Meet Scott FloodScott Flood established Scott Flood Writing in 1995 after 13 years with advertising agencies in Chicago and Indianapolis. The Chicago native is a frequent author on copywriting and marketing topics for business websites and publications, has authored two books of local interest, and is also the author of 100 Years: The Story of the Western States Machine Company. An active community volunteer, Scott has served on the School Board for the Plainfield Community School Corporation since 2000, was honored as Indiana's outstanding local school board member in 2021, and named Hendricks County Leader of the Year in 2007 by Leadership Hendricks County. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications & Theatre Arts from St. Joseph's College.Isn't business writing supposed to be grammatical? That's one of the great misconceptions. Let me step back and say that I absolutely love and adore English teachers. They're amazing people and anybody who can get bored sophomores to get interested in literature and poetry deserves my praise. But one of the unfortunate things that comes out of English class is that people learn a particular way to write. They learn the highly grammatical academic style of writing, which is used nowhere but the academic world. When you get out into the business world, really what's far more effective is to communicate in a more informal way, particularly a very conversational way. So I always advocate for conversational copy.Is there a simple way to tell that something I've written is conversational? I think the easiest way to do it is to read it out loud. Once we get out of grade school, we don't often read what we write out loud. But it's good practice because if you pick up something that you've written and you read it out loud, or even let's just say it's a paragraph from you're writing a blog post and you're not sure if it's doing a good job, read that paragraph out loud. If you find it's easy to read it out loud, if you find that everything comes easily, you've probably done it great. But if you find yourself stumbling or pausing or running out of breath, you probably need to rewrite. It's probably too complex for the situation. That's the easiest trick I can give people.Connect with Scott!LinkedInhttps://sfwriting.com/The Smarter Strategy for Selecting Supplierssflood@sfwriting.com

— “If you want to succeed, you must forget about a balanced life and strive towards an abundant life. This means you must work on each of the five life-building blocks consistently in order to bring them all to an abundant state where not a single one is incomplete or so compromised that it gets in the way of the others. These life-building blocks are in close relationship with each other, exactly like the organ systems in the human body. You cannot expect excellent health unless all your body systems work at a hundred percent individually and together. Poor health may start unnoticed and gradually erode your body and mind over the course of several years, just as successfully as poor relationships and poor financial intelligence will drag your long-term endeavors and lower your chances of success. It is the same exact principle across the board.” Valeria interviews Alexandra Dotcheva — She is the author of  “It Really Is Simple: A Holistic Approach To Self-Confidence: A Practical Guide.” Born and raised into a musicians' family in Bulgaria, Alexandra Dotcheva came to the United States in 2000 after earning a bachelor's degree in Music from the National Academy of Music in Sofia. She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Violin Performance from Louisiana State University in 2007.  Alexandra Dotcheva joined the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in 2006, and in 2008, prompted by the economic crisis, she decided to pursue a career in nursing at the St. Joseph's College of Nursing in Syracuse, NY. For her academic and clinical performance, she was awarded the John Trzeciak Award in 2010, and the Stella Sroka Award for Excellence in Cardiac Nursing and the Esther G. McCarty Memorial Scholarship in 2011 upon graduation. Alexandra Dotcheva has been practicing as a registered nurse since 2011, with a strong passion for educating patients on acquiring optimal health. Her nursing experience includes ICU, orthopedic trauma, and home care. In 2014, she began her investing career with a focus on rental real estate and, later on, options trading. She is the owner of three real estate businesses and a holistic coaching business. Alexandra's passion for health, martial arts, fitness, and financial independence, as well as her experience with the challenges of cultural integration prompted her to write the book, It Really Is Simple: A Holistic Approach to Self-Confidence – A Practical Guide, in which she shares her path to success in an effort to motivate readers to embrace change and pursue their dreams, in spite of fear and insecurity. Her mission is to help people overcome self-imposed limitations that prevent many from realizing their goals, finding peace of mind, and acquiring prosperity. By sharing her own journey to achieving control over the most important aspects of life, Alexandra's goal is to inspire others to turn away from various forms of fear and self-doubt and go after their dreams instead of leading lives subdued to conventional ways of thinking that have long been proven outdated, inadequate, and damaging to a person's self-esteem and self-confidence.  