In today’s episode, guest hosted by lawyer turned 5th grade school teacher turned 18th Century docent, Janet Wade, who happens to be married to host Landis Wade, we visit with Bob Deans, author of “The Bicycle Man,” a novel that allows the reader to experience the emotional and turbulent headlines of 1968 as seen through the eyes of a young paperboy. Bob Deans started out in the news business when he was ten years old, delivering his hometown paper, the "Richmond Times-Dispatch." He spent three decades as a reporter for "The Post & Courier" of Charleston, S.C., and "The Atlanta Journal-Constitution," including four years as Chief Asia Correspondent, based in Tokyo, and eight years covering the White House and he's a former president of the White House Correspondents' Association Major Garrett, Chief Washington Correspondent, CBS News, says of the book: “Lyrical, lustrous and tender. Deans is a craftsman, and the words here flow with certainty, truth and ache, taking us into the promise, discovery and heart of a boy as the world outside both marches forward and encroaches on his own. Special guest Lia Berman, the host from Parental Advisory with Lia Berman, talks with Not-My-Cousin Dan and OtraVez about special episodes. These odd episodes attempted to tackle difficult subjects usually in a sitcom. They seemed to be quite the phenomena during the '80s through into the '90s. They were attempts at the cautionary tale. Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Diff'rent Strokes To Move The World: An Unofficial Diff'rent Strokes Podcast. Today, I covered S1E6: Goodbye Dolly, which aired on December 8, 1978. In this episode after Kimberly donates Arnold's ratty old doll named Homer to charity and it is sold, he can't sleep. Mr. Drummond quickly tires of this, so he hires a detective to try and find the doll. I thought was a cute episode and I got some serious Punky Brewster Season 1 vibes from the comparison of Arnold losing his doll Homer (it's actual a Paddington Bear) and Punky losing her doll in the Bye Bye My episode, where Punky was grieving her of not just her doll but another connection being severed between her old life with her Mom and moving forward with her new life with Henry she learns to accept a new doll she names Henrietta after, you guessed it, Henry. I felt this episode kinda short changed us, Arnold had not been sleeping for days since he usually sleep with his doll and also was keeping the family up, Phillip explains to Arnold that he needs to move on after his loss, I mean he tried to find the doll even spent $200 on a detective and still he couldn't find it. I wish we could have got character growth from Arnold in this episode as we did with Punky where she accepted the loss with a heavy heart and took the steps to move on. Now that I think about it, she and Arnold are the same age in the Season 1 of their shows, but both handled a similar situation differently. I guess to each their own. I like how Willis apologized to Arnold and told him he would never hurt him intentionally, even though he was the one to give the bear to Kimberly who sold it in the charity auction for a measly 15 cents, all though the guy talked them down to 10 cents. I gotta ask, what man what's a used, worn old doll or Paddington Bear? Thinking back on this episode now, I'm getting uncomfortable Bicycle Man vibes. We never seen the man in question get the bear, so who really knows. Join me next week when I cover S1E7: The Trial, which aired on December 15, 1978. In this episode after reading a book on the American legal system, Willis demands a fair trial for Arnold after he is accused of putting his goldfish in the hot tub. Have a great week everyone! When I was a kid, sometimes TV shows would have the very special episode, which would deal with a difficult or controversial subject. Do you remember these? Topics dealt with things such as AIDS, teen pregnancy, or drug use. Memorable ones include The Bicycle Man on Different Strokes (The Maytag man was a naughty boy) and A, My Name is Alex, on Family Ties when Alex has to confront his emotions after the death of a friend. Well, today we have a very special episode of Uncorking a Story. Normally on this show I interview authors about their lives and give them an opportunity to discuss their latest book with you, but I'm changing course with this one. Last week, for my day job, I interviewed a woman whose story stayed with me as I found it both heartbreaking and inspiring. I walked away from that conversation with a reminder that life can be what we make it. Even when the cards are seemingly stacked against us, we can choose how to frame our situations and what to focus on. Sometimes, it just takes a leap of faith. I'd really appreciate letting me know what you think of this episode. If you like it, I will share more stories like this in the future. Please email me at michael.carlon@uncorkingastory.com to let me know what you think.

