It's been an eventful week and this episode of the AJ Bell Money & Markets podcast explores the key reasons behind the global market sell-off and what might happen next. Dan Coatsworth explains why shares slumped and he reveals the total value destroyed on global stock markets and the winners and losers on the FTSE 100. Laith Khalaf reveals why bond markets were showing unusual behaviour and the pair chat about why some companies like Games Workshop and Diageo might not be as badly affected as investors think. [02:50] Dan talks to Morningstar equity strategist Michael Field about what Liberation Day means for European stocks and shares which had a great run in the first quarter of the year. [26:23] If you've been spooked by the market sell-off and are worried about your investments, Dan and Laith offer some reassurance and explain why there is no reason to panic. [35:45] Laith has some interesting statistics on why it can pay to use your ISA allowance at the start of a tax year rather than at the end. [42:30]. Dan finds some interesting trend with AJ Bell customer behaviour during the market sell-off. [46:59]. Finally, Jonathan Maxwell from SDCL Energy Efficiency Income Trust is on the podcast to talk about the Trump administration rolling back green policies and whether that creates a headwind for renewable energy investors. [54:55].
Jonathan Maxwell, the founding partner and CEO of energy transition investor Sustainable Development Capital LLP (SDCL), joins NPM on this episode to give us his view on financing infrastructure in the energy efficiency space in various countries across the world. Last month I had insightful conversations with two leaders in impact investing and sustainability. The first was with Rochus Mommartz, who is the CEO of responsAbility, and the other was with Jonathan Maxwell, who is the founding partner and CEO of Sustainable Development Capital. This episode is a special one which serves as a recap of the episodes from last month. It features a couple of key clips from each conversation in one place so you can jump around and get a feel for both the episode and the guest. Here's the full list of the guests featured today and the links to their full episode:Rochus Mommartz, the CEO of responsAbilityRochus Mommartz is a pioneer in impact investing who has spent decades creating opportunities for people in emerging markets. He played a key role in developing regulatory frameworks and microfinance models that enable financial inclusion and long-term growth for communities across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.My interview with Rochus was so long and so compelling that I ended up splitting it into two episodes. We talked about the evolution of microfinance because Rochus was in the field and literally had a front-row seat to the evolution of this market in its earliest days. We also discussed responsAbility's strategy for managing $5 billion in investments across 70+ countries, balancing social impact with strong financial returns.Full Interview: Part 1Part 2Jonathan Maxwell, founding partner and CEO of Sustainable Development Capital LLP (SDCL)In this conversation Jonathan Maxwell presented a bold approach to climate challenges by focusing on reducing waste and maximizing efficiency. His EDGE model (Efficient and Decentralized Generation of Energy) drives resource savings across 50,000 properties worldwide. These projects support sustainability and also bring double-digit returns while cutting energy waste, showing how responsible and profitable investing can go hand in hand.Full Episode—The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing.—Connect with SRI360°:Sign up for the free weekly email updateVisit the SRI360° PODCASTVisit the SRI360° WEBSITEFollow SRI360° on XFollow SRI360° on FACEBOOK—Key Takeaways:Intro (00:00)The early days of microfinance (03:10)Founding responsAbility and rising to CEO (17:02)Impact investing philosophy (25:05)ResponsAbility – overview and mission (30:24)15+ thematic funds impacting 70+ countries (36:44)Investment process, criteria, and impact measurement (43:08)Jonathan Maxwell on sustainability (01:15:01)SDCL's mission, activities, and investment focus (01:21:21)SDCL's theory of change (01:40:39)Project portfolio & impact measurement (01:52:58)—Additional Resources:ResponsAbility WebsiteResponsAbility LinkedInRochus Mommartz LinkedIn—SDCL websiteSDCL LinkedInJonathan Maxwell LinkedInBuy The Edge by Jonathan Maxwell
