Why do doctors feel guilty about asking for more money? And why does the world seem to reinforce that guilt? But here's the truth: knowing your value and charging accordingly is not greed—it's self-respect. In this episode, we're breaking down: The cultural narratives that make doctors feel guilty about money How companies and organisations take advantage of doctors' expertise for free Why other professionals aren't shamed for making more—and why you shouldn't be either How adopting a premium pricing and value-based strategy protects you from burnout and builds a sustainable career Practical steps to shift your mindset and start asking for what you deserve Doctors, it's time to stop undervaluing yourselves. The only people who shame you for asking for more are the ones benefiting from you asking for less.   Ready to Own Your Worth & Elevate Your Career? Like, for example, in medicine, if you're like, if you pass this, then you'll get this. Whereas in industry it's like, well, you might or might not get it, depending you could be amazing and still not get that job." — Dr. Yuki Nehikhare  Challenges in Career Transition for Doctors: "I think for me it was the fact that I'd invested what seemed to, at the time seemed to be at the time, a lot of my life, getting into medicine, training, et cetera, et cetera, and only to throw it all away for another career." — Dr. Yuki Nehikhare  Modern Job Market Demands: "I think there is more of an emphasis on how do you problem solve, how do you work in a crisis moment, how do you work collaboratively across teams with internal and external stakeholders, how much commercial acumen do you have at this stage?" — Dr. Yuki Nehikhare  The Importance of Self-Promotion for Physicians: "And, yeah, it's a skill that not many doctors organically have when it comes to themselves, just because of the culture that we say grow up in, in medicine, particularly in the UK, I should say it's a little bit different elsewhere. But, yeah, it is an essential skill that you definitely need to learn to survive in industry." — Dr. Yuki Nehikhare  Transitioning from Academia to Industry: "It's similar in the sense that moving to industry, even though there aren't really any kind of written rules, there are kind of rules, right? It's a lot more nuanced. There's a different culture and again, it's about understanding what the culture is, particularly for the sector that you're going to or even the company that you're going into or that you're really committed to." — Dr. Yuki Nehikhare  The Value of Networking at In-Person Events: "But yeah, the benefits of attending events in person strongly outweighs, particularly now when we're kind of we've all got digital fatigue. Post COVID strongly outweighs the online in the sense that you get to meet people in person, you get the chemistry, the language you mentioned, which is a really important part of that as well, especially if you're new to the sector and it can open up so many opportunities." — Dr. Yuki Nehikhare    Do You Need Further Support? The episode encourages listeners to disrupt their careers, broaden perspectives, and make a meaningful impact in healthcare and beyond. Quotes:"Control Over Career Choices in Medicine: And I thought, I just want to have control over my career and control over knowing where I want to be in 5-10 years time. And I felt that that wasn't happening in the NHS."— Guy Gross  "Translating Medical Skills to Business: So one of the amazing things that doctors do that other people don't is look at things through a lens of logic. You've got your surgical sieve. You ask questions like, is it before, during or after an organ where you've got a problem? Business is no different. When I consider problems in business, I look at things, is it presales? Is it the problem with landing the sale? Or is it the after sales, for example? And it's a very logical application where we are able to rapidly put together frameworks, I would say more doctors than I know other people around how to solve problems, and that's a massive win."— Guy Gross  "Personal Growth and Self-Recognition: But when it comes to growing yourself, it's very much about identifying what are your own superpowers. And when I look at that for myself, it's taken me a very long time, probably 15-20 years, to identify in myself what makes me unique as a person. I would say the ability to walk into a room full of smoke and just point directly to the fire."— Guy Gross  "Understanding Corporate Lifecycle: I've also realized there's different phases of companies, and this is something you don't realize unless you've been through a lot of this. There is the founder part of a journey, which is the ability to overcome inertia with a group of people who have the oomph behind them to stick it out and just get it done by any means necessary. Then you have the growth phase where once you've proved that you've got a thing that works, you need to scale it. A totally different set of skills around identifying, optimizing and managing things as they grow. And then once you're big, you just want someone who's a safe pair of hands to run that. And so you have to identify where you fit in the lifecycle of companies as well, with your temperament and with your skill set."