Farm Action is a nonpartisan agricultural watchdog organization led by farmers, and Research and Policy Development Director Sarah Carden joins host April Parms Jones to discuss how they provide food-system accountability for farmers. Farm Action advocates for a fair and sustainable food system that empowers farmers and rural communities by focusing on holding large corporations and the government accountable for their actions in agriculture. Hear why specialty crop producers often receive less support compared to commodity crops, and the impact on food pricing and diversity, which is part of the reason why processed foods are often cheaper than vegetables.United States food and agriculture policies currently enable a handful of the world's largest corporations to control our food and farming system at the expense of farmers, workers, and all of us who eat. Hear how Farm Action encourages consumer awareness and education about food labeling as essential parts of supporting local agriculture, and advocates for accountability from both our government and large corporations within the agricultural sector. With thousands of farmers dealing with the uncertainty of the federal funding freeze, we wanted to hear from farmer Gale Livingstone about how the freeze has affected her farm, and some strategies she's employed to deal with the disruption. She's been able to leverage her CSA network and extended farm family through her farm store and email newsletter which are managed by Farmhand. Ari Memar, founder and CEO of Farmhand, tells us about how the Farmhand network has been able to help farmers deal with all kinds of disruptions, from the funding freeze to natural disasters.Gale tells us about how her CSA network stepped in and donated funds to cover some of the shortfall created by the uncertainty. We also hear how people in her community created a new CSA “porch pickup” location with at least 17 new members after hearing the story of how her farm was affected. Ari explains how keeping in contact with CSA members on a regular basis can help them feel more connected to the farm, so they are more likely to want to help out in difficult times. We also hear about how Gale is launching a seedling sale for the first time through her Farmhand store to help with spring cashflow. Having started several farms before their current Lovin' Mama Farm in Amsterdam, New York, we hear from Corinne Hansch and Matthew Leon what they learned from their previous farms, and what they did differently this time. They discuss their journey from California to New York, the challenges of adapting to a new climate, and ways they are trying to find work-life balance on a busy, year-round farm.In order to sell year-round, and hang onto good crew members by not having to let them go at the end of the season, they have branched out into new markets like Etsy, along with several farmers markets and more traditional outlets. Hear how they sell flowers and produce that come back from market (hint: it involves a lot of drying). They also discuss how a strong commitment to regenerative, Real Organic certified practices is the foundation of their farm in this great interview with host Katie Kulla. This week we hear from Sarahlee Lawrence, who runs a full-diet CSA plus events like longtable dinners on the farm she grew up on in the town of Sisters, Oregon. She took the livestock elements her parents pioneered, and added vegetables and more, so they can fill out the menu year-round for their full-diet CSA members and farm-to-table dinner events. Which is all the more impressive due to the fact that the central Oregon high desert climate is not an easy one to grow in, with little precipitation and frost a possibility almost any day of the year.Sarahlee emphasizes the role of her team and apprentices in managing the diverse operations of the farm, as well as the unique culture that has developed around it. She discusses the challenges and realities of farming in a frequently smoke-affected region, the complexities of navigating regulations for animal products, and the management of dairy production, in addition to many greenhouses of vegetables and field production. She also shares insights into their unique full diet model that emphasizes community engagement and sustainability, as well as the evolution of hosting events on the farm to foster connections through food. In this conversation, Sarahlee discusses the intricacies of managing events on her farm, the importance of creating memorable dining experiences, her journey in writing a book, the challenges posed by climate change, and her deep love for farming. SummaryIsco Spirits is not your typical distillery. Founded by Manya Rubenstein and located in an old steel mill in Providence, Rhode Island, Isco stands as the city's first distillery since Prohibition. With deep ties to the local artisan community and a commitment to sustainable practices, Isco produces a range of unique, handcrafted spirits. Their products, like Structural Vodka and Blue Velvet Bourbon, aren't just drinks—they're stories in a bottle. By incorporating elements of regenerative farming and coastal inspiration, Isco creates products that reflect the history and natural beauty of Rhode Island, blending