On this week's program, Station manager, Phil Tower welcomes Whitney Valentine, Director of Education + Exhibitions, with the Saugatuck Center for The Arts, and New York Times best-selling author in speaker Brad Montague.Brad Montague is the keynote speaker for the Curiosity In Action Conference on April 26 at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts.We Hope You Fail Better, is currently on exhibit through May 16 at SC4A. It's an exhibit where playful and thoughtful pieces are brought together by New York Times bestselling duo, Brad and Kristi Montague, for their debut exhibition, We Hope You Fail Better., just in time for the release of their new book “Fail-A-Bration.” Brad is the creator of the hit web series Kid President, and Kid Congress, and author of Becoming Better Grownups, and the New York Times best sellers Kid President's Guide to Being Awesome and The Circles All Around Us. As an illustrator, his work is regularly featured in Joanna Gaines's The Magnolia Journal. You're invited to join others at the Curiousity In Action: A Conference In Doing, for a full day of unique and immersive experiences highlighting the intersection of wellness and creativity.Conference participants will use curiosity to discover how creation is a form of self-care and how art-making is inherently therapeutic and spend the day with us making, thinking, connecting, creating, and just… being. We invite you to the first biannual Curiosity in Action: a conference for doing. What's a “Conference for Doing?” Well, it's exactly what it sounds like: taking the conference framework and making it actionable.Part of the aim in building a “conference for doing” is to offer all participants the opportunity to “try on” the ideas that are being shared by our presenters, so the day will follow an adult learning model that incorporates three elements: information, practice, and reflection. Each session will include all three pieces and they will repeat in this pattern:INFORMATION – Encouraging, thoughtful, and creative ideas will be shared by dynamic presenters during the large group sessionsPRACTICE – Immediately following each presentation, attendees will be invited to engage a personal practice that allows them to work with the content offered in the presentation. Prompts will be provided and attendees may engage them in any way that is most helpful to them – maybe you take a quick walk outdoors and think about the prompt, maybe you'd prefer to find a quiet place to be still, or maybe you borrow a friend for a brief chat. REFLECTION – All conference attendees will be divided into Reflection Groups that will gather after the brief “practice” time to continue their learning in community. Each reflection group will be facilitated by trained hosts who guide conversations and activities to help the group dig deeper into the “information” offered by the presenter(s).CURIOSITY IN ACTION- A CONFERENCE IN DOINGOverview, April 26, 2025, 9:00 am - 5:00 p @ Saugatuck Center for the ArtsCost | $125. Brad Montague is creator of the hit web series Kid President and author of Becoming Better Grownups, the New York Times best sellers Kid President's Guide to Being Awesome and The Circles All Around Us. All of Brad's work has been guided by one key phrase: ‘be who you needed when you were younger'. In his conversation with Ryan, Brad reflects on his role as a “helper” and how his mission to make goodness attractive has landed him in the company of Beyoncé, Steven Martin, and President Obama. Brad also gives listeners priceless advice on moving from dreaming to doing, and reminds us that we become more courageous the more we live in our hearts.
