INTRODUCTION In verses 1-4 of this second chapter, Paul wrote about "The Unity That Produces Joy", in which he described: The MOTIVATION for having this unity The NATURE of this unity The ATTITUDES necessary to have this unity In describing the latter, he called upon the Philippians to: Do nothing through selfish ambition or conceit Have lowliness of mind in which they esteem others better than themselves Look out for the interests of others, and not only those of their own In verse 5, Paul continues to exhort them to have "this mind" (the attitudes of verses 3-4), pointing out that this is also the "mind of Christ" In verses (6-11), Paul defines the "mind of Christ" (or the attitude of Christ v6 Jesus did not have SELFISH AMBITION OR CONCEIT He abandoned a Sovereign Position PRIOR TO HIS INCARNATION or coming in human flesh Jesus was "in the form of God" The word form in Greek is morphe- the essence or literally the essential nature of something In other words, He has always existed as God – John 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad." 57 Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" 58 Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me. 16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Col 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. He was also "equal with God" John 1:1 3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1John 5:7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. V6 YET CHRIST DID NOT CONSIDER SUCH EQUALITY "ROBBERY"... Literally, "a thing to be grasped"; that is, something to be laid hold of, and retained jealously Isaiah 14:12 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! 13 For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' 15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit. The "glory" of equality with God which Christ enjoyed from eternity was not something He felt like He HAD to cling on to A true demonstration of a lack of selfish ambition and conceit on the part of our Lord! Jesus LOOKED OUT FOR THE INTERESTS OF OTHERS (7-8) He took a servant's place and approached a sinful people WHEN CHRIST BECAME FLESH... V7 1. He "made Himself of no reputation" John 4:24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Some versions say, "emptied Himself” this is the Kenosis or self-emptying Jn 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. First of all, He gave up His heavenly glory. He gave up His heavenly glory. He dove into the water and went all the way down to the black cold water to the slime and the ooze of this world. And that's why He cries out in John 17 and says, "Father, restore Me to the glory I had with You before the world began." Glory when He was face to face with God. He gave up His glory for the muck of this earth. He gave up the worship of angels, the adoring presence of angels for the spittle of men. He gave up all of the shining brilliance of the glories of heaven for the dark prison where He was kept before His death. Yes, He emptied out His glory in that sense. Secondly, He emptied Himself of independent authority. I don't understand how the trinity operates. I know it operates in perfect harmony. In addition, I know that in perfect harmony, there would be no discord and no disagreement and that would be the way it is in the trinity. Nonetheless, in some way mysterious to my mind, which I will never understand, He completely submitted Himself to the will of the Father. I will never understand that and I don't want you to even think about it too long or you'll be under the bed saying the Greek alphabet because it does not compute. However, the point is He laid aside a voluntary exercise of His own will and He learned to be a servant and He submitted Himself. In addition, He was obedient, it says in verse 8. He was obedient. I don't understand that but He was obedient. In the garden He says, "Not My will but Thine be done." He learned obedience by the things He suffered, Hebrews 5 says. He said I am...I am come to do the Father's will, John 5:30. Therefore, He set aside His independent authority. Thirdly, He set aside the prerogatives of His deity. Alternatively, He set aside the voluntary use of His attributes. You say, "Did He stop being omniscient?" No. "Did He stop being omnipresent?" No. "Did He stop being unchangeable God?" No. He didn't stop being anything; He just didn't use those attributes. Some have said He gave up the prerogatives of His deity. I know He was omniscient. He knew everything because He knew what was in the heart of a man, John 2. I know He was omnipresent because He saw Nathaniel when He wasn't even where Nathaniel was in His human form. He didn't give up any of His deity but He gave up the free exercise of those attributes and limited Himself to the point where in Matthew 24:36 He says, "No man knows when the Son of Man will come," not men and not even the Son of Man. He restricted His omniscience. So He gave up the rights of His deity. Fourthly, He gave up His personal riches...He gave up His personal riches. Though He was rich yet for your sakes He became poor, 2 Corinthians 8:9, that you through His poverty might be made rich. He became terribly poor in this world...terribly poor. He had nothing...nothing. And then lastly, , He gave up a favorable relationship to God. "He who knew no sin was made sin for us...He who knew no sin was made sin for us." And as a result, He says, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" He gave up a favorable relationship to God. Though He gave up the full expression of his heavenly glory and the full enjoyment of it, though He gave up independent authority and exercise of His own will and learned obedience, though He gave up the prerogatives to express all of the majesty of all of His attributes which He could have done, by the way, and though He gave up personal riches for the poverty of this world and though He gave up a favorable relationship with God when He was made sin, He never ceased to be God, never. He remained fully God. He remained fully God. He took upon Himself "the form of a servant" – same word Morphe, literally became a servant. John 13:3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." He came in the