A company who has created an AI patient care system that can eliminate inefficiencies in patient appointments has taken the top prize at the National Enterprise Awards. SPRYT is a virtual assistant that can liaise directly with patients on appointments via simple SMS communications to ensure appointment completion and can effectively reallocate appointments in real-time to eliminate no shows and doctor and consultant wastage. The company was set up by Neill Dunwoody and Daragh Donohoe in 2022, supported by Local Enterprise Office Monaghan, and pilots of the company's ASA tool with the NHS have seen a 160% increase in appointment conversion rates. They have also seen a 260% increase in patient engagement using this tool, while removing 80-90% of the administration around appointments. The Awards, which are an initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices to celebrate the best small businesses in Ireland, were held at the Round Room in the Mansion House in Dublin in what is their 25th year. Alan Dillon,T.D., Minister of State for Employment, Small Business and Retail ,announced this year's winners in front of representatives from the Local Enterprise Offices, Enterprise Ireland and the Local Authorities and small businesses from across the country at the event. Announcing the award winners at the Mansion House Minister Dillon said, "The National Enterprise Awards are a celebration of the innovation, resilience, and ambition that define Ireland's business community. Each year, the calibre of finalists continues to rise, reflecting the extraordinary talent and determination of entrepreneurs across the country. These businesses are not only creating jobs - they are shaping the future of our local economies and communities. "Tonight's winners represent the very best of what Irish enterprise has to offer, and we remain committed to supporting them as they grow, compete, and thrive on both a national and global stage. These businesses are at the core of every town, village and community and are vital to our economy. We will ensure businesses continue to get the support they need to grow, prosper, and remain competitive," Kieran Comerford, Chair of the Local Enterprise Offices, said; "The National Enterprise Awards are a celebration of the very best of what Irish enterprise has to offer. It highlights those companies who are primed to take those next steps and scale up into international markets and it also highlights excellence in key areas of business development such as digitalisation, sustainability and exporting. "We will no doubt see the winners here go on to do great things over the coming years but for every business that has made it to this point, it is validation that they have created an outstanding business. Entrepreneurship is the road less taken but we have to encourage more people to take that leap, and show them the benefits it can bring. "We have some amazing people across the country and many have started businesses that are taking on the world. Look at some of our previous winners like Pestle & Mortar, Bevcraft and Advanced Cosmetics. As the Local Enterprise Offices we will continue to encourage and support great ideas and new businesses because we have the entrepreneurs to make amazing global companies." There were several other category winners announced on the night. Innovation Award The winner of the Innovation Award was MoneySherpa, supported by Local Enterprise Office Louth. Moneysherpa provide a complete home buying service including mortgages, surveys, and conveyancing in one place and also provide software to the property industry to integrate the home buying journey. Best Export Award The winner of the Best Export Award was Seabound Engineering, supported by Local Enterprise Office Donegal. Now the Government says it's accelerating the competitiveness and productivity action plan. But what's in it and what can be done given Ireland's notoriously slow legal and planning system. A new website will help the public access information on over 1,000 local government services provided by the 31 local authorities. LocalGov.ie, launched by Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government and Planning, Alan Dillon, is the biggest online directory of local authority services ever developed in Ireland. The roll out of the site comes as research shows 60% of people have found it difficult to find the information they need from their local authority area. "This will change that and will act like a 'sat nav', pointing people to the exact services about which they need information in plain, accessible language," said Minister Dillon. "It is a game-changer in connecting local Government with citizens and explains the entire process of how to access services, from motor tax, dog licences and home adaptation grants to outdoor leisure amenities and library services. "Crucially, it will guide and signpost people to information which can improve their lives in a practical way, and the communities in which they live." One of the primary aims of the site is to provide a database of national grants and funding opportunities for individuals, sporting clubs and businesses - and a guide on how to access these in the users' local area. Funding, for example, is available for a wide range of activities including anti-litter and anti-graffiti initiatives, historic structures, mobility aids and vacant properties. The website also provides an advisory role - offering information on subjects including responsible dog ownership. The site, which will be regularly updated as information and legislation changes, was launched at the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) offices in Usher's Quay. It will be continually reviewed and updated with new information and development enhancements, in line with the Digital and ICT Strategy 2030 - Digital