To learn more about Alexandra Dotcheva and her work, please visit: holisticselfconfidence.com                   — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. Bo earned undergraduate degrees from Western Connecticut State University, a master's degree from Syracuse University, and his sixth-year degree from Southern Connecticut State University. Key Takeaways: If you want to create a culture of collaboration you have to be creative in finding time to support it. You have to create templates for teachers to use if you are to maximize the time and coach them up. If you are to track the success of kids you need to break learning up into periods of time that provide data. Good instruction starts with collaborative teams. One of his chapters lines out the whole system for improved teaching and learning. You need to create systems when you don't have certified personnel that are needed. Tight loose leadership allows teachers to place the students where they're needed in a way that teachers can reach them. Reading is essential for students to improve academically. Make sure you hire people that have a high commitment to students and being good teammates regardless of years of experience. CREC calls them Associate Instructors. It's hard to create interventions when you aren't teaching skills for success and focusing on grades. Everything needs to be based on mastery of the standard. Its' critical to constantly be a learner, believe in your teachers, and continually improve. Stay Connected: Book: Brilliance in the Building

Bo Ryan is principal of the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Middle School in Hartford, CT. Ryan also served as a Principal for Woodside Intermediate School in Cromwell, CT. He is passionate about building and sustaining professional learning communities; and led both schools to Model PLC status. Ryan has been an educator for 27 years with a background as a teacher, coach, director, adjunct professor, and administrator. His first job was as a graduate assistant football coach for Syracuse University where he was a full time football coach and graduate student. He was a part of 2 bowl victories and 1 Big East Championship with the team. His teaching career began at JC Clark Elementary in the city of Hartford. In the school, Ryan created various before school and after school programs for students in the neighborhood. His daily morning gym program was open for all students an hour before school and served hundreds of students on a daily basis. Also at JC Clark, he started a basketball team in the school to help the students most at-need. The season was from October to May. Ryan also coached football, basketball, and served as director of the National Youth Sports Program at the local college during the summer. In addition, Ryan taught a graduate class at St. Joseph's College for 4 years on using PLCs as the system for creating interventions. Bo earned undergraduate degrees from Western Connecticut State University, a master's degree from Syracuse University, and his sixth-year degree from Southern Connecticut State University. Key Takeaways: It's important to recognize where we have benefited and give back. Educators have to realize that the student experience isn't always the same as their own personal experience when they were in school. We improve ourselves and make the culture better by realizing and utilizing the importance of teams. Team meetings have to be guided by a process and coached by a leader first if they are going to be effective. Tight loose leadership is key if you are to have effective PLCs in your building. It's important to focus on solutions rather than continue to highlight problems. Implement systems that change mindsets.  PLC work has to be research based. For our one-hundredth(!) podcast episode, we're releasing a very special conversation recorded at our first offsite book launch of 2022 celebrating the second volume of Moon Witch, Spider King, award-winning author Marlon James's Dark Star trilogy, his “African Game of Thrones”. In the NYT-bestselling first volume, Black Leopard, Red Wolf, Sogolon the Moon Witch proved a worthy adversary to Tracker as they clashed across a mythical African landscape in search of a mysterious boy who disappeared. Now, in Moon Witch, Spider King, James takes us deep into Sogolon's world as she fights to tell her own story, the chronicle of an indomitable woman who bows to no man. In a brilliant, hilarious, and expansive conversation with beloved Brooklyn author and commentator Isaac Fitzgerald at St. Joseph's College, James took us on an ecstatic odyssey through questions of power, personality, and whether truth is possible when the power of storytelling is available only to a select few. It's being published by Rare Bird Books to coincide with Record Store Day's 15th Anniversary.  During the interview we talked about how Record Store Day started, how the resurgence of vinyl caught the music industry by surprise, how custom releases pushed sales, and much more. I spoke with Larry via Zoom from his home in New York City. On the intro I'll take a look at how women are missing from popular music creation, and at digital drugs delivered by sound.