likeness of men He was the same as a man, but different in that He was sinless Likeness means He was truly human, wept, got hungry, tired in all ways like us but without sin He could experience their temptations and sufferings – He 2:17-18 17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. V8 And being found in appearance as a man – He looked like us because He was like us. He "humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross" Galatians 3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree") DO WE HAVE "THE MIND OF CHRIST"? We do, if we are looking out for the interests of others We do, if we are willing to humble ourselves, even sacrifice ourselves if it be in the best interests of others 1Jn 3:16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. III. Jesus is HIGHLY EXALTED BY GOD (9-11) – He ascended as a Supreme Prince V9 JESUS is a good example of Matthew 23:12: "He that humbles himself shall be exalted" 1Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, For God has highly exalted Jesus By giving Him "the name LORD which is above every name" Ac 4:12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." V10 that at His name "every knee should bow...that every tongue should confess" He is Lord! - 2Th 1:10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed. V11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. We have seen in this passage that "The Mind Of Christ" involves... Humility Obedience Sacrifice Great Reward It was Christmas Eve in the Midwest. There was a man who had been in a family where his wife and his children were Christians but he was not. And he rejected it. He sat home that Christmas eve in front of the fire. It was cold out and the snow was blowing. His wife and the little children had gone to the chapel in the nearby village for a Christmas Eve service to honor the Christ they loved. He sat by the fire reading the paper. All of a sudden, he heard a loud and repeated thumping. He thought someone was banging on the door. He went to the door and opened it but found no one was there. By the time he got settled back into his chair, he heard it again and again. And he was bewildered as to what was causing it until he realized that something seemed to be smashing against the window. And so he went to the drapes and he pulled the drapes aside and to his amazement, a flock of birds was flying into the window. A snowstorm, you see, had blown in. And the birds had been caught away from their shelter and they couldn't find their way back. They couldn't fight the wind. They saw the lighted window and the warmth of the light had attracted them. And they were literally flying into the glass trying to get to the light to get warm. They would freeze to death, you see, if they didn't find some shelter. Well, the man who had refused to go with his family to the Christmas Eve service because he had no interest in the Christ of Christmas was all of a sudden very compassionate for these poor birds. And so he wondered how he could help them. And so he opened the door, went out in the cold, and tried to chase them away so that they wouldn't kill themselves against the window. And then he ran to the barn and he threw the doors open and he whistled and he shooed them and did everything he could to get them to fly to the barn, they wouldn't do it. He even went so far as to take some corn and some bread and make a big trail from the window to the barn. And they wouldn't follow it. In frustration, he said to himself, "If I could just communicate with them. If I could just tell them that I don't want to hurt them, that there's warmth and there's shelter and that they'd need to stop beating themselves to death against the glass. But I'm a man and they're birds and we don't speak the same language. Oh, if I could just become a bird, I think I could tell them." And then it hit him. And in that moment, said Paul Harvey, the whole meaning of Christmas dawned on that man. Mankind had been beating itself to death against the barrier that kept him from the warmth of God's love until somebody became a man and told us the way. Mark 8:36 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” -John 8:32 Our mission is to spread the gospel and to go to the least of these with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ; We reach out to those the World has forgotten. hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.net https://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en His Love Ministries on Itunes Don't go for all the gusto you can get, go for all the God (Jesus Christ) you can get. Truly the preaching of the gospel is foolishness to them that perish but to those who are saved, it is the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18). We see many mock the gospel today the very way the sons-in-law of Lot mocked the idea of Sodom's destruction. Many have gone so far as to question whether rapture would ever happen. But we know that God meant every word He Had said and none will fall to the ground. The Christians are debtors to those who are unsaved. We are called to preach the word in season and out of season. When it is convenient and when it is not. We must remember that men are appointed to die once and then judgment follows. Read the full blog post here

Without God’s favor we’re screwed, and Jacob knew that. He HAD to have God’s favor or his brother was going to kill him. Without God’s favor Daniel would have been killed. Joseph would have rotted in prison. Ruth would have found herself without a family, and without it you and I will be screwed too. We all need to pray for God’s favor. Dr. David Swanson | Those who did not see Christ in resurrected form did not believe, and yet the overwhelming eyewitness testimony was that He HAD been raised. The Bodily resurrection - and its proofs - give us courage and confidence in this culture. God is not all mystery. he can be touched - and was. Death is now - and finally - defeated. Our future is secure. Bodily resurrection makes all that possible. John 20:24-31
He Had to Be Made Like Us Pastor Ben Porter Hebrews 2:9-18
We take a look at why Jesus had to go to Jerusalem to face the inevitable outcome…that He HAD to die.
