What happens when someone who's spent decades inside the lighting industry's machinery gets straight to it?In this episode of LytePOD, host Sam Koerbel sits down with Geoff Marlow, a veteran consultant and industry strategist who has witnessed firsthand the seismic shifts reshaping architectural lighting—from the rise of LED technology to the relentless wave of consolidation, private equity takeovers, and the erosion of relationships that once held this industry together.Geoff walks through what he calls TTO—the convergence of talent scarcity, technical complexity, and the shift from products to outcomes—and explains why the industry's failure to address these forces is creating chaos across every layer of the supply chain. He reveals why manufacturers, reps, distributors, and designers are all pointing fingers at each other's margins while missing the bigger picture: the process itself is broken. Projects are treated as linear when they're actually iterative. Relationships are treated as poetry when they need to be built on definitive, measurable trust. And consolidation—whether it's reps buying reps, manufacturers buying manufacturers, or private equity rolling up portfolios—keeps failing because purpose is missing. But this isn't just a diagnosis. It's a call to action. Geoff argues that the industry needs to move from inductive chaos to deductive clarity—starting with outcomes, not guesswork. Those margin dollars aren't owed, they're earned. That partnership isn't owed, it's earned. That enthusiasm isn't owed, it's earned. And that if the industry can't create a shared language, a shared purpose, and a shared commitment to solving problems together, it will continue to eat itself from the inside out.
There's a good chance you've seen the headline making its rounds: Ford's CEO is on record claiming they have over 5,000 open mechanic jobs paying $120,000 a year that they just can't fill. When I heard it, I had a reaction because the statement is deeply disconnected from reality. It's a gross oversimplification based on surface-level logic, and frankly, it is completely false. (A few minutes of research will prove that, if you don't believe me.) This week on Future Focused, I'm not just picking apart Ford. I'm using this as a case study for a very dangerous trend: blaming job seekers for problems that originate inside the company. The real danger here is that leaders are confusing the total cost of a role with the actual take-home salary. That one detail lets them pass the buck and avoid facing the actual problems, like: Underinvestment in skill development. Outdated job designs and seeking the mythical "unicorn" candidate. Lack of clear growth pathways for current employees. Systemic issues that stay hidden because no one is asking the hard questions. If you're a leader struggling to hire, you don't have a talent crisis; you have an alignment crisis and a diagnostic crisis. I talk through a case study inside a large organization where I was forced to turn high turnover and high vacancy around by looking in the mirror. I'll walk some key shifts like: Dump the Perfect Candidate Myth right now, because that person doesn't exist and hiring them at the ceiling only creates a flight risk. Hire for Core Capabilities like adaptability, curiosity, and problem-solving, instead of a checklist of specific job titles or projects. Diagnose Without Assigning Blame by having honest conversations with the people actually doing the job to find out the real blockers. By the end, I hope you'll be convinced that change comes from the person looking back at you in the mirror, not the person you're trying to hire. ⸻If this conversation helps you think more clearly about the future we're building, make sure to like, share, and subscribe. You can also support the show by buying me a coffee. And if your organization is wrestling with how to lead responsibly in the AI era, balancing performance, technology, and people, that's the work I do every day through my consulting and coaching. Analysts are raising alarms about the potential for an AI economy bubble, reminiscent of the dot-com crash, as AI-related spending now constitutes about 2% of the U.S. GDP. This surge in investment, particularly following the launch of ChatGPT, has led to significant capital expenditures by major tech firms, consuming a large portion of America's investment pool. As skepticism grows regarding the sustainability of these expenditures, organizations are increasingly shifting their AI workloads from public cloud environments to on-premises systems to ensure better governance, cost predictability, and data privacy. The recent launch of GPT-5 has sparked mixed reactions, yet it is gaining traction in the enterprise market. Early adopters have reported that GPT-5 outperforms competitors in specific tasks, offering faster setups and better results at a lower cost. OpenAI is actively pursuing enterprise clients, expanding its sales team, and exploring financial strategies to bolster its position in the market. Meanwhile, Apple is introducing new tools for businesses to manage employee access to AI services, emphasizing the importance of data protection and governance as AI becomes more integrated into the workplace.Workplace research highlights the benefits of a four-day workweek, revealing that employees experience improved well-being and productivity without a reduction in pay. Additionally, new studies challenge the traditional view on pay transparency, suggesting that greater openness can enhance employee satisfaction. However, immigration