One of the reasons we decided to start raising pigs almost 20 years ago was because I thought it was the only way we could produce our own homegrown cooking oil — also known as, lard. I assumed that creating oil from seeds and nuts would simply be too challenging for a non-professional.In this episode, author, gardener, and oil maker Bevin Cohen talks about his book, The Complete Guide to Seed & Nut Oils. He dispels that myth that I fell prey to — that making oils at home is too challenging or even impossible for your average person. He also talks about the modern commercial process for making seed oils, and the difference between chemical processing and cold pressed oils. The book includes instructions on growing and foraging dozens of seeds and nuts for making oil, and in our interview, he talks about walnut oil specifically. Why? Because we have a walnut grove on our farm. But I also learned that black walnuts grow in the wild across the US, so even if you don't have a cultivated grove on your farm, you might be able to forage black walnuts growing in the wild.Full show notes here -- https://thriftyhomesteader.com/how-to-make-nut-and-seed-oil/To see the most recent episodes, visit  ThriftyHomesteader.com/BookChat

Cohen and his family left city life some years ago to pursue simple living at their 3-acre Small House Farm—only to find his farming whims pulled him right back to the kind of profit-driven lifestyle he was trying to escape. Hear how Cohen left a marketing career for simpler endeavors in rural central Michigan. Learn about pressing your own cooking oils from nuts and seeds—a fresh, homegrown alternative to grocery-store options. Bevin also tells us about seed libraries—how they work and what they can do for our modern world. And it's just that little bit of success can boost that confidence enough to be like, Okay, let's try that again. Let's push forward on this, let's see where we can take this thing. Even if it doesn't turn out we've tried something new, right and we've grown as a person because of that. But nine times out of 10 it is gonna work out and that's the beauty of pushing your limits, is we can find that we're capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit. Water plant every 3 to 4 weeks. Remove any fruit. Leaves will die back. Once leaves die back you can prune the plant, just trim back so there are a bunch of Y-shaped branches, 3 inches or so in length. To finish your pepper winter care, about a month before your last frost date, bring your pepper plant out of the cool location and move it to a brighter, warmer location. You may even want to use a heating pad under the pot to add additional heat. Resume watering, but Broccoli Broccoli can be planted as early as six weeks before the first frost-free date, but it does best as a fall garden crop. Young plants should be hardened off before transplanting into your garden. Broccoli can tolerate temperatures from 26 to 31 degrees. Brussels sprouts do so well in the cold that they are often harvested well into winter. This is one vegetable that improves in flavor when exposed to cold temperatures. Frosts will actually increase the sugar content, effectively eliminating the bitter taste so often experienced in summer sprouts. Cabbage likes cool temperatures as low as 26 degrees depending on the variety. In fact, you will find they do best in cool fall weather and are rather disappointing in a summer garden. However, if you start them early enough, you can still get a crop before the weather gets too hot. A light frost is thought to improve the sweetness of cabbages. Watch for insects such as cabbage lopers who also like to munch on sweet cabbage plants. Kale can withstand temperatures as low as 10 degrees and is also noted for improved sweetness after frost. A very hardy vegetable, kale not only tolerates the cold, but it hasStore carrots in the ground during cool winter months unless a freeze is expected; if frost is predicted and the roots can’t be protected, dig them up and store them elsewhere. If carrots stay in the ground all winter, harvest them before new top growth starts in spring. Roots stored in the ground through winter should be eaten very soon after harvest; they will not keep well. Store carrots in the ground where the soil freezes if the ground can be insulated from freezing cold. Keep the soil at 35° to 40°F by putting a 10- to a 12-inch-thick layer of hay, leaves, or straw mulch over the rows; extend the mulch on both sides of each row by another 18 inches or more. This should protect roots even beneath two feet of snow. Dig roots through the winter as needed. no problems with insects like cabbage can have. In segment two Joey and Holly talk about Amending soil, Add compost - your own or aged manure, rabbit manure, leaf compost Add leaves Add coffee grounds Think about what it may need Soil test? What are some problems you may be having In segment three Joey and Holly welcome their guest Bevin Cohen is an author, herbalist, gardener, seed saver, educator, and owner of Small House Farm in Michigan.
