This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're exploring the deadly consequences of youthful indiscretions and the relentless pursuit of past sins. We'll be comparing the American slasher sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) and the German horror flick Party Hard, Die Young (2018). I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) Directed by Danny Cannon, this sequel to the 1997 hit follows Julie James and her friends as they take a seemingly relaxing vacation to a remote island resort. However, their past actions come back to haunt them when the vengeful fisherman returns, picking them off one by one in a tropical paradise turned deadly trap. Party Hard, Die Young (2018) Directed by Dominik Hartl, this German slasher film takes the familiar "teens in peril" trope to a vibrant and chaotic Croatian music festival. What starts as a wild party under the sun turns gruesome when a masked killer begins targeting the young revelers, turning their hedonistic escape into a fight for survival. Join us as we dissect these two tales of youthful terror and relentless pursuit. We'll discuss how each film utilizes its unique setting to amplify the horror, the effectiveness of their respective killers, and how they explore the themes of guilt, consequence, and the inescapable nature of the past. Get ready for sun, sand, and a whole lot of bloodshed! Spoilers start around 8:25.

Rosehips are famous for their vitamin C content, but as herbalist Julie James will tell you, “[Vitamin C] is the least sexy part of rose hips.” That's because rosehips are filled with so many benefits that go way beyond vitamin C! For example, we'll share how one of its most underrated gifts is for modulating inflammation. In this episode, you'll hear all about rosehips, plus you'll get Julie's yummy Rosehip Electuary recipe. Imagine having a spoonful of this super-easy sweet treat every day, knowing that as it melts in your mouth you're getting vitamin C and other rosehips nutrients. In case you're not already familiar with her, Julie is the owner of Green Wisdom Herbs in Long Beach, CA, a full service herb shop and school, where she has cultivated an herbal community dedicated to improving access to healing plants and to reliable herbal information. She teaches classes in person and sometimes online, with her primary focus being her 2 year herbal apprenticeship, through which she has sent hundreds of new herbalists into the world. Having spent over 30 years as an herbalist, she delights in sharing her love of plants by combining science and magic, awe and intellect, and by encouraging folks to get their hands dirty, bodies nourished, bellies filled, and minds blown. Listen in for: ► Why ingesting the whole plant gives you the most benefits ► Why an electuary can be an ideal (not to mention delicious) way to receive all that rose hips have to offer ► Why you might want to buy rose hips already cut and sifted, rather than growing and harvesting your own Show snippet: “I always feel like I'm missing something in a tea because I'm not ingesting the whole plant.” ---- Get full show notes including a transcript of this episode at: http://herbswithrosaleepodcast.com/ (herbswithrosaleepodcast.com) For more behind-the-scenes of this podcast, follow https://www.instagram.com/rosaleedelaforet/ (@rosaleedelaforet) on Instagram! This week, we're talking about a beloved contemporary romance, the first in Julie James's FBI/US Attorney series — Something About You. This one is a fascinating look at a series connected by not the romance standard of friends or families, but by work. Set in Chicago, it contains all the mystery of a romantic suspense without ever straying from the contemporary romance path. The characters are sharp, the writing is clever, the structure is fascinating, and it will likely make you read the rest of the series almost immediately. Thanks to Avon Books, publisher of Lynsay Sands's Immortal Rising, and Kelly Cain, author of An Acquired Taste, for sponsoring the episode.Show NotesJulie James is the author of 9 books in the FBI/US Attorney series. They are stand alone novels in the world of the Chicago criminal justice system. The Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook has a lap pool with lane lines in case you're into that sort of thing. The U.S. Attorneys are federal prosecutors and there are 94 districts. Saying out each letter separately “A-U-S-A” is in fact the right way to shorten this title. Jen confirmed it with Erin. The Peninsula is a fancy hotel in Chicago. Jen is unsure of whether or not it has a lap pool. Vocation vs Career vs a bunch of other things.“Taste her blood in her throat” as someone (ahem, Nora Roberts) might say. You definitely want to see that scene Jen referenced from The Old Guard with Nicky & Joe. Unfortunately, Channing Tatum's stirring defense of romance in The Lost City is not yet available on YouTube. Trailblazer episodes continue this week with EE Ottoman, the first out trans author of romance novels. EE joins us to talk about his journey into romance, about the evolution of trans romance novels, and about the importance of representation in romance. This is a fascinating conversation, and we're so grateful to EE for joining us to tell his story, and the story of trans romance to date. An important note: While books by LGBTQ+ authors have been targeted by book bans across the country for decades, the recent bans on books and language around queerness in schools and public spaces make this issue even more pressing. This episode was recorded in the fall of 2021, which is why this specific issue is not a part of our discussion. Let Britain Grow - the horticulture industry calls for the Government to negotiate a plant health agreement between the UK and the European Union. Following a vote in the Senedd to declare a nature emergency we speak to Wales' new climate change minister, Julie James. Addressing the need for farms to reduce their carbon footprint and make them more efficient. The shop in Lampeter that sells your unwanted goods in exchange for growing carbon hungry trees. And cheers and congratulations to a gold medal winning Pinot Noir, putting Wales on the global wine map.