— Guy Gross  "Understanding Health Tech Failure: The reason why a lot of health tech fails is they completely fail to understand that. If you're talking about a narrative of keeping people well for another ten years and preventing long term disease, the challenge with that is if I'm an investor in that as a health system, then I'm not going to see my money back for ten years. But if I can help you now identify people who are continuously coming back to hospital and stop those people coming back, then that's in year savings."— Guy Gross    Do You Need Further Support? They dive into how Ben made the shift from banking to a career in medicine and then to industry using his clinical knowledge, insights, personal experience and leadership skills, shedding light on the mindset shifts and cultural shaping involved to grow a successful business. [36:00] What does making an impact mean?  [38:02] Metrics and stories drive me as an entrepreneur. [39:46] Early company building is tough, and requires sacrifice. Quotes "Passion in Healthcare Sector: I continuously try to follow what I'm passionate about and what on a deep level really motivates me rather than necessarily looking at the best job opportunities, I think when you then become an entrepreneur, that's really important because entrepreneurship is tough, and you're going to have difficult experiences."— Ben Maruthappu "Tech Innovation in Social Care: And at that time, when I co founded Cera, there weren't many examples of technology being used in social care. Yes, there were in the NHS, in GP practices and hospitals that was emerging, but in social care, really barely any. And so I thought, well, why don't we set something up to do something about it and to make the sector better for frontline staff and then, of course, for patients and then for family members."— Ben Maruthappu  "Staffing in a Growing Company: Being motivated about making an impact, I think is a crucial part of the DNA of someone who joins a healthcare company."— Ben Maruthappu  "The Importance of Resilience in Startups: So I tend to really ask people about experiences that they've been through that haven't worked out, what they learned from it and how they responded to it."— Ben Maruthappu  "Job Interviews in Health Tech: I really love giving people a chance who maybe they haven't been able to focus on their kind of career achievements or their experience placements as much for whatever reasons, but they're very motivated and they want a shot."— Ben Maruthappu  "Entrepreneurship Insights: The earlier you bring the right talent around you, the easier all this becomes, the more balanced you can be, or even just having a support network. People who advise you or give you the right mentorship, they don't need to be actual team members, they can work. But the faster you get that set up earlier on, that means you are in turn set up for being more successful, not just in a work capacity, but also in a personal capacity as well."— Ben Maruthappu    Do You Need Further Support? But the return, the social return and also maybe the personal return is higher than you otherwise could have turns out also."— Sven Jungmann [00:06:17 → 00:06:33] The Power of Diversification: "And if you instead say, well, actually, I'm going to learn two things, or maybe even three things, and I'm trying to get in the top 20%, then your relative return on the time invested in order to get there is much higher."— Sven Jungmann [00:09:26 → 00:09:40] The Pressure to Keep Learning: "Oh, yeah. I think what I often hear from doctors is this constant sense of not being good enough or well trained enough, or there's some certificate lacking that gives you this official permission to do X, Y, or Z."— Sven Jungmann [00:11:35 → 00:11:48] The Rise of Micro Learning: "And what's much more important is the ability to access knowledge and also to make sense of it and communicate it to others and to interrogate computer systems in an intelligent way."— Sven Jungmann [00:14:04 → 00:14:15] The Changing Definition of Medicine in the Digital Age: "There are a lot of medical professions that are not directly involved in patient care, and nobody would question that, right? But suddenly, if you work on a digital health solution, or if you are in medical journalism or other decision making aspects or whatever, that touch medicine, somehow it often gets questioned."— Sven Jungmann [00:20:22 → 00:20:41] The Myth of the Risk-Taking Founder: "Yeah, I fully agree. So there's this often unspoken fact about founding, for example, and is that you always think founders are big risk takers people. They jump off a cliff, and then they start building the airplane as they fall, and then somehow it works in one out of ten cases."— Sven Jungmann [00:23:32 → 00:23:53] The Importance of Adaptability: "The things that got me here, they might not get me wherever I want to go now, and maybe even they might hold me back."— Sven Jungmann [00:31:34 → 00:31:42] "Beyond the Bedside: It is okay that you think about it."— Sven Jungmann [00:34:23 → 00:34:25]   Do You Need Further Support? Clinical Leadership in Health Tech - What does that really look like?

