On this episode, we discuss epistolary books, one of the prompts for Books & Bites Bingo. Epistolary novels are told primarily through letters, but they can also include diaries, emails, instant messages, transcripts, and even post-it notes. Prefer to read nonfiction? Collections of letters count for this prompt, too. Carrie shares some of her favorites. Our PicksTo the Bright Edge of the World by Eowyn Ivey is an epistolary novel that combines some of Carrie's favorite things: historical fiction, adventure, nature, romance, and a touch of magic. In 1885, U.S. Army Colonel Allen Forrester leads an expedition up the fictional Wolverine River in the Alaska Territory, leaving his pregnant wife Sophie behind in the Vancouver barracks. The book is written primarily in the form of Sophie's and Allen's diaries and letters.Pairing: Allen and his expedition team are so malnourished, they get scurvy, a severe form of vitamin C deficiency. If only they'd had citrus and herb tonic to sustain them! This concentrated tea can be served warm or chilled over sparkling water or tonic.Jacqueline chose the YA science fiction novel Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. It's the account of a Stellarcorp War in the year 2575 between two competing companies and the military. It has a little something for everyone, including horror and the romance between two high school students, Kady and Ezra. The story is told from the point of view of the survivors, military personnel, and the ship's computer through hacked documents.Pairing: Vegan Galaxy Cake from Vegan Doll House. Michael read Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie. It's a haunted house story that involves ghost hunters, and the story is told in transcripts of raw video footage, webpages, journal entries, emails, and text messages. This book compiles these documents in an attempt to piece together what happened to the cast and crew of the paranormal investigation show, Fade to Black.Pairing: Start off a night of paranormal investigation right with a hot, hearty bowl of bacon mac and cheese.

He is a member of the HWA, SFWA, International Thriller Writers, and IFWA. Warning novels are important. So like Sinclair Lewis It Can’t Happen here felt like a well-timed warning 90 years after it was published. With Our War, Craig DiLouie was put in an uncomfortable place as the author of a warning novel that appeared to be coming true on January 6th, 2021. When right-wing seditionists tried to start the very conflict, he warned about it. In this interview talk about his earlier novels but our main focus is Our War a novel set in a second modern American civil war in Indianapolis my home state. In this episode we have returning guest, writer Craig DiLouie to talk about his new book, a horror novel - The Children of Red Peak.             The survivors of a doomsday cult's horrific last days reunite to confront their past and the entity that appeared on the final night. Craig DiLouie's The Children of Red Peak (Redhook, November 17, 2020) examines belief, madness, and trauma in a psychological and supernatural horror novel. Publisher's Weekly calls it a “chilling story of cult abuse… Horror readers will be hooked.”   David Young, Deacon Price, and Beth Harris live with a dark secret. As children, they survived a religious group's horrific last days at the isolated mountain Red Peak. Years later as adults, the trauma of what they experienced never feels far behind. When a fellow survivor commits suicide, they finally reunite and share their stories. Long-repressed memories surface, defying understanding and belief. Why did their families go down such a dark road? What really happened on that final night? The answers lie buried at Red Peak. But truth has a price, and escaping a second time may demand the ultimate sacrifice. We talk about the difference between a religion and a cult, how to capture the spiritual essence of music in prose, and we also get deep into what is so scary about religion and faith tipping over into something darker. On top of that, Craig confronts us all with one of the big moral questions – how many arms would YOU feed to a shredder if you had to?Along the way we mention some other books, including: It (1986), by Stephen KingKin (2011), by Kealan Patrick BurkeLast Days (2012), by Adam NevilleSuffer the Children (2014), by Craig DiLouieHater (2006), by David MoodyThe Power (2016), by Naomi AldermanCome talk books with us on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com.Thanks to Terry Smith Audio for sound editing.