God wants you to Know: All Things Are Possible to God Who Calls Those Things Which Are Not As Though They Were.Jesus said to His disciples, Truly I say to you, it will be difficult for a rich man to get into the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to go into the kingdom of heaven. When the disciples heard this, they were utterly puzzled (astonished, bewildered), saying, Who then can be saved from eternal death? But Jesus looked at them and said, With men this is impossible, but all things are possible with God. [Gen. 18:14; Job 42:2.]”Matthew 19:23-26 As it is written, I have made you the father of many nations. He was appointed our father in the sight of God in Whom he believed, Who gives life to the dead and speaks of the nonexistent things that He has foretold and promised as if they [already] existed. [Gen. 17:5.]”Romans 4:17 WHEN ABRAM was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, I am the Almighty God; walk and live habitually before Me and be perfect (blameless, wholehearted, complete). And I will make My covenant (solemn pledge) between Me and you and will multiply you exceedingly. Then Abram fell on his face, and God said to him, As for Me, behold, My covenant (solemn pledge) is with you, and you shall be the father of many nations. Nor shall your name any longer be Abram [high, exalted father]; but your name shall be Abraham [father of a multitude], for I have made you the father of many nations. And I will make you exceedingly fruitful and I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. Genesis 17:1-6 “Abraham believed God" (Romans 4:3). He was Divinely Persuaded by God Himself. Abraham Knew God Personally. He Had a Personal Relationship and Personal Confidence in the One in Whom Had Promised and Utterly Trusted in Him.The real secret of Abraham was being a friend of God. He knew God to be always Faithful, and Good so He Could Take God at His Word. And God Wants You to Now the His Good Good Father and You Can Take Him at His Word. He stepped out from all that he knew and loved, and went forth as God directed because he trusted the word of God, and new all things are possible with God.God called things that are not as though they were" (Rom. iv. 17). The Holy Spirit in you Divinely Persuades You of God's marvelous ability to give life to dead things. This is vital to understand because it shows that no matter how cold, dead, and lifeless your situation might seem, God can and will empower you with divine life if you will Believe and stand firm in His Divine Persuasion and Focus on His Ability to Do Anything for Him and Not Your Situation. And to “call those things that are not as though they are.” Just as God said, "As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations, before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.” God is in the doing the impossible business. He certainly is able and does reverse impossible situations in the lives of His children. Just as the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Genesis 18:13-14 Just as the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Genesis 18:13-14 God wants to bring new life to those areas that you thought were beyond repair. He desires to “quicken” literally to make alive, to infuse life in, to resurrect, or to empower with divine life your dreams, hopes, and aspirations and restore you to wholeness in every area — your mind, your body, your finances, your marriage, your relationships, etc.

