Most early-stage founders I talk to are focused on getting their first customers, hiring their first employees, or maybe, if they're lucky, closing their first round of funding. But what happens after that? For Rohit Choudhary, the answer was building a whole new category. Rohit is the CEO and co-founder of Acceldata, a data observability platform that helps companies manage the complexity of modern data infrastructure. Before starting the company, he spent years inside the problem — working on data engineering challenges at Hortonworks and other enterprise tech firms. Like a lot of technical founders, Rohit didn't start out dreaming of being a CEO — but the problem was too big to ignore. In this episode, we talk about: Why data engineering lacked the right tooling and how that led to Acceldata How his team validated the concept with real-world customer pain points The trade-offs of building in stealth mode vs. in public What he's learned about hiring, scaling, and making the leap from engineer to CEO If you're trying to figure out how to go from technical insight to scalable business, this one's for you. RUNTIME 37:37 EPISODE BREAKDOWN (2:16) “ There are four of us co-founders, and we were all part of the same engineering team at Hortonworks.” (4:33) “ We felt that here was a unique opportunity for us to be able to build something really, really large and big.” (6:16) How Acceldata approached proof-of-concept programs in its early days. (8:23) “ How did you decide which one of you would become the CEO?” (11:31) Rohit's seed-stage recruiting strategy: “ we had to excite them with the long-term vision.” (14:35) “ People like me, we learned how to sell despite coming from an engineering background.” (16:46) Why the co-founders “took a leap of faith” by formalizing their sales process early. (18:46) “ We were familiar with how business is conducted in the U.S.,” which made expansion easier. (21:08) Early challenges they faced after closing a Series A. (23:08) How “a big mistake” from a previous startup still influences Rohit's choices today. (25:30) Wondering if it's time to throw in the towel? Do a self-assessment. (28:31) Three core skills engineers need to acquire if they want to become effective CEOs. (31:39) “ I used to interview almost everyone until we were at about, you know, 170-180.” (33:82) How creating a 10-year strategy informed their day-to-day decision making. (36:27) The one question he'd have to ask the CEO in an interview before he could accept an offer. Cree Lawson combined his curiosity for technology with his career in the travel industry to create Travel Ad Network, which connects advertisers with travel-related audiences online. Travel advertisers were frustrated with the inability to track whether ad viewers actually visited the destinations they promoted, so Cree figured out a solution and started his second travel tech venture. Arrivalist was created in 2012 to provide offline visitor tracking and analytics to online advertisers in the travel industry. They bootstrapped and grew efficiently, with some revenue-based financing from Lighter Capital, not requiring big outside equity funding to build out their platform and acquire new customers. They grew steadily and became was through 2019. After the COVID travel disruption faded, Cree sold Arrivalist to Alpine Investors, owners of AirDNA, another travel data company. John is no longer the CEO of Arrivalist, but he is still involved in the company as a board member and spokesperson. Quote from Cree Lawson, Founder of Arrivalist “New entrepreneurs need to answer three questions to see if they have a real business. Can you do it? Will people pay you to do it? Will you get paid more than it costs to do it? You can answer those without spending a lot of money. “Once you answer those three questions, you are off and running. I could answer those questions at Arrivalist, and we didn't need to raise outside funding. Bootstrapping was a bad word in 2011. People told me to stop calling myself a bootstrapper, but it worked well for us.” Links Cree Lawson on LinkedIn Arrivalist on LinkedIn AirDNA website Alpine Investors Podcast Sponsor – Full Scale This week's podcast is sponsored by Full Scale, one of the fastest-growing software development companies in any region. In this episode, we talk to Maxime Meijers and Nicolas Meijers, co-founders of Estuaire, who share insights into their innovative data platform that provides comprehensive climate impact assessments for the aviation industry.Maxime and Nicolas share:The development of Estuaire's data platform, which fuses various data sources to provide granular and exhaustive climate impact modelling for individual flights. The significant impact of non-CO2 emissions, particularly contrails, which can represent an additional 30% climate impact on top of CO2 emissions. The importance of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in reducing both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions, and Estuaire's approach to optimising SAF allocation for maximum climate benefit. The surprising finding that only 2% of flights are responsible for 80% of aviation's contrail warming effect, and how Estuaire's technology helps identify these high-impact flights. The potential for airlines to achieve significant climate savings through small changes in flight operations, such as slight altitude adjustments to avoid contrail-prone areas.Throughout the conversation, Maxime and Nicolas emphasise the unique transparency of the aviation sector and how Estuaire leverages this data to drive actionable insights for airlines, airports, and other stakeholders in the aviation ecosystem. Looking to the future, they discuss their ambitious goal of having 10 major airlines successfully implement contrail mitigation programs within the next year, showcasing the potential for rapid progress in sustainable aviation practices. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Alejandra Martín Frías, Head of Sustainability Research at FLIGHTKEYS, who shares insights into the company's research on contrail avoidance and its potential impact on aviation sustainability. Summary Building a data platform is a substrantial engineering endeavor. Once it is running, the next challenge is figuring out how to address release management for all of the different component parts. The services and systems need to be kept up to date, but so does the code that controls their behavior. In this episode your host Tobias Macey reflects on his current challenges in this area and some of the factors that contribute to the complexity of the problem. Announcements Hello and welcome to the Data Engineering Podcast, the show about modern data management This episode is supported by Code Comments, an original podcast from Red Hat. As someone who listens to the Data Engineering Podcast, you know that the road from tool selection to production readiness is anything but smooth or straight. In Code Comments, host Jamie Parker, Red Hatter and experienced engineer, shares the journey of technologists from across the industry and their hard-won lessons in implementing new technologies. I listened to the recent episode "Transforming Your Database" and appreciated the valuable advice on how to approach the selection and integration of new databases in applications and the impact on team dynamics. There are 3 seasons of great episodes and new ones landing everywhere you listen to podcasts. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I want to talk about my experiences managing the QA and release management process of my data platform Interview Introduction As a team, our overall goal is to ensure that the production environment for our data platform is highly stable and reliable. This is the foundational element of establishing and maintaining trust with the consumers of our data. In order to support this effort, we need to ensure that only changes that have been tested and verified are promoted to production. Our current challenge is one that plagues all data teams. We want to have an environment that mirrors our production environment that is available for testing, but it's not feasible to maintain a complete duplicate of all of the production data. Compounding that challenge is the fact that each of the components of our data platform interact with data in slightly different ways and need different processes for ensuring that changes are being promoted safely. William Simonin is the c-founder of Ta-da - a data platform for AI. Projected to reach $109B by 2032, the data collection market is primed for disruption. Ta-da offers high-quality data at lower costs, outperforming outsourcing and micro-tasking companies with a hybrid model that ensures quality, cost-effectiveness and scalability. Why you should listen Data is the new oil. Several growth factors are present in the data market, one of them being artificial intelligence, a big consumer of data. By 2032, the data collection market will experience a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 25%, meaning that the market will grow from $63 billion to $109 billion dollars. Ta-da is innovating an old data collection technique, crowdsourcing, to collect and validate data through their community, at a price you choose. Ta-da specializes in Voice Recordings, Images, Videos, Text, and labeling to cater to user data collection needs. Companies can get more accurate AI models with custom datasets at a fair price. Although the data collection market is promising, it still relies on mechanisms and technologies that can be improved. There is a market with great potential which is still based on outdated processes. In this context, Ta-da aims to become the first decentralized web3 micro-tasking data collection platform on the blockchain. Ta-da is a solution that enables cost-effective, high-quality, and diversified data collection. Their web and mobile application allows users to provide data that meets precise criteria through our clients. Ta-da offers flexibility by enabling companies to specify and customize their requirements in detail. The Ta-da platform promises traceability of the production and verification process, as well as fair remuneration of the community via its TADA token. Their goal is to establish Ta-da as the standard for data collection. As per usual, all guests were only reflecting their own views. The topic for this panel was how to treat your data platform as a product. While many people in the data space are talking about data products, not nearly as many are treating the platform used for creating and managing those data products as a product itself. This is about moving beyond the IT services model for your data work. Platforms have life-cycles and need product management principles too! Also, in data mesh, it is crucial to understand that 'platform' can be plural, it doesn't have to be one monolithic platform, users don't care.Scott note: As per usual, I...