In science fiction, “near future” usually refers to settings that are a few years to a few decades off. But Craig DiLouie’s Our War (Orbit, 2019)—about a second U.S. civil war that starts after the president is impeached and convicted but refuses to step down—feels as if it might be only weeks away. Born in the U.S., DiLouie now lives in Calgary, Alberta. He is the author 18 books of science fiction, fantasy, horror and thrillers. Our War came out in August, a month before the U.S. House of Representatives launched its impeachment inquiry. When he started writing in 2017, “I was looking at the growing polarization in America and political tribalization, which is considered one of the five precursors to civil war,” DiLouie says. “I hope it stays in fiction.” The story is told through the eyes of a young brother and sister who are used as soldiers by opposite sides. He set the book in Indianapolis because “it's a quintessential American city… a very blue city in a sea of red, rural areas.” He says he strove to be even-handed, focusing less on politics and more on the human impact of civil war. “At any given time, there's hundreds of thousands of [children] fighting around the world,” says DiLouie, who read reports from the U.N. as part of his research into the psychology of child solders. A child soldier’s “loyalty is not based on an ideology… They end up staying and fighting because the militia becomes their family.” While the conflict in the book eventually ends, DiLouie makes clear that the children’s scars—physical and psychic—will last a lifetime. Filion).  Need-a-Nickname Scott is on vacation this week, so Brother D also tackles the regular round-up of zombie news in the Zombie Beat, but before Scott took off, he sent in a review of the novel The Infection by Craig DiLouie.  Miss Bren helps D tackle nearly a month's worth of emails and voicemails in the Feedback Discussion (the Discussion was kicked off with a call-in report from the recent Monster Mania Con, courtesy of Zombart!).Email us at MailOrderZombie@gmail.com or call us at 206-202-2505!Palavr.com Forums - http://palavr.com/forum.php/Rondo Hatton Awards - http://rondoaward.com/rondo/rondos.htmlSee the Dead - http://vimeo.com/3274678See the Dead (high definition) - http://www.vimeo.com/1737661Zombie Honeymoon - http://www.zombiehoneymoon.com/Resident Evil 5 release date? - http://www.moviesonline.ca/2011/03/resident-evil-5-release-date/Resident Evil 5 has a release date - http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=18305Charlie Sheen in The Walking Dead? - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/walking-dead-creator-begs-charlie-164745The Walking Dead panel at C2E2 - http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=31412Stephen King writing The Walking Dead? - http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/03/21/stephen-king-walking-dead-amc/Meredith Hagner cast in Awakening - http://www.deadline.com/2011/03/emily-vancamp-gets-the-lead-in-abcs-revenge-other-pilot-castings/Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides zombie concept art - http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=75120Russell off Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Grahame-Smith on? - http://www.tgdaily.com/entertainment/54748-pride-and-prejudice-and-zombies-loses-director-may-hire-authorDeadliest Warrior: Vampires vs. Zombies - http://www.spike.com/video-clips/n5heay/deadliest-warrior-the-deadliest-warrior-pits-vampires-vs-zombiesxbox7752 Deadliest Warrior response - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUKOpPNEkc4lions4life2 Deadliest Warrior repsonse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AMFCpRgF5wOutpost: Black Sun begins production - http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/43226/outpost-black-sun-begins-productionHumans Versus Zombies - http://www.hvzthemovie.com/Humans Versus Zombies on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/HVZMOVIEFlesh of my Flesh production diary - http://www.fleshofmyflesh.com/PDiary/Guerilla Productions - http://www.guerrilla-productions.org/Toned down Dead Island logo - http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108651-Dead-Island-Publisher-Tones-Down-Logo-for-North-AmericaESRB on Dead Island logo change - http://gamerfront.net/2011/03/dead-island-logo-too-much-for-north-america/7060Zombie defense course in Pittsburgh - http://dormont-brookline.patch.com/articles/back-off-zombie-brookline-business-teaches-zombie-defense#cZomburgh - http://www.zomburgh.com/World War Z in trouble - http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/03/world_war_z_brad_pitt.htmlThe Undead That Saved Christmas Vol. 2 open submissions - http://www.undeadinthehead.com/p/call-for-submissions.html(Various production music produced by Kevin MacLeod.)