My mum, Julie James, was a very troubled teenager. One night some of her friends forced the drug LSD into her mouth and she began to have hallucinations of hell. The next morning she wanted to end her life but a prayer said in desperation was her first step in a 50 year journey filled with sacrificial love, joy and peace.
Take out your enormous contact lenses because we're discussing Henri-Georges Clouzot's seminal 1955 chiller Diabolique! Joining us for the conversation are Jazz & Kat of the Girl, That's Scary! podcast!Join us as we laud this horror film/revenge drama/ghost story/queer-ish love story and praise one of its co-leads (the wonderful Simone Signoret), while we question the acting abilities of "Heart Attack Girl," aka Mrs. Véra Clouzot (in a role given to her by her husband: the film's writer/director).Throughout the episode, we'll compare Christina to Julie James, plan a movie night with Diabolique, Bound, Wild Things and Thelma & Louise and (of course) talk about that incredible twist ending.Plus: neematoads, child-slapping, gaslighting, ghost suits and a 1996 remake with Sharon Stone (spoiler alert: it's pretty good!)!References:Asibong, Andrew. “Nouveau Désordre : Diabolical Queerness in 1950s French Cinema” in Queer 1950s : Rethinking Sexuality in the Postwar Years : Rethinking Sexuality in the Postwar Years (2012)Hayward, Susan. We are live with another episode of the "Denton Insider." Tune in to hear from today's special guest, Denton's own Julie James!
In this episode Julie and I talk about working from home, having to adjust while doing multiple radio tasks including imaging, music programming, music meetings, and building a home office. It's the little things like an extra monitor or a chair to endure prolonged periods of work. I also asked Julie about the AC format and how it has evolved over the last few years, some of the tools she uses to help make music decisions, what it all takes to keep great radio stations sounding awesome, and what she learned from Valerie Geller. We also talked about her time in Edmonton and London, Ontario programming and her eventual move back to Toronto where she has worked with Rogers since 2009. The commentary binge continues, as summer just continues to shed this hellish heat upon us... Safe to say, this isn't weather I think even Julie James can get hooked on (pun intended). I had this on the brain heavy, so I did my first back to back commentary. And this sequel is always worth the watch. Enjoy, folks.