Local Government: Working for Everyone. "Not so long ago, local authority information came in the form of newsletters, but LocalGov.ie is the new, trusted home for every local authority service available in Ireland, under one website," said Patricia Liddy, Project Board Chair of LocalGov.ie. "Research shows that many people do not associate the work that local authorities do with the Local Government sector and this site aims to transform that." The 2023 Local Government Services report revealed there is high public awareness of key services such as footpaths, street cleaning and street lighting. But just over half surveyed in the report know that local authorities are also responsible for environmental protection (55%), motor tax collection (54%), tourism and events (54%) and monitoring waterways and beaches (50%). "LocalGov.ie is aimed at everyone and designed to eliminate confusing language and out-of-date information, the goal was to make it accessible, easy-to-read and easy to navigate and will also act as an access route to the websites of all 31 Local Authorities in Ireland," added Ms Liddy. Tipperary. Eircode: E91 E0X3. Bull choice for late breeding

The Dairy Edge

DairyBeef 500 Programme Co-ordinator, Alan Dillon, joins Stuart Childs on this week's Dairy Edge to discuss late breeding season bull choice. Alan explains that late born calves are as much a hassle for the beef farmer as they are for the dairy farmer as they don't fit into any system, so a defined breeding season is important to eliminate May/June calves as they are of no value to dairy beef farms nor to dairy farmers. Alan then outlines the criteria for bull selection at this stage of the season with high carcass weight >10kg for traditional breeds such as Angus and Hereford and a minimum of 20kg for the continental breeds. The focus must be to deliver a quality calf that has potential to deliver a return.  Gestation length and calving ease are the other two important criteria for dairy farmers particularly at this stage of the season where the objective must be to get the cow calved as early as possible at this late stage. Alan says there are buyers for most calves throughout the season with a variation similar to that of calving start date to when calves are bought across the country. Dairy farmers should try to use the best beef genetics either through AI or the stock bull they buy to generate calves of quality to move into dairy beef systems.  In the future CBV will have a significant role to play in deciding the value of the calf but all calves can leave a return as long as the purchase price is right.  Alan advocates developing a relationship with a local buyer to ensure calves move off the dairy farm for a reasonable price and in an orderly fashion rather than being at the mercy of the market each week. This is very useful for the calf buyer as they have animals that have a health history behind them so dairy farmers should try to develop these relationships ahead of the calving season when time will be hard to come by.  Using a good beef animal is as easy as using a bad one and is to the benefit of the industry as a whole. Finally, Alan invites all farmers to attend the BEEf2024 Open Day in Grange, Co. Meath on June 26th, to see all things dairy beef with something for everyone. For more episodes from the Dairy Edge podcast go to the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/dairy/the-dairy-edge-podcast/ The Dairy Edge is a co-production with LastCastMedia.com

More than 200 people fleeing the war in Ukraine have been left homeless here in the past three weeks, according to the Secretary General of a government department. Fágadh níos mó ná 200 duine a bhí ag teitheadh ón chogaíocht san Úcráin gan lóistín anseo le trí seachtainí anuas, dar le Ard-Rúnaí roinne rialtais. 203 refugees have had no accommodation since January 24, said Kevin McCarthy, Secretary General of the Department of Children and Inclusion to the Public Accounts Committee. Níl aon lóistín faighte ag 203 teifeach ó bhí an 24 Eanáir a dúirt Kevin McCarthy, Ard-Rúnaí na Roinne Leanaí agus Lánpháirtíochta le Coiste na gCuntas Poiblí. Although the Department of Children and Integration is in the process of establishing a second transit hub for those coming into the State, the Secretary General told the Committee that "this will not necessarily solve the problem." Cé go bhfuil an Roinn Leanaí agus Lánpháirtíochta i mbun iarrachtaí an dara mol idirthurais a bhunú dóibh siúd atá ag teacht isteach sa Stát, dúirt an tArd- Rúnaí leis an Choiste "nach gá go réiteodh seo an fhadhb." Kevin McCarthy said that protests against people applying for international protection - rather than against people fleeing Ukraine - are making accommodation providers reluctant. Dúirt Kevin McCarthy go bhfuil agóidí in aghaidh daoine a dhéanann iarratas ar chosaint idirnáisiúnta - seachas in aghaidh daoine atá ag teitheadh ón Úcráin - ag cur drogaill ar lucht soláthair lóistín. Although the majority of those who came here were welcomed and supported, he said that protesters - a small but growing number - are leaving their mark on the accommodation supply. Cé gur cuireadh fáilte agus tacaíocht ar fáil d'fhormhór na ndaoine a tháinig anseo, dúirt sé go bhfuil lucht agóide - líon beag ach atá ag dul i méid - ag fágáil a loirg ar an soláthar lóistín. "Providers are quite reluctant to make their facilities available to applicants for international protection," he said, but "this is not related to the issue of Ukraine." "Tá leisc nach beag ar sholáthróirí a gcuid áiseanna a chur ar fáil d'iarrthóirí ar chosaint idirnáisiúnta," a dúirt sé, ach "ní bhaineann seo le ceist na hÚcráine." "There are particular difficulties in relation to single men" he said, "although the facts show that single men are not a threat to the communities in which they