Italy's recent elections have seen the rise of the “Brothers of Italy” party led by Giorgia Meloni. Billed as “center right”, the Brothers of Italy have raised several alarms. With Meloni at the head of a coalition whose other members include Matteo Salvini's League and Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia, these members were each once the main force on Italy's populist right. In the words of today's guest Professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat, the Brothers of Italy have “an underlying and sinister familiarity.” Although fascism is not an exclusively Italian problem. The world is going through a kind of fascist renaissance and the United States isn't immune. Ruth Ben-Ghiat joins us to sound the alarm on rising forces in American politics including Donald Trump and everyone's favorite wanna be dictator Gov. 7 sick days a year & a fair schedule. That is all the Railroad workers of the United States have asked for.Despite this, President Biden and Congress have seen fit to force a contract on the railroaders. Both the Senate and House voted for the contract. However, 52 senators (all of which have unlimited sick time and make $174,000) saw fit to vote down the sick time amendment to the contract. This left all the rail workers stuck with a hellish scheduling system (Precision Scheduled Railroading) and a contract that the rank and file have resoundingly rejected over and over.To really understand this battle, we needed to call in support. Luckily, friend-of-the-show Dr. Andrea Haverkamp came in clutch. Andrea takes us all the way back to some of the earliest railroad strikes in US history to help us get the whole perspective of the incredibly nuanced topic.Dr. Haverkamp is a Labor organizer for the American Federation of Teachers as well as a professor of Climate justice, queer student experiences in STEM, and engineering ethics at the University of San Diago. She has extensive experience in workplace organizing in higher education and healthcare, as well as coalition political organizing for environmental and social justice in the Pacific Northwest. Her research and teaching centers intersectional queer, trans, and feminist frameworks and an organizing approach towards social transformation. Her primary topics of research and teaching are climate justice, trans and gender nonconforming student experiences in STEM, and engineering ethics. Her engineering experience prior to academia and the labor movement includes environmental engineering positions in the federal government, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She has also served as a chemistry and physics high school teacher in Kolahun, Liberia in the Peace Corps.Dr. Haverkamp holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering with a doctoral minor in Queer Studies, a graduate certificate in College and University Teaching, and a Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering from Oregon State University. She also holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kansas. The whole Rik's Mind family wants to express our HUGE support for the railroaders in this fight against the Feds. The Club of Rome's Till Kellerhoff: Earth4All and The Limits to Growth | Rik's Mind Ep 110

Global Warming is the biggest reckoning the human race has yet to encounter. As the United States is still caught in the throes of denial of climate change and “doom & gloom” reigns, there are groups that are trying to solve this problem. One of those groups is the Club of Rome. Building on their groundbreaking report “The Limits to Growth”, released in 1972, the Club has convened a new group to help humanity grow out of our fossil fuel addiction. Their new report “Earth4All” started as a vibrant collective of leading economic thinkers, scientists, and advocates, convened by The Club of Rome, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the Stockholm Resilience Centre and the Norwegian Business School. With more and more people and organisations joining, Earth4All has become a platform to connect and amplify the chorus of voices that want to upgrade our economies. We are not starting from scratch. The momentum is growing. Communities and policy makers across the world are already changing the way we think about economics. Earth4All builds on the legacies of The Limits to Growth and the Planetary Boundaries frameworks. Science is at the heart of their work. They rethink capitalism and move beyond GDP for a safe, secure and prosperous future in the Anthropocene. To help us work our way through Earth4All, we are joined by the Club of Rome's Till Kellerhoff. Till is the Program Director of the Club of Rome and Coordinator & National Engagement Lead of the Earth4All initiative as well as contributing author of Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity. Before joining The Club of Rome, he studied Politics, Economics and International Relations at the University of Erfurt (Germany), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Mexico) and the London School of Economics (UK). He is mostly working on themes around "Rethinking Economics" and concepts around societal wellbeing for all within planetary boundaries. You can follow Till on his Twitter @TKellerhoff and the Club of Rome on their twitter @ClubOfRome. About the Club of Rome: Most influential organizations begin