policies are creating significant challenges in IT talent management, with a notable decline in H-1B visa registrations, which could hinder the tech industry's growth and innovation. The return-to-office mandates are also impacting the workforce, particularly among working mothers, leading to a decrease in their participation in the labor market. As companies grapple with these changes, there is a growing demand for formal periods of digital silence to enhance productivity and reduce workplace distractions. The podcast emphasizes the need for businesses to focus on outcomes rather than hype, advocating for effective governance, automation, and preparation to adapt to the evolving work environment. Accounting must abandon toxic traditions, prioritize people over profits, and rebuild its mentoring culture—or risk losing the next generation entirely. The DisruptorsWith Liz FarrYuri Kapilovich didn't set out to become #TheFunCPA. It started as a casual hashtag when he shared photos from buses and bikes, but it stuck—especially after a networking event where attendees misread his booth sign and started calling him “The Funk PA.” The nickname became a brand, but it also reflects his deeper mission: bringing humanity and humor back to a profession that's burning out its best talent. Hey there, friends! In today's episode, we're diving into some big shifts happening in the world of philanthropy and nonprofits—and why it's more crucial than ever for us to evolve with the times. We're in a new era. From policy changes on platforms like Facebook that affect nonprofit fundraising to a noticeable decline in DEI and education funding, it's clear that yesterday's strategies won't carry us forward. We're seeing funding sources dry up, priorities shift, and high performers leave the sector. If we don't adapt, we risk getting left behind. And I don't want that for any of you or the causes you champion.Key Points Covered:- Changing Fundraising Landscape: Social media platforms and government funding policies are shifting. For example, Facebook is no longer supporting recurring gifts or covering fees, and many big-name philanthropies are cutting their education budgets. To survive and thrive, we need diversified revenue streams and strategies that don't rely on a single source. - Talent Crisis in Nonprofits: The nonprofit space is struggling to attract, retain, and train talent, especially in development roles. Too often, we see fundraising stars promoted into management roles without the skills or support to truly lead. We need to invest in developing our people and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed.- Leadership and Growth: Being a great manager isn't about having all the answers; it's about coaching and supporting your team's growth. It's time to shift from a mindset of doing it all ourselves to empowering others to lead and create change alongside us.- Avoiding Burnout: We are stretched thin, often doing multiple roles. It's not sustainable. We need to communicate our needs, advocate for better support, and focus on activities that drive meaningful progress. As leaders, we have to model a healthier, more sustainable approach to work.I also talked about the importance of self-reflection, especially as nonprofit leaders. Every quarter, I take a step back to assess how I'm doing in all aspects of my life—from my relationships to my work to my personal growth. We need to prioritize not only the tasks but our well-being and long-term vision. This kind of introspection and planning is essential to keep our organizations strong and sustainable. If we want to see change in our organizations, it starts with us. We need to embrace new ways of thinking, build new habits, and invest in ourselves as leaders. It's about growing our skill sets, enhancing our capacity to lead, and creating a culture where our teams feel supported, empowered, and inspired. Together, we can grow our impact and make a difference, but it requires action, courage, and a commitment to growth. So, let's continue to challenge ourselves and each other to be the best leaders we can be.Do you need to make bolder asks, but you have to figure out what the heck you're going to say? This week, Rob Levin, says there's a talent crisis in America, but you wouldn't know it reading most business publications. That's because the crisis is affecting smaller businesses much more than bigger businesses. Levin, co-founder and chairman of WorkBetterNow, which provides remote workforce and virtual assistant services to small businesses, says he keeps hearing the same thing from owners who come to him looking for help. They just can't find good people. Levin offers several pieces of advice that start with creating a culture that people want to be part of and then building your brand as an employer. We also talk about how he's gotten his whole team hooked on using AI, in part through what he calls show-and-tell days.
Later this month, we will host our first Australian Aviation Summit in partnership with Leidos Australia. They examine its causes, effects and what more needs to be done to solve this ongoing challenge. Plus, they also discuss their pioneering collaboration that will see Leidos provide $120,000 worth of scholarship funding to final-year students at RMIT.

We're back with another Riot Act Reviews, the show where we cast our critical eye over a brand new release from a sizable or interesting artist. Today we're looking at the 6th studio album from Canadian stadium punk lads Billy Talent, Crisis of Faith.
