Eliot Borenstein is Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies and Vice Chancellor for Global Programs at New York University. His other books include Soviet Self-Hatred, Plots against Russia, Overkill, and Marvel Comics in the 1970s. We spoke to Eliot about how, decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many Russians today still look back to that time as a golden age; how this nostalgia for the past manifests in popular culture through films, fiction, and television series featuring time travel and alternate history; and, how even some Russians refuse to acknowledge their current government and instead insist that the USSR still exists.
Entrevista de Pablo Wende a Andrés Borenstein sobre la actualidad económica y las perspectivas para lo que viene.
Nimrod Borenstein is a brilliant composer, who was a child prodigy as both a composer and performer. His often complex music is beloved by performers and audiences alike, and has been widely recorded and performed internationally. He is also a renowned conductor, and he spoke to me about his difficult decision to cut short his career as a violin soloist in order to find alternate career options as he developed his career as a composer. Vladimir Ashkenazy has been an active champion of Nimrod's music, and you'll hear the charming story of their first meeting. Ashkenazy first conducted Borenstein's orchestral work The Big Bang and Creation of the Universe op. 52 to great acclaim, and the Chandos label released a very successful album devoted to Borenstein's music conducted by Ashkenazy featuring his Violin Concerto and orchestral works. Nimrod shares his insights about interpreting music for performers and conductors, the development of his compositional style and his views on creativity in general. Nimrod has an infectious energy in his enthusiasm for the pursuit of beauty. Nimrod has exceptional parents, and you'll hear how they met, and we start with Nimrod's close relationship to his father the renowned painter Alec Borenstein. Rooftop solar is four times more expensive in America than it is in other countries. It's also good for the climate. Should we even care about its high cost? Yes, says Severin Borenstein, an economist and the director of the Energy Policy Institute at the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business. In a recent blog post, he argued that the high cost of rooftop solar will shift nearly $4 billion onto the bills of low- and middle-income Californians who don't have rooftop solar. Similar forces could soon spread the cost-shift problem across the country. On this week's episode of Shift Key, Rob and Jesse talk with Borenstein about who pays for rooftop solar, why power bills are going up everywhere, and about whether the government should take over electric utilities. Shift Key is hosted by Robinson Meyer, the founding executive editor of Heatmap, and Jesse Jenkins, a professor of energy systems engineering at Princeton University.Mentioned:California's Exploding Rooftop Solar Cost ShiftWhat rooftop solar costs customers without it, from the California Public Advocates OfficeBorenstein on California's new income-graduated fixed electricity chargeBorenstein on what constitutes a fair electricity billJesse's upshift; Rob's downshift.--This episode of Shift Key is sponsored by…Watershed's climate data engine helps companies measure and reduce their emissions, turning the data they already have into an audit-ready carbon footprint backed by the latest climate science. Kleinman Center visiting scholar Severin Borenstein discusses California's struggle to balance residential solar growth with electricity rate equity. --- California's residential solar market is at a critical inflection point after years of strong growth. Last year the state, which has more rooftop solar than any other, lowered the net metering rate that it pays solar households for the excess electricity that they feed into the electric grid. The policy change contributed to a steep decline in residential rooftop solar installations. This could complicate the state's task of achieving 100% carbon free power in just over 20 years. Yet the reasons behind California's decision to reduce its solar subsidy are complex and reflect growing tensions over the private versus public costs of rooftop solar. These costs are particularly controversial in a state that already has among the highest electricity rates in the country, as well as aggressive targets for home electrification. On the podcast Severin Borenstein, a Kleinman Center visiting scholar and faculty director of the Energy Institute at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, discusses California's residential solar energy policies and the challenge of balancing equity, solar growth, and the pace of electrification. Borenstein also explores the lessons from California's experience that might be applied to other states where rooftop solar power growth is poised to accelerate. Severin Borenstein is a visiting scholar at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and faculty director of the Energy Institute at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. I am excited to welcome Eliot Borenstein to the podcast today to discuss his new monograph, Marvel Comics in the 1970s: The World Inside Your Head, published through Cornell University Press in 2023. Eliot is Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at New York University. He has published a number of books: Soviet-Self-Hatred: The Secret Identities of Postsocialism (Cornell University Press, 2023); Plots against Russia: Conspiracy and Fantasy after Socialism (Cornell University Press, 2019); Men without Women: Masculinity and Revolution in Russian Fiction, 1917-1929 (Cornell University Press, 2000); and Overkill: Sex Violence, and Russian Popular Culture after 1991 (Cornell University Press, 2008). Marvel Comics in the 1970s focuses on five writers, all born between 1945 and 1948, and their iconic takes on characters and titles: Steve Engelhart's Shang-Chi and Doctor Strange; Doug Moench's Master of Kung Fu; Marv Wolfman's Tomb of Dracula; Don McGregor's Black Panther and Luke Cage; and Steve Gerber's Howard the Duck. In particular, the book explores how subjectivity and the self are expressed through the unique medium and genre constraints of 1970s-era Marvel comics. John Yargo is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. He earned a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In 2023, his dissertation won the J. Leeds Barroll Prize, given by the Shakespeare Association of America. His peer-reviewed articles have been published or are forthcoming in the Journal for Early Modern Culture Studies, Early Theatre, Studies in Philology, and Shakespeare Studies. "At the end of those two months, I interviewed (two Ethiopian female runners) each of them for an hour and a half and hired a translator. What came out of those interviews was that this was a richly complicated and complex world that I knew very little about and I had barely scratched the surface. They were talking about the relationships with their family members because I had assumed – as a lot of people do – Ethiopia has this rich history of running, therefore, it must be such a prideful thing. It actually turned out that they all said that all their family members disapproved of what they were doing. There were all these things that came up that surprised me. As I later came to learn in anthropology in grad school, you should always follow and ask questions about the things that surprise you because those are the most interesting things." Hannah Borenstein is a good friend of mine who I've had the pleasure of getting to know as a member of The Magic Boost program that I help direct. She is an anthropologist and fellow at the University of Chicago. She's currently working on a book project focusing on women distance runners in Ethiopia. Beyond her academic work, she's also a freelance writer covering race, sports, gender, politics and labor across a variety of publications. She most recently published a story for World Athletics on Sinta Vissa, the Italian middle distance runner who was born in Ethiopia and now runs for the On Athletics Club. I've wanted to get her on the show for a while because she's passionate about telling the stories of Ethiopian athletes and has been a major resource for me in helping me understand some of the contexts around the athletes, their lives and when politics can intersect with it all. Hannah Borenstein is back to tackle two more classic eps with the Kidz! Helga's ruse goes awry in “Helga's Masquerade” when she mimics Lila to earn Arnold's affection, only to earn it for the wrong reasons. Local politics have kept necessary road repairs at bay for too long, so Mr. Green seeks a seat on the Hillwood City Council in “Mr. Green Runs.” It's an episode that highlights the types of people who become powerful at a local level, being a self-styled voice of the people, and what it means to become part of the civic machine.
