Within a year after getting his first guitar donated by his sister's boyfriend, Jimmy Gilmer of Sugar Shack fame, Jim Parker was playing in a band and later became a founding member of The Illusions that landed a record deal with Dot Records. In 1966 he and his buddies decided to leave their hometown of Amarillo, Texas, and head to Los Angeles. During that time, The Illusions became “The Kitchen Cinq” recording with Lee Hazelwood's LHI label for three years. This later led to jobs with other recording bands like Armageddon and THEM (post Van Morrison) with some studio work with Sonny and Cher and various recording artists on the side. Fifty years later, on August 28, 2015, AceRecords of the UK and its affiliate US label Light in the Attic Records released “The Kitchen Cinq, When the Rainbow Disappears”, as an anthology complete with a booklet of photos and history of the band.Moving to Nashville in 1975 was the beginning of another serendipitous phase of Jim's career where he met a young John Anderson and began writing successful chart songs. Then Jim branched out and has co-written with many #1, Hall of Fame and Grammy winning songwriters over the years and continues to do so today. Jim is the creator and host of a popular series at the Von Braun Center Playhouse in Huntsville, AL since 2005 called Jim Parker's Songwriters Series ® where he showcases the incredible talent of his hit songwriter friends from Nashville, Muscle Shoals, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Canada and surrounding areas. It's World Pride 2023 and the queer globe is converging on Sydney Australia to celebrate diversity, inclusion, community and fabulousness! To mark this momentous event the STAGES podcast is saluting the cast of captivating drag divas and personalities who have been featured on the podcast during the past 5 seasons. They are artists who have appeared on national and global stages; thrilling audiences, making a difference, healing community and expressing unique and wondrous talents. We spotlight these episodes so you can savour a second listen - or so you can sample the delights of these entertainers for the very first time. A Diva a day for each day of World Pride! In the bohemian world that is drag, few artists can lay claim to the exulted and ebullient eccentricity that is Cindy Pastel. The alter ego of performer Ritchie Finger, Cindy has been delighting, thrilling and astonishing audiences for close to 45 years. Guided through life by a signature catch cry ‘Is Everybody Happy?' Pastel has ensured that we are always a satisfied audience. A unique talent, Finger has inspired generations of drag performers who have followed in his fabulous footsteps - whether they be in stilettos or skates. Ritchie Finger arrived in Sydney from Melbourne in 1979 and became one of the many young drag addicts to work at Patches (later DCM) Nightclub on Sydney's celebrated Oxford street. An auspicious beginning, entering a talent quest under the drag name Barbara Mattel (Barbie), allowed Finger to make an indelible impression. Though he didn't earn a place. Finger discovered ‘Barbie' had a younger sister and so, Cindy Pastel was born. The song that Finger performed was ‘A Love Like Yours Don't Keep Knocking Every Day' featuring both Sonny AND Cher. “Once on stage I felt like I had been there before and my world became my stage for evermore”. In the early part of the A.I.D.S. crisis, Pastel was a tireless worker for HIV/AIDS organisations and charities. The decimation of community was enormous and Pastel states “I believe the microphone was my personal way of unleashing anger towards the hideous disease. I felt like an Andrews sister doing her bit through shows during war time”. Cindy Pastel exploded in the 80's and was in high demand performing shows at the Hordern Pavillion for Mardi Gras, Sleaze Ball, Bacchanalia, Rat, and Sweatbox parties. Cindy Pastel worked at The iconic Albury Hotel for many years forming a group called ‘The Showbags' consisting of Miss 3D, Twisty (Pat Gently) and numerous other showbag fill-ins such as Kandy Conrad and Sara Pax. Cindy formed other drag ensembles at pubs and clubs like Stranded Nightclub, where she worked with Channelle Saint Laurent and Christina. They were called ‘The 3C's' At The Exchange Hotel Cindy performed with a group called ‘Mixed Company' with Julie Ashton, Ginger Benson, and Polly Petrie as the male dancer. Finger's performance work has also extended beyond drag as an actor in Richard Wherett's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, staged at The Sydney Opera House and roles in the films The Everlasting Secret Family, Desire, Hand Job, Gone Tomorrow and the documentary Ladies Please! The celebrated film Priscilla - Queen of the Desert entered Ritchie Finger's world when his life story inspired the character of Tick, played by Hugo Weaving. Finger travelled to London and The Cannes film festival to promote the film and further his own adventure. A delicious icing for the remarkable cake of Ritchie Finger's career was sitting in the silver shoe atop the Priscilla bus, in the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. A recognition that celebrated the seminal film and the fabulous community of drag queens who have worked the stages of Sydney. Cindy Pastel has been recognised by the DIVAs - The Drag Industry Variety Awards - twice in her illustrious career. A career that has reached incredible peaks and challenged with occasional obstacles. But through it all Ritchie Finger
