AARP's Cultural Expressions: The Arts and Brain Health with Dionne Polite In this episode, Tracy Rigdon and Dionne Polite discuss the significance of brain health as we age, emphasizing the importance of maintaining mental acuity through various lifestyle choices. They explore the six pillars of brain health, including social engagement, mental stimulation, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, and healthy eating. Takeaways Aging is a gift that should be embraced. Social engagement is crucial for mental health. Engaging the brain can be as simple as avoiding GPS. Physical activity is essential for brain health. Restorative sleep is vital for cognitive function. Managing stress is key to maintaining mental clarity. Healthy eating contributes to overall well-being. Art can serve as a therapeutic outlet for grief. Rediscovering hobbies can enhance quality of life. Doodling can help with focus and creativity. Doodling can enhance focus and creativity. Integrate brain health practices gradually into daily life. Socialization can take many forms, even for introverts. Personal stories of aging can inspire others. Living life on your own terms is essential as we age. Community events can provide valuable resources and support. It's important to take responsibility for our health. Aging does not mean giving up on activities you love. Healthy living can be enjoyable and fulfilling. Art and self-expression play a vital role in mental wellness.
Lucy Gray, aka Doodling Lucy, was told that you couldn't make a business from art. This was by a teacher... what a shortsighted statement that was.... Initially, she listened to this limiting and, quite frankly, inaccurate statement, taking action on it and taking a course in psychology at university. But, luckily, the opportunity presented itself for Lucy to embrace her talents again and create Doodling Lucy which is a brand that has become a real hit with so many people. Today, we chat all about the growth of the business, covid, Australia, finding a way to make it work, and so much more besides. I LOVED chatting to Lucy on this podcast. Her perspective on her business, being self employed, embracing adventure and serving her community was so interesting and I'm so grateful that she shared her thoughts on this episode.

Getting hired at Bristol Crown (https://www.bristolcrown.com/), a lab-to -lab milling center for the ALS Dental Group (https://als-dental.com/). He starts by loading mills and scanning models, and soon noticed of how many of the crowns looked the same. Pushed by self-learning, Charlie was soon designing crowns in Exocad (https://exocad.com/) and he even started making teeth libraries for other labs in the ALS group. HT1994 - Photographic Doodling Have you ever just whiled away the time losing yourself in a doodle? I've always thought there is a connection between doodling and creative photography. In both processes, there is an abandonment to the activity to see where it leads. Creating a preconceived image seem like work. Photographic doodling feels more like play. We're a talented bunch on 'The Dave Moore Podcast'. Cathal's painting his other half, Dave is exceptional at bubble writing and Eimear's doodle of Dave is a work of art. If Eimear was three years old and had never seen Dave before. We hear from the stars of Netflix's latest hit show, hand the bad joke baton over to the children of Ireland and ask the question 'what job do you think you'd be really good at'.
Doodling, insanity, dancing and autism provide fascinating examples of how people ended up in the perfect place for their unique talents. We use Sir Ken Robinson's book, The Element, as a guide.

Viral artist Mr. Doodle says the art world is split over his compulsive scribblings. The English creator has teamed up with a fashionable London restaurant to decorate parts of the establishment. And on June 7, he was at London's trendy sketch restaurant decorating the entrance hall. "It's a very meditative process when I'm working on the doodles because I'm never really thinking about the doodles. I don't see this in my head when I draw it. I just kind of move my hand and I'm just thinking about completely different stuff. I'll be thinking about memories from when I was a kid or trying to work out what the next projects are going to be,” he says. Not everything always goes to plan. But the beauty of this type of art is that it doesn't need to be perfect. "Sometimes, I do make a mistake. A line will bump into another line a bit too much, and I will have to just touch it up a little bit with the pen. Everything can kind of be slightly fixed or altered. Sometimes they'll be drips and things, but I don't really see them as mistakes. They're kind of just part of the process, really. But most of the time, the pen is quite forgiving,” says Mr. Doodle. Mr. Doodle has been commissioned by big brand names like Fendi, Puma, and Disney. He also currently has a show at the Holburne Museum in Bath. But does the art world accept him as one of their own? "I think there's a lot of people in the art world that don't like this kind of thing, like doodles and things. And there's strict things in their head that they think art should be, or there should be like some form of concept or message or something heavy or deep about an artwork. And I don't really see it that way. And I think there's a lot of people out there who also feel that way, who are also in the art world. So I think for some people they accept it. Other people don't so much," he says. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

"Microdosing fun" doesn't involve taking any substances. It's a metaphor for incorporating small bursts of enjoyable activities into your day. Here's the idea: Break down large chunks of playtime into tiny, manageable moments. Instead of waiting for a big block of free time for fun, sprinkle these "micro-joys" throughout your day. This can help with: Stress relief: Short breaks can be a powerful way to de-stress and refocus. Happiness: These little moments of enjoyment can add up to a more positive outlook. Creativity: Stepping away from a task can allow for a fresh perspective when you return. Examples of microdosing fun: Taking a walk outside for a few minutes. Doodling or coloring in a coloring book. Listening to a favorite song. Doing a quick puzzle. It's about finding activities you enjoy that can be easily fit into your schedule. So go forth and microdose some fun! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/moodkillers/message