Could we save billions by simply reducing energy waste? How can we power the vast, energy-hungry growth of AI without sacrificing climate goals? And is Europe doomed to high energy costs and deindustrialisation? This week on Cleaning Up, Michael Liebreich sits down with Jonathan Maxwell, CEO and founder of Sustainable Development Capital LLP (SDCL), for the third time on Cleaning Up. Jonathan shares his perspective on the urgent need to address energy efficiency and waste, drawing from the themes explored in his book "The Edge." Jonathan and Michael delve into SDCL's innovative approach to providing on-site energy solutions that deliver cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable power to businesses, industries, and public institutions. Jonathan explains how their focus on distributed generation and decentralised energy systems is transforming the way organisations think about and manage their energy needs. Finally, policy. Jonathan and Michael discuss the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act in the US (and the potential turmoil from recent election results), the European Union's Green Deal, how these initiatives can be further strengthened by a greater emphasis on energy efficiency and productivity, and what the West needs to catch China. Here's something I learned in this interview: We're wasting three-quarters of the world's energy, half of its food, and a third of its water. That's a crazy amount of lost resources! But what if, instead of just seeing this as an environmental problem, we saw it as a huge economic opportunity? The truth is, we don't need to wait for new technology, or find new resources, or produce more – we just need to use what we already have more efficiently. After all, if massive investments in renewable energy haven't significantly reduced global emissions, and fossil fuels still dominate, maybe the real issue is how we're using our resources in the first place. That's the perspective my guest this week is sharing.I'm sitting down with Jonathan Maxwell, founding partner and CEO of Sustainable Development Capital LLP (SDCL). Over the past 17 years, Jonathan has built SDCL into a leader in sustainable investing, driving projects across 50,000 properties worldwide to cut energy waste and boost efficiency. His approach is all about EDGE investing – efficient and decentralized generation of energy – which focuses on producing energy closer to where it's needed (since the majority of energy is lost before it even reaches consumers). This strategy not only makes energy consumption more sustainable, but it also helps clients cut costs and delivers double-digit returns for SDCL.At SDCL, it's not just about benefiting the environment and society – the projects have to be financially viable, too. Jonathan argues that degrowth isn't a responsible investment strategy, insisting, “If it's not commercial, it's not sustainable.”Join us as we talk about Jonathan's journey, his investment philosophy, and how SDCL's innovative strategies are transforming energy use, tackling climate change, and driving sustainable growth.Tune in now!—About the SRI 360° Podcast: The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing. At COP28 was endorsed the concept of “tripling renewables” – all good, but a lot of people forgot to mention the rest of the sentence which is “and doubling of Energy Efficiency”. In the latest IEA report, there is a 400bnUSD Energy Efficiency pie, almost at the level of Oil Upstream, and more than into Grids. Nobody talks about it. Buildings, Industrial, Transport. Electrification, Heat Pumps. So, Laurent and Gerard thought that is was time. There are very few specialist of Energy Efficiency as Jonathan Maxwell. Not only has he authored an extraordinary book called the EDGE, but he also manages Sustainable Development Capital SDCL, a multibillion Energy Efficiency fund. Efficient and decentralised generation of energy (or ‘EDGE') solutions represent the largest, fastest, cheapest, and cleanest source of greenhouse gas emission reductions and energy security. Datacenters, Lighting, Building, Heating, that's the unknown world we are going to dive into. And it is a fast growing sector. Persistent tails winds such as energy security, decarbonisation and costs are powerful drivers for a continuous expansion of that sector. We thank Aquila Capital for supporting our show

On this week's Money and Markets podcast Dan Coatsworth and Danni Hewson discuss the barrage of bad news that's been troubling markets even before US and UK central banks hiked rates. Profit warnings have been coming in thick and fast including Hilton Foods, The Hut Group, DFS and the biggie – bellwether stock FedEx, so what can investors expect as we head into another earnings season? They explore the good news for UK businesses that's come in the form of the government's six-month energy price cap out today plus they ask if travel stocks have finally turned a corner after an upbeat update from TUI. With one of the most pressing issues being discussed in boardrooms today being how to save money, Dan catches up with Jonathan Maxwell, the manager of the SDCL Energy Efficiency Income Trust. He runs an investment trust that puts money into projects that not only save companies a few quid, but also help the environment. With leaks about the new chancellors “mini-budget” coming in thick and fast, Danni looks at the boost house builders like Persimmon and Redrow have been getting from speculation that there could be intervention on stamp duty. And as one of the city's most controversial characters backing away from the board of Frasers Group, Danni and Dan discuss the career and legacy of Sports Direct Founder Mike Ashley.

