Huddle up, y’all. We’ve recently realized that the whole world has been using the word ‘epic’ way too loosely. We realized this after attending the party that seemed to never stop over this past weekend. We know you heard about it. You were probably at the bar with us! DJ D-Nice, founding member of Boogie Down Productions, and beloved turntablist all over the world, hosted a virtual party so EPIC that it brought us all together in a way that only good music and a GREAT DJ can do. So, of course we had to talk to the music man himself and get the scoop on how it all started. He’s so humble! And this convo - along with the way he brought us together in a time of international crisis - is solidified as an official Yes, Girl! Favorite. We hope you enjoy as much as we did. This episode is like a meditation and TED Talk rolled into one. In our studio, Omarion dropped knowledge on everything from being a role model for other men, to his 20+ year music career, his friendship with Bow Wow, and what he’s looking for in a partner (Hint: Friendship is key, ladies!).So how are you staying calm and unbothered? It takes a village to raise a child, and some women are blessed with the gift of motherhood with children they did not conceive. For Tonii Turner, she found incredible joy in raising her niece and nephew as her own. She found fulfillment through them and continued to live a joyous and complete life, that was until his life October 14, 2017 when Akeem’s life was ended over a petty argument. Our bonus installment of Through Her Eyes brings the story of a mother who finds her life completely turned upside for the second time but this time picking up the pieces is not simple. Tyquan, 20, was shot and killed in the 200 block of South 11th Street on Dec. 28, 2015. He had been the third and remaining son of Sonia Rogers to be murdered in the streets of Newark, NJ. Between 2011 to 2015 Anthony, Antonie then finally Tyquan had all provided their mother with a front seat to her personal hell, being murdered with no justice. From having to take her eldest child off of life support, to getting that gut wrenching call saying her baby boy was now dead too, Sonia has bravely faced a lifetime of heartbreak in a short amount of time. After becoming a mother at 15, Sonia placed her youth and dreams on hold to be the best mother she could.. Many of the people close to her can agree that Sonia was a caring but strict mother who did everything in her power to provide for her children. Being a single mother in Newark was not always easy and even with all of her efforts, the glamour and the streets were enough to pull Anthony and Antoine in. Now with them gone, Sonia has been focusing on getting justice for her sons and stopping the violence in Newark. It’s very sad when a mother has to bury her children, but it’s even worse when you feel like no one cares. As long as she has breath in her body, Sonia will continue to fight to keep her son's memory alive and will continue to seek the justice they deserve. As a mother, we bare the world on our shoulders alone to give our young a fighting chance in this world. For Sharon Bagley, her son Malcolm was giving his mother her shining moments in the sun as a college student and a football star and was finding his footing on a very bright path. He was going above and beyond to make his mother and the town of Orange New Jersey proud as they watched his success proudly from the stands. They never got a chance to see their hometown hero live up to his expectations as his life was tragically stolen on May, 27 2012 only blocks away from where he spent his whole life. Sharon gives Episode 3 a new spin as she chooses to focus on the greatness her son brought to the world, instead of the evils that took him out. This episode brings another incredible mothers’ story of crippling loss coupled with insurmountable pain and the road to forgiveness. Most children are raised with the notion that one day they will surpass their parents in life using the knowledge and lessons passed down through generations. Trina Jones was no different, in fact her son Amazing Joy was surpassing her expectations not only being a gifted child, but possessing the kindness, warmth and care for others that most parents pray their children grow to have, only to have his life stripped away as it was beginning. On July 15, 2018 Trina Jones lost her only son Amazing Joy, or best known as AJ to the harsh realities that our young black men face growing up in the cold urban streets. As Trina so bravely shares the details surrounding his death, she also shares her grief over the injustices faced in our unbalanced legal system. Episode 2 highlights unconditional love, harrowing lost and the pursuit of closure as another mother details her journey to closure. Stay with us as we bring you an additional tale of how mothers courageously fight for change against the impossible odds.
