It's Christmas Eve at the time this podcast was released, but Seattle fans got their presents a couple days early. Marshawn Lynch, Seahawk icon who destroyed the New Orleans Saints in 2011 with the Beast Quake run, signed with Seattle this week after the team had to put Chris Carson on IR. Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson dive into the seismic news in Seattle, but first they address the Minnesota Vikings' soul-searching loss to the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. Is this the ceiling for Kirk Cousins, who has had a statistically impressive season, but has yet to carry any team over the hump in the playoffs? (0:15)Then, our experts dive into the running back news out of Seattle and wonder, if Pete Carroll has a 3rd or 4th & goal on the one-yard line this January, will he finally hand the ball off to Marshawn? (7:15)Looking ahead to this weekend, Charles & Terez wonder if the Philadelphia Eagles aren't primed for a trap game against the New York Giants, who put up huge offensive numbers last week and might want to play spoiler to their division nemesis. (11:45)For the bulk of the episode, the guys discuss the handful of coaches who are presumed to be coaching their last games this weekend. Are the likes of Pat Shurmur, Jason Garrett, Doug Marrone and Dan Quinn really on their way out, or are a few of those guys a strong win away from saving their jobs? Also, what about wild-card candidates like Freddie Kitchens and Anthony Lynn? (16:50)One team that won't be moving on from their coach, despite a disappointing season, is the Los Angeles Rams. Charles has some behind-the-scenes updates on a few different stories that will likely come out of the club this offseason. (45:50)Finally, the guys wrap the show up taking a listener question about the Denver Broncos future and a potential Derrick Henry landing spot (52:40).Stay up to date with the latest NFL news and coverage from Yahoo Sports on Twitter @YahooSportsNFL.Follow Charles @CharlesRobinsonFollow Terez @TerezPaylorTag your questions for the guys on Twitter with #YahooNFLPodcastCheck out the rest of the Yahoo Sports Podcast family at https://apple.co/2Abi8jk or at yahoosports.com/podcasts See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Tweet This episode we fire up the DeLorean and head back to explore the life and career of Bronko Nagurski, the original Monster of the Midway.  Bronko was one of the most feared runners and defenders of the early Chicago Bears.  He was famously known for one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, returning to the game after a 6 year hiatus.  He was also a world champion professional wrestler.  So strap on your seat belt, and let's get ready to take this baby up to 88mph.   Connect with the show: https://thefootballhistorydude.com/episode7 (Visit the show notes for this episode) https://thefootballhistorydude.com/about-the-show/ (Visit me on the web - my about page) https://thefootballhistorydude.com/contact/ (Contact the show) https://twitter.com/FHDude (Follow me on Twitter) Subscribe on YouTube   Click below for the transcript.  I have included affiliate links to Amazon throughout the transcript to complement the episode.  If you purchase through these links it will support the show at no extra cost to you. Read Full Transcript Introduction On January 8th, 2011 Marshawn Lynch (affiliate link) went full beast mode on one of the most legendary runs of all time. The 12th man crowd stomped so hard in excitement; it generated seismic activity mimicking an earthquake. In this episode, I'm going to tell you the name of the man that had a run that was a precursor to the famous "Beast Quake" (affiliate link). Intro Music Welcome to the Football History Dude Podcast, where each episode is a journey back in time to learn about the rich history of the NFL. Your host is Arnie Chapman. Football is his passion and he wants you to come along with him to explore the yesteryear of the gridiron. So hop on board his DeLorean and let's get this baby up to 88 miles per hour (Great Scott). Bronko's Early Life This time we step off the DeLorean and the date is November 3rd, 1908. We are in Rainy River, Ontario. Which happens to be a border town across International Falls, Minnesota. I hope that you brought