3 Invaluable Lessons from David Niese You can help other people out and get what you need at the same time. If your project staff is happy, everything starts falling into place. It’s not enough to just be right – you need to spend more time on collaboration and listen to what people are saying and what is going on. This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with David Niese about effectively implementing partnering within your team and organization and why taking the hardline when it comes to managing projects doesn’t always yield a positive outcome. About Guest David Niese (1:16) David Niese was one of the trainers for the Caltrans Fundamentals of Partnering. David helped train over 4,000 different project professionals on the fundamentals of making Partnering work on Caltrans projects. David is a Project Executive at Granite Construction in their large project group. David’s Journey to Becoming Project Executive at Granite Construction (2:50) David grew up in the industry and did a lot of surveying with his dad He got a job at a small engineering firm in San Bernadino, CA He worked with Caltrans for 15 years and then jumped to the private industry For the last five years, David has been at Granite Construction How David Went from SOB to Collaborative Leader (5:50) In his first job as a Resident Engineer, David was a hardliner. He expected his contractor to know what he was supposed to do, and David stuck to the contract. In the end, his contractor went bankrupt and in stepped a new company. David learned that you can hold a contractor to the contract, but it is bad for business; but all the contractors start spending more money. It costs the owner more money if they have to deal with a lot of claims. There are always things we can do to help each other on the contract. If the project staff is happy on both sides, everything just falls into place. Your quality is better, your safety is better, your production rates are better because everyone is happy coming to work. Everyone is working toward the common goal of finishing the project. David’s Advice to Someone Who’s Just Starting Their Career (15:15) Don’t let the daily grind keep you from seeing the big picture When you focus on the little things only, you don’t fully understand what the ramifications might be A mentor is extremely important to have the right perspective How to Lead Your Team When There’s Conflict (17:30) Have your partnering process in place, be sure that you listen and understand the position of other people You can help other people out and get what you need at the same time Listen to see where the conflict might be coming from and to figure out how you can avoid it Using a facilitator can really help What People Can Do to Lead Their Team When It’s Struggling (19:45) The Escalation Ladder can be a huge help with things - go up the chain so you can relieve yourself and others from having to worry about the issue The person at the next level of escalation will probably have a different view on the problem Don’t take things personally, there will always be contract disputes Don’t let conflict affect the work going on in the field Looking for a fair and equitable resolution to the problem is doing your job David’s Approach to His Projects with Alternative Processes (25:23) In the bid/build world there is no qualification process, but in the alternative delivery world, your past performances will affect you getting future work. If you’re going up a company that had no claims and you did, that will put you at a disadvantage. Your ability to successfully complete a contract becomes important in alternative delivery. What David Would Do if He Had an Owner Who Was Not Going to Be Fair and Equitable (27:48) If there is an owner with a reputation for not resolving disputes, they choose not to work with those owners. There’s so much work out there, they get to pick and choose who they do and don’t want to work with. You need to look for an owner who will match your core values. How David Overcame the Very Worst Moment He Faced (29:07) The worst moment was also his worst Partnering ever. There were many disputes, but he didn’t let the contract disputes affect the quality of the work they were doing in the field. In the next project they understood what to do and not do to never let that happen again. He tries not to override subordinates in the escalation ladder and resolve at the lowest level possible. David’s Zone of Genius (31:49) A manager should not be judged on how they manage the “A” players. A true manager can take the “C” players and turn them into “B” players and take the “B” players and turn them into “A” players. You have to keep things from becoming a stumbling block. David is good at looking for future problems down the road and letting employees know before they get there. Always have a contingency plan in place. The Best Advice David’s Ever Received (35:19) It’s not enough to just be right. If not everyone’s on board with what you think is right, it’s not enough. You need to spend more time on collaboration and listen to what people are saying and what is going on. Here is the Oxford definition: "a natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life." It is universally known that the phrase refers specifically to extreme weather events events and ocean/seismic activity. He HAD to use that phrase to keep his trivia question difficult enough to not give away that the answer was a disease, but in my opinion it just indicates that the question should be framed a different way. KMC Podcast #53- Sabbaticals and Sabbaths New Year New You! John Tillman Welcome back to the KMC Podcast, this episode is part of the Getting Started