with the meeting of a few like minds. In 1965, Aurelio Peccei, an Italian industrialist, made a speech that proved inspirational to Alexander King, the Scottish Head of Science at the OECD. The two found that they shared a profound concern for the long-term future of humanity and the planet, what they termed the modern ‘predicament of mankind'.Three years later, King and Peccei convened a meeting of European scientists in Rome. Although this first attempt failed to achieve unity, a core group of like-minded thinkers emerged. Their goal: to advance three core ideas that still define the Club of Rome today: a global and a long-term perspective, and the concept of “problematique”, a cluster of intertwined global problems, be they economic, environmental, political or social. At the group's first major gathering in 1970, Jay Forrester, a systems professor at MIT, offered to use computer models he had developed to study the complex problems which concerned the group more rigorously. An international team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology began a study of the implications of unbridled exponential growth. They examined the five basic factors that determine and, in their interactions, ultimately limit growth on this planet – population, agricultural production, non-renewable resource depletion, industrial output and pollution. In 1972, the Club's first major Report, The Limits to Growth was published. It sold millions of copies worldwide, creating media controversy and also impetus for the global sustainability movement. This call for objective, scientific assessment of the impact of humanity's behavior and use of resources, still defines the Club of Rome today. While Limits had many messages, it fundamentally confronted the unchallenged paradigm of continuous material growth and the pursuit of endless economic expansion. Fifty years later, there is no doubt that the ecological footprint of humanity substantially exceeds its natural limits every year. The concerns of the Club of Rome have not lost their relevance. Today, the Club continues to be at the forefront of challenging and controversial global issues. Propelled by a new mission and organisational structure, which today includes 35 National Associations, the Club of Rome has now published over 45 Reports. They continue to challenge established paradigms and advocate for policies that can practically address the many emergencies facing society and the planet today. The Club remains true to its historical intent, while it attempts to lay the foundations for long-term systemic shifts in global social, environmental and economic systems. In short, it is an established, respected, international think-tank positioned to face the core challenges of the 21st Century. The organization includes around 100 active full members with a full-time secretariat in Winterthur, Switzerland with a satellite office in Brussels, Belgium.Like and subscribe to us on Youtube for more fun and exclusive content!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuM080VqVCe0gAns9V9WK9wSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/00gCjGhq8qrAEkraZnMwGR?go=1&sp_cid=ce203d55369588581151ec13011b84ac&utm_source=embed_player_pGoogle Podcast: https://podcasts.google.com/u/1/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cucmlrc21pbmQuY29tL2xpc3Rlbj9mb3JtYXQ9cnNz?Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riks-mind-podcast/id1460215365Show Notes:The Club of Rome | Official Website Earth4All | Official WebsiteThe Club of Rome | TwitterThe Club of Rome | YoutubeTill Kellerhoff | TwitterTill Kellerhoff's Articles | The Club of RomeThe Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) | Official WebsiteThe Limits to Growth | The Club of RomeWhat the controversial 1972 ‘Limits to Growth' report got right: Our choices today shape future conditions for life on Earth by Matthew E. Rik Picked a hell of a week to go hunting. While our fearless leader was out in the woods chasing elk, Twitter was imploding and the predicted “Red Wave” of republican voters didn't show up to the polls. The Republican strategy of promoting election fraud has backfired. The Democrats (as of now with the Georgia run-off to come) are retaining control of the Senate and the Republicans have taken the House, but only by a slim margin of 7 seats. The GOP seems to be in the midst of a civil war between Trump and DeSantis, setting up a contentious 2024 Election cycle. Meanwhile, everyone's favorite billionaire Daddy Musk has been turning Twitter into a dumpster fire. Firing 7k people within the first week. Most of those being his entire content moderation team and engineers who actually built Twitter. Surprise to everyone this has caused chaos. Uses of N-word on Twitter jumped by almost 500% in the few days following his takeover and the Twitter Blue plan has backfired in spectacular fashion. During the early days of the Cold War, the CIA became convinced that the Soviets had discovered how to control the human mind. In response, the American CIA began its own secret program, called MK-ULTRA, to search for a drug that could weaponize the human mind against America and capitalism's enemies.MK-ULTRA, in operation from the 1950s until the early '60s, was created and run by a chemist named Sidney Gottlieb. Today's guest journalist and author Stephen Kinzer, who spent