When Manhattan SVU detectives are called to the scene of a child killed by a car, they discover he is the adopted son of rock stars Ricki Austin and Jared Black. Ricki believes he ran out in pursuit of the man who allegedly abused him, his former computer teacher. But while visiting the family home, Detective Olivia Benson meets Ricki's daughter, Ashley, who becomes immediately and profoundly attached to the detective; suggesting a case of extreme parental neglect. Soon, Benson finds herself fielding constant phone calls from Ashley and trying to use the system to get the kid some help. But will everyone from Ashley's parents to Captain Cragen see this as Benson's attempt to steal a child? Erik, Justin, and Assistant District Attorney Louis Allred attempt to remember Corbin, the child who begins this strange journey. Justin outlines Benson's side-business as a sex swing manufacturer. Erik tries to recall the British au pair scandal from the 1990s. Swamp Thing makes a brief appearance to ruin a New Yorker's life. Justin makes it 18 minutes before making a "Bicycle Man" reference. Carlo Masucci makes his debut while Louis tries out "Paul Lynde, Mob Hit Man." Erik explains the importance of the 27th Precinct and the Special Review Unit crew attempts to figure out the best way to cook artisanal rat.
Boys are back again. They talk Jeremy's final plans. Doing heroin when you hit 70, and break down part two of the Bicyle Man.
This ones not for the faint at heart as the boys break down a very disturbing episode of Diff'rent Strokes.
Bart, Norma and Voretaq discuss the weather, the holiday, and there's a fun biblically-themed video to watch. Also, Bicycle Man is having a recumbent sale!
“The Bicycle Man: Part 2” February 12, 1983 We’re joined by friend of the show Mike Limata to finish out the Tragedy of The Bicycle Man: Part 2. We last left Arnold (Gary Coleman) and Dudley (Shavar Ross) in the clutches of the vile Bicycle Store owner Mr. Horton (Gordon Jump). Little does Horton know that Mr. Drummond (Conrad Bain) has secretly gone to the bike shop to settle up for Arnold's bike. The boys make their daring escape only to be caught by Kimberly (Dana Plato) and Willis (Todd Bridges) reeking of Horton’s cheap wine. Arnold lies that Dudley’s father gave the boys a sip with dinner. Arnold and Dudley make their way back to the dreaded bicycle shop for one last confrontation. Horton gives the boys more wine and this time shows them some adult themed entertainment featuring everyone’s favorite cartoon mascot Murphy Mouse! This is finally too much for Arnold who takes his generous slice of Boston cream pie and high tails it out of there. Back at the Drummond residence, Dudley’s father Ted (Le Tari) pays Mr. Drummond a visit with a simple request - stop serving my child liquor. Arnold is summoned to explain himself and the pieces finally start to fall into place. Our small band of heroes race to the bicycle shop to save Dudley from certain doom. Will our heroes arrive in time? Will Dudley have given in to the temptation of a roofie-colada? Will Arnold even want to ride that bike after this mess is over and done with? The answer to these questions and more lie within the newest episode of Very Special Television. Diff'rent Strokes The Bicycle Man: Part 1 - February 5, 1983 We hemmed and hawed and dragged our feet until we could drag no longer. We watched The Bicycle Man: Part 1 and I think I need a drink. This "classic" episode of Diff'rent Strokes is one that we here at VSTV get asked about regularly so we reviewed it just for you. For the unfamiliar, Diff'rent Strokes follows Arnold (Gary Coleman) and Willis Jackson (Todd Bridges) - two brothers from Harlem taken in by wealthy Manhattan businessman Philip Drummond (Conrad Bain) and his daughter Kimberly (Dana Plato). This episode begins with Arnold and his school chum Dudley (Shavar Ross) handing out flyers for the bicycle shop owner Mr. Horton (Gordon Jump) - unaware that he is a sexual predator. Horton invites the boys to his apartment behind the bike shop filled with video games, comic books and frozen pizza and serves the boys some wine since "we're all adults here." Gross. Things get weird really fast as Horton starts an impromptu photo session but Arnold and Dudley are still too naive to worry. I'm worried. This episode ends on a cliff-hanger and my nerves are shot! Will Arnold and Dudley make it out this dirt-bag's den of horrors? Will Mr. Drummond go HAM on Horton when he finds out? Will I be able to sleep without a nightlight again? Find out on this episode of Very Special Television!! State of the Sitcom