Can you BELIEVE we found Cher in the thrift shop this week?! Cher has been super-famous for a staggering SEVEN decades! She's an omnipresent icon! Hard to imagine that once upon a time nobody knew who she was. Her pre-fame existence and subsequent rise to fame are as interesting and colourful as her enduring career. This was someone destined and determined to make a mark on the world and that's exactly what she went and did ( with a little help from Sonny). This is a brand new podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.THANK YOU FOR LISTENINGThrift Shop Biography

Sonny and Cher started their career as backup singers for Phil Spector. Many never knew that Sonny could not read music and Cher is dyslectic. She’ll demonstrate that and laugh about it when she records a voice track for me. The last time I saw Sonny and Cher together was in 1974 at Mitchell Field. They had arrived in Hugh Hefner’s big bunny plane. Cher went directly to a waiting limo and would not talk to anyone. I could see there was friction between the couple and shortly thereafter it was announced that they were divorcing. In these conversations we discuss their music, marriage, and divorce. And all was fine until I asked Cher a rather personal question. All of the ladies loved her answer.

The career odyssey of Sonny and Cher began in a recording studio, led to an abortive attempt at movies and finally to TV, where their comedy-variety show was one of the most popular of the 1970s. At the same time, it shaped Cher as a showbiz and fashion icon and led to the breakup of their marriage in front of all America, and then their reconciliation -- on the tube, at least.
“Animal Tracks” by The Animals Wayne hosts this episode on The Animals. Formed in 1962 as an electric blues/rock band, The Animals followed a trend amongst many British Invasion groups of the day in arranging blues songs in a rock format. They would later get more psychedelic, but the album Animal Tracks is from their earlier, blues-focused era. Eric Burdon fronts the group, and The Animals would become Eric Burdon and the Animals after some of the original members left in 1966. Join us as we get out of this place and to the sixties blues of The Animals! Club a GoGo This original song written by the group is named after a club in Newcastle, England. The place opened as a jazz club but went rock with acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Spencer Davis, Wilson Picket and Ike & Tina Turner playing there. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood This song was written for the jazz singer and pianist Nina Simone in 1964. The Animals picked up the tempo in their pop single. We Got to Get Out of This Place Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote this song intended for The Righteous Brothers. The Animals producer snagged it, and it has become an iconic song. It was very popular with the U.S. Armed Forces GI's during the Vietnam War. It's My Life This track was recorded around the same time as this album, but did not make it onto any album at the time. It would later be included on Animal Tracks as a bonus track. It was also performed during the mid 70's by Bruce Springsteen during his "Born to Run" tour. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme song to "I Dream of Jeannie" - Barbara Eden's claim to fame. Theme song to "Get Smart" - Mel Brooks broke into television with this spy spoof. STAFF PICKS: Sonny and Cher - I Got You Babe Brian loves this, the biggest hit of Sonny and Cher's duet run. Sonny and Cher produced this signature song one night in their basement. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass — A Taster of Honey Rob says, “this is just a happy song.” This instrumental was recorded by The Beatles in 1963, but Alpert's version was more popular. Them - Gloria Leave it to Bruce to find a one-named artist and one-word song...The original recording from "The Angry Young Them" was written by a very young Van Morrison, who fronted this early garage band group from Belfast. The Castaways - Liar, Liar Wayne brings us this one hit wonder group out of Minnesota, The Castaway's hit mourns an unfaithful girlfriend. LAUGH TRACK: Alvin Cash & The Crawlers - Twine Time This instrumental R&B tune takes us to the finish of this week's podcast.