In a comprehensive dialogue between Dr. Satya Raghuvanshi, VP of Clinical at Accurx, and Dr. Abeyna Bubbers-Jones, Dr. Raghuvanshi provides deep insights into considerations and philosophies around product development, networking, and recruitment in healthcare and tech-oriented roles. How can you use your curiosity thinking and put yourself at a competitive edge when applying for jobs. This episode blends practical advice for aspiring professionals with an insider's view of  recruitment and team-building strategies from a leadership perspective.   Timestamped overview [00:02:27] First pediatric Hackathon sparked interest in healthcare. [00:06:00] Appreciating product thinking, clinical experience, collaboration. [00:10:19] Growing clinical team, emphasizing empathy for healthcare. [00:14:44] Speak to people, understand how they think. [00:16:06] Left pediatric training early for health tech. [00:20:03] Doctors need curiosity and connection for leadership. [00:23:36] Hiring for potential, flexible thinking & collaboration. [00:28:52] Equal vote in lunch, standardized interviews, assessing leadership. [00:30:14] "360 view of a person is difficult" Standout Quotes: Working in Health Tech: "Whilst I love pediatrics, love clinical medicine, definitely wanted to use my brain in a different way to solve very unbound and often complex challenges in healthcare end to end using technology." — Satya Raghuvanshi  [00:03:59 → 00:04:13]   The Importance of Product Thinking and Collaboration: "One was a really deep appreciation of product thinking and how you translate your clinical experience and your clinical background into product development...also just the ability to collaborate...can you work effectively with engineers, can you work effectively with product managers to deliver an end to end solution?" — Satya Raghuvanshi  [00:06:02 → 00:06:13]   Product Development in Healthcare: "Good products should solve a problem." — Satya Raghuvanshi  [00:15:44 → 00:15:45]   Upskilling and Entrepreneurial Spirit: "I think there's quite a lot of activity based things. So hackathons, fellowships, courses that you can do that helps upskill you and lots of those are subsidized or accessible on online forums, et cetera. So you'll get lots of different opportunities there to be able to generally upskill. I think there's something to be said for that kind of almost entrepreneurial spirit in the sense of solving problem within your existing care setting." — Satya Raghuvanshi  [00:21:41 → 00:22:46]   Hiring based on Potential and Flexibility: "So we also don't hire for skills. We hire things like we're not expecting anyone to have done product development who have come from a health tech company. We're looking for people who show potential. And by potential, I mean can you think flexibly around a problem? Can you have fixed ideas? But actually, are you open to those fixed ideas being challenged when you're given more contextual information or something that maybe doesn't quite fit with the answer you didn't?" — Satya Raghuvanshi  [00:23:41 → 00:24:10]   Cultural Fit in an Organization: "One of the big red flags for me is when somebody's really derogatory if they work in primary care and they're derogatory about their secondary colleagues or that's actually anticipated to the mission what we're trying to achieve. And if you come in with that opinion, but you're also not willing to say, hey, this problem and this is something I want to solve or get to make better. That will be a bit of a red flag to me." — Satya Raghuvanshi  [00:25:58 → 00:26:17]   Importance of Team Dynamics: "So we always invite people to come and have lunch with the team because they have an equal vote in whether or not that person joins. And so that, I think is quite important because something that I found is where you have that imbalance actually ends up causing so much disruption down the line." — Satya Raghuvanshi  [00:28:52 → 00:29:08]   Do You Need Further Support? [00:19:07] Enjoyable, energizing work with supportive team. [00:21:54] Portfolio careers help me maximize impact. [00:23:51] Minimum pay cut for maximum value. Standout Quotes: The Future of Healthcare: "I often remember talking, this now doesn't stand true because it's so ubiquitous. But way back when I was like every single patient that came in, I remember when I was in SHO, just mentally tracking that every single parent had a mobile phone. So 15 years ago, when people were like should we or shouldn't we be doing stuff on a mobile phone?"— Dr. Umang Patel [00:02:24 → 00:03:29] "Skills for Success in Medtech: 'Being part of an MDT is vital for success.'"— Dr. Umang Patel [00:04:36 → 00:04:40] "Developing Humility and a Growth Mindset: 'You do have to eat your own ego...there's a lot of humility that you have to be able to display in order to be able to get on with people and move things through the teams. Isn't it amazing to then think about it?"— Dr. Umang Patel [00:07:38 → 00:07:49] The Importance of Perspective: "I wouldn't have survived Babylon without having the energy on a Friday to be like, oh, this is why we're doing it, this is why you have to go through all of the ups and downs because it really is important."