Frank Auerbach was sent to Britain from Nazi Germany by his parents at the age of 8. Growing up in a Quaker boarding school in Kent, he developed his artistic talents - later to be inspired by the landscapes of war-torn London in the Blitz. Worrying about how he would afford paint for much of his career, an Auerbach piece now commands a price tag in the millions. He has developed a reputation as a recluse - rarely giving interviews, or even attending his own exhibitions. Now, his wartime art 'The Charcoal Heads' is on display in London. Who is the 92-year-old artist still working seven days a week? Stephen Smith gets beneath the paint layers to learn more about one of our greatest living artists. We explore the distinction between the pornographic and the erotic in relation to memoir writing, and discuss the process of revealing and concealment when writing from lived experience. We chat about the importance of images and symbols in articulating trauma, with reference to Louise Bourgeois' 'Spiral Woman' as a symbol which holds contradictions within recovery. In episode 1 of Quarantine Genius, we look at the effect of the plague on Shakespeare's life, work and legacy. The playwright/actor faced at least four outbreaks in his lifetime and his profession was continually disrupted by disease. In 1606, Shakespeare was lodging above a swanky hat-shop in London when plague struck yet again. This time, his lockdown schedule would lead him to write one of the greatest tragedies in the English language. (Written, produced and presented by Lucinda Smyth. Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. In this inaugeral episode, Deborah Francis-White (super star of BBC R4 and co-creator and host of the incredible smash hit podcast ‘The Guilty Feminist’), talks about giant fridge ambition and having definitely had a gay time. The liquor was from Hotel Chocolat and here’s the recipe I used for the banana bread, but I mixed the walnuts into the mixture before baking instead of tipping them all on the roof at the end. A 'mini-cow' breed that stands at just 4 feet in height and thrives on poor quality upland areas, is making a comeback in Ireland. The Dexter breed is native to the country but until recent years, numbers were very low. One of the farmers who's rejuvenating this breed is Dr. Steve Collins from Bedfordshire. He spent most of his life working on humanitarian projects in Africa . Today, he lives on a remote 140 acre farm in West Cork. I travelled high up into the mountains to meet him and his herd of little Dexter cows.