Shaun Barrowes, an American Idol season seven finalist, shares his experience on the show with the original judges and host Ryan Seacrest. He recounts the lengthy audition process and his interactions with Simon Cowell. Don't miss this heartfelt, empowering episode—perfect for anyone seeking the courage to "unmute" themselves and create the magic they wish to see in the world. In this episode, Cheryl Knowlton and Shaun Barrowes discuss: Shaun's experience as a finalist on American Idol season seven, including his interactions with the original judges and host Ryan Seacrest The transformative power of embracing "almost is good enough" and learning from failures The importance of applying creativity to problem-solving and bucket list items The unique camaraderie and emotional connection fostered by performing together in stage productions or choirs Key Takeaways: People relate more to the 'almost' stories than the perfect victories, and those who come in second place rarely come back to win the following year. Seizing opportunities and realizing that almost is good enough can lead to incredible experiences and personal growth. Sharing one's unique experiences and perspectives can help others through speaking engagements and retreats. Having a creative outlet that is exercised daily can positively impact all aspects of life. “It's when we let go, when we say almost is good enough, then we have our biggest moments of success. And that's what I've seen again and again.” -Shaun Barrowes About the guest, Shaun Barrowes: Shaun Barrowes, a Season 7 Top 30 Contestant on American Idol and Emmy-Nominated artist for his hit "Army of Kings," boasts a stellar career that includes performances alongside stars like Janelle Monae, Imagine Dragons, and Lindsey Stirling. Notably, he collaborated with Jackie Chan on the theme song for Jackie's USA Green Heroes tour. His original track "Being Awesome," released in 2019, has garnered over 450 million views on YouTube. In 2023, Barrowes extended his talents to become an Amazon bestselling author and award-winning novelist with his debut work, "The Paradise Planets: The Fallen from Paradise." ”In a society that glorifies titles, visibility, reach, and the grind, taking a beat to opt out of all that isn't easy,” today's guest Mel Dizon writes in the origin story to her pop-up Substack. Mel shares how she defines an accidental sabbatical; the energetic urgency and pent up ambition that let her know it was time to leave her job; the permission she needed to give herself; navigating the fears that followed; how publishing her process out loud has helped with courage and accountability; and trusting herself to make important decisions when it's time, while also not rushing that process. More About Mel: Mel Dizon is a writer and editor; a runner, CrossFitter, pickleballer, and efficiency fanatic; a former therapist, consultant, and coach; a dog, pool, and scalding-hot-dirty-chai lover. She started writing words for dollars back in 1993. She's written thousands of articles, ghostwritten many books and essays, facilitated hundreds of video interviews, and written copy for everyone from NYT best-selling authors to companies like Google. Melani dreamed about taking a sabbatical for years, and the universe finally conspired to light the way. Turns out she's a big fan. She currently writes life & dying on Substack for those in the middle of the reinvention mess, seeking to “live a life worth writing about.”

As an illustrator his work is regularly featured in Joanna Gaines's The Magnolia Journal. He lives in Tennessee with his wife and kids. Becoming Better GrownupsWhen his first book tour ended, Brad Montague missed hearing other people's stories so much that he launched what he dubbed a Listening Tour. First visiting elementary schools and later also nursing homes and retirement communities, he hoped to glean new wisdom as to how he might become a better grownup. Now, in this playful and buoyant book, he shares those insights with rest of us --timeless, often surprising lessons that bypass the head we're always stuck in, and go straight to the heart we sometimes forget. Each of the book's three sections begins with the illustrated story of "The Incredible Floating Girl." Brad weaves this story together with lessons of success, fear, regret, gratitude, love, happiness, and dreams to reveal the true reason we are here: to fly, and to help others fly.Beautifully designed and featuring Montague's own whimsical 4-color illustrations that appeal to the kid in all of us, Becoming Better Grownups shares the purpose and meaning we can all discover merely by listening, and reveals that--in a world that seems increasingly childish--the secret to joy is in fact to become more childlike.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since, Kid President's videos have been viewed over 100 million times.Montague, whose stated mission these days is to “create stories that cultivate empathy and imagination in kids and former kids,” joined host Dustin Odham on this episode of Change Starts Here to explore how he and his family are “joyfully rebelling” against the way things are to craft a better world.Since Kid President, Montague has authored “Becoming Better Grownups” and helped bring to life “Kid President's Guide to Being Awesome,” and his conversation with Odham centered on ways to focus on love and your “why” as opposed to the simple “what” of your day-to-day journey through life.Montague told a story about how he and Novak met Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who sidestepped Montague's most-dreaded question, “What do you do for a living?,” with a new one – “What do you love about what you do?”“It's really cool when you hear somebody put words to their love,” Montague said. “I'm a words person, so I need to hear those things.
