The disturbing origin of oft-quoted religious narratives of "gendered souls".To watch this on video and for full access to notes and resources, go tohttps://shirabatya.substack.com/trans-biblical-characters-in-jewish2To watch part 1 (recommended), go tohttps://shirabatya.substack.com/p/trans-biblical-characters-in-jewish1“Queer” teachers such as Abby Stein have sought religious foundations in Judaism for the idea of true trans - that some people are born in the wrong body, with the soul of the opposite sex. They do this by appealing to narratives in Lurianic Kabbalah to do with reincarnation, and by projecting trans identities onto biblical personalities such as Joseph, Dinah, Isaac, and Michal. Such narratives have been promoted by organisations such as Keshet (the American Jewish LGBT charity, whose judgment in promoting these texts must be questioned).I have explored the texts behind these arguments, including quite a bit of halacha (Jewish legal texts) to do with Michal's tefillin. This quest took me on a very dark journey that ended with homophobia, misogyny and an accusation of witchcraft.Warning: You will be offended! This is the second half of a recording of a Zoom shiur (lecture) that I gave on Sunday 23 February. This is a more in depth and uncensored version of a similar session that I gave at Limmud Festival in December 2024 with a slightly different title. In Part 1, we explored the background to these narratives and the link with gender identity ideology, and I discussed the narratives relating to Dinah, Joseph, and Isaac. We discovered that far from being transgender, Isaac is understood to have been an immature boy with a “female soul” who matured into a proper man who could give his wife children. We ended Part 1 on the question of what the “soul” really means in these narratives, and whether Judaism is really compatible with the soul / body or mind / body dichotomy inherent in the idea of a “gender” separate from sex. Here in Part 2, we explore the complex case of Michal. The legend that she wore tefillin will lead us on a journey through the halachah (Jewish legal texts) to do with women and tefillin, and finally to the same text from Chayim Vital that Abby Stein credited for inspiring Stein's transition when interviewed in 2019. Unorthodox? Abby Stein's journey & challenges, a transgender woman, excommunicated from her NY ultra-Orthodox community
We explore the interplay of faith, spirituality and LGBTQ+ identity in this special episode for Pride Month 2022. We hear three fascinating cross-cultural and religious conversations between people who are also LGBTQ+. Furgie was raised a Muslim as a child in Pakistan. He speaks to Sukhdeep, a gay Sikh man in India. Abby Stein left her strict Hasidic Jewish community and transitioned but she is still very much Jewish. Abby talks to Claire who is a 73-year-old trans woman from the UK. Finally two African queer women explore their relationship with religion - one as a Christian and the other as Muslim growing up in Kenya. Producer: Nina Robinson and Josie LeVay
We're still working on a new season of Radicals & Revolutionaries Lab for your listening pleasure, but while you wait, why not revisit some old favorites? We're proud to re-air this episode as we look back on the roots of this show. For pennies a day, you can become a patron of the Radicals & Revolutionaries Lab podcast and join a growing global movement of feminist badasses dedicated to radically authentic, intentional, and interconnected feminism. If you've been secretly dreaming of joining our community, now is the time baby. Go to ContinuumCollective.org for more.___________________________________________________________________________________________________Joining us this week on the Radicals & Revolutionaries Lab is Abby Stein, an exceptional author, rabbi, educator, activist, and parent (with a particular distaste for bios). Our host, Jillian Foster, speaks with Abby about her explosion of educational events over the last year, involving 200+ virtual talks and an upcoming theatrical production based on her book & life. This episode digs into that and more as Abby talks about being segregated from the outside world at a young age, her second book about living out & proud, the impact of passing privilege, and her love for cooking her mother's recipes with a modern twist. Abby's work and this conversation is a powerful tribute to those who have experienced what it's like to leave and mourn a fundamentalist environment in an effort to find a greater, more true existence.Connect with Abby:Instagram: @abbychavasteinTwitter: @abbychavasteinFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/AbbysteinASJoin our movement for radically authentic, intentional, interconnected feminism inside Continuum Collective. "I don't understand," they say, and now you've got some work to do. Listener Kai asks how to explain what nonbinary means to their boyfriend's religious parents. Luckily, Faith knows how to talk to religious people so you know The Gender Rebels have some thoughts. Checkout our episodes with our nonbinary friend Avery: Everything In Between and Nonbinary Talk With Avery. A nonbinary person is not necessarily intersex, but Avery said it can be a helpful metaphor to people who prefer to start from a scientific example. Check out our intersex episode for details. Faith is a fan of Sci Show and they also have an episode on intersex people. Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman by Abby Stein is just one of many stories from religious or formerly religious people dealing with queerness, transition, or being nonbinary or intersex. Also it's just a great read. We love Austen Hartke and he has done so much fascinating work on queer interpretations of the bible. Check out his book Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians if that YouTube clip piqued your interest. Did you attend or watch the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney last night?I spoke to a very special lady who came from New York to the Mardi Gras two years ago, her name is Abby Stein. Abby told me her remarkable journey from a Hassidic boy to a girl. I am going to share the story again with you today. (in Hebrew)
'I prayed to God to make me a girl'. James and Dan are joined from New York by Abby Stein - the first woman and the first transgender woman to be ordained as a rabbi by an orthodox institution. She talks about her life growing up in a strict community, coming out - first as non-religious and again as transgender - and offers a ray of hope to LGBTQ+ people trapped by orthodox institutions. Abby is the first openly transgender woman raised in a Hasidic community, this is her story. For more information on leaving orthodox communities visit Footsteps.org (USA) and Mavar.org (UK). This week, Phill has a question on his mind -- is it okay to hate Trump? In a week in which Trump nominated a conservative judge to the Supreme Court, defended paying only $750 in taxes and gave orders to white supremacists during the Presidential debate, Phill asks Reverend Broderick Greer and Abby Stein, an ordained rabbi, how they process their feelings towards Trump. They talk through their philosophies of forgiveness and the responsibility of standing up against Trump. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this episode, Tyler talks with Abby Stein, a Jewish educator, writer, speaker, and activist. She was born and raised in a Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, isolated in a culture that lives according to the laws and practices of eighteenth-century Eastern Europe, speaking only Yiddish and Hebrew and shunning modern life. Abby was born as the first son in a dynastic rabbinical family, poised to become a leader of the next generation of Hasidic Jews. But Abby felt certain at a young age that she was a girl. She suppressed her desire for a new body while looking for answers wherever she could find them, from forbidden religious texts to smuggled secular examinations of faith. Finally, she orchestrated a personal exodus from ultra-Orthodox manhood to mainstream femininity -- a radical choice that forced her to leave her home, her family, her way of life. In 2012, she left the Hasidic world, and In 2015 she came out as a woman of trans experience. Since coming out, she has been working to raise support and awareness for trans rights and those leaving Ultra-Orthodoxy. Her story has been covered all over the world, including in the New York Times, New York Post, New York Magazine, and Vogue. She’s also made live appearances on CNN, NBC, ShowTime, and NowThis, just to name a few. Today she lives in New York City, now a graduate of Columbia University, and an English speaker, her 4th language. They chat about her beautiful book, Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman, her life while in the Hasidic community, how she creatively rebelled against it until she eventually left, and how she acclimatized to a new life. Have you watched Unorthodox on Netflix? I will talk about this miniseries today that took the world by storm and will bring you an interview with a very unorthodox lady, Abby Stein a transgender lady raised in the Chassidic ultra-Orthodox community in New York and her unique journey (Hebrew interview)
In a very special season finale episode, trans activist, educator, and author Abby Stein ("Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman") talks with Rabbi Mosbacher about LGTBQ Pride as "a very Jewish thing" (even the Talmud may have things to say about it!). Ms. Stein, born as the first son in a dynastic rabbinical family, poised to be a Hasidic leader, examines how leaving the Ultra-Orthodox community and rejecting her faith entirely allowed her to come back to her faith in a years-long renewal that's allowed her a richer realization of her own faith experience, and a new love for Jewish traditional texts. She reflects on discussions with LGBTQ people still living within the Orthodox community today, and shares her thoughts on the Hasidic community ever possibly accepting LGBTQ folks. Importantly, Ms. Stein also shares how people who aren't trans can support the trans community as allies. Rabbi Mosbacher also offers happiest Pride wishes and addresses the need for our continued support for the African American community and the Black Lives Matter (#BLM) movement, posing some very important questions we must all ask ourselves at this juncture in history. Chag sameach and Pride sameach! This episode was executive produced by Kirsten Major and produced and edited by Josh Walker. Thank you for being with us for our inaugural season! We invite you to like, comment, and share us with friends, and we look forward to seeing you this fall for season two