creativity, craftsmanship, and eco-consciousness into every sip.Manya's entrepreneurial journey is a masterclass in adaptability. Opening the distillery in March 2020, right as the world was shutting down due to the pandemic, required bold pivots and quick thinking. Originally designed to welcome guests into a tasting room experience, Isco quickly shifted to making hand sanitizer and engaging with customers through direct sales. From that challenging beginning, Isco evolved into a brand known for its imaginative offerings like Ostrata, a vodka distilled with oysters, and Sea Flow gin, which incorporates seaweed as a key ingredient. These products are inspired by Rhode Island's coastal heritage and highlight Manya's goal of using spirits as a medium for storytelling. At the heart of Isco is a commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community. From supporting local farms and reusing spent grains to crafting spirits that honor the ocean, Isco's approach extends far beyond production. Their “Night of Cheer” holiday event showcases their passion for giving back, collecting donations for local causes while bringing people together for a festive experience. With plans for expanded distribution and new products on the horizon, Manya's vision remains clear: create exceptional, thoughtful spirits that spark connection, tell stories, and celebrate the place they call home. TakeawaysResilience Sparks Innovation: Isco's ability to pivot during the 2020 pandemic shows how entrepreneurs can turn adversity into opportunity, finding creative ways to stay relevant and connected with their audience.Sustainability Creates a Competitive Edge: By focusing on regenerative farming, eco-friendly production, and coastal conservation, Isco isn't just making spirits—they're building a movement. Their use of oysters, seaweed, and farm-grown grains differentiates them in the competitive distilling industry.Storytelling as a Brand Strategy: Isco Spirits tells a larger story through its products, branding, and community events like "Night of Cheer." By weaving local history, environmental awareness, and artistry into each spirit, Isco builds a deeper emotional connection with consumers.
Pete Russell used his experience in the food industry to design Ooooby, a sales platform for farmers to sell directly to the public. Their goal is to put local, ecologically sound growers back at the heart of the food system. Ooooby integrates all the apps one would use to build an online farm store into their software to simplify the process for farmers and offer a seamless experience for the customer. The platform has been available in Australia, New Zealand and the UK and is now becoming available in North America. Driftless Seed Company is part of an encouraging trend we are seeing with regional seed companies producing seed in and with adaptations to their specific region. On this week's podcast, we have Cody Egan and Dylan Bruce of Driftless Seed Company, telling host April Parms Jones how they went from farming and working for a seed company to founding one. Dylan had to leave part way through the interview due to technical difficulties, so we get the rest of the story from Cody.Driftless Seed Company focuses on providing regional, open-pollinated seeds to farmers and gardeners in the Midwest. The company works closely with growers to understand their preferences and what grows well for them, and they offer different models for growers to earn income from seed production, including a commission-based model. They emphasize the importance of joy and inspiration in farming and seed work, and supporting local seed economies and building relationships with growers and communities. North Crawford School District is making strides in enhancing the quality and sustainability of its school meals by incorporating locally sourced ingredients. The initiative began as a response to the disruptions in the food supply chain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a significant shortage of food in grocery stores and schools alike. During the pandemic, the federal government introduced Supply Chain Assistance Funds and Wisconsin's Local Foods for Schools program, which North Crawford utilized to address these challenges. Jen Kapinus, the Director of Food Services at North Crawford School District, explains, “We were able to take advantage of these funds during a time when sourcing food locally became crucial. The improvement in meal quality from local sources was so significant that we knew we had to continue this approach.” The district has focused on sourcing beef from three local farms: Young Family Farms, Spring Creek Meats, and Mountain Lane Farms. Kapinus notes, “In our area, we're surrounded by family farms, so it wasn't difficult to find local suppliers. We ensure that these farms meet USDA standards and fit within our procurement process.