live." "Tá deacrachtaí ar leith ann maidir le fir shingil" a dúirt sé, "cé go léiríonn na fíricí nach bagairt iad fir shingil do na pobail ina mbíonn siad ina gcónaí." Kevin McCarthy said that it is likely that there will be a shortfall of more than 3,000 beds available when the contracts that the Department currently has in place with hotels come to an end. Dúirt Kevin McCarthy gur dóiche go mbeidh easnamh de níos mó ná 3,000 leaba ar fáil nuair a thiocfaidh deireadh leis na conarthaí atá i bhfeidhm ag an Roinn le h-óstáin faoi láthair. There are a large number of hotels that have not yet responded to the Department's requests to renew accommodation contracts, he told MP Alan Dillon, Fine Gael. Tá líon mór óstáin nár thug freagra fós ar iarratais na Roinne athnuachan a dhéanamh ar chonarthaí lóistín, a dúirt sé leis an teachta Alan Dillon, Fine Gael. "Although no hotel has rejected us yet," there are many hotels that have not yet made a decision and "there is a risk that we will lose those contracts," he said. "Cé nár dhiúltaigh aon óstán muid fós," tá a lán óstáin nach bhfuil cinneadh déanta acu fós agus "tá baol ann go gcaillidh muid na conarthaí sin," a dúirt sé. "Breathnóimis arís ar na dlíthe a bhaineann le madraí áirithe!". The legislation relating to certain types of dogs must be looked at again, said Taoiseach Micheál Martin. Ní foláir breathnú arís ar an reachtaíocht a bhaineann le cineálacha áirithe madraí, a dúirt an Taoiseach Micheál Martin. The story concerns the vicious attack by a ferocious dog on a nine-year-old boy in Co. Wexford last weekend. Baineann an scéal leis an ionsaí fíochmhar a rinne madra drochmhianaigh ar bhuachaill naoi mbliana d'aois i gCo Loch Garman an deireadh seachtaine seo caite. The dog that attacked the boy - Alejandro Mizsan - was a type of bull terrier while he was out playing with his friends in Enniscorthy last Sunday afternoon. Cineál tarbh-bhrocaire a bhí sa mhadra a thug fogha faoin mbuachaill - Alejandro Mizsan - agus é ag amuigh ag súgradh in éineacht lena chairde in Inis Córthaidh tráthnóna Dé Domhnaigh seo caite. Fortunately, neighbors managed to pry the dog away from Alejandro but the poor boy was badly injured by then. Ar ámharaí an tsaoil, d'éirigh le comharsana an madra a shracadh de Alejandro ach bhí an buachaill bocht loite go dona faoin am sin. Speaking in the Dáil, the Taoiseach said he was thinking of the boy and his family. Ag labhairt dó sa Dáil, dúirt an Taoiseach go raibh sé ag cuimhneamh ar an mbuachaill agus a mhuintir. He indicated that everyone in Dáil Éireann was shocked - and also angry - because of what had happened. Thug sé le fios go raibh gach duine i nDáil Éireann suaite - agus feargach freisin - de bharr ar tharla. He also said that he did not understand why people had dangerous dogs. Dúirt sé chomh maith nár thuig sé cén fáth a raibh madraí dainséaracha ag daoine. The laws relating to those dogs must be looked at from the ground up again, he said. Caithfear breathnú ó bhonn arís ar na dlíthe a bhaineann leis na madraí sin, arsa sé. Micheál Martin was responding to Deputy Dála Alan Dillon from Fine Gael who said that 1,700 dogs attacked people in this country between 2016 and 2021, a significant increase from the previous five years. Ag tabhairt freagra a bhí Micheál Martin ar an Teachta Dála Alan Dillon ó Fhine Gael a dúirt go ndearna madraí 1,700 ionsaí ar dhaoine sa tír seo idir 2016 agus 2021, ar ardú suntasach an méid sin ó na cúig bliana roimhe sin.

DairyBeef 500 campaign manager, Alan Dillon, joins Catherine Egan on this week's Beef Edge podcast to review the key messages from Beef2022 for dairy beef farmers; plus he discusses the lessons learned from the Green Acres Programme and outlines the new five year DairyBeef 500 campaign that was launched recently. Alan first explained how building a sustainable dairy-beef system was highlighted at Beef2022 by incorporating grass, genetics and herd health to support an economic and environmentally sustainable system. The Green Acres programme has now drawn to a close and analysis of the past three years' data showed a net margin increase from €100/ha to €650/ha (excluding subsidies). Live weight output increased from 994 kg/ha in 2019 to 1,427 kg/ha in 2021. Over the course of the programme, grass production increased by 19%, while there was a huge focus on silage and DMD increased by 4% units, helping achieve an ADG of 0.6 kg over first winter.  The indoor winter periods were identified as being the main area for improvement on farms.  The average number of source herds reduced from 10 farms to 6, resulting in improved calf health, while the genetic merit improved slightly across calves purchased, it is the most difficult area to improve. The DairyBeef 500 campaign was launched recently with a target of €500/ha net profit and Alan outlines all that is to be achieved over the next five years.  The Ballyvadin demonstration farm will be a key component of the campaign located in Fethard Co. Tipperary. 300 calves will be purchased and a heifer and steer finishing system will be operated comprising of a number of breeds.  Farmers will get an opportunity to visit the farm and see the progress being made. The DairyBeef 500 farmers are located across the country and there will be four new farms added in addition to the rollover of farmers from the Green acres programme. There will be a number of courses arranged over the campaign for farmers to attend along with regional discussion groups and further details will be available on the Teagasc website and social media channels. For more information, go to:https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/beef/dairy-calf-to-beef/dairybeef-500/  For more episodes from the Beef Edge podcast, visit the show page at:https://www.teagasc.ie/thebeefedge     Produced on behalf of Teagasc by LastCastMedia.com
