They also touch on the relationship between strategy and positioning and how strategy can be applied at different levels, from businesses to individual employees. In this conversation, Jonathan and Alex discuss the importance of creating unique value in business. They explore how companies like Southwest Airlines and Domino's Pizza have successfully differentiated themselves by removing certain aspects of their industry and focusing on their strengths. In S5 E4 I am delighted to welcome Dr Anna Baverstock to the podcast, Anna is a consultant in community child health looking after children with complex neurodisability and their families. She has been an educational supervisor and Associate DME for support and wellbeing. She was invited to be a member of the NHS Staff and Learners' Mental Wellbeing Commission in 2019 (Mental Wellbeing Report | Health Education England (hee.nhs.uk)). Currently she is lead for senior doctor wellbeing and leadership within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Anna is a trained coach, mediator and Schwartz round facilitator. Her philosophy is how do we ensure the first patient of the shift and the last get the same kind, safe care? We must look after ourselves and our teams during our working day. A big part of this is how we connect to self and others especially when under pressure. Can we form brave spaces to enable honest conversation that enable growth and change? When not talking she loves to run, do yoga, read, draw and doodle often inspired by quotes or poems that resonate. In this wonderful conversation we discuss Anna's wellbeing leadership, mediation and coaching work. Key themes discussed here include : Deep listening - to understand and connect, not reply or control.Brave conversations- how can we lean into the challenging conversations including where there is conflict or we need to give or receive difficult feedback. As Anna tells it "Difficult conversations don't get easier, but we get braver" with practice.Connection- in her work to empower and support core work-unit leaders in healthcare and build kind, inclusive cultures where high challenge comes with high support, psychological safety is the means and the goal is connection and creating space for deep listening. Thank you Anna, this conversation is a masterclass in wellness centred leadership.Links/References:Dr Anna Baverstock on X ( see pinned BMJ wellbeing at work article series and her daily doodle!)https://twitter.com/anna_annabavAnna on the Being Better, Together Podcast : https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/being-better-together/id1603984431?i=1000650871466Anna's suggested reading list related to the topics in this conversation:· Brené Brown – Atlas of the heart· Listen to Anna's podcast about the book :https://bedsidereading.buzzsprout.com/1880290/11049191…· Kim Scott – Radical Candor· Stone & Heen – Thanks for the Feedback· Amy Edmondson – The Fearless Organisation · Daniel Coyle – The Culture Code · Marshall Rosenberg – non violent communication· Adam Grant – Think Again· Timothy Clarke – 4 stages of psychological safety· Trzeciak & Mazzarelli – CompassionomicsRegister to hear from Dr Bethan Richards, Australia's first Chief Wellbeing Officer and her team at Sydney LHD at the Pathways to Wellbeing conference 30.04.24https://slhd.health.nsw.gov.au/workplace-wellbeing-conferenc The Mind Full Medic Podcast is proudly sponsored by the MBA NSW-ACT Find out more about their service or donate today at www.mbansw.org.auDisclaimer: The content in this podcast is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Chick-fil-A is receiving a mountain of backlash on social media after people discovered the firm's corporate office had advanced a number of DEI initiatives. The brand known for its conservative and Christian principles appears to be bending the knee to the woke mob. It released a statement titled “Committed to Being Better at Together,” lauding the initiative. Will the beloved chicken company face the same backlash as Bud Light and Target? Company executives should very well hope not. Chad had an insider send him video of the beer shelves at a local store. To no one's surprise, most beers were gone while Anheuser-Busch products, Bud Light in particular, were completely stocked because no one wanted it. AOC is furious that a parody account of her is blowing up on Twitter. The account, AOCPress, went viral and even had Elon Musk commenting on the clearly satiric tweets. Unfortunately, AOC has absolutely no sense of humor and freaked out. Speaking of humorless scolds, Wanda Sykes used her new Netflix special to call out Dave Chappelle, saying his jokes were “hurtful and damaging to the trans community.” It's amazing to see a comedian be unable to recognize something as a joke. Toronto Blue Jays player Anthony Bass made a groveling apology to the LGBT crowd after sharing content that advocated for Christians to boycott Target, Bud Light, and other entities pushing pro-LGBT ideology. Unfortunately, we're likely to see more of these struggle-session apologies as the month continues. The Trump and DeSantis competition continues to get heated. Trump went after Kayleigh McEnany for reporting poll numbers he didn't like on Fox News. Is he helping himself by attacking his former press secretary, or will this hurt his image? Certainly, things will only intensify as the campaign process continues. When I say, “confidence”, what comes to mind for you? Really? Do you feel confident, and how do you define confidence? Today I'm going to help you answer these questions for yourself, and get to know what true confidence really is by redefining your confidence. Because confidence is not only overrated, it's misunderstood. This topic was inspired by a Facebook Live I did earlier today on my Dr. Shannon Page, while I was wearing my “infamous” pants. I did an episode about the blue version of these pants a while ago. One of the big things