Until she was about 20 years old, Abby Stein didn't know the term "transgender," let alone know that other transgender people existed. In this episode, we dive into the life of Abby Stein, a transgender author, activist, and former rabbi. Abby takes listeners into her home in a conservative Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, New York. Engaged by the age of 18 to a woman she barely knew, Abby's raw and impassioned account helps us understand the complexity of living as one's authentic self. In this episode we discuss LGBTQ+ advocacy, human rights abuses, and violations based on sexual orientation, and the importance of asking questions and creating spaces to discuss diversity and inclusion. Abby Stein - Becoming Eve...with TRE's Selina Mackenzie

The Koffler is thrilled to present the Toronto launch of Abby Stein’s Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman. Abby will be joined in conversation by Rev. Jeff Rock, Senior Pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, Toronto’s LGBTQ2+ Church. Trans activist Abby Stein was raised in a Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, isolated in a culture that lives according to the laws and practices of eighteenth-century Eastern Europe. As the first son in a dynastic rabbinical family, Abby was poised to become a leader of the next generation of Hasidic Jews. However, from a young age, Abby felt certain that she was a girl. In her groundbreaking memoir Becoming Eve: My Journey From Ultra- Orthodox Rabbi To Transgender Woman, Abby traces her extraordinary coming-out story, from suppressing her desire for a new body, to looking for answers in forbidden religious texts, to orchestrating her final exodus from ultra-Orthodox manhood to mainstream femininity – a radical choice that forced her to leave home, her family and way of life. Powerful in the truths it reveals about biology, culture, faith, and identity, Becoming Eve poses the enduring question: How far will you go to become the person you were meant to be? kofflerarts.org

Abby Stein is an American transgender author, activist, blogger, model, rabbi, and speaker; she is the first openly transgender woman raised in a Hasidic community. In this episode, Abby discusses her extraordinary journey of self-discovery and self-fulfillment within the context of her fundamentalist roots: by taking a 180 degree turn and deconstructing the circle, she was able to take its parts to build a new circle - and move on authentically. Abby highlights the need for society to evolve from just tolerating to actively celebrating identity, the power of community, both the one you’re forced into by circumstance and the one you choose, and finding ways to describe everything in life as beautiful. CODEPINK's Ariel Gold and Teri Mattson discuss Jewish activism from the US-Mexico border to Palestine. How do people become activists and human rights defenders? Our first guest is Carolyn Karcher, editor of Reclaiming Judaism from Zionism, discusses that an increasing number of Jews are learning the truth behind Zionist ideology, which has degraded the Jewish religion. The ethics of Judaism are based on pursuing justice, love thy neighbors and repair the world. Yet, none of these are followed by Israelis to Palestinians. Recognizing that Israel is committing war crimes under the facade of Jewish identity, Jews are grappling with this and renouncing Zionism. In her book, Carolyn collects stories to change hearts and minds, starting with Rabbis explaining Zionism's harmful beliefs and to reconstruct Judaism by going back to ethical principles. Next, Carolyn takes us through the imperialistic and nationalistic history of Zionism starting before WWII. Does Israel represent Jewishness?Visitors to Israel don’t see behind the apartheid wall. Ariel and Carolyn discuss the transformative experience of visiting Hebron, the epicenter of the occupation. Israel blatantly attempts to blind the realities of what is truly happening in Palestine. They turned a religion that was built on loving thy neighbor into a religion of hate Our second guest, Abby Stein, author of Becoming Eve. She discusses the similarities between Auschwitz and the current actions taken by ICE at the Southern Border. These similarities launched the Never Again movement, which points out society’s short term memory and to look at world atrocities through the lens that legal governments could persuade an entire society that millions of people are the source of their problems, by convincing them that we can get rid of them and everything will be great. Never Again asks us to remember that this did not happen that long ago in Germany.

