A lot has happened since 2018, but if you think back to that time, you might remember that Canada's cannabis industry was booming.  There were multiple Canadian cannabis businesses that were valued at multiple billions of dollars. People were getting rich trading weed stocks and starting weed companies.  And this wasn't just money moving around, like with meme stocks during the pandemic. The largest companies, like Canopy, Aurora, and Aphria, were spending money to build massive facilities across Canada and hiring thousands of people.  Then it all came crashing down.  Last week, the Nasdaq stock exchange said it would delist Canopy Growth Corp because its stock, which once traded for around $60, has been below the Nasdaq's $1 threshold for too long.  So what happened? On today's episode, Jay Rosenthal joins me to explain what went wrong in the cannabis industry and talk about what's next for the sector both in Canada and the US.  Jay is the Director of Content at Dutchie, a leading tech partner for cannabis retailers around the world, and the co-founder of the Business of Cannabis. ----- Links: More episodes of Free Lunch by The Peak: https://readthepeak.com/shows/free-lunch Follow Taylor on Twitter: @taylorscollon Follow Sarah on Twitter: @sarahbartnicka Subscribe to The Peak's daily business newsletter: https://readthepeak.com/b/the-peak/subscribe

This episode is in German, and there are reasons why. Since my guest today is Finn Age Hänsel, founder of Sanity Group, I thought it was time to give an update in german, what actually has happened and maybe will be happing in a near decriminalised cannabis and psychedelic future. Finn and I talk about how cannabis could treat ADHD in grown ups and I am very grateful that Finn is sharing his own story here. We talk about why are Germans terrified of substances and compounds and why we should stop using the word DRUGS all together. We also talk about why every Cannabis and Psychedelic company has the duty to help destigmatizing cannabis and psychedelics Finn himself is a German consultant and entrepreneur. He is the founder of the Berliner Berg brewery and Sanity Group, the former CEO of the moving company Movinga. He is also a member of the federal board of the Bundesverband Deutscher Start-ups e.V.Finn was born in Flensburg, he founded his first company at the age of 17 with an online store for secondhand sportswear He joined the Junge Union and after graduating from high school in 2001, received a scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which he used to study business administration at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg. In 2010, Hänsel founded the online retailer The Iconic. He also took on the position of Marketing Director at the investment company Rocket Internet in Australia the following year. After returning to germany, Finn worked for high end accelerators and consulting companies. Since 2002 Finn had campaigned for the decriminalization of cannabis as a member of Junge Union. After cannabis and cannabinoids were approved as medicinal products in Germany, Hänsel entered the distribution of medical cannabis. In 2018, he and Fabian Friede founded Sanity Group, which supplies pharmacies and drugstores with cannabidiol products. Two years later, the company joined forces with Aphria and Cannacare to launch the industry association Pro CBD, which they use to raise awareness about cannabis. And yes, Snoop Dog is one of his investors! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

He was employee number 7 at Canopy Growth, which was the first Canadian LP to go public on the TSX and NASDAQ and was dubbed the first unicorn in the cannabis sector. Canopy played a pivotal role in shaping today's cannabis sector and today we are joined by Chris who had first hand experience in catching the monumental growth riding the unicorn wave. In this episode we gain insights on what happened at Canopy. We take a deeper dive into the importance of company culture and how strategic decisions affect it. We look at the differences in strategies between a medical focused company vs an adult use cannabis company and why it's important to differentiate between the two types of customers. As M&A continues to accelerate in the sector, in this episode you'll learn how to view M&A opportunities through a unique qualitative lense. The Cannabis 101 Podcast is your guide through the legalization and consumption of cannabis in Canada and beyond. It's not just about getting high, it's about getting healthy. Catch Hour One on Monday and Hour two on Wednesday.  David Wylie of the oz joins me each week to discuss the latest on This Week in Cannabis News. Things happen fast in the still developing cannabis industry and we'll bring you the top stories. There is tremendous anticipation of the federal legalization of cannabis in the United States, and not just by Americans. Some Canadian companies have heavily invested in the scene by buying up or partnering with their neighbours to the south. Canadian cannabis fans will also benefit as apps and social media platforms will likely change their anti cannabis ways. But it's not all good as one BMO analyst points out. Speaking of American companies owned by a Canadian one, SweetWater Brewing Company, recently purchased by Aphria will have some of their cannabis themed brews hitting store shelves and establishments in Colorado very soon, and there are a few reasons why they picked that state. The New York Times took a long and micro look at legalization in Canada recently, examining whether or not Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government's promises have been kept. It's a very long deep dive story that has some very good points. However it seems a little early to be thinking the system would be perfect in my opinion. Finally we ended with some in the city of Vernon showing their complete ignorance and perpetuating the stigma when it comes to cannabis. This story had my blood boiling and I tried to explain how ridiculous one woman's logic was. Get the latest news from the oz every day here. You can hear full episodes and more at www.Cannabis101Podcast.ca where you can sign up for The Weed Weekly and get in on our Friday giveaway, and you can watch full episodes, individual segments and product reviews on our YouTube channel.