that gets in the way of confidence is COMPARISON. The truth is, comparison never works! We can never win in the game of comparison. Being BETTER than someone else isn't confidence. So what does “Overrated Confidence” mean? How can we learn from it? One of the BIG KEYS to confidence is LOVING yourself well…what you are, who you are, what you're all about. But let's go even deeper… So many people are seeking confidence. Why? Seriously, I believe it's overrated. Why? Because it's misunderstood. Being confident for the sake of confidence isn't really confidence. We may think it is, but it's not. It's time to REDEFINE CONFIDENCE. The opposite of confidence is insecurity. What's insecurity? The bigger concern is what's causing the insecurity. Identify what's causing your insecurity. This will help you redefine what true confidence means to you. Insecurity is selfish. For you to be insecure you have to be thinking about what everyone else is thinking about you. Insecurity is very self-centered. When we get our minds centered too much on ourselves, we can get insecure very quickly. This is also where fear comes from. Fear comes from being focused too much on ourselves. If the truth about YOU is that you're NOT selfish, then you ARE confident. Deep down. This IS the truth about you. Confidence redefined is TRUTH. Insecurity is popular…and it's very common. Insecure people strive to be popular. Pretending like you're confident to prove to someone else that you're confident (or popular) is again, OVERRATED. It's a huge, deceptive game! True confidence isn't even about confidence. It's about TRUTH. The truth about you. You being your most authentic self and loving yourself well. Confidence is standing in that truth and love. Being the TRUE, CONFIDENT YOU. Not TRYING to be, but BEING. Confidence is knowledge of, belief in, living in the truth. This is TRUE CONFIDENCE. If you'd like to truly express your confident self... You must let go of insecurity. You must let go of trying to strive to be popular. You must let go of the selfishness. THAT IS CONFIDENT. THAT IS CONFIDENCE. Standing in the truth about who you are, what and why you are. Knowledge of the truth will set you free. Confidence is freedom. Because confidence is truth. Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. JOURNAL (Daily Action To Engage yourself.) TODAY'S SACRED S.O.L. Meet Amy Gallo:Amy Gallo is the author of the “HBR Guide to Dealing with Conflict,” and the forthcoming “Getting Along: How to Work with Anyone (Even Difficult People).” She is a co-host of the Women at Work podcast and is a contributing editor at Harvard Business Review. She is a public speaker and founder of Amy E Gallo Consulting, Inc as well as a Coach and Consulting Partner at Paravis Partners, LLC. Amy received a Bachelor's in Sociology from Yale University and an MPA in Public Policy from Brown University.Key Insights:Amy Gallo realized there were many exceptions to the generalized rules about dealing with conflict. She set out to write a book that provides more specific advice for dealing with different types of difficult people.Being Better at Conflict. When conflict arises, we tend to go on the defensive and lose sight of the other person. Instead, try to think about the other person in an empathetic way. Additionally, do preparation for the conversation. Ask yourself: what are the facts of the situation, what assumptions am I making, and what don't I know? And, what if I'm wrong, what would I do differently? (11:28)Working with Passive-Aggressive Types. Some co-workers may defy orders and not be straightforward or honest. Amy recommends creating situations where that coworker feels comfortable sharing their disagreements, and feels seen and heard. Additionally, create group norms that create positive peer pressure so that person delivers on their agreements. If those tips don't work, call out the behavior with examples. (29:05)Working With Know-It-Alls. To navigate disagreements with a know-it-all, focus the conversation on facts and data. Additionally, overconfident people tend to respect confidence in others, so present your data with conviction. Remember that their behavior likely is a reflection of their own insecurities, and not a judgement of you. Intuition can be a tricky subject, because while we understand the concept of intuition intellectually, figuring out how to listen to & follow that “inner voice” can feel incredibly vague and mysterious in real life. But bridging this paradox of intuition is actually much simpler than we think... Marie & Julia begin this episode by clarifying what intuition really is and provide neuropsychological research to explain why it's valuable to our health on all levels (mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual). Yet despite it's life-changing potential, so many of us go through life ignoring these “gut instincts” which can unfortunately result in serious mental and physical health conditions including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, burnout, and much more (hello paradox!). To bridge this gap, they discuss practical steps we can take to begin recovering & cultivating our innate intuitive capacity (because we are all born with this ability), and share their own personal stories of how intuition has played an important role in their platonic & romantic relationships as well as their movement practices. Julia reveals her recent episode of overstimulation & burnout as a result of ignoring her body's cues, and how she struggled to maintain her rhythm with her intuitive movement practice . Together they wrap up the episode reflecting on the nuances of Julia's relationship with her body & her movement practice, and highlight how her intuition was working to guide her back into alignment (hint — “sticking with it” is not always the answer). Marie provides new insight on how to deepen our connection with our intuition, and a new practice to play