Therese (Tez) Bryars brings a wealth of experience to her LNC practice. Initially, most of her work was with defense cases, and she worked as an inhouse LNC. During this time span, she gained a great deal of familiarity with nursing home cases, which is one of the main topics of this podcast. Since then, she has gone independent and both deepened and broadened her experience. Nursing home records can often be much more complex than hospital records, and, because they may cover a much longer time span, the LNC is faced with many more records. Tez gives a step-by-step approach to economically review the records appropriate to the case. She also describes how she has come to master electronic records and details her sources for necessary research, making the point that checking the date pertinent documents were written must match the time span of the case. Tez, because of her experience as both an in-house LNC and an independent one, brings a high level of understanding of the differences between these two ways of working. She particularly recommends that those starting out in this field give strong consideration to an in-house setting. She also describes how, in her independent role, she devotes considerable time to calling attorneys' offices, and explains how she focuses on nurturing relationships with the paralegals when they answer the phone. She also emphasizes that word of mouth is the best way to get clients, which demands excellent service for existing clients. Join me in this episode of Legal Nurse Podcast to learn about going from an Inhouse LNC to an Independent LNC - Therese Bryars How are nursing home medical documents different than those from hospitals? What should you look at first in the documents? Why is it so important to examine the quality of documentation? What online resources are helpful for research involving a case? At 2:20 a.m. on this date in 1912, the luxury liner S.S. Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Of the 2201 people of on board, only 711 reached their intended destination in New York. Eight British musicians, members of the ship’s band stayed on board, reportedly playing a hymn-tune as the ship went down. In 1969, British composer Gavin Bryars, prepared a multi-media musical work titled “The Sinking of the Titanic,” which incorporated spoken interviews by Titanic survivors with a set of variations on the hymn tune played by the ship’s band. In 1985, the sunken wreck of the Titanic was rediscovered, and renewed interest led to a 1990 revival performance and recording of Gavin Bryars’s score. A few years later, composer James Horner wrote an Oscar-winning film score for director James Cameron’s Titanic–an incredibly successful cinematic dramatization of the story. Horner has written other famous film scores like those for “Aliens” and “Braveheart”—but none quite as successful as “Titanic.” That film grossed more than $600 million at the domestic box office and more than $1.8 billion worldwide. Ironically, considering this “titanic” success, the first film for which Horner composed a score was entitled “The Drought.”
The long-anticipated follow-up to Gavin Bryars’ The Fifth Century, which won The Crossing its first GRAMMY award in 2018, the 12-movement A Native Hill was premiered by the ensemble in October 2019 at their home, The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia. Wendell Berry’s text, from his 1968 essay of the same title, offers meditations on how life is, and can be, experienced, through detailed descriptions of the minutiae of rural existence, where simple natural events reveal themselves as metaphors for universal truths. Bryars has a close working and personal relationship with The Crossing, and draws on his intimate knowledge of the singers’ individual characteristics to create a further thoughtful and even more profoundly meaningful work for the ensemble. The New York Times has called Bryars’ music “accessible and defiantly personal,” and A Native Hill exemplifies his organic synthesis of sophisticated musical ideas with an earthy, insightful understanding of daily life. Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and composer Gavin Bryars in expansive conversation about their respective art forms, and what happens when they are brought together. Chaired by Dr Kimberly Campanello, Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Leeds, it’s a wide-ranging and warm conversation, illuminated by good humour and the two artists’ evident delight in discovering each other’s work in more detail. They discuss the pleasures and perils of crossing between the two disciplines, with reference to specific works by themselves and others. Excerpts from their recordings are woven throughout, including tracks by Armitage’s post rock/ambient outfit LYR, and Bryars’ extraordinary, influential 1971 work Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet.

The contemporary classical composer Gavin Bryars talks about the latest incarnation of his acclaimed 1971 work, Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet – a 12-hour overnight rendition at Tate Modern in London. The piece is based on a fragment of tape of a homeless man singing, and this performance combines the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Bryars’s own ensemble, the Southbank Sinfonia, and the participation of several homeless people. Gavin Bryars also contributes his thoughts to the question: can opera singers sing pop and vice versa? What are the main differences between a trained bel canto voice and what some would call the more natural approach taken by folk, jazz or rock singers? Music critic Anna Picard and Christopher Purves, opera singer and former member of jazz vocal group Harvey and the Wallbangers, discuss. Hailed by Zadie Smith as 'uncommonly poised and truly beautiful', the debut novelist Isabella Hammad discusses her 500-page epic The Parisian, set around the Palestinian struggle for independence in the early twentieth century. On Monday morning, all five defendants came to the fence of one of Bryars’s lots, which was near the road leading from, and about one hundred yards from his house. All of them were mounted except one, and all armed with guns, and were first outside of the fence, opposite said Green B. Bryars, who stood by his plow, called out, ‘Boys, come here." This past August, Shawn Shafner traveled to Brattleboro, VT to join Urine Diversion Summit 2016—a conference brimming with pee-ple making waves over how we “make water.” While The Puru didn’t want to disrupt the flow, he was able to divert a few participants away from micturation and into the microphone for some short interviews. Thus: The Lil’ Tinklers. In Part 1, wee-wee will learn about how eco-toilet systems succeed, and why they sometimes don’t. First, we’ll meet Daniella Saetta and Hannah Ray, two women diving unabashedly into the urinal to understand how the minerals in your pee clog up the pipes. With their help, we can put these nutrients to use and keep waterless pissoirs on the walls. Then we’ll be joined by Cat Bryars, a regional planner recently returned from a year in Oaxaca, Mexico. While there on a Fulbright, she studied how entire cities were hooked up to urine-diverting compost toilets, why they were eventually abandoned, and how these lessons can help us roll out sustainable toilets in sustainable ways. So grab a glass, sit back, and shower your ears with gold! EKKOZONE was formed with the dream of creating a truly virtuoso ensemble that would tackle the classical avant-garde, minimalism and cross-over projects equally well. Esteemed percussionist Mathias Reumert leads the ensemble and in this live program he introduces Ekkozone and we get to listen to two live recordings of Ligeti and Bryars pieces recorded at Atlas in Aarhus. 'Astrup Fearnley' is a piece talking about art, money and how to work without working at a blue-chip private art collection in Oslo during the summer of 2012. Written and read by MOA ALSKOG. Moa is Swedish, but resides in Copenhagen. She joins us live in the studio and introduces her piece.
Sara Mohr-Pietsch visits the Leicestershire home of Gavin Bryars, where he composes in a converted garage in his garden. Bryars talks about the interaction between his work and family life, how he finds the mental space he needs to write music, and the inspiration he draws into his studio from places around the world.
Gavin Bryars's mould-breaking 1971 score Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet is a work which came about almost accidentally, when Bryars found a recording of an elderly homeless man singing lines from a Victorian hymn. Cultural historian Robert Hewison makes the case for why the work is important, and commentary comes from author and musician David Toop.