your passport with you because we're going to the neighbors up to the north of us. The reason we're going up there is because our hero was born in Canada and his name was Bronislau Nagurski. Which is better known to you and me as, Bronko Nagurski (affiliate link). In the last solo episode we talked about Red Grange that had a Zeus-like lightning power to him. But this guy, Mr. Bronko, was a thundering, rumbling, hammer-wielding powerhouse of a man. Kind of reminds me of Madden. The game that most of you, many of you have probably played ever since the inception of the game and if you're like me purchase the new one each year. They don't have him in there anymore, but back in the day, it used to be him and a lot of times Pat Summerall and they would have these one-liners that in between plays you would get to hear the famous John Madden one-liners. One of my favorites was a total spot-on description of this guy. Lets paint a picture here; in Madden I got this dude running the ball, pressing the hit stick. I don't think they had the hit stick back then. This is an earlier rendition. Anyway, running the ball-smash. Jump cutscene to a huddle and then in the middle John Madden goes, “That guy worked as a bulldozer in the off season”. That right there would be the guy we're going to talk about, Mr. Bronko Nagurski. He was a road grader unlike the league had ever seen before. But we have to go a little bit back. We have to start this thing fresh and we have to go back to his childhood days - his early life. And one of the first things we talk about is how did this dude get the name Bronko? I thought his name was Bronislau. I might be butchering that a little bit, but just in case, because it's an audio for you- I'm just going to spell Bronislau. Reason why he had that name is because his parents, Michael and Emilia, were Ukrainian immigrants and farmers. I do not know how truthful this is,... Support this podcast

DesignSafe Radio host Dan Zehner catches up with Dr. John Vidale, renowned geophysicist and seismologist. Until recently, Vidale directed the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. Now he directs the Southern California Earthquake Center at USCCS. He discusses highlights of his research career. As a college physics student, he became enamored with geology – taking 11 geology courses in his senior year — and went on to study geophysics. He discusses the PNSN study called IMUSH, Imaging Magma Under St. Helens. His team uses various excitation sources to image and map the three-dimensional structure of underground features, including the large magma chamber, under Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams and Mount Rainer. It is the most comprehensive study of the geology under a chain of volcanos, involving numerous institutions and agencies. Also at the University of Washington, Vidale worked on the M9 Project (https://hazards.uw.edu/geology/m9/), a large, NSF-funded study exploring the potential impact of a large earthquake in the Pacific Northwest. (M9 stands for a “magnitude 9” earthquake.) Part of that PNSN study included measuring the vibrations made by Seattle Seahawks fans at CenturyLink Field (https://www.livescience.com/57441-seattle-seahawks-stadium-seismology.html)– which were especially strong after a play by Marshawn Lynch, the infamous Beast Quake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfdJqpbUPIE&t=8s). Vidale discusses streaming data real time and educating the public about earthquake warning systems. In his new job as director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, one project he’ll undertake is developing a physical model, a hazard map, of the Southern California fault system. A large, multi-institutional undertaking, the idea is to understand the geophysical properties of the region in order to predict behaviors of the earth. Vidale says supercomputing simulations play a major role in this work. For young scientists, Vidale recommends studying chemistry and physics and learning computer tools, which are crucial for modern science experiments. In general, he warns against fake science and extreme claims. He recommends vetting information about earthquakes with reputable agencies such as the United States Geological Service and local emergency managers.