with in the meantime. Episode 5 Marie and Julia are joined in a conversation about the power of our inner voice. They discuss what intuition really is and provide neuropsychological research to help explain why developing the ability to listen to it can be so life-changing. Yet, most of us go through life ignoring our “gut instincts”, which unfortunately can result in serious physical and mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and many more. Therefore, the co-hosts move on to discussing some ways through which we can all practice and foster intuition and give tangible, real-life advice. They also share their personal stories as examples of the importance of intuition in platonic and romantic relationships as well as movement practices. Before the end of the discussion, Julia shares how she was recently struggling in following her intuitive movement practice as an indirect effect of ignoring her instincts and bodily cues. In our third installment of Meant To Move, Marie and Julia focus on the connection between embodiment and pleasure, and explore the obvious and not-so-obvious ways these aspects of our humanity are intimately linked. To start, this conversation kicks off by digging into the central channel of our embodiment: our movement & exercise practices, why so many of us find these practices to be unpleasant and uncomfortable (physically, mentally, & emotionally), and how prioritizing the sensations of our body over what our bodies “look” like (not just aesthetically, but when we move as well) helps us begin to cultivate more pleasure. In fact, when discussing how to cultivate pleasure in movement, Marie & Julia discuss how kids are some of their greatest role models. They are so beautifully proficient at prioritizing their enjoyment of every minute (or more honestly, every second) of their lives. And even in our adulthood, we can earn great rewards by nurturing our own inner child whenever we can. And as you probably expected when first reading the title of this episode, they steer this topic of pleasure into the realm of sensuality and sexuality (because let's be real — these are key players in the field here). Both of these factors are key elements to our wellbeing, yet historically have been left out of these discussions (thankfully the out-dated sense of taboo is loosening its grip). They share their own personal stories of learning to enjoy their own bodies, masturbation, orgasm, and healing the shame and trauma that so many of us feel in this space. To bring us to the finish of this episode, Julia shares some recent insights and experiences in her movement journey, and Marie offers new ways to tune into a deeper sense of pleasure & play in our bodies and bring our embodiment practice to a new level. Episode 3 In the third episode of Meant To Move, Marie and Julia reconnect to discuss the relationship between embodiment and pleasure. They talk about why so many of us find movement and exercise unpleasant as well as how we can learn to practice pleasure and joy in other areas of our lives. They realize that we can learn so much from kids who prioritize enjoying every second of every minute and share tips on how we can tend to our inner child. Later, Julia and Marie move on to discussing pleasure in terms of sensuality and sexuality - a factor that's crucial for our overall health but is at the same time considered a taboo topic. They share their own stories of learning to enjoy their own bodies, masturbation, orgasm, and healing the shame and trauma that so many of us feel around this space. At the end of the episode, Julia shares recent insights and experiences in her movement journey, and Marie suggests new ways to tune into our bodies and take this embodiment practice to a new level.Watch the practice guide on YouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCiKhinIZisvL-w12U0cw0SwVisit our website https://juliaszpor.wixsite.com/meanttomoveMARIE JANICEKMarie's Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mariejanicek/Marie's website https://www.mariejanicek.com/Evolna www.evolna.comThis Thing Called Movement Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/this-thing-called-movement/id1442617080https://open.spotify.com/show/6o9WGd2NoEcYA4EzVfjI7c?si=2662711dcd1c4a4fJULIA SZPORBeing Better Instagram https://www.instagram.com/beingbetter.pod/Being Better website https://www.beingbetter.infoBeing Better TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@beingbetter_Being Better podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/pl/podcast/being-better/id1546447513

Welcome to the second episode of Meant To Move — a special podcast collaboration dedicated to the power of movement and embodiment — co-created by Marie Janicek & Julia Szpor as part of the “Being Better” and “This Thing Called Movement” podcasts. Today Marie and Julia dig deep into the emotionally charged topic of: how to negotiate anxiety & insecurity surrounding our bodies & movement and exchange them for confidence and empowerment instead. Together they flesh out some of the biggest pieces of this puzzle, like why movement often feels awkward (yes bodies are magical but they can also be weird), why so many of us are afraid of going to the gym (ugh please don't look at me), and why moving in front of other people is so intimating (ahhh again please don't look at me!). And while deconstructing these very real challenges in relationship to our bodies and movement, they share their own personal stories in navigating these waters of anxiety and insecurity, how they made the transition to feeling more happy & confident, and add detailed scientific explanations for how movement actually helps us regulate anxieties and insecurities. To wrap up, Julia shares her recent experiences (and exciting revelations!) with Marie's recommended intuitive movement practices — how it felt, what was hard, what were the benefits, and what she would've done differently. Marie