several years investigating the program for his book “Poisoner in Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control”, calls the operation the "most sustained search in history for techniques of mind control." Stephen Kinzer is an award-winning foreign correspondent who has covered more than 50 countries on five continents. His articles and books have led the Washington Post to place him "among the best in popular foreign policy storytelling."Kinzer spent more than 20 years working for the New York Times, most of it as a foreign correspondent. His foreign postings placed him at the center of historic events and, at times, in the line of fire. From 1983 to 1989, Kinzer was the New York Times bureau chief in Nicaragua. In that post he covered war and upheaval in Central America. He also wrote two books about the region. One of them, co-authored with Stephen Schlesinger, is Bitter Fruit: The Untold Story of the American Coup in Guatemala. The other one, Blood of Brothers: Life and War in Nicaragua, is a social and political portrait that the New Yorker called "impressive for the refinement of its writing and also the breadth of its subject matter." Columbia University awarded Kinzer its Maria Moors Cabot prize for outstanding coverage of Latin America. From 1990 to 1996 Kinzer was posted in Germany. He was chief of the New York Times bureau in Bonn, and after German unification became chief of the Berlin bureau. From there he covered the emergence of post-Communist Europe, including wars in the former Yugoslavia. In 1996 Kinzer was named chief of the newly opened New York Times bureau in Istanbul, Turkey. He spent four years there, traveling widely in Turkey and in the new nations of Central Asia and the Caucasus. After completing this assignment, Kinzer published Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds. In 2006 Kinzer published Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq. It recounts the 14 times the United States has overthrown foreign governments. Kinzer seeks to explain why these interventions were carried out and what their long-term effects have been. He has made several trips to Iran, and is the author of All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror. It tells how the CIA overthrew Iran's nationalist government in 1953.Kinzer wrote about Africa in his book A Thousand Hills: Rwanda's Rebirth and the Man Who Dreamed It. Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa called it "a fascinating account of a near-miracle unfolding before our very eyes.”In 2010 Kinzer published Reset: Iran, Turkey, and America's Future, which Huffington Post called “a bold exercise in reimagining the United States' big links in the Middle East.”Kinzer's next book, The Brothers: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War, was widely praised. Reviewers called it sparkling, riveting, gripping, bracing, and disturbing. The Wall Street Journal called it a “fluently written, ingeniously researched, thrillerish work of popular history.”In 2017 Kinzer published The True Flag: Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the Birth of American Empire. His newest book, published in 2019, is "Poisoner in Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control." After leaving the Times in 2005, Kinzer taught journalism, political science, and international relations at Northwestern University and Boston University. The parallels between now and the Great Depression are numerous. You've no doubt felt the pressure of inflation, rising food prices and the rampant corporate profiteering over the last year. Today economic historian Rick Fair joins us to help us to cut through the noise and figure out what's going on by looking at what's already happened. Rick Fair is an economic historian and practicing attorney at law. He has practiced as a tax attorney for 6 years, primarily assisting clients with structuring high-net-worth business, estate, real estate, and tax transactions. Fair is licensed by the State Bar of Texas and a Circular 230 Attorney with the Internal Revenue Service.Rick has also worked as an adjunct professor for approximately 10 years, holding a Masters of Arts in American History and primarily studying economic history, with a specific focus on the causes of the Great Depression. Fair has also studied the intersection of violence, race, and economics in late 19th, early 20th century Texas.Additionally, Rick routinely studies and gives lectures on ghost lore, folklore, and its connection to society via economics, demographics, and geography. This area of interest has led Rick and his wife to begin a podcast called “Spooky Context.” In this podcast, they discuss common forms of folklore and ghost lore in the Southwest, while examining the stories under an academic lens. Dr. Briefer is an associate professor of Ecology and Evolution as well as the principal investigator of the Behavioral Ecology Group of the University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet). A modern-day ‘Dr. Doolittle', Dr. Briefer's primary research interests are cognition and vocal communication in mammals and birds. The main aims of her research are understanding how animals use vocal signals to encode information about their identity (e.g. species, group, individual identity), their quality (e.g. body size, dominance status, age) and their affective