Right series and part of getting started right in a new year or new ministry is to make sure you are leading yourself well. Most people in ministry I encounter where Tired as a badge of honor and while they know its a problem, don’t seem too concerned enough to change. I feel God is prompting me more and more to call out our ministry leaders and say, we need to lead better by leading ourselves better. We MUST take care of our health, and our souls better in 2019 if we are going truly make an impact for the kingdom. So I recently read a blog post from my friend John Tillman about Chance the rapper who declared to all the world he was taking a sabbatical to study the Bible- Welcome to the Podcast John John Tell me about the article and what you learned about Chance the Rapper? I was struck by how Chance was so honest, recognizing that he couldn’t teach his new nephew about faith if he didn’t know the Bible. He was willing to admit his need and do something radical to address it. His intention and faith seem genuine and I thought that there were some smart things about what he did that we could learn from. Ok, so in the blog you point out three great points about his sabbatical plan, I’d like to chat about those- 1 He had an outward, behavioral goal- Why was that so striking to you? Chance has been open about regretting his addiction to cigarettes. He has engaged in a fast from smoking, intending to make it a permanent lifestyle change. A sabbatical should be different from other times. One way to help mark the time as different, sacred, is to make a physical, tangible, measurable change in diet or activity. When you undertake a sabbatical, consider adding a fast of some kind and adding an activity that is out of your norm. Do something physical, tangible, and measurable to mark the time as different. He had a personal knowledge goal Chance admitted that he was raised in faith and believed, but he had never read the Bible and wanted to increase his familiarity with it. He also has read from widely varied Christian authors such as Tim Keller and John Baillie. When you engage in a sabbatical, direct engagement with God through the scriptures and prayer should be your primary focus. However, consider adding to your sabbatical some other reading. When choosing reading material for a sabbatical, resist the urge to read that best seller by that famous Christian author or pastor whom you already follow on Twitter. Reach farther. Instead of reading the pastor you already like, read the guy he learned from. Then read the guy that guy learned from. Another direction would be to try reading outside your usual disciplines. Instead of reading theology, read about data science, or gaming theory, or design thinking, or marketing, or creative solutions in the marketplace. He Had a generational goal The inspiration for Chance’s sabbatical journey is ministry to the next generation. In the post announcing his intentions, Chance shared a video of him holding his nephew. Chance’s intention in all of his learning and study is to give his nephew “knowledge and tools.” Jesus taught that the Sabbath, and by extension sabbaticals, are for us. But that doesn’t mean that they only focus on our personal needs. Jesus came out of his recorded sabbatical times with power, purpose, and vision for his ministry. So can you. When you enter a sabbatical, have a goal related to how you will pass on, how you will act on, and how you will lead based on what you learn or experience. A helpful tool for this would be to pray a Prayer of Examen. This prayer is a moment designed to refocus our lives and re-tune our hearts and souls. It is an opportunity to reflect, to find God in our midst, and to assess our motives, desires, struggles, and opportunities. For more on the Prayer of Examen see this short guide from The Park Forum. Tiny Sabbaticals- Ok, now before we get into some practical ideas of how we can apply this idea. Lets talk the concept of sabbatical, because I already hear the listener saying, sure John, I don’t have the money like Chance, I don’t have the time like Chance, I can’t do a sabbatical. I don’t have time, I don’t have money, I don’t really know how i would? What would you say? What can a sabbatical look like? What should one plan to include in it? *Prayer *Worship *Fasting *Readings *Hikes *solitude You don’t have to go long distances, stay a long time, or spend much money to engage in the practice of sabbaticals. Instead of going somewhere far away go somewhere close. Jesus recommended prayer in a closet. Find a “closet” that is close to home that you can hide away in. It could be a literal closet, a church member’s lake house, a friend’s home out of town, or a neighborhood coffee shop or bookstore with a comfortable chair. Take an afternoon. Take a day. Take a weekend. Sit. Read. Walk. Pray. It’s that simple and that complicated. So let’s go back and make some ministry related application- for a leader who’s been struggling with IF they should design a sabbatical plan. Outward Goals- what should a leader have as outward goals? Anything different than the norm. Don’t do something you normally do. Do something that you don’t normally do. Stop playing a game you usually play. Stop reading a social media site you normaly read. Walk instead of sit. Take the stairs. Walk in a park. Add something new. Take a class. Try new recipes. Knowledge Goals- what do these look like? Again, step outside your norm. Do and learn something that will expand your knowledge, not just lead you to the same sources for the same answers you already get anyway. Read the Bible. Read about new technologies. Read a first century theologian. Read a reformation scholar. Read someone