Abby Stein, an activist, speaker, and author, presents her Valley Beit Midrash lecture "The Intersectionality of Gender and Jewish Identity" before an audience at Congregation Beth Israel (www.cbiaz.org/) in Scottsdale, AZ. ABOUT THIS LECTURE: For generations, many Jews saw gender within Judaism as black and white, male and female, with no place for fluidity. Until today, ultra-Orthodox communities ignore the existence of gender diversity within Jewish tradition. However, Judaism is rich and full with gender diversity. This session will explore different approaches within primary Jewish texts, from the creation story, the several genders of the Talmud, to transgender theory within Kabbalah, with real-life examples. We've come a long way in recognizing that transgender people exist, with trans rights openly discussed on TV, in the news and in the halls of government. But imagine if you didn't have access to mainstream television, movies, or even news. Abby Stein was raised as a boy in a Hasidic community in Brooklyn, and became a rabbi before eventually deciding to leave her closed community and come out as trans.
April Baskin, Yavilah McCoy, and Abby Stein, the three Jewish members of The Women’s March steering committee, join Dan Libenson and Lex Rofeberg for a conversation about intersectionality, coalition-building, and embodiment — and how all three of those key concepts served a key role in the success of the second annual Women’s March. Podcast guest Abby Stein has a truly incredible story: she was once a Hasidic man living as a rabbi in the Ultra-Orthodox epicenter of Williamsburg, New York who has now found freedom and truth in her new life as an openly transgender woman. She reminisces about growing up surrounded by her devout parents and 12 siblings in their extremely insular community. Abby only has her memories now, as her difficult life decision caused her family to cut all ties. She is currently based in Manhattan and studies at Columbia University, but travels around the nation to share her personal journey and advocate for the rights of transgender individuals everywhere. Don’t miss her honest and inspiring story! Also, be sure to check out InStyle’s article about her: Meet the Hasidic Rabbi Who Realized She Was Transgender Thanks to a Google Search.
Abby is a transgender activist who's impact across communities in 2016 landed her as one of Jewish Week's 36 under 36 emerging Jewish leaders. Growing up and being raised as a man in a Hasidic community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Abby struggled fitting into an identity that ultimately didn't match the person she knew she could be. Today, Abby is a major trans-rights activist and also a supporter for individuals moving out of ultra-orthodox and other fundamentalist societies. A growing icon in progressive circles, Abby's story has been featured in major publications including Haaretz, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.
A conversation with Abby Stein, a transgender activist and former Satmar hasid. Abby talks about her upbringing, leaving her community, and her life ever since.
Three gruesome incidents in two years: Tuscon, Arizona; Aurora, Colorado; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Many Americans wonder whether our society is sadly prone to these acts of evil, since there have been at least 60 of them since 1982. Were the murderers mad, or bad, or a combustible mixture of both? Join host Stephen Handelman, Director of the Center on Media, Crime and Justice, as he discusses this topic with two of the country's foremost experts on extreme criminal violence: Abby Stein, Associate Professor at John Jay College and author of, “Prologue to Violence,” and Dr. Michael Stone, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University who specializes in personality disorders. He is the author of, “The Anatomy of Evil” and on Discovery Channel’s show titled, “Most Evil,” he examines the criminal mind. Also joining the conversation will be legal journalist and former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney, Robin Barton who will explore how the media covers these tragic events.