Welcome to our first episode of The Herbalist's Path where we're on a mission to inspire a movement where there's an herbalist in every home, again! In today's episode we have a chat with Missy Rohs, herbalist, activist, teacher, and Cofounder of The Arctos School of Botanical of Herbal & Botanicals Studies. We take a deep dive into her Herbalist's Path where she first got introduced to herbalism through reading Punk Scenes. She joined the Black Cross Health Collective where she first started learning about how to administer first aid in activism situations. She found that she was surrounded by a group of ER nurses, massage therapists, herbalists, nurse practitioners and other health care practitioners, and she needed to learn more about health. She began taking some classes from some of the other Black Cross Health Collective members such as Colette Gardiner, and Krista Olson.A bit later a new partner got her interested in gardening and took her on weekly hikes. She learned about how you can walk down a path in the forest, and get to know the plants, and how to use them. These plants quickly became her friends! She later took the leap to learn more and went down south to learn from Michael Moore and Donna Chesner. She talks about how you become an herbalist when You use plants for their medicinal properties. Even if it means you're just using ginger when you're sick, or peppermint for an upset stomach.Lately she's been loving listening to Julie James of Green Wisdom Herbal Studies, and her Monday morning classes that are available live on Facebook, 9 am PST. One of my teachers Lydia Barthalow, and now at her own school Arctos School of Botanical Studies, she has been able to add her own guest teachers to the list. Her first tincture she ever made was an echinacea tincture she made in college. Garth Caul taught a class on how to make a tincture with fresh echinacea tincture, and she was lucky enough to be in the dorm where the tincture was steeping. She ended up with a ½ gallon jar of echinacea tincture in the end! Bonus! She talks about how echinacea can boost your immunity and help your white blood cells fight off illness. If you're a beginning herbalist, Missy recommend trying to work with one herb at a time so you can get to know and feel that plant and how it works for you personally. She talks about trying a nettles infused vinegar, a hawthorn tincture, or even a plantain poultice. She fell in love with her Pojar & McKinnon Plant ID book, and Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Virabtan Health, or The Family Herbal, Also she loves the Rosale De La Foret's Alchemy for Herbs. The one herb Missy wishes everyone knew about would be dandelion because it grows almost everywhere on this continent. She loves using common weeds for medRegister For Our FREE 3-Day LIVE Immune Boosting Workshop. Learn why herbalism is the most sustainable way to keep you & your family healthy and well. Listen in as herbalist Dana Aronson talks all about the beautiful motherwort! Motherwort’s latin name, Leonurus cardiaca, is depicted from the Greek word leon (lion), ouros (tail), and cardiaca, giving meaning to the heart. This sheds light to the common name, Lion’s Heart. In Europe, the name “motherwort,” has a literal meaning of “mother-herb.” With both of these names, this gives a small peek into the medical properties of this plant we know as Motherwort. Introduction In which we feel real fancy, learn more about geography, and can’t stop asking for recommendations. We’re drinking French 75s and feeling classy as fuck. We’re Reading Bea is reading Murder on Black Swan Lane by Andrea Penrose (out June 27). And she recently finished An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole, which she thinks will be a great gateway romance (out March 28) about a female spy posing as a slave. Fun fact, Alyssa Cole lives in Martinique, and Kim and Emma’s geography lessons continue. Leah is reading Kiss Me That Way by Laura Trentham and Flirting with Disaster by Victoria Dahl. Emma is reading Hot Dog Taste Test by Lisa Hanawalt—a graphic foodie memoir that is weird and delicious. She also just started Kim & Kim by Magdalene Visaggio, which is a comic about punk rock bounty hunters in space. Kim is reading Love Is Love a graphic anthology written in response to the Orlando shooting curated by Marc Andreyko; an important, but difficult read. All proceeds for the book go to the victims, survivors, and families affected by the Orlando Pulse shooting. Which is to say, everyone should buy this book. She’s also reading The Book of Joan by Lidia Yuknavitch (out April 18) a futuristic space Joan of Arc story, which hits weirdly close to home in its political content. We’re Excited About: Bea and Leah have so many frontlist romance novels to tell you about: An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole (more than worth a second mention and out March 28) Full Mountie (#3 in the Frisky Beavers series) by Ainsley Booth & Sadie Haller (out April 4) First in the Frisky Beavers series is Prime Minister “and is basically about if Justin Trudeau weren’t married and liked kinky sex.” Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy (author of Dumplin’; out May 9) The Thing About Love by Julie James (out April18) Julie James will be making an appearance at Ripped Bodice on her author tour! BookRiot contributor who writes about romance novels Interview starts at 10:59 and ends at 42:21 We're sort of worshipping at the temple of love, the same way that religion can help us make sense of human experience and help us to feel there's good in the world—there's a structure that is bending towards the good. Romance can impart that feeling and help you feel like you're participating in the goodness of the fabric of the world. And I think that's a real draw. “I’ve been absolutely amazed at the response we’ve gotten from listeners on HAMILTON– every single time we play a song On Broadway, we get listeners taking pics of their display screens, tweeting, tagging,” said On Broadway programming director Julie James. “I’ve never seen any other show create this kind of consistent enthusiasm – maybe even obsession! That’s why I’m thrilled that we’ll be taking subscribers inside the theatre to get insight from the creators and stars – to hear, in their own words, what their experience has been at this ‘revolutionary’ moment.
