes. Moldova's Renewable Energy Revolution In April 2025, an all-time record of 36% of the country's total electricity consumption was provided by locally produced renewable energy. Right now, Moldova has more than 750 MW of installed renewables capacity - more than an 8x increase from 4 years ago. Of this, 529 MW is from photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, 212 MW is from wind energy and the rest is from biogas and hydroelectric. By far the fastest growing source of power generation in Moldova is PV panels. The Complex Public-Private Mix Driving Investment Since Moldova fully broke away from Russian supplied energy, consumer electricity prices have skyrocketed. This has led to a major push from the government to diversify energy sources and modernize the country's energy market. In a situation where the country's only major traditional power generation capability is two small scale Soviet-era thermoelectric plants, this has led to a major pivot towards renewables. Carolina Novac, State Secretary of the newly created Ministry of Energy, explained that the government now has 3 priorities in the energy market - security, affordability and competition. Taken together these priorities mean Moldovan made energy, especially renewables. The Ministry recently approved the results of a series of tenders for the construction of new renewable energy installations, namely 105 MW of wind and 60 MW of solar. According to Irina Apostol, Energy Manager at NGO Green City Lab in Chisinau, investments like these are attractive because the suppliers can benefit from 15 year fixed-rate supply contracts. But there are also options for smaller investors to get involved in Moldova's energy transition. For "small producers" building photovoltaic plants up to 1 MW there is another program allowing for regulated fixed-rates for power production also on 15-year contracts. This program has limits though, equipment can't be older than 36 months and there is a cap on the total capacity that can be licensed under this plan. The country's existing power grid and regulatory framework mean that there are lots of new opportunities, but also lots of upgrades and reforms needed to build a modern, green energy system. Energy Aggregators and Small Investors Navitas Energy, a subsidiary of Moldova's largest power company Premier Energy, is a major player in Moldova's renewable energy market. The company operates on the unregulated market, buying and selling energy according to market prices without long term guaranteed contracts. They have constructed 5 photovoltaic parks of their own with a capacity of 18 MW, but also work with other small producers as an aggregator. "Navitas Energy SRL, acting as an aggregator together with the producers that own 121 renewable energy power generation plants, accumulates a total installed capacity of 180 MW." writes Navitas CEO Mihail Gidei The small investors behind those 121 solar and wind power plants sell energy to Navitas which bundles this power and sells it forward - both to Moldovan customers and on the Romanian and Ukrainian markets. This allows small producers who might not be eligible for fixed contract government programs to invest and sell their energy to consumers. The average producer in Navitas' network is rela...

People are installing solar panels equivalent to a coal-fired power plant every 18 hours. This is the fastest energy transition in history — and it may just help save democracy.“There is one big good thing happening on planet Earth and it's so big and so good that it actually has the capacity to help not only with the overwhelming climate crisis, but also with the crisis of inequality and of democracy that we're facing now,” McKibben told The Vermont Conversation. “That one big thing is this sudden surge of clean energy, especially from the sun, that over the last 36 months, has begun to really rewrite what power means on planet Earth.”McKibben explained that what used to be called “alternative energy” is now mainstream. “Four years ago or so we passed some invisible line where it became cheaper to produce power from the sun and the wind than from burning things. And that's a completely epochal moment. Most days, California is generating more than 100% of its power for long stretches from renewable energy.”“Here's a statistic just to stick in your mind that will give you hope, too,” he offered. “A single boatload of solar panels coming from someplace like China will, over the course of its lifetime, produce 500 times as much energy as that same ship filled with coal. We're not talking about a slightly better version of what we have now. We're talking about a very different world.”McKibben is currently spearheading Sun Day, which will take place on Sept. 21, 2025. It will be a global day of action celebrating solar and wind power and the movement to leave fossil fuels behind.“Think about what the foreign policy, the geopolitics of planet Earth would have looked like in the last 70 years if oil was not a valuable commodity,” he said. “Human beings are extremely good at figuring out how to start wars, but figuring out how to start one over sunshine is going to be a trick.”Vermont is already feeling the impact of this energy shift. “The biggest single power plant in Vermont is now the collection of batteries that Green Mountain Power has helped people put in their basements and garages and that they can call on in time of need to provide power,” he saidBill McKibben is the author of over 20 books and a regular contributor to The New Yorker, the New York Times, and his Substack, The Crucial Years. He is the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College. He has won the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Right Livelihood Award, known as the alternative Nobel Prize.Alongside his writing, the Ripton resident has founded the global grassroots climate action group 350.org, and Third Act, a political movement of people over 60 to use their “unparalleled generational power to safeguard our climate and democracy.” The organization now boasts some 70,000 members.As the country and world teeter on a precipice, what gives McKibben hope?“Just that we're still here and fighting and that we have this new tool. Google's data centers consume an enormous amount of electricity. That's prompted the information giant to proactively engage in the accelerating energy revolution. From Nevada to North Carolina and many points between, it is gearing up to power the Artificial Intelligence wave by striking novel relationships with utilities and encouraging the transformation of energy regulation, state by state. That is the focus of this episode of Grid talk. Host Marty Rosenberg interviews Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's Global Head of Data Center Energy.Google, citing industry sources, says and additional $2.5 trillion must be spent on clean energy over the next six years to address climate change. “What we have encountered is a universal recognition that we are in a unique moment in time,” said Peterson Corio. “For the first time in decades, we have real load growth in the U.S.”Google's response is to deepen its use of clean energy. “We are matching 100% of the electricity we use on an annual basis with new additional clean energy that we put onto the grid somewhere in the system or in the world.”That effort will now be broadened. “Our higher standard of our 24/7 carbon-free energy goal actually takes that a step further and says if we're truly going to decarbonize the grid where we operate, we need to make it first local, meaning we can't just only sign a new contract for wind or solar, for example, in the Midwest to offset our data center in Singapore, right? Carbon is a global problem, but we also need to find solutions directly where we operate.”Amanda Peterson Corio has 20 years of experience in energy project finance, development, and the procurement of renewable and traditional energy generation. In her current role, Amanda manages power procurement, energy policy, and energy infrastructure development for Google's global data centers.
