In this episode, we meet Emma Lynas and Dr Satya Raghuvanshi, to discuss how Accurx has evolved from a clinical decision support tool for antibiotic prescribing into a comprehensive communication platform for healthcare professionals and patients, facilitating various communication needs, such as sending SMS messages, conducting remote consultations, and managing patient enquiries. It is in 98% practices in England, and has been integrated with the new Vision system for Scotland, and can be used as a tool for total triage as well as for messaging. Accurx's features include SMS messaging, structured data capture for patient consultations, and collaboration tools for healthcare teams. The platform is able to adapt to different care settings and patient preferences, offering a digital-first approach while supporting traditional communication methods. We discussed potential concerns about overwhelming healthcare practices with increased demand, how to minimise this, emphasizing Accurx's focus on supporting practices in managing their capacity effectively, and also a phased implementation approach, tailored to each practice's readiness and needs, along with the support provided by implementation and support teams. In a comprehensive dialogue between Dr. Satya Raghuvanshi, VP of Clinical at Accurx, and Dr. Abeyna Bubbers-Jones, Dr. Raghuvanshi provides deep insights into considerations and philosophies around product development, networking, and recruitment in healthcare and tech-oriented roles. How can you use your curiosity thinking and put yourself at a competitive edge when applying for jobs. This episode blends practical advice for aspiring professionals with an insider's view of recruitment and team-building strategies from a leadership perspective. Timestamped overview [00:02:27] First pediatric Hackathon sparked interest in healthcare. [00:06:00] Appreciating product thinking, clinical experience, collaboration. [00:10:19] Growing clinical team, emphasizing empathy for healthcare. [00:14:44] Speak to people, understand how they think. [00:16:06] Left pediatric training early for health tech. [00:20:03] Doctors need curiosity and connection for leadership. [00:23:36] Hiring for potential, flexible thinking & collaboration. [00:28:52] Equal vote in lunch, standardized interviews, assessing leadership. [00:30:14] "360 view of a person is difficult" Standout Quotes: Working in Health Tech: "Whilst I love pediatrics, love clinical medicine, definitely wanted to use my brain in a different way to solve very unbound and often complex challenges in healthcare end to end using technology." — Satya Raghuvanshi [00:03:59 → 00:04:13] The Importance of Product Thinking and Collaboration: "One was a really deep appreciation of product thinking and how you translate your clinical experience and your clinical background into product development...also just the ability to collaborate...can you work effectively with engineers, can you work effectively with product managers to deliver an end to end solution?" — Satya Raghuvanshi [00:06:02 → 00:06:13] Product Development in Healthcare: "Good products should solve a problem." — Satya Raghuvanshi [00:15:44 → 00:15:45] Upskilling and Entrepreneurial Spirit: "I think there's quite a lot of activity based things. So hackathons, fellowships, courses that you can do that helps upskill you and lots of those are subsidized or accessible on online forums, et cetera. So you'll get lots of different opportunities there to be able to generally upskill. I think there's something to be said for that kind of almost entrepreneurial spirit in the sense of solving problem within your existing care setting." — Satya Raghuvanshi [00:21:41 → 00:22:46] Hiring based on Potential and Flexibility: "So we also don't hire for skills. We hire things like we're not expecting anyone to have done product development who have come from a health tech company. We're looking for people who show potential. And by potential, I mean can you think flexibly around a problem? Can you have fixed ideas? But actually, are you open to those fixed ideas being challenged when you're given more contextual information or something that maybe doesn't quite fit with the answer you didn't?" — Satya Raghuvanshi [00:23:41 → 00:24:10] Cultural Fit in an Organization: "One of the big red flags for me is when somebody's really derogatory if they work in primary care and they're derogatory about their secondary colleagues or that's actually anticipated to the mission what we're trying to achieve. And if you come in with that opinion, but you're also not willing to say, hey, this problem and this is something I want to solve or get to make better. That will be a bit of a red flag to me." — Satya Raghuvanshi [00:25:58 → 00:26:17] Importance of Team Dynamics: "So we always invite people to come and have lunch with the team because they have an equal vote in whether or not that person joins. And so that, I think is quite important because something that I found is where you have that imbalance actually ends up causing so much disruption down the line." — Satya Raghuvanshi [00:28:52 → 00:29:08] Do You Need Further Support? An interview with Hanne Ockert-Axelsson. Hanne is a Senior Product Manager at accuRx, a UK-based Healthtech company revolutionising the world of General Practioners (GPs) in the UK National Health Service (NHS). Hanne