outside your denominational affiliation. Generational Goals- what and why are these so important? Learn, rest, and work with the purpose in mind of passing on the benefit. Pray at the beginning seeking a purpose. Pursue it during your sabbatical. Then look back at the end, asking God to help you see. What changed? What did you learn? Should you slow down? Speed up? Change course? Pass it on; So to wrap this up- Why should a person listening to this start today and schedule and make a sabbatical plan? 1-Start weekly and daily. Start small. God says, don’t despise small beginnings. God says be faithful in a little. Start by having a sabbath each week. And having a time of prayer, reading, and reflection each day. Distraction and overwork that prevent us from doing this are problems of value. We don’t properly value the sabbath. Otherwise, we wouldn’t miss it. Like the tithe that has to come out of your bank account first, take your sabbath out of the week first. 2-Plan larger times. Put it on the calendar and tell people about it. Tell your spouse. Tell your boss. Tell your friends. It’s okay to broadcast it. 3-Go small before you go big. Don’t plan a month long sabbatical if you’ve never taken an afternoon. Get humble and do what you can achieve. Through this your ability to plan and execute improves. Wrap Up- John tell us about where your writings are posted and how people can subscribe- The Park Forum theparkforum.org Subscription link https://mailchi.mp/theparkforum/m-f-daily-email-devotional
Who loves YOU, and who do you LOVE!? Really don't need to expand any more than that beyond saying He Was a Real Pain In The Neck. And then He Had to Split. That Hit The Spot. Enjoy the episode folks! If you could leave a rating and review on iTunes that'd be really appreciated too.
Learn why new cars can be a deterrent to your wealth and what opportunity cost means. Maybe you like cars or you just want a new car. Perhaps you want to buy a new car because it’s for safety (too many miles), or status (need it for your job/image), or change of objective (had a child), etc. Whatever your reasons for a new car, re-think it because cars are one of the largest deterrents to your wealth. Take a doctor who grosses $1 million a year, but has virtually no wealth accumulated. How does that happen? Moves from house to house. Buys a new car every 3 years. I’ve talked about the cost of moving - commissions, loan fees, remodeling to sell, remodeling after purchase, etc. Buying homes and cars too frequently can be deterrents to your wealth. For now, let’s just focus on the car. He HAD to have a new BMW 650i. MSRP is $99,000. Let’s look at the true cost over time, which is what would the money be worth if you had invested it? We call that Opportunity Cost. What is the depreciation on the car? According to edmunds.com, depreciation on a BMW 650i is: 1. $10,168 2. $5,837 3. $4,987 4. $4,249 5. $3,627 Total in 5 years = $28,868 Mind you, this is happening every 5 years and total depreciation is $29,000. Let’s call it an even $30,000 for ease of math. Over 5 years it’s $30,000 in depreciation. Let’s take the $6,000 depreciation, which he is getting nothing for, and see what it would amount to in 20 years after being invested in the stock market. On average, the stock market over the long term will compound at about 10% per year. We’ll take $6000 per year, invested at 10% for 20 years. Remember, this is money that is the depreciation on his car, not money he will ever see go through his fingers. It’s lost forever, like making a bad investment every 5 years and your investment is worth less. What is the opportunity cost if he had invested the $6,000 per year instead? Guess. So $6,000 x 10% x 20 years = $418,380. Can you believe it? Do you see why cars are one of the largest deterrents to your wealth? According to Kelley Blue Book, average price of a car was $36,270 in January 2018. New-car prices have increased by $1,360 (up 3.9 percent) from January 2017. Looking at edmunds.com, if you bought a car for $29,873, the minute you drive it off the lot, you’ve lost $2,559! By the end of year 1 you’ve lost $5,687, year 2 another $3,607, year 3 another $3,173, year 4 another $2,813 and by year 5 another $2,524. Guess what the total depreciation is over 5 years? $17,804 or a 60% loss! According to edmunds.co, a new car loses 11% the minute you leave the lot, during the first 5 years loses 15% to 25% each year. After 5 years the car is worth 37% of what you paid for it at the dealership. Let’s say you invested the $17,804 or $3,560 per year. Invested for 20 years at 10% is $248,238. Invested for 30 years at 10% is $706,278. Remember, you’re not shelling out cash, this is money slipping through your fingers! These are the kinds of things that make a difference to your wealth. It’s the choices you make. Does that make sense? Hopefully you agree that new cars are not helping your wealth. What can you do? Here’s 5 things for you to do: Buy gently used cars in mint condition with low miles. That way a lot of the depreciation is already gone. 2. Don’t buy new cars until you have achieved your financial goals. Until then, it’s not a good investment and the opportunity cost is too high. 3. Buy buy cars that are too expensive. Put a limit on how much you spend. 4. Listen to Be Wealthy & Smart podcast #10 about cars that last for 250,000 miles. 5. Beware of cars that are coming from the Houston flood! There are thousands of damaged cars from Houston that will hit the auction blocks. Most used cars will be fine. Make sure your dealer didn’t buy the car at an auction. It’s better to know who the previous owner was and where they lived. Do your due diligence before you buy.

