Today's crossword was a debut for Gene Louise De Vera, so a few lusty "huzzahs" would not be out of place. The grid had some interesting features: we liked the the juxtaposition of 39D, Children's author Asquith, ROS, and 40D, "Hel-l-lp!", SOS. We were pleased to see the presence of 19A, "The Gift of the Magi" writer, OHENRY, and had hoped to also see OHHENRY, the chocolate bar, but we'll settle for a small glass of 48D, Dessert drink made with frozen grapes, ICEWINE.All in all, a fine crossword, and we give it a 5 squares on the JAMCR scale.Besides the crossword, we also have a spot of delightful listener mail, so check it out!Show note imagery: MARA Rooney, in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. We love feedback! Dana Edwards has written two NYTimes crosswords, and both have been uniformly excellent. This one had an ingenious theme to it (not that his first was a slouch, but this one just had a little extra sparkle), and the clueing was particularly tricky (i.e., great!). There's simply no other way to describe 53D, Kind of place that's beside the point?, ONES (nice!); 54A, Random number generator, DIE (duh!); and 19A, Valley in which it's easy to get a cab, NAPA (brilliant!).It's also Tuesday, time for our Triplet Tuesday segment, and Jean gives a quick demo of why, when she's in the zone and in the grid, she is, in the words of Sia, unstoppable.Show note imagery: REO Speedwagon (the vehicle, not the band)We love feedback! This was a fun, frothy Monday crossword by Ailee Yoshida, her second for the NYTimes. The theme was (as always) ingenious, and, being a Monday, the grid was populated with words that we mainly know. It did have two debut answers (19A, Tidbit in a nutritious pudding: CHIASEED; 23A, Department handling media inquiries: PRESSOFFICE) and one not seen since 1984, 43D, Lip-plumping injection, FILLER. For the record, in 1984 FILLER had no connection, whatsoever, with Lips.Show note imagery: A WRIT, writ large
Ecclesiastes 9:13-11:8 13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, Wisdom is better than strength. But the poor mans wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded. 17The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools.18Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good. 10:1 As dead flies give perfume a bad smell, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.2The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.3Even as fools walk along the road, they lack sense and show everyone how stupid they are.4If a rulers anger rises against you, do not leave your post; calmness can lay great offenses to rest. 5There is an evil I have seen under the sun, the sort of error that arises from a ruler:6Fools are put in many high positions, while the rich occupy the low ones.7I have seen slaves on horseback, while princes go on foot like slaves. 8Whoever digs a pit may fall into it; whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.9Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them; whoever splits logs may be endangered by them. 10If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success. 11If a snake bites before it is charmed, the charmer receives no fee. 12Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious, but fools are consumed by their own lips.13At the beginning their words are folly; at the end they are wicked madness14 and fools multiply words. No one knows what is coming who can tell someone else what will happen after them? 15The toil of fools wearies them; they do not know the way to town. 16Woe to the land whose king was a servant and whose princes feast in the morning.17Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth and whose princes eat at a proper time for strength and not for drunkenness. 18Through laziness, the rafters sag; because of idle hands, the house leaks. 19A feast is made for laughter, wine makes life merry, and money is the answer for everything. 20Do not revile the king even in your thoughts, or curse the rich in your bedroom, because a bird in the sky may carry your words, and a bird on the wing may report what you say.Invest in Many Ventures 11:1 Ship your grain across the sea; after many days you may receive a return.2Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. 3If clouds are full of water, they pour rain on the earth.Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there it will lie.4Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. 5As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mothers womb,so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things. 6Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.Remember Your Creator While Young 7Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.8However many years anyone may live, let them enjoy them all.But let them remember the days of darkness, for there will be many. Everything to come is meaningless.

Si prestas mucha atención, Jesús te ayudará a tomar buenas decisiones y te sentirás feliz.Joelle.