continues... What happens when the laughs stop? This week the miniseries looks at tears of sadness rather than laughter as we reach episode five. We're joined by @Amita Patel and @Sean David Johnson, the incredibly insightful and enigmatic hosts of Inside Pop Podcast to discuss what happens when sitcoms try to tackle the big issues. Diving deep into some well known moments when things got way too real in our favourite sitcoms, we share the tears, the education and the power behind Diff'rent Strokes' The Bicycle Man, Fresh Prince of Bel Air's Papa's Got a Brand New Excuse, Ellen's The Puppy Episode, How I Met Your Mother's Last Words, and many more. We discuss whether the medium is successful at dealing with serious topics, how modern sitcoms tackle the issues differently to the classics and whether Keeping Up Appearances 'made' it in America! State of the Sitcom will return later in the summer with more special guests and a whole new host of your favourite TV funnies to dissect, your normal JoJCast schedule will resume from next week, with a slight twist ;) Happy Sitcom-ing, JoJ x

Blues roots singer-songwriter Kerri Powers is getting ready to release her new album "Starseeds". Kerri Powers produced one of our favourite recordings of 2014, her stunning self-titled album. Produced with Eric Michael Lichter, Starseeds features eight original songs and two great covers - Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” and Gene Clark's “Polly”. It's clear that this new recording is again going to do very well - and, hopefully, will get Kerri Powers up on to the radar of a lot more people - she really is the real deal. To learn more about the new album, Folk Roots Radio caught up with Kerri Powers at home in Connecticut. Check out Kerri Powers at http://kerripowers.com. Visit Folk Roots Radio online at folkrootsradio.com. Music: Kerri Powers "Bicycle Man", "Free Bird Flying", "Grace and Harmony" and "Can't Find My Way Home" from "Starseeds" (2018, Self).

Welcome to the very first episode of "A Very Special Episode", the podcast which reviews "very special" episodes of pop culture! For our first episode, regular hosts Ryan, Carol, Austin & David (aka the Aluminum Four) tackle the always-hilarious subjects of child molestation and growth-stunting kidney disease via the two part Diff'rent Strokes episode "The Bicycle Man", in which Arnold (Gary Coleman) and his friend Dudley run afoul of the overly- and creepily-friendly owner of the local bike shop, in one of the more well-known "very special episodes" of the 80s. How well does the episode impart its message? How awkward is the required-for-its-time studio laughter when applied to a subject this serious? How do we manage to make an entertaining podcast out of such sensitive subject matter? You'll have to listen to find out! And you can do so by downloading the episode here and, shortly, via iTunes and various other podcast providers. You can also follow the show on Twitter, like our Facebook page, and email us via avsepodcast@gmail.com. Drop us a line via any of those methods and let us know what you think of the show! http://media.averyspecialepisodepodcast.com/AVerySpecialEpisode001.mp3
Young Arnold and his best friend Dudley love riding bikes. Unfortunately, the owner of their local bike shop loves riding young boys! Squirm in discomfort as you watch a dumpy, disgusting sexual predator invade an otherwise innocent sitcom in this “very special” storyline, The Bicycle Man. TortureVision Rating: GOODGood features were better than expected. Bad features were awful, yet still enjoyable. Abortions were utter torment to sit through. Right-Click "Save As" to download .MP3!
Doug Dunlop is a regular in our Bike Town. While today we usually see him riding with his family, he has a wild history of bike-adventures to share with us that tells the story of the earliest fat bikes. While you're listening, check out Doug (@coldbike) on Twitter and Instagram.
This is a very special episode. Greg Tuculescu stops by the watch a two-parter of Diff'rent Strokes that deals with child-molestation.
On a special episode of The Projection Booth we look at Amy Berg's documentary An Open Secret, a hard-hitting expose about the exploitation of children in the entertainment industry.
This week on the show the guys dive in to perhaps the darkest sitcom of all time. Can Gary Coleman make any situation hilarious? Are bike shops forever a scary place? Will we ever find out what really happened to Dudley? Slimb and Todd dissect the Diff'rent Strokes episode 'The Bicycle Man' this week. Enjoy the show. This is Very Special Episode!