Sustainable Development Capital (SDCL) has been around since 2007, always focused on the energy efficiency space and decentralised projects, with a pretty wide geographical remit active in Europe, the UK, NA and Asia).Over the years, energy efficiency as a concept has kind of become more mainstream and visible, and in 2018 SDCL went public with an energy efficiency vehicle in London, SEEIT. Its investments since listing have included all manner of energy efficiency assets – decentralised solar, CHP, LED lighting, onsite utility services, and more, all backed by long-term contracts.Maritina and Fernando sit down with founder and CEO Jonathan Maxwell to talk about how far SEEIT has come since listing, how investors' attitudes towards the asset class has changed, and importantly, how the definition of EE has evolved over time and what that means for the investment proposition.
In this episode, IGTV’s Jeremy Naylor speaks with Jonathan Maxwell, the founder and CEO of SDCL, or Sustainable Development Capital, which is the investment adviser to the SDCL Energy Efficiency Income Trust. From helping blue-chip clients to cut costs and enabling them to cut their carbon footprint, SDCL invests in sustainable power ventures in Europe and the US. With the world moving fast into an era of sustainability and in a year when the UK hosts the UN Climate Change Conference, the discussion ends in what the year may bring for the sector which, Maxwell says, offers some exciting upside as businesses are encouraged to engage more in sustainable practices. We have the world all around us, we are born into it, and we are called to minister and serve those in the world. Yet the world and its loves are also a temptation to us. Continuing on the theme of what the world is, and why we should not love worldly things, Jonathan Maxwell takes us on another angle in considering what surrounds us, and our attitude to these things. The answer is not to flee the world by isolating ourselves, and also not to surrender to its temptations, but to find grace from Christ in walking between these two places. The song mentioned at the end of this message is 'My World Needs You' by Kirk Franklin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0WRd4QTTC0
Solomon prayed for the people of God and God responded with a precious promise (2 Chronicles 6 and 7). Today, says Jonathan Maxwell, we are the temple and we are the priests. Jesus Himself is our intercessor and we have the promises in a more complete way. There are needs in the nation, in our own city and in our individual lives, says Jonathan, and no matter what is going on around us, the solution begins with us. Our prayers make a huge difference, whether or not we believe we are good pray-ers, because of the faith of Christ who prayed for us. In conclusion, Jonathan reminds the people “God has not changed. The things he did in the past, he can do today. But it starts with the individual believer – with me!”
Jonathan Maxwell brings a moving and thought provoking message, beginning with his own story of making the choice to be open and honest in all situations. Reading from the book of Hebrews, Jonathan reinforces that “as long as it is called ‘today'”, we are meant to encourage one another. God puts brokenness in our lives, says Jonathan, so that we remain dependent on Him. And there are times when our honesty in our brokenness can be of great encouragement to others. Jonathan then invites others to share their own hearts, and a great many of the people do so.

Jonathan Maxwell takes a different approach to learning about the Holocaust in his new book, MURDEROUS INTELLECTUALS, German Elites and the Nazi SS. Maxwell starts at the top. His hair-raising book gives the reader more of a concentrated view of the mindset of the Murderous Intellectuals. Who are they? How can they give the order to kill without regret? Who are the "desk murderers?" Why the Holocaust? You don't want to miss this interview with Jonathan Maxwell.