formerly worked at various NGOs and health-focused organisations before seeking out digital product management to make a measurable impact quickly. We talk about a lot, including: The mission behind accuRx, how their solution got into the hands of 98% of GP practices in the UK, and how healthcare providers deserve great products like the rest of us How she got her first product job without any experience, and used her passion for healthcare to become the first product hire at accuRx The resources she used to level up her game once she'd got that first job, and the one key book she'd recommend to other people making the move Her passion for high performing teams, what that means to her and some of the ways she tries to help build a performant culture The difference between Big Tech product management & other companies and why it's important to get in the trenches with your team Why you shouldn't fix what ain't broke when moving into a new team, to avoid demoralising people and losing their buy in to fix the real problems How to be a good team leader, the importance of identifying your leadership style, being your authentic self but the being best version of yourself where required And much more! You might not have heard of today’s guest or his company, but if you’ve had a Covid jab in the UK (or are going to) there’s a good chance you’ve used their tech. Laurence Bargery is co-founder of accuRx, a healthtech supplier trusted by 99% of GPs, and with ⅓ of all vaccine bookings in the UK now taking place through their systems.“Within about four or six weeks of us releasing this suite of Covid tools we'd gone up from that 50% point to about 99% of GPs using us.”Laurence and co-founder Jacob Haddad built a tool to allow GPs and other healthcare providers to communicate more effectively with their patients. To date, their software is used by 7,000+ GP surgeries and has messaged 30m+ patients. But they didn’t start out down this avenue. In fact, they started off looking at antibiotic resistance, but the market wasn't there, so they pivoted. They knew they wanted to create something that added value to healthcare, but not knowing enough about the industry and its sticking points, they immersed themselves in a GP practice. “And that's where this idea came from, of something super simple we can do that's going to be really powerful when applicable to so many of the problems in general practice and healthcare and ultimately, that was communication.”From getting traction with GPs, to building individual Wix websites, Laurence shares how they grew accuRx pre-Covid, to how they've dealt with the explosive growth during and post the pandemic. If you’re a founder and you’ve had to pivot your business, or you’re thinking about pivoting, don’t miss this latest episode of Secret Leaders. The evolution of technology in general practice has been accelerated over the last 12 months but how ready were we, and are we, for further digital transformation? What are the factors that influence our willingness to embrace new ways of working and what are the barriers to progression? This was the focus of GP and Digital Fellow Dr Matt Hammerton's recent report on digital readiness within his local integrated health partnership, a report conducted in conjunction with Wessex Academic Health Science Network (AHSN), with the support of WAHSN's Associate Director Rachel Dominey. This week's podcast offers a fascinating overview of the report's findings and outcomes and includes practical advice and recommendations on readying practices and networks for the next stage of the digital journey. Introductions (45 secs) The reasons for undertaking the study (57 secs) The reality of the tech available versus what is being used (1 min 42 secs) Defining digital readiness (2 mins 8 secs) Which areas of general practice does the report cover? (8 mins 33 secs) The AccuRx effect (9 mins 17 secs) Does a more bespoke technology increase our willingness to use it? (9 mins 57 secs) Other key factors impacting digital readiness (12 mins 53 secs) Some recommendations (14 mins 6 secs) The non-clinical profile (16 mins) Patient age impact and influence (16 mins 38 secs) The risk of practices and networks falling behind (17 mins 28 secs) Further outcomes, recommendations, and advice (18 mins 33 secs) Taking forward the recommendations from the AHSN's perspective (19 mins 58 secs) The link to the digital readiness report is here

My guest today is Jacob Haddad, CEO of AccuRx, a London-based company working on a platform that brings patients and healthcare teams together. AccuRx started in 2016, raised a $9m Series A from Atomico and LocalGlobe in 2019 and has grown tremendously since then. I had Jacob on an earlier episode of the podcast but today's conversation is completely different. Jacob has a very deliberate approach to running accuRx so this episode is absolutely packed with tactical advise on how to start, build and run a company. We cover everything: the accuRx's origin and early days. how Jacob uses curiosity and first-principles to solve problems The importance of optimizing hiring for Values and Culture. Why having an obsession with the end-user is key for companies working on an industry such as healthcare. the AccuRx product development process and how it evolved over time. and much much more. I hope you learn as much from this conversation as I did.