Today I talk with Jim Kalbach, author of Mapping Experiences, an amazing resource for anyone who wants to help a group of people gain alignment..alignment on what's actually happening in their organization, with their customers, and alignment on where to go next. This season, I'm investigating ideas and tools around thinking alone and thinking together. Thinking together matters because whenever we meet, it's a chance to make a choice...and if our thinking is habitual, based on power dynamics or just plain haphazard, the choices we make will be habitual and haphazard! Great facilitators help groups of people think together in amazing ways...Jim is an ace facilitator and I'm thrilled to talk with him today! If you want to see our faces, there is a video in YouTube of our conversation. As Jim said (to my heart's delight) It's not the map, it's the conversation *about* the map that creates real change. The map is just a durable artifact of the conversation, and lasts longer, communicates better, than a report or slide deck. It's also something people build together, so it gains power from the IKEA effect...people love what they invest time in. We also talked about the powerful draw the idea of "mapping" has for people: It's like asking for a name brand mustard! He got a call from an amazing organization called Hedayah way out in Dubai to do a mapping workshop for former radical extremists to talk about their journeys out of radicalization and into helping others. He Had to figure out *where* in the long journey of the extremist's experience the work needed to be focused...and we talk about how he got it wrong and how it got it right. Some key takeways from our conversation are in the show notes on the conversation factory.com: 1. The Map Frames the Narrative, but leave it incomplete, creating a lean forward Conversation This is one really interesting takeaway from our conversation: Jim is very intentional about how much to do *with* the group, live and in person and how much to build *for* them, through research and his own reflective process. Leaving it incomplete helps people enter into the world of the map and make it their own. Showing a perfect artifact is *not* the point of these tools. He sees it as a proposal, an opening to the conversation, like a first offer in a negotiation. 2. Alignment is not Groupthink: Breaking the team up helps them work together honestly Jim calls these maps he makes "alignment diagrams" because they help the team see the same world. But the time spent with people in the room isn't about getting everyone to agree on your map, it's about getting everyone's perspectives out and up on the wall and rebuilding the map to match everyone's understanding, knowledge and experience 3. Where to play, how to win: Focus on a portion of the map for clearer insights Hendauah asked him to come to Dubai and bring together former gang bangers, white supremacists and Al Qaida members to talk about and map their experiences. T here's a long arc of that experience...and the organization wanted the focus on a particular *moment* in the journey: Not the radicalization journey, not the de-radicalization journey...but the journey of those who choose to help de-radicalize others. Figuring that focus out took a lot of conversation with his partners in Dubai. The more specific you are about your journey "moment" the more clear your work can be...you can zoom in on what's really crucial...and situate that moment in a larger arc. 4. Map the workshop experience, manage the energy Find an arc and a flow for your mapping workshop: Just like your customers have experiences that you can map, you can map the experience of the team as you think about how they will enter into the workshop, what the flow of energy will be...and always have a plan B: keeping things moving along. Jim talks about shifting the energy and activities between introspective, conversational and game-based. We also talk about remote workshopping and more! Links and notes mapping experiences https://www.amazon.com/Mapping-Experiences-Complete-Creating-Blueprints/dp/1491923539 Hedayah: The NGO Jim worked with to map the experiences of violent extremists http://www.hedayah.ae/ this book isn't just about software, it's about any challenge with people: brand, customer experiences, social challenges the hero's journey https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero%27s_journey star wars and the hero's journey (a fun episode of the ted radio hour) https://www.npr.org/programs/ted-radio-hour/458496650/the-heros-journey being thoughtful about who to bring along with you on the pre-work interviews it's not the diagram, it's the process of building the diagram The chronology of the experience phases follows a certain logic (although arbitrary), along with tracking Doing/Thinking/Feeling at each moment The 5 Es of Experience Design: A handy frame (two articles I've written about it on medium: https://medium.com/@dastillman/the-5es-and-6ps-experience-inventory-a-conversation-guide-849696b5dc70 