Making Fun A Habit Series 30 days to add fun into your creative practice. I will be going through Mike Brennan's Make Fun A Habit workbook and help you make fun a habit. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mike on my other podcast Find A Podcast About and talking about his podcast Creative Chats. This workbook leads you through steps to rekindle the fun in your life and get you in a space where you are your most creative. This is a 30 day book and I will be tackling each day as if it were a week and providing you insights on how you can use his ideas in your creative practice. Each chapter is broken up with a short story, questions to ponder, action items and tips. Just Doodle It! We all do it. In a meeting or just mindlessly scratching away at some paper or napkin. Doodling is one of the best ways to start a project. There is no commitment and very little effort once you start, but it can give you a pathway to complete your projects. Just about everyone has a writing utensil and something to draw on, so don't neglect the power of the doodle. Question to ponder When in your life do you remember doodling? Where were you? What was it like? What are your immediate objections to doodling? Write them down and then doodle around them. What would make doodling more fun for you? Fancy paper? Specific pens? Reward yourself after a fun doodling session with different supplies. Action item: start doodling in your copy of Make Fun A Habit. Tips: use whatever materials you have there are no rules don't be afraid to experiment doodle whenever you feel like it My Doodle for the week Sign Up for the Create Art Podcast Newsletter Reach Out To The Podcast To reach out to me, email timothy@createartpodcast.com I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. Ashton Rodenhiser is a live illustrator who is passionate about doodling for mindfulness. She has brought over 2500 presentations and conversations to life. Oh, my gosh, well, that is a big question. I am definitely a highly sensitive person. And I think it's helped me just be okay with that. We'll keep it at that. Thoughts On Breathing Oh, my gosh, what are my thoughts on breathing as it relates to mindfulness? Well, that I'm not so great at it. I definitely try to be mindful about breathing. But you have to really be intentional about it. This is something that I'm not so wonderful at. Bullying Story I will tell you something that I learned a few years ago regarding a new definition for forgiveness. And it's really about letting go of the pain, so it doesn't hold you back anymore. Because it's not about forgiving a person; it has nothing to do with the other person. So, I feel like I take that philosophy into many different areas of my life. You know, so you could relate that to bullying. Because a lot of people who are bullied, they hang on to it. And they identify it; they name it; they create this into something that exists in a big way for them in their minds. And then they're not able to let go of it the way you're describing, and they think it's their identity. So it is so important to realize that it doesn't need to be your identity. It is making a very specific conscious decision to let this go. And it is a little bit about taking your own identity and power back and not giving it that energy. Jason Fitger may be the last faculty member the dean wants for the job, but he's the only professor available to chaperone Payne University's annual "Experience: Abroad" (he has long been on the record objecting to the absurd and gratuitous colon between the words) occurring during the three weeks of winter term. Among his charges are a claustrophobe with a juvenile detention record, a student who erroneously believes he is headed for the Caribbean, a pair of unreconciled lovers, a set of undifferentiated twins, and one young woman who has never been away from her cat before. Through a sea of troubles--personal, institutional, and international--the gimlet-eyed, acid-tongued Fitger strives to navigate safe passage for all concerned, revealing much about the essential need for human connection and the sometimes surprising places in which it is found. Julie's first novel, The Body Is Water, was published by Soho Press in 1995 and was an ALA Notable Book of the Year and a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Schumacher's other books include the national best-seller, Dear Committee Members (winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor); The Shakespeare Requirement, Doodling for Academics (a satirical coloring book); and five novels for younger readers. Schumacher lives in St. Paul and is a Regents Professor at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches in the Creative Writing Program and the Department of English. Book Recommendations: Eleanor Catton, Birnam Wood Jonathan Escoffery, If I Survive You Chris Holmes is Chair of Literatures in English and Associate Professor at Ithaca College. He writes criticism on contemporary global literatures. His book, Kazuo Ishiguro as World Literature, is under contract with Bloomsbury Publishing. Despite "designer" dog breeds resulting from crossing traditional AKC recognized breeds with Poodles being technically little more than very expensive mutts, it seems these days everyone in the market to puchase is new puppy is opting for these so called "Doodles." Whether it is a Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, Maltipoo, Yorkiepoo, Shih-poo, Bernadoodle, etc. (the list can go on forever), the Doodling of America is full on with no end in sight. Inspired by a listener email, Dr. Roger offers his perspective on this trend of the current generation of dog owners opting to purchase Doodles and other designer breed crosses. Dr. Roger Welton is a practicing veterinarian and media personality, CEO/attending veterinarian at Premier Veterinary Care , and author of the top selling book, The Man In The White Coat. Doodling – it is just something people do, particularly when listening to a boring speaker. While people often think of it as a distraction, doodling can actually help your memory. Listen as I begin this episode by explaining how that works. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090226210039.htm The Internet is messing with your mind according to Nicholas Carr. He took a close look at the research on this for his book The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains (https://amzn.to/2VasqO6) ( by the way, his work on this made him a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize). Listen as Nicholas makes the case that always being connected and available online takes a toll. Sure the Internet makes life convenient and offers other conveniences, there is a price we all pay that you may not realize. Being a bit weird may actually be one of your greatest strengths. In fact, your weirdness can propel your personal and professional success according to Chris Williamson who gave a TED Talk on Embracing Your Weirdness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Murw1YnFfiw&t=205s). He joins me to explain just how unique you really are and what you can do for yourself and the world by expressing it. Chris is also the host of the podcast Modern Wisdom (https://apple.co/2MNqIgw) Everyone's life is full of problems. While you may not know what problems lie ahead, you can be sure they are there waiting out there somewhere. Listen to hear some interesting advice that will help you better handle those troubles and crises when they do show up. And they will show up.