accuRx have been on an interesting journey and one that they may not always be given credit for, given the overnight and overwhelming success of the simple, yet game changing software they have introduced to general practice over the last four months. From modest beginnings, working out of small numbers of practices on process improvement measures, to the inception of the messaging service and video consultations, super rapid rollouts, continuous reinvention and pioneering tech in scope for the future, co-founder Jacob Haddad takes Ben through, arguably, one of tech's biggest triumphs in healthcare and what accuRx means for primary care and beyond. Introductions (45 secs) Where accuRx began (1min 8 secs) A turning point (1 min 36 secs) The messaging service (2 mins 5 secs) The cause for the change in direction (2 mins 45 secs) Communication, communication, communication (4 mins 25 secs) A new approach to rollout (5 mins 16 secs) Video consultations and Covid triage (6 mins 15 secs) Feature design with patients and practice in mind (8 mins 9 secs) Rollout timeline (8 mins 24 secs) Identifying the need for more effective patient communication tools (9 mins) The surge in demand (9 mins 50 secs) Filling a gap in the market (10 mins 17 secs) Has the messaging service been the key enabler of change and improvement in healthcare? (11 mins 31 secs) Security, governance and information sharing (12 mins 1 sec) How long will the service continue to be free to use? (14 mins 17 secs) The "plus" tier (15 mins 50 secs) accuRx ethos (16 mins 6 secs) Working alongside health to build great tech (17 mins 54 secs) What's next for accuRx? accuRx have been hailed as the overwhelming success story of the Covid crisis, with a rapid deployment of much needed virtual tech into practices up and down the country and enabling primary teams to maintain high quality care for their patients. Ben is joined on this week's podcast by GP and IT champion Dustyn Saint of Primary Care Pathways, to discuss the accuRx journey, what their breakout success has meant for general practice and how their influence is likely to extend beyond the pandemic. This week's Sunday Session has some bonus content from Jacob Haddad, cofounder of AccuRx who appeared in Episode 52. Jacob gives his tips on how healthtech startups can get things right from day one by building for the end user, having your own office to build the best culture, get the unsexy basics right and optimising for adoption. Mentioned this week: Episode 52: The Story of AccuRx and Clinician-Patient Communication
Do you want to learn more about AccuRx - the software to help practices communicate better with patients via text message and save yourself time, workload and increase income- of course so watch here with our walkthrough with Ben Spiro of AccuRx.
This week, James is joined by Jacob Haddad, cofounder of AccuRx, a UK-based startup using clinician-to-patient messaging to bring patients and their healthcare teams together. They make patients healthier and the workforce happier. AccuRx raised £8.8 million in Series A funding in February 2019 and their vision is for anyone involved in a patient's care to easily communicate with everyone else involved in that patient's care, including the patient. Their flagship product, Chain SMS, is used by GP practices to communicate with their patients. Chain SMS is completely free; the focus is on learning and developing ideas for powering communication across the healthcare workforce. It's now used in over 1 in 3 GP practices, all by word of mouth. On this week's episode, James and Jacob talk around a huge range of useful topics for entrepreneurs: bottom-up field sales in healthtech, pivoting and the importance of testing your assumptions with humility (AccuRx was originally built to solve a problem in antibiotic prescribing), business models in primary care (and tips for selling), innovative ways to get a customer's attention and Jacob tells us of his key tips in healthtech: minimising time to value with every interaction and building a great experience for end-users. www.accurxcom | jacob@accurx.com | https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacobnhaddad/ For more information and content, check out our website www.hs.ventures.
