After watching the Twin Towers collapse on 9/11, Noah Galloway immediately enlisted in the military at just 21 years old. Three months into his second deployment, an IED exploded, ripping apart the Humvee he was driving and nearly ending his life. He awoke five days later to find both his left arm and left leg amputated. After he finally returned home, he was overcome by a deep depression. When his marriage dissolved and he spent 10 days in county jail for a DUI, he knew he had to turn his life around. Determined to be a good role model for his children, he slowly clawed his way out of depression and into the gym to begin his mental and physical rebirth. His grit and determination began to attract media attention, landing him on the cover of Men's Health Magazine and multiple TV appearances on Ellen, The Today Show, and the military-inspired competition series American Grit. He also earned third place on Dancing With the Stars. This week on the Lead to Win Podcast, we visit with Noah Galloway. Sergeant Noah Galloway is the epitome of valor and resilience. A Purple Heart recipient and double amputee–he decided to join the military as a result of the September 11th terror attacks. Noah's incredible journey to mental and physical wellness is one that he shares in his memoir titled Living with No Excuses; the Remarkable Rebirth of an American Soldier. Those words, “No Excuses,” became Noah's mantra, as he rose out of a post-traumatic depression via his reinvigorating passion for fitness. His victories at what one would expect him to see as impossible competition and obstacle races would find Noah gaining a national spotlight. He became the first veteran and amputee to be featured on the cover of Men's Health magazine earning their “Ultimate Guy” title in 2014 and landing him on the Ellen show. Noah also became a finalist on the hit ABC show Dancing with the Stars and would win the debut season of FOX's American Grit. As a result of the honorable position he gained with a national platform, Noah wanted to give back, so he launched the No Excuses Charitable Fund, which raises money and awareness for organizations that support causes which mean the most to Noah. Now, as a fitness enthusiast and motivational public speaker, Noah shares his story to encourage audiences and his fans to embrace the “No Excuses” lifestyle on their way to an enhanced mental and physical wellness. Takeaways: Overcoming challenges and finding strength is a continuous journey. Taking ownership and leading from within are essential qualities of a leader. A positive attitude is a choice that can help overcome obstacles. Excuses are a way of avoiding responsibility. Finding a purpose and something bigger than fear can motivate and inspire. Failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. Adapting to change and finding purpose are important in life. Welcome back for Episode 50! What an unbelievable journey it’s been, and I promise you, we’re only just getting started. For everyone that has listened, supported and interacted, we are eternally grateful and we couldn’t have picked a better group of people to share this journey with. Stick around, because I assure you, things are growing fast. On today’s episode, we are joined by American War-hero, best-selling author and previous star from the hit show Dancing with the stars Noah Galloway. After Noah witnessed 9/11 happen, he felt so passionately about it that he immediately dropped out of college and went straight to the front lines. It was during his second deployment, that his Humvee caught a tripwire and blew his vehicle up, leaving him within inches of life. The aftermath of this explosion saw Noah as an amputee losing his left arm and his left leg. Overcoming the loss of two limbs wasn’t the only issue that Noah had to deal with. Since returning home, Noah has done multiple rounds in the ring with depression which he speaks so openly about and he’s spent 10 days in a county jail for a DUI. Determined to not let this be his life, Noah completely reinvented himself and found solace in fitness. Noah decided to change his life, and since he made the decision he has run marathons, tough mudders, featured on the cover of Mens Health, appeared on Ellen, The today show and more notably he scored a 3-rd place finish on Dancing with the stars. We were so intrigued by Noah’s story we wanted to find out what drives him, how he has managed depression and what we can do to reframe a negative set-back, which I assure you, is a huge component of success. As always, if you enjoyed the show all that we ask is that you leave us a rating and review. It helps us so much with the visibility of the show. Also, if you want to reach out to us if you’re struggling with anything in your life - please send us an email: freedompact@gmail.com. We love hearing from you guys, and we read every email. Sergeant Noah Galloway was assigned to the 1st of the 502nd Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Just three months into his second tour of duty, he experienced a life-changing injury. On December 19, 2005, Galloway lost his left arm above the elbow and left leg above the knee in an Improvised Explosive Device attack. He was transported to Germany to receive medical treatment, remaining unconscious for five days. Galloway woke up late in the evening on Christmas Eve to learn he lost two of his limbs and sustained severe injuries to his right leg and his jaw. Galloway was then transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. After a long stint in recovery and rehabilitation, Galloway did what many disabled veterans do, becoming withdrawn, out of shape and depressed. The former fitness fanatic and hyper-competitive athlete was now drinking, smoking and sleeping his days away. But late one night, Galloway took a long look in the mirror and realized there was more to him than the injuries. And he set a goal to get back in shape, be healthier and inspire others. Now a fitness expert and motivational speaker, Galloway doesn’t take excuses from his clients, fans, and followers – and finds ways to get things done. He continues to compete, participating in adventure races around the country, such as Tough Mudder, Spartan events, fitness competitions plus numerous 5Ks, 10Ks and marathons. A sought-after public speaker, Galloway travels the country sharing his story, encouraging and motivating others to offer no excuses. From elementary school assemblies to veterans organizations to corporate sales meetings, Galloway’s enthusiasm for life and his passion for helping others brings a unique perspective to gatherings. Most recently, Galloway led his team to victory on FOX’s new hit series American Grit, where teams were tested with various military challenges. He also took third place in Season 20 of ABC’s hit series, Dancing With The Stars. Following his appearance on the November cover of Men’s Health Magazine, he was named the publication’s 2014 Ultimate Guy. He’s also been a guest on numerous national talk shows including Ellen and The Today Show.