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we talk with Charley Jordan about making the move from the military into farming. Charley is the owner/operator of Jordan Farms, in Indian Mound, Tennessee. After serving nearly 30 years in the Army, flying Chinook helicopters with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Charley retired in 2017 and found a new mission in agriculture and has devoted himself to helping other veterans and beginning farmers find their purpose in agriculture. Charley was also in the inaugural cohort of a horticulture therapy certificate program launched at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.Jordan Farms specializes in fresh-cut flowers, forest-grown mushrooms, and other farm-fresh products. Charley is a nationally featured advocate for veterans transitioning to agriculture and the mental health benefits of therapeutic horticulture. We think it would be great if we had more farmers in more communities; and at the same time, with over a million people in the active-duty military, when they decide to leave the military, veterans are an important demographic that could contribute to the numbers of farmers. In Shop Talk with Neversink Farm, we chat about new tools, old tools, how they can benefit your farm and tips to use them successfully with Conor Crickmore of Neversink Tools, which manufactures tools for farmers. In this episode of Shop Talk, we discuss soil blocks, what makes them such a good medium for seedlings, their difficulties, and the alternatives with the same benefits and fewer drawbacks, such as Winstrip trays and paper chain pots. Thanks to our collaborator on this podcast Neversink Farm. On this episode of Building Local Power, ILSR's Linda Bilsens Brolis and Sophia Hosain speak with Emma Jagoz, owner of Moon Valley Farm in Maryland. They discuss the benefits of local family farms to food system resilience, food accessibility, and having more nutritious and delicious food. Highlights include: What motivated Emma to get into farming, and her long-term mission to improve soil health and the biodiversity of farms. How Moon Valley Farm uses compost to build healthy soils. How the pandemic impacted farm operations and increased the public's interest in local food. Challenges small farmers face such as land access, labor, and the lack of sustainable agriculture training programs. The importance of farming year-round and partnering with other farmers to build a sustainable and robust food system. Regenerative agriculture practices are rooted in Indigenous knowledge and practices. Read ILSR's land acknowledgement here. “I wanted to shorten the chain between myself, my neighbors, and their food. Because it just connects the farmer and the consumers so directly. And I can communicate with my customers exactly what's in season, exactly how to prepare it. It just felt so magical.” “I think COVID brought to light a lot of different issues, especially with the food supply and what is considered essential. Our community members were able to access food through our farm via home delivery, and also pick-up locations with some new COVID safe practices throughout the whole time — from when COVID began in March in 2020 to today.” Related Resources Posters: Compost Impacts More Than You Think Hierarchy to Reduce Food Waste & Grow Community ILSR's On-Farm Composting & Compost Use Webinar Series Journey to Soil Health… with Emma Jagoz, Moon Valley Farm Transcript Jess Del Fiacco: Hello, and welcome to Building Local Power, a podcast dedicated to thought provoking conversations about how we can challenge corporate monopolies, and expand the power of people to shape their own future. I'm Jess Del Fiacco, the host of Building Local Power and communications manager here at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. For more than 45 years, ILSR has worked to build thriving, equitable communities where power, wealth, and accountability remain in local hands. Jess Del Fiacco: On today's episode. You're going to hear from my colleagues Sophia Hussein, and Linda Bilsens Brolis, as well as a farmer named Emma Jagoz. They're going to discuss the role of composting in farming and in our food system. But before we get to that main conversation though, Sophia and I are going to briefly set the table for you guys. So I'm here with Sophia Hussein. Hey Sophia, welcome. Sophia Hosain: Hi everyone. Jess Del Fiacco: But a few minutes, our listeners are going to hear from Emma about her farm, which is called Moon Valley Farm, and her journey that she took to feed her family and feed her community. So Sophia, could you just give us a bird's eye view of the role of composting in a sustainable food system? Sophia Hosain: Absolutely! I think it's really fitting that we're publishing this episode around Thanksgiving. A day when many of us are thinking about food, abundance, and gratitude even more so than usual. So in this interview, we talk with Emma from Moon Valley Farm, about how she's created a resilient farm ecosystem by harnessing biodiversity, partnering with other farmers and by using compost. And I think it's important to note that as our population grows, so does the importance of supporting local food systems. Sophia Hosain: By avoiding those long shipping distances, like bringing food over from California. We're able to cut the carbon footprint of what we eat, and build local food system resiliency by keeping those resources in our own local economy. And before we dive in, I do want to take a moment to acknowledge that it is indigenous communities who really spearheaded the regenerative agricultural movement.