states (emotions, mood), as well as the impact of such information on conspecifics. The ultimate goal of this research is to be able to create a universal translator that would allow humans to truly communicate with our animal brethren. Joanne began her studies at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where she received a B.S. in Microbiology and worked at a campus science outreach program. This spurred her inspiration to teach science. She studied the neural development of fruit fly embryos at University of Oregon, where she earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. During her first faculty position at Metropolitan State College of Denver, she developed an undergraduate research program in insect bacterial symbiosis. Joanne earned a Golden Key award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013. Currently, at Pacific University, she studies the evolution of symbiosis. Her model system is the charismatic association of Wolbachia bacteria within carabid beetles. She combines her interests in biology, travel and education by leading travel courses for undergraduate students to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.Show Notes:Joanne Odden, PhD | Pacific UniversitySymbiosis: The Art of Living Together | National GeographicExploitation and Cooperation by Cleaner Wrasse | University of Miami Shark ResearchEpigenetic Memory | NatureWolbachia | ScienceDirectFacts about tardigrades | LiveScienceGenus Bembidion | BugGuideI Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life by Ed Young | AmazonMiller Moths | Colorado State University Extension Service Consuming Creepy-Crawlies | TerroTiny animals survive exposure to space | European Space AgencyHow the Zombie Fungus Takes Over Ants' Bodies to Control Their Minds | The Atlantic

Episode 82- Killah Priest: Rapper & Wu-Tang Killah Bee on Music, history & conspiracies

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2022

Today we are joined by the man, the myth, the legend Killah Priest. Brooklyn rapper Killah Priest has spent his lengthy, respected career making intensely spiritual music that connects Gnostic religious philosophy with the contemporary Black struggle. He made his first appearances on several Wu-Tang Clan side and solo projects, including albums by Gravediggaz, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Genius/GZA, leading to the signing of his group Sunz of Man and the release of his acclaimed debut album, 1998's Heavy Mental. After leaving the major-label system, he went independent with 2001's Priesthood, and became an integral member of supergroups the HRSMN (aka the Four Horsemen) and Black Market Militia. He's continued releasing ambitious, metaphor-heavy solo albums such as 2007's The Offering and 2013's The Psychic World of Walter Reed, and produced some of the most experimental, spiritually advanced work of his career with later works such as 2020's Rocket to Nebula. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville, Killah Priest (Walter Reed) became infatuated with hip-hop as a child, listening to old-school and new-school acts alike. He also was influenced by local figures Genius and Onyx's DJ Suave, who would often play local parties. Killah Priest began working on his rhyming and eventually earned a considerable reputation in his neighborhood, but instead of furthering his musical career, he took a sabbatical to educate himself, primarily about religion and history, which had a major impact on his songwriting. Priest made his return to rap in 1994, appearing on several Wu-Tang projects including Gravediggaz' 6 Feet Deep, Ol' Dirty Bastard's Return to the 36 Chambers, and Genius/GZA's seminal Liquid Swords. All of his cameos were noteworthy, but his role on Liquid Swords -- especially "B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth)," essentially a Priest solo track -- earned special attention. By the end of 1996, his own group, Sunz of Man, was off the ground, having become the first act signed to Wu-Tang Records. In 1997, GZA suggested to Geffen that they should sign Priest, and the label took his advice. Priest worked on his debut solo album with True Master and 4th Disciple, two producers who were also associated with Wu-Tang. The resulting album, Heavy Mental, was dense with religious imagery and filled with evocative sounds. It received excellent reviews upon its March 1998 release and was a respectable commercial success, debuting at number 24 on the Billboard 200. Priest issued his second album, View from Masada, in May 2000, further bolstering his status as one of the most compelling solo artists in the extended Wu-Tang family (even though, at the time, he was disconnected from the crew). Although View from Masada was well-received, it failed to do well commercially, and he was dropped from his label. While many rappers let go from a major-label either vanish or take years to resurface, Priest wasted no time and established his own imprint. July 2001's Priesthood, involving no Wu-Tang input whatsoever, was produced by Luminati and Nirocist, and released on the MC's Proverbs imprint. July 2003's Black August, however, came out on Recon. Although he certainly wasn't silent after this -- Black Market Militia (featuring Tragedy Khadafi and Hell Razah), the HRSMN (featuring Ras Kass, Kurupt, and Canibus), and Sunz of Man were ongoing