15:34 The wedding 22:24 You've been around 33:56 I feel free 43:16 Black tie, white noise 55:20 Jump they say 1:05:08 Night flights 1:18:43 Pallas Athena 1:23:47 Miracle goodnight 1:30:01 Don't let me down & down 1:38:46 Looking for Lester 1:43:37 I know it's gonna happen someday 1:54:14 The wedding song
In this episode we talk to the one and only Mike Garson, pianist extraordinaire! From playing with the Spiders from Mars to improvising one of the most extraordinary passages in pop music – that utterly frenetic piano solo in Aladdin Sane – to the elegance of 2003's Reality - Garson was one of the only musicians to have played with Bowie across decades, sculpting the sound for Aladdin Sane, Pin Ups, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Black Tie White Noise, Outside, Earthling, Heathen and Reality. And, as he explains here, he was originally only hired for eight weeks…! In this episode, Mike talks us through his story, demonstrates his process live and reflects on how, almost half a century later, people still love that solo. Check out everything Garson here
Welcome back to albumtoalbum the David Bowie Albums Podcast with me Arsalan Mohammad and in this second part of our chat with David Bowie's long time collaborators Mark Plati and Sterling Campbell, we recall the making of albums including Black Tie White Noise, Earthling and of course, the great lost album of 60s tunes revisited, TOY, all of which feature in the new box set Brilliant Adventures. During the course of this episode, Mark and Sterling dig deeper into the sessions for TOY and the anecdotes come thick and fast. Do you know, for instance, what classic Bowie track inspired Sterling's drums on ‘Conversation Piece'? What was the track that Mark was invited to mix and so impressed Bowie that he ended up working with him for seven years? How many kids does Mark have? And what did Bowie think of his appearance at Glastonbury in 2000? All of these nuggets and more await you in this episode of albumtoalbum! With thanks to Mark Plati and Sterling Campbell and Julian Stockton Mark Plati is at www.mark-plati.com Please share and review this podcast and follow us at @albumtoalbum Brilliant Adventures (1992 – 2001) is out now! Welcome back to Albumtoalbum, the David Bowie albums podcast with me, Arsalan Mohammad. And it's a very exciting podcast indeed today as we welcome not one but two Bowie alumni, producer/musician Mark Plati and drummer Sterling Campbell, to talk about a new old classic lost collection of remakes, the legendary TOY. TOY was released last month as part of the Brilliant Adventures box set, which covers the 1992 – 2001 period, an era in which Sterling and Mark worked with Bowie, together or individually, on albums like Black Tie White Noise, Outside, Earthling, hours and TOY as well as some of the most high profile live shows of the era – the Glastonbury performance in 2000, the BBC Radio Theatre show of the same year and the subsequent TOY sessions, where Mark and Bowie selected a number of David's songs from the 1960s to remake and remodel with a full band. Strangely, from the perspective of 2021, when TOY was offered to Bowie's then-record label Virgin, it was met with some degree of perplexity, a distinct lack of energy and never got released, although the energy and positivity of those sessions led naturally onto 2001's magnificent Heathen. By all accounts, these were amazingly creative, enjoyable sessions, a fact that is audibly evident in the charismatic interpretations of the songs. Tunes that were barely heard by the record-buying public at the time, subsequently ignored by their creator for thirty years were now lovingly revisited by a band who knew just what to do with them. In part one of this conversation with Mark and Sterling, we begin by going back to New York in the late 70s and 1980s, rediscovering the music that shaped their lives and creative outlook. It's the stories of two future musicians growing up in the midst of a cultural new wave shaped by punk, hip hop, disco, techno - and Bowie. Fast forward to the 1990s and the pair fondly reminisce about their time in the studio working with David Bowie and his collaborators, including Brian Eno, Gail Ann Dorsey, Gerry Leonard and many others. The group dynamic was productive and creative – and hugely enjoyable. Sterling recalls Bowie's devotion to British contemporary comedy colouring the mood of sessions, with David frequently insisting on group breaks to watch videos of Alan Partridge and The Office. Mark affirms how, in the studio, Bowie would pounce on random ideas and accidents, a characteristic recalled by so many of his collaborators over the years. The pair also reflect on the shifts in pop culture and technology from the time of the Beatles to the present day as successive generations have accrued a shared pop culture history and debate how the pandemic might change things for the future.
Hey, remember that time that David Bowie said he wanted to create a new form of melodic house music? Of course you do, don't pretend otherwise. This episode we are looking at his 'Black Tie, White Noise' album from April 1993 and it's definitely pretty hard to categorise. It was hailed as a return to form by some people at the time but does it hold up nearly thirty years after release? In other music news we get to have a chat about acts like LL Cool J, The Fall and Poison among many others but it's realistic to say that the majority of our time is taken up being surprised by the amount of saxophone (and other horns) all over the Bowie album. We also mention the fact that this episode goes out to the memory of the wonderful Phil Jerrod who was a stand-up comic and good friend to Dave who sadly passed far too young just a few weeks back. And to regular listener and friend of the show Mat Davies who similarly left us just recently as well - our hearts go out to friends and family of both of these truly lovely, creative and kind men. As usual you can check all of our social media for stupid pictures and more nonsense, all links available on our website www.pclpodcast.com

Welcome to the 52nd Anniversary Concert Celebration of Bowie vs. Dylan!!! With your host, David Bowie!!!!! David Bowie: Thanks so much, you're all so lovely! Well, this is grand, isn't it? It's just me and Bob Dylan, together at last for a special tribute to- Backstage Lackey #1: (rushes over discreetly and whispers in Bowie's ear, for, like, a while.) David Bowie: Well, folks, it seems there's been a misunderstanding, I've NOT been invited to perform at long last with Bob and fulfill the secret prophecy of most of the world's religions. (long uncomfortable pause) I'm just here to lend my wonderfully rich voice and presence to the proceedings. It seems no-one, not even my record label, will release me singing or playing anything at all. Just me in tuxedo attire and speaking soothingly as if I was a particular form of sleep aid. Say...that gives me an idea! But anyway, if I wasn't invited to sing, then I guess no-one was. John Mellencamp, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Eddie Vedder, Tracy Chapman, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Winter, Ron Wood, Richie Havens, Neil Young, Chrissie Hynde, Eric Clapton, The O'Jays, The Band but not Robbie Robertson, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roger McGuinn, The Clancy Brothers, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Roseanne Cash, and Shawn Colvin, and Sinead O'Connor: WE were invited! Bob Dylan: Heeeey, sorry I'm late. I was trying very hard to pretend that I would come by rehearsing and promising to come, but then be so late or have some excuse as to why I had to skip it altogether, but I lost track of how late I wanted to be and accidentally showed up for the at least the last 1/3 of this concert devoted to me. Everyone: Blowin' in the Wind, anyone? On this 1993 edition of Bowie vs. Dylan.

It's with heavy hearts we share with your are latest episode, recorded four days prior to the passing of David Bowie. With Black Star, his 26th album just released, we decided to revisit his 1993 album Black Tie White Noise, co-produced with Nile Rodgers, who worked with Bowie on the successful Let's Dance album ten years earlier. With drum and keyboard loops influenced by the burgeoning house and early 90s dance scene, BTWN shows off Bowie's penchant for melodic hooks and Rodgers talent for infectious grooves, but the spotless production ended up sacrificing some of the emotion and left us feeling a bit cold, despite the inspired cover choices.