— Dr. Umang Patel [00:21:15 → 00:21:25] "The Importance of Delivering Ten Times the Value: What are you going to do that's going to be ten times the salary that you want? What can I give back to? How could I do that and what am I really good at doing?"— Dr. Umang Patel [00:24:53 → 00:24:56] Finding Your Skill Set: "It took me about five years before I worked out that I liked to communicate and explain things more than I liked, say, doing the governance behind it."— Dr. Umang Patel [00:26:02 → 00:26:15] Finding Success as a Clinician: "In my experience, you don't [need additional qualifications], but you do need to have that ability to get your energy from a place that will keep you going."— Dr. Umang Patel [00:33:49 → 00:33:57] Conclusion: It's crucial to think beyond our clinical training. Our experiences and skills outside academia shape us as individuals, impacting our mindset and potential. It's not about collecting qualifications but rather doing the pre-work, building a network and delivering 10 times the value.   Do You Need Further Support? In this episode, we dive deep into a topic many of us shy away from: failure. Dr. Ally Jaffee, is a Co-founder of Nutritank, a nutritional education platform for healthcare professionals. We explore her own journey of overcoming setbacks starting from failing to get into medical school, and how embracing failure can be pivotal for growth. Highlights: [00:00:04] Dr. Abeyna Bubbers-Jones introduces Dr. Ally Jaffee and sets the tone for the conversation about embracing failures. [00:01:43] Dr. Jaffee shares what drives her: Passion. Her mantra of 'work hard -> achieve passion' keeps her moving forward. [00:03:18] Both doctors reflect on the challenges they faced in getting into medical school and the importance of perseverance. [00:08:13] Dr. Jaffee talks about the development of her interest in nutrition during a gap year, laying the foundation for Nutritank. [00:10:10] Strategies for navigating challenges and being vocal in a hierarchical system like the healthcare industry. [00:14:28] The importance of open conversations, challenging biases, and promoting mental health awareness among medical professionals. [00:17:02] Embracing failure and its role in growth and learning. The power of reframing failures as opportunities.   Standout Quotes: The Importance of Passion and Self-Nourishment: "Passion is what drives me and allows me to keep wanting to push, push, push, and break the glass ceiling and push boundaries."— Dr. Ally Jaffee [00:03:09 → 00:03:17] Fighting Against the Odds: "Going into upper six, my last year of school was really daunting because my teachers were telling me not to bother applying for medicine. And they said to me that I should just go with my strengths, and that was languages, that was my English literature A."— Dr. Ally Jaffee [00:06:52 → 00:07:12] Passion for Holistic Healthcare: "So on the year out, which I am so grateful for, and do believe that a lot of the time life happens for you rather than to you. So when I couldn't join all my friends who were going off to university first time round, and I was kind of on my own, I was working, saving up to go traveling and reapplying for medical school. That was when I developed my interest for nutrition and just healthy living in general, because I was curious, I had time, I went traveling. Food was always fascinating to me, and one way or another, I started just reading more about the evidence basis around nutrition to not only prevent chronic disease, but also manage it. And then I started medical school already primed. With that passion for holistic healthcare."— Dr. Ally Jaffee [00:08:36 → 00:09:25] "When to Assert Yourself and When Not to": "My biggest piece of advice is if you are of the change making kind of caliber and you have an appetite for just not sitting with the status quo, is realize that there's a time and a place and respect and humility is very important and knowing when to assert yourself and when not to."— Dr. Ally Jaffee [00:10:11 → 00:10:33] The Truth Behind Success Stories: "And there's a diagram with it's basically a before and an after. And it's just a grid and you see lots of ticks, ticks, ticks, ticks, ticks, which signified the successes and it's the after, which are the ticks all in those same grid places, but there are crosses all around them. And that's the part of the grid that you don't see."— Dr. Ally Jaffee [00:20:35 → 00:20:54] The Importance of Normalizing Failure: "So I think it's so important about normalizing it and actually having senior leaders in particular talk about their failures when they were younger, but also right now in their very senior positions because we shouldn't be putting anyone on a pedestal and we shouldn't be thinking that we can't do anything."— Dr. Ally Jaffee [00:21:13 → 00:21:30]   Conclusion:See failures not as roadblocks but as stepping stones. It's about the journey, not just the destination. And sometimes, the most significant lessons come from the detours.   Do You Need Further Support?
