Thanks for listening! This is a quick episode to get your eyes fixed on Jesus this year. Please remember that ALL we have been able to achieve, do, and accomplish He has done it for you!! "LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us." Isaiah 26:12 NIV I'm excited to do a Proverb a day with anyone who wants to do it with me. Beth Harris first did this exercise with me in 2021. God bless you all and have a great first week of 2024!
Elle Cline and Beth Harris came into the studio to chat about DECA
It sounds like the setup to a joke: "A punk rock guitarist and a preacher's daughter walk into a theater..." But when Billy Alletzhauser and Beth Harris starting singing songs together in 2004, the result was pure magic. Their band, The Hiders, is the Kevin Bacon of music, with connections to Ass Ponys, The Afghan Whigs, Throneberry, Wussy, Heartless Bastards, Band of Horses, Plow On Boy, Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, Pearlene and more. And their sound is an amazing amalgamation of folk, country, rock, psychedelia, bluegrass, and indie rock. We talked to B & B about their start, the band's evolution, Billy's Ass Ponys tenure, Beth's harmony vocal work with Erika Wennerstrom and Heartless Bastards, the Hiders most recent album (2021's Forever at the End) and their plans for the year ahead.
According to a group that opposes horse racing as inhumane, 901 thoroughbreds died in 2022 -- more than two a day. Seven horses died over 10 days leading up to the Kentucky Derby in May this year. And Saturday, a horse was injured during a preliminary race at the Preakness Stakes and euthanized. Beth Harris, who covers the horse racing industry for the Associated Press, joins John Yang to discuss. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders
This podcast was SO encouraging to put together because Beth Harris loved the LORD and she loved people so well! But it's also a reminder that our time here on Earth with Beth is done until we see her in heaven again. We miss our Beth! Big thanks to the ladies who added their heartfelt words on Beth and her beautiful God-fearing character. God bless you and your families. Beth was a true joy and a wonderful sister in Christ. See you again in heaven, Beth. ♥️ Hope you all have a great Easter. If Beth were here, I know she would want you all to know you are welcome to join the Olive Baptist family for church if you do not have a church home. Connect with Olive: https://olivebaptist.org/ Below this line is the original podcast description of the 8/15/21 first conversation with Beth on the podcast: "Love this chat with Beth Harris! Beth is the Executive Assistant to Dr. Ted Traylor who is the lead pastor at Olive Baptist Church. In this chat, we talk about how it is so easy to start off a conversation saying "I, me or we" but as Beth tells us, she feels called to work to try to say what God is doing first and give Him the glory first. Beth's favorite Bible verse helping her out in this season is Philippians 1:6 (NIV) which reads: "being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." The Bible verse we talk about after she reads the verse that is helping her out in this season is Ephesians 2:10 (ESV) which reads: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Bienvenidos! Today Barbara talks to Beth Harris about caring for her mother, Gail. Gail was first diagnosed two years ago with a Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), then with Alzheimer's two months ago. Beth says it was hard to accept her mother's diagnosis at first, because she remained lucid and sharp. They discuss the “common themes” of Alzheimer's -- getting lost, forgetting things, having trouble processing information -- yet how each case is unique, making it impossible for caregivers to know what to expect. They also talk about some creative ways that Beth convinces her mother to do things, and why, in certain situations, it's ok to lie.
Before the chat with Beth Harris this week, we get an update from Krista Germeil with The Vilaj Ansanm in Jeremie, Haiti after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Saturday killing at least 1,419 people (CNN). Let's pray for Haiti. And if you want to give to their ongoing efforts in Haiti, here are two places where Krista recommends doing that, if you decide you want to give. This podcast is not telling you to give or encourage you to give. We are just giving you two places where you can give if you feel led to do so. In this episode, “Portraits of Rulers,” I take a look at the history of portraits of rulers in the canon of Western art and examine how portraits engage with structures of power. Beginning with French and English royalty in the 17th and 18th century, I end with a visual analysis of Kehinde Wiley's portrait of former American President Barack Obama. Focusing on these rulers allows us to see how European portrait conventions use a number of visual cues, from clothing, pose, setting, and the objects included within the painting, to convey wealth, power and the right to rule. Examining a portrait of late 17th-century Queen Marie Antoinette allows us to see gender differences in royal portraiture. Looking closely at Obama's portrait reveals the ways in which Wiley both adopted and refined European portrait conventions in a way that makes his portrait stand out among portraits of other American presidents. USModernist Radio goes to Palm Springs each February for the incredibly popular Modernism Week. It’s a fascinating array of sunshine, architecture, lectures, parties, tours, exhibits, and you can even order martinis for breakfast. Yes, you can do that anywhere but you'll feel glamorous in Palm Springs. USModernist Radio's George Smart was there with keynote speakers and other special guests who make Modernism Week a blast. The Kaufmann House is one of the most famous residences in Palm Springs. Designed by Richard Neutra, it passed through a succession of owners and unfortunate renovations until Brent and Beth Harris brought it back to its original glory. George talks about the house and it's journey from the past into the future with Brent Harris in a rare visit, poolside at the Kaufmann House. Hugh Kaptur is the last living major mid-century modern architect in Palm Springs. He's the Obiwan of Modernism, the last of the Jedi. Alongside other celebrated Palm Springs architects, such as E. Stewart Williams, Donald Wexler, Bill Cody, John Porter Clark, and Albert Frey, Kaptur created the Modernist vibe that Palm Springs is famous for, from hotels to fire stations to apartment complexes to houses. From the 1950's through today, he's been turning out head-turning award-winning architecture. Kaptur has a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. He was featured in the documentary Quiet Elegance.