https://medium.com/@dastillman/facilitation-means-designing-conversations-24bac966076e Have a Goal at the end of the map, use Verbs Shout out to GameStorming: Looking at Game Mechanics to get teams to work together better http://gamestorming.com To get the team to read the map, get the team to give themselves (ie, their company) a letter grade at each moment in the map How do you keep the momentum of the conversation going? The Map can be the compact, compelling artifact that keeps the thread of the conversation going: A touchstone How can you get from the map to an experiment? Remote can work with the right tools, enough focus and time: Don't try to replicate the in-person experience...but a mapping workshop is a good reason to get a geographically spread out team together. Mural.com is a great tool for this, but you *must* rethink your methods, cycle through your participants and break exercises into much smaller chunks of 3-10 minutes. To get remote to work, weave multiple tools together to give people a multi-tasking mindset *on the workshop*...using chat, surveys, mural and other tools. The remote design thinking workshop with Glenn Fajardo and Kal Joffres with the D.School. https://dschool.stanford.edu/classes/long-distance-design Don 't have mixed remote/located teams: different paces of communication make it very hard The experience map can become a container for the interviews, empathy and notes as the workshop progresses.

Such as He had He Gave (The Holy Ghost) Acts 8:15-17 (KJV) 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Again Paul Laid Hands- Giving what HE HAD by The HOLY GHOST Acts 19:1-6(KJV) 19 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. The Spirit that Dwelt With them, is IN THEM John 14:16-17(KJV) 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. You Can INPART GIFTS BY THE SPIRIT- STRENGTHEN Your Brethren Romans 1:1 (KJV) 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; Romans 1:11(AMP) 11 For I long to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift, to strengthen and establish you; Grace Nuggets: What you have 1st The Holy Spirit You Possess Healing You Possess Peace You Possess Wholeness You Possess Wisdom You Posses Various Gifts Behold the Goodness and Severity- They don't bear the SWORD IN VAIN Ministers of God don'e Bear the Sword in Vain Romans 13:1-4(KJV) 13 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. BOHOLD THE DAYS OF ACT- THE DAYS OF Ananias and Sapphira Acts 5:1-11 (KJV) 5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. 6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. 7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. 8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. 9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. 10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. 11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. My guest today is Matt Miller, Founder and President of School Spirit Vending, a vending machine company that helps schools fundraise internally rather than asking children to go door to door. In today’s episode, we discuss: What it felt like to be so poor that he was declined for a payday loan. How $100 opened the door to a million dollar business The importance of homeschooling and how parents are an essential (and often missing) ingredient to help children understand entrepreneurship and basic business skills. How you can quickly get started building your own vending machine empire Matt was concerned with the current fundraising model of selling magazines and popcorn and decided to do something about it. His idea was to create a vending machine business to literally keep the kids off the streets, but still allow schools a way to fundraise. Matt was a corporate guy and his parents taught him to go to school, get a job and work a 9-5 so that he can retire. Like many of us, this quickly seemed unfulfilling. He dreamed of being his own boss and could no longer stand the idea of selling his time to someone else. He HAD to become his own boss. When Matt lost his job, he was in a very difficult financial position. He had a wife and several children to support, but very little means to do so. Collecting aluminium cans only went so far. One day, in church, Matt was chatting with a friend who had recently bought a few simple gumball machine. Matt was surprised to hear that these gumball machines were actually generating noticeable revenue. Quarters can still add up quite substantially and he had to know more. After a few weeks of scouting the Internet to learn as much as possible, he and his daughters jumped in the car to purchase a single gumball machine for $100. This was the start of Matt’s appreciation and love for vending machines which is now his passion and business. He went from being broke (and not being eligible for a payday loan) to franchising a vending machine company and helping entrepreneurs and schools all over the nation learn how to generate wealth. Join us to hear more about Matt’s journey and why vending machines may be a good opportunity for you to build the lifestyle that you desire and deserve.