unravels the science behind Julia's first two weeks of practice and gives and Julia (and all you listeners) a new set of recommendations to follow in trying out this episode's practice. Episode Notes Many of the books in recent years about stoicism are geared toward Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, and it seems like it's just a philosophy to work hard and not be overtaken by emotions. The reality is that stoicism is far more than that. Today, we chat with philosopher Kai Whiting about his new book Being Better. We discuss what we can learn from stoicism to make a world worth living in. Learn how to keep your creative juices flowing and balance your energy. Resources Women's Anatomy of Arousal: Secret Maps to Buried Pleasure by Sheri Winston Finding God Through Sex: Awakening the One of Spirit Through the Two of Flesh by David Deida To Be Magnetic, The #1 Destination for Neural Manifestation Being Better website Connect with Brittney: LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Episode Highlights [04:25] What Brittney Learned and Unlearned She just finished Women's Anatomy of Arousal by Sheri Winston. Brittany resonated with Sheri's biography because her sexuality, intimate relationships, and professional work contributed to where she's currently at. She had to unlearn a lot of shame and guilt from her adulthood until now. She didn't intend to go into the realm of pelvic health until she learned how women were treated in medicine. [04:25] The Importance of the Biopsychosocial Model The psychosocial part is the reality that we live in. Learning more about your spirituality helps you become aware of the biopsychosocial parts and emotional layers in people. The pelvis is a powerful and special area in one's body. [08:53] The Power of the Pelvis The pelvic bowl has a set of three bones that act as a holder for muscles, ligaments, and nerve endings that supply support and structure; it's also a house of pleasure. If you're experiencing financial, health, or emotional instability, you may have issues with your root chakra. Tapping into the sacral chakra can make you feel connected with what you're trying to birth and the magic of creation. If you experience shame or someone crosses your boundaries, it might block the sacral chakra. Brittney: “In the womb space, there's a beautiful rhythm that we experience as menstruators. The bleed, the build, the bleed, the build — it's basically just a cleansing and gathering energy that goes back and forth.” [15:59] Holistic Pelvic Care Experience Brittney had a healing experience with a practitioner in San Diego. In that experience, she discovered that her left side, which is the feminine side, was very pronounced. However, her masculinity feels absent. The assessment made her realize her lack of “masculinity” in her business. These things may link back to other energetics in your life — and for Brittney, it was her familial relationships and religious upbringing. [20:52] Brittney's Journey in Growth and Healing While she's healed, the wound needs massaging from time to time. In her relationships, she went through tough breakups and gained breakthroughs. Brittney: “...it was more like breaking open your heart to new things, whether it was experiences for yourself or another partner. But those heartbreaks really cracked me open wide to the world of even starting my own business.” Trying out new things helped her with her growth and confidence. She's also been doing shadow work and reading up on trauma during the pandemic. She knew she could instill abundant knowledge and empowerment when it comes to menstrual health and tap into the power of the menstrual cycle. [26:52] On Growth and Celebration She recently experienced being guided in a pussy-painting party. Not many women have gazed down at that area of their bodies to explore and discover its beauty. Healing and celebration can occur simultaneously. [31:23] Keeping Creativity Flowing Brittney intentionally works six hours with conscious breaks in between. On her menstrual cycle, she found that her ideas are overflowing. If she finds something that feels exciting and aligned, she posts it. [34:12] Harnessing the Menstrual Cycle The menstrual cycle has four phases that can coincide with the lunar phase. Those who don't menstruate can refer to the lunar cycle. First, the follicular phase is where you can plan and brainstorm. The ovulatory phase is when you execute your plans and explore ideas further. You can wrap things up and get things done best while in the luteal phase. Finally, the period phase may require more alone time to rest and reflect. Being more intentional with your time could be helpful as well. [39:42] Balancing Your Energy While in her late luteal phase, she knew her period was starting on the weekend. At the same time, she also had two weddings she wanted to attend. She advised her boyfriend that she might need extra downtime in between. In the end, she had fun during the weekend without interrupting her period cycle. [39:42] Tracking Your Cycle You must be your biggest cheerleader. Syncing with your cycle is crucial so you'll know how to take care of your body and listen to what it needs at the moment. Brittney: “It's just more information for me to know better how to treat my body.” [47:06] Final Words She offers mentorships and workshops to embrace your sexuality and explore feminine and masculine energies. If someone met her for the first time, she wishes they'd ask, “What's lighting you up?” The new altar she built for herself, along with her crystals, trinkets, and cards intending to worship her femininity, lights her up now. I sit down with my old high school teacher and children's book author, David Lubinger, to talk about his book series and how he went from teacher to author. Sometimes, when something doesn't go the way we want it creates a whole new path for us to take. Find out how, this week on Being Better!