Leadership Lessons from Beast Mode

I recently found one of the best examples of managing success and leadership that I’ve read in a long time. It did not come from a scion of enterprise. It came from NFL running back Marshawn Lynch, aka Beast Mode. I found the nugget of wisdom while reading American Way, the inflight magazine of American Airlines. At the time the NFL season was about to begin and the issue was dedicated to all things football. For those who don’t follow football (and for those that are not fans of Lynch/Seahawks, etc. I urge you to keep reading, too), Lynch is the running back for the Seattle Seahawks. He is generally recognized as one of the best, if not the best, running backs in the NFL. His nickname is Beast Mode. Originally given for his running style on the field, it has evolved into something larger than football. It’s more than just a name, it’s a state of being. Lynch provided a prime example of what Beast Mode means when he made this insane run against the New Orleans Saints in 2011.       Since then, his fame has grown, and the brand of Beast Mode with him. Many learned more about Lynch from the significant media attention he received during the 2014-2015 season. Lynch often refused to engage in media interviews, being fined by the NFL, and then ultimately answering each question during an interview at the Super Bowl with “I’m here so I won’t get fined.”       Some loved it and some hated  it. There was a lot of coverage about who his actions and his responsibilities as a player. But few took the time during the hoopla to dig into who he really is as a person. Cue the American Way interview. The article was a deep dive into Lynch as a person off the field. He is dedicated to his community where he grew up in Oakland, CA. In particular, the article connected what the infamous run (aka Beast Quake) means in the larger context of Lynch’s life. The article states: For Lynch, the run represented more than a fabulous football play. The effort and determination it took was a reflection of his effort to lift himself out of a tough North Oakland neighborhood, where he was raised in a single-parent household. “My mom worked three jobs at a time and supported four kids on her own,” Lynch says. “We had no father figure. I never thought about the NFL because I’d never seen it done. That run symbolizes the way that I feel with my life, growing up to my career right now.” Beast Mode worked hard to get where he is. There is no doubting it, especially for the top running back who has spent countless hours in the gym, watching film, enduring interviews, etc. This run could mean the culmination of individual effort to get to the top of his profession. We hear this much in sports, and life generally. An individual’s success is due to their effort, skill and experience. This is not denied. The narrative often stops there.  But not with Beast Mode. He elaborated on what the run really means for him: “The significant thing about that play is you will see me doing a lot of work,” he says, “but you’ve got to remember there was an offensive line that beat me to the end zone. There were two receivers making key blocks. As much as people want to give me credit, it was my support system that actually made it happen. When I say that run symbolizes my life and my career, it’s the absolute truth about how I really feel. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got, and if I need help along the way, I’m going to ask for it.” Beast Mode recognizes that his success is more than just his individual effort. It is more than just the effort of his team. It is the effort of those that raised him, previous teammates, and mentors. Without his individual effort he would not be where he is today, true. But he could also be somewhere else were it not for the efforts of those around him. The best takeaway from this story is that Beast Mode recognizes it is not only the important influence others have on his life, or only his own effort that results in his success. It’s the combination of their efforts and his efforts. He could have a great support network but if he ate fast food every day, didn’t train hard, he wouldn’t be in the NFL.  He could be a freak athlete, but without guidance and focus and support, he could err and his career over in an instant. It is the combination that makes his success a reality. This perspective is awesome. It makes me cheer for Beast Mode, not as a fan of his team per se, but of him as a person (entity?). I think it is easy for people, anyone, to overlook the contributions others have made that paved the way for an individual's success. He acknowledges it, and even points out that he is not afraid to seek assistance, to ask for help. Those with the spotlight, the high profile roles, are often in those positions for a reason. But their success would be limited without the contributions of others. Success is not possible without individual effort, but more often than not success is not a result solely because of individual effort. And now Beast Mode is using his success to give back to those that supported him. He created the Fam 1st Family Foundation to help his community. Lynch may not have played football without the support of his community. But now football is the medium he uses to make a difference in his community. The cycle continues. There is a lot to learn from Beast Mode.

A lot of Seahawks coverage and much more crammed in to one show this week. Adam and Brandan talk about the Buccaneers and how even up 21-0 it never felt as though the Seahawks were ever getting dominated in this week's game. It all led up to an historic comeback for Seattle topped off by another game winner by Steven Hauschka. The Seahawks get the 27-24 overtime win. There's plenty of fawning over Russell Wilson this week, including a stiff arm perhaps only rivaled in recent memory by Marshawn Lynch in his Beast Quake run. Despite an electric punt return by Golden Tate, Adam still isn't keen on the idea of returning punts that are coming down inside the 10-yard line. With the way Matt Ryan and the Falcons are playing this year, there's nothing scary about this Atlanta team. But with the way Seattle has played after Adam's stone cold lock predictions, it's not worth risking it this week with a similar call. Despite the injuries to the Falcons, Harry Douglas and Tony Gonzalez have the ability to inflict damage on the secondary. After the break, Adam and Brandan give their opinion on what's been reported so far in Miami in regard to Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito. They follow up by sending a message to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon in the "Do Better" segment. Finally, a pair of quarterbacks are inducted into the club of those who the guys deem "better at life" than Skip Bayless. Nick Foles and Jason Campbell earn the top honors of the week for their play against the Raiders and Ravens.