The past couple episodes have focused on courage. In today's episode I am going to highlight the key points from the conversations I had with Justin Constantine and Noah Galloway. I'll also share some of my thoughts on courage and what it means to me. We all have the skills and ability to overcome the greatest adversity and most difficult challenges... if we choose to. You are stronger than you think you are. Depression has no reason, depression is real, and depression can strike anyone. You can be the most powerful person on the planet and depression can still affect you. It takes both strength and courage to overcome depression, but that process starts by acknowledging that you are vulnerable. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable, no one else can make you vulnerable. Sometimes being courageous simply means talking to someone or seeking help. You are special. You are created for greatness. You are courageous. Go out and make an impact by encouraging someone today – by adding to their heart – even if that someone happens to be you. Today we're learning more about courage with Noah Galloway, a former U.S. Army soldier, motivational speaker, and author of Living with No Excuses: The Remarkable Rebirth of an American Soldier. Growing up, Noah's father worked construction with only one hand. It was a powerful inspiration that ended up affecting him more than he ever expected. During the Iraq War, Noah lost his left arm and leg. “Someone is going to read Living With No Excuses and see that they are not alone. Whatever they are going through, they can get through it, get some help, and see there's a light at the end of the tunnel.” He struggled with depression and denial for a few years before embracing physical activity again. He started running marathons and, in 2014, he was named the Ultimate Men's Health Guy. He spoke on The Ellen Degeneres Show, The Today Show, and came in 3rd place on Dancing With The Stars. Noah's run on Dancing With The Stars highlights the power of mindset. You have the ability to overcome any obstacle that is presented to you. “I was glazing over the depression part. I felt like it was unrealistic to people to lose two limbs, have all those things happen to you, and then make it on the cover of the world's largest men's magazine and go on Dancing With The Stars. Not having that piece of the puzzle didn't make sense with me and I wanted to share that.” War is full of obstacles, but writing Living With No Excuses was an obstacle too. Sharing your most difficult experiences and making yourself vulnerable requires incredible courage, but it is so important. In Living With No Excuses, Noah emphasizes that struggle is universal. No experience “earns you the right” to be depressed. Depression can happen to anyone. “Depression is real and can strike anyone. You can be the most powerful person on the planet but depression can still affect you.”   Don't be a podcast junkie… Resources: Connect with Noah: Facebook | Twitter Living with No Excuses: The Remarkable Rebirth of an American Soldier by Noah Galloway Watch Noah dance on Dancing With The Stars   -- We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group. On December 19, 2005, Noah Galloway was driving the lead truck in a small convoy when his vehicle was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Iraq's "Triangle of Death."  Taking the brunt of the blast, Galloway was severely injured and ended up losing his left arm and leg.  The loss of two limbs devastated the former standout athlete and fitness guru.  So much so that it sent him into a downward spiral of excessive drinking and depression.  Noah eventually hit rock bottom, and when he did, he rebounded with zeal and surpassed the image of what he once was.  Noah looked beyond his darkest moment and his injuries, and fought to get himself back into excellent physical shape, eventually becoming a competitive adventure race athlete, personal trainer, author, and motivational speaker.  He was even named the 2014 Ultimate Men's Health Guy by Men's Health magazine, gracing the cover of that year's November issue.  Noah's story is one of resiliency and inspiration, and one that many to this day draw strength from.  This is one account of combat and survival you don't want to miss!  www.noahgalloway.com @noahgallowayathlete @Noah_Galloway Living With No Excuses: The Remarkable Rebirth of an American Soldier

Noah Galloway is a veteran who sustained injuries in an IED attack on his second deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005. He lost two of his limbs and sustained severe injuries to his right leg and his jaw. Like many disabled veterans, Galloway became withdrawn, out of shape and depressed. The former fitness fanatic and athlete was drinking, smoking, and sleeping his days away. But late one night, Galloway realized that there was more to him than the injuries. He walked out of his room realizing that he was setting the example for his boys of what a man is. And for his little girl, the example of how a man should act and it terrified him. He needed to make a change, and he needed to do it fast. He joined a 24-hour gym and started eating right. He participated in obstacle races and adventure races around the country, such as Tough Mudder, Spartan events, Crossfit competitions plus numerous 5K and 10K races. Now a personal trainer and motivational speaker, Galloway doesn’t take excuses from his clients, fans, or followers – and finds ways to get things done. Galloway was a season 20 participant of Dancing With The Stars, in which he took third place following his appearance on the cover of Men's Health Magazine and numerous other publications. Most recently Noah joined WWE Superstar John Cena and three other veterans on American Grit, a military-inspired show on the Fox Network that splits 16 of the toughest men and women into four teams as they work together to face survival challenges. It's Galloway's job to push his team of civilians to work together and to go beyond their limits. The show airs Thursday, April 14th at 9/8 central on Fox.