A fine Friday crossword by Adrian Johnson, his 5th NYTimes Crossword contribution. Considering that 39A, Pub ________, TRIVIA, was one of the answers, it should not be surprising that quite a few factoids made their way into the grid. For example ... 19A, Novelist whose "Little Fires Everywhere" became a #1 best seller, CELESTENG (parsed as Celeste Ng, with the "Ng" being pronounced as "ing"). We also had 21A, Bird whose largest species is called the Goliath. HERON; and 46A, Romanian philosopher Cioran, EMIL. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.Proverbs 6:16-19There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.Proverbs 12:19Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.Proverbs 19:19A man of great anger will bear the penalty [for his quick temper and lack of self-control]; For if you rescue him [and do not let him learn from the consequences of his action], you will only have to rescue him over and over again.Proverbs 19:9A false witness will not go unpunished, and whoever pours out lies will perish.Proverbs 21:6A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare.1 Timothy 2:1-4I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.'Deal with the devil': Evangelical pastor testifies about bargain Christian conservatives made with GOP. Brad Reed December 8, 2022, 4:44 PM EThttps://www.rawstory.com/robert-schenck-testimony-video/ Former Anti-Abortion Lobbyist Rev Robert Schenck Statement on "Operation Higher Court"https://www.c-span.org/video/?524567-1/hearing-politics-supreme-courtReverend Schenck was a prominent activist in the pro-life movement before 2019 and cited the Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade as part of an unequal exchange between Christians and politicians. Schenck later repudiated his anti-abortion position and has preached in more than 40 countries since 1982, including every state in the US.The Rev. Robert Schenck, who was once a prominent anti-abortion activist, testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday that he and his fellow conservative Christians made a Faustian bargain with the Republican Party as part of their quest to overturn Roe v. Wade. During his testimony, Schenck described a meeting he and his fellow evangelicals had with Republican operatives in which they were told that, in order to get what they wanted with Roe, they would have to accept and promote an entire package of right-wing policies that they otherwise might have found objectionable."In that meeting that I participated in, the conversation went something like this: ‘You guys want Roe v. Wade overturned, we can do that for you, but you take the whole enchilada, you take the whole thing,”‘ he said. “You take everything else that comes with it. Because if you want Roe gone, you have to work with us.” ( Rev. Robert Schenck).Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/622a9079e8fb640012cb94f3. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: KFC Supplier Sued for Cruelty, published by alene on May 24, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Dear EA Forum readers, The EA charity, Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC), just filed our second lawsuit! As many of you know, LIC is a litigation nonprofit dedicated to making factory-farm cruelty a liability. We focus on chickens because of the huge numbers in which they suffer and the extreme severity of that suffering. Today, we sued one of the country's largest poultry producers and a KFC supplier, Case Farms, for animal cruelty. The complaint comes on the heels of a 2021 undercover investigation by Animal Outlook, revealing abuse at a Morganton, N.C. Case Farms hatchery that processes more than 200,000 chicks daily. Our lawsuit attacks the notion that Big Ag is above the law. We are suing under North Carolina's 19A statute, which lets private parties enjoin animal cruelty. Case Farms was documented knowingly operating faulty equipment, including a machine piston which repeatedly smashes chicks to death and a dangerous metal conveyor belt which traps and kills young birds. Case Farms was also documented crushing chicks' necks between heavy plastic trays. Case Farms supplies its chicken to KFC, Taco Bell, and Boar's Head, among other customers. Thank you so much to all the EA Forum readers who helped make this happen, by donating to, and volunteering for, Legal Impact for Chickens! Sincerely, Alene Thanks for listening. Possessions are great, but peace is better. In this message, Lead Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares how we can overcome greed. 1 John 2:16 "For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure (lust of the flesh), a craving for everything we see (thelust of the eyes), and pride in our achievements and possessions (the prideof life). These are not from the Father but are from this world."Lust, Greed, and Pride are the three traps the enemy has set for us in this world. Or, feel more, have more, be more. But God is saying "I am more than enough." Greed is an unhealthy pursuit of money, wealth and possessions. Greed is more than you need. The world says you have "money problems" when you don't have money. The Bible says you have "money problems" when money has you.Three things the bible says about greed:Greed can derail your walk with Christ.1 Tim 6:9-10 "But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows."How do you know if you love money? If you're willing to depart from your convictions to get it. Greed focuses your heart on the wrong thing.Luke 12:15,21 "... Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God."It's foolish to save money and not save your soul.Greed changes our focus from the eternal to the temporary. You don't want to have a full living room, but an empty life. Greed will never be satisfied, and greed will never satisfy you.Ecclesiastes 5:10Once created, an appetite doesn't go away, it grows stronger. How to defeat greed:1 Timothy 6:17-19 1. Don't be proud.Psalm 49:6-7"They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches. Yet they cannot redeemthemselves from death by paying a ransom to God." 2. Don't trust in money.Psalm 20:7"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God." 3. Enjoy!Ecclesiastes 5:19A greedy person can't enjoy anything because they always have their eye on the next thing. The cure for greed is not less stuff, but more Jesus. 4. Do good.2 Corinthians 9:8Be a helper, not a hoarder. 5. Store up treasure in heaven.Luke 12:33If you gather here, you store up here; if you give it here, you store up there. Your home in heaven will be furnished with what you gave on earth.Instead of accumulating more stuff, accumulate good works. Are you caught in the world's trap of greed?

Although the title of today's crossword was With Ease, that's not how your intrepid cohosts solved it: rather, the clue for 19A, My ________ (You're never gonna get it), 1992 hit by En Vogue, seemed a more accurate premonition as as they both (solving independently, as always) flailed around in the top-left corner. But fortunately, diving into their memory palace (Jean) and guessing letters totally at random (Mike), they were eventually both able to dispel the FANTODS on their way to victory. And in case you're wondering, yes, FANTODS really is a word, we cover it today, and we are in love with it!Our Triplet Tuesday contest winners will be announced this Tuesday - if you haven't already, there is still time to enter -- just check out last Tuesday's episode for the rules, and may the best solver win!Contact Info:We love listener mail!