concerns -- a few years passed before Priest's next solo album. March 2007's The Offering appeared on the Traffic-distributed Good Hands Records. His release schedule picked up considerably -- Behind the Stained Glass, Black August Revisited, and Beautiful Minds, the latter a full-length collaboration with Chief Kamachi, were all released in 2008. The Exorcist, Elizabeth, and several mixtapes appeared in 2009. The 3 Day Theory, featuring guest appearances by several emcees including Cappadonna, Ill Bill, and the Last Emperor, was released by Man Bites Dog in 2010. Following several delays, Killah Priest returned in 2013 with the ambitious double-CD The Psychic World of Walter Reed, a reunion of sorts with the Wu-Tang family, featuring guest rhymes and production by GZA, RZA, Inspectah Deck, and Ghostface Killah, as well as an appearance by George Clinton. The more sci-fi-themed Planet of the Gods appeared in 2015, and Priest formed the group Moon Crickets with Toronto-based rapper Lord Fury and DJ Mercilless. The Infinite Universe, with Vendetta Kingz, was released in 2016, and the mixtapes Don't Sit on the Speakers, Vol. 1 (with 4th Disciple) and The Untold Story of Walter Reed, Pt. 2 appeared in 2017. A 2020 mixtape with frequent collaborator Jordan River Banks, Journey to the Planet of the Gods preceded one of Priest's deepest, most abstract releases, Rocket to Nebula, an often-beatless record filled with reversed samples and ambient textures. A proper album with Banks, The Third Eye in Technicolor, closed out the year. The cinematic Lord Sun Heavy Mental 1.1 appeared in March of 2021.Show Notes:Killah Priest | Official WebsiteKillah Priest TV | YoutubeKillah Priest | InstagramKillah Priest | TwitterKillah Priest Discography | DiscogsGhostface Killah | TwitterRZA | TwitterNature Knows No Color-Line: Research into the Negro Ancestry in the White Race by J.A. Particle Kid's new sprawling epic double-LP, ‘Time Capsule', released April 22, ‘22 via Overseas Artists Records, pulls listeners down the rabbit hole to experience the music he's been making over the past five years. His self-described “experimental future-folk solo project” takes listeners on a nearly two-hour trip through various genres, ideas and sounds. An eclectic palette of sonic colors, both familiar and exploratory feelings painted together like a collage, as if 90s alt, 60s psych, 70s electric jazz, and some abstract future were all magazines—chopped up and somehow cohesively glued together by Micah's voice and lyrics as well as guest spots from Margo Price, J Mascis and Sean Ono Lennon, among others. Micah Nelson's diverse releases as Particle Kid have taken an exploratory bent, combining lo-fi loops and strange textural elements with more straight forward Folk and Indie Rock songwriting. Micah, youngest son of country music icon Willie Nelson and occasional member of brother Lukas Nelson's band, ‘Promise of the Real', has been performing since his live debut at the age of 3, playing harmonica on stage with his dad. Movement helped Fjord build a sense of self-confidence and a unique and tangible relationship with my capabilities based on truth rather than frivolous and arbitrary metrics so commonly applied today. Loren works with hundreds of amazing humans from children as young as 6 to adults in their 70s, from all backgrounds and walks of life, testing varied approaches to reverse movement dysfunction and gain strength, flexibility and new skills to improve overall physical literacy. Oh shit it's another Fireside Chat!! Rik and Jon are loose and ready to riff. Rik spent the last week in New York City, Jon had a very interesting week, Rik is scared of Justin Trudeau, Jon says ‘Fuck NATO' with his whole chest and Rik gets us all a tight discount on Russian oil futures. Buckle up kiddos. We as a podcast also wanted to say something about all of the hate that people have been levying at average everyday Russians. Facebook has announced recently that they will ‘temporarily allow‘ any kind of hateful posts and content directed at Russia and Russian people. This is ABHORRENT. We are completely disgusted by this. Average Russians have nothing to do with the actions of their government, just the same as Americans have little to do with the actions of the American government. Hate on Vladimir Putin. Hate on the Russian and American oligarchs. Hate on NATO. Those are your enemies. Those are the people who are escalating this war. Fight for peace ON ALL FRONTS. Don't trust the media and don't trust what the American government and NATO are telling you. Don't be a fucking moron.Show Notes:The City That Never Sleeps (nickname) | Wikipedia New Mexico: state, United States | Encyclopædia BritannicaA Land So Strange: The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca | AmazonRT America ceases productions and lays off most of its staff | CNNYuan Jumps After Report on Saudis Weighing Its Use in Oil Deals | BloombergInflation Calculator, Find US Dollar's Value from 1913-2022 | US Inflation CalculatorRussia Asked China for Military and Economic Aid for Ukraine War, U.S. Officials Say | The New York Times1420 | YoutubeWhy the US scrapped Polish plans to give Ukraine fighter jets | VoxF-35 Lightning II | Lockheed Martin‘Turning point': War in Ukraine tests shaky US-China relations | Al Jazeera NewsBlack Mirror ‘White Christmas” | IMDb
