Back with another contribution to Vinyl Community Podcasts, host David Bianco of the YouTube channel Safe & Sound Texas Audio Excursion shares an interview conducted with the venerable mastering and audio engineer Kevin Gray.  Kevin has mastered music for every major label in every genre, including pop, rock, jazz, classical, adult contemporary, alternative, punk, heavy metal, contemporary Christian, new age, gothic, world ethnic, disco, dance, soul, blues, and hip-hop / rap. In addition, Kevin has to his credit more than a hundred top ten and Grammy award winning records, and dozens of RIAA certified gold and platinum albums and singles. In this interview he shares integral parts of his journey to becoming a premier audio mastering engineer, beginning way back at the age of eighteen to the present day with the business he operates, Cohearent Audio. You'll hear about mentors in Kevin's career along the way, the importance of plating in the record production process, his thoughts on half-speed mastering and lacquer availability, and additional insights into the full chain process of bringing a recording to life on the vinyl format. For the extra session of BONUS TRAX following the latest SURFACE NOISE podcast, we take a trip down mammary lane (pun intended) as we revisit a livestream on YouTube that was key to bringing many of our panelists together - The Rachel's Ghost daily livestream on YouTube.  Brought more into focus via a short documentary from director Greg Elmer, "The TV Show" presents the background into the hostess - Rachel Williams - and a world inside the Vinyl Community that ultimately became a hub for connectivity for many of the record collectors who flock to YouTube in search of news, information, and entertainment inside the collective.  Greg's film initially sets the stage for a poignant two days in that livestream's history with Election Day 2024 in the US, and the fallout the following day. The film also delves into many areas behind this "trans woman of color", her loving wife Sue, and the cast of "characters" affiliated with the show on those days.  Disclosure: We originally had planned to have Greg on to speak about the film, but scheduling issues presented themselves and he was unable to join. In his stead, the dais gave longer opinions on the film, that environment, and what story we felt was (or wasn't) told in those 33 minutes of film. He was generous enough to provide screening copies for us to review, which we greatly appreciate, and wish him and the project well going forward. Fauna [05:26] "To Ecstasy" Southeast of Saturn, Vol. 2: Midwest Shoegaze/Dream Pop/Space Rock Third Man Records TMR-750 2022 I also knew a lot of folks from Minneapolis, where Fauna hail from. This track is from their 1992 release Everafter. Glen Campbell [09:23] "Southern Nights" Southern Nights Capitol SO-11601 1977 Glen takes an excellent turn with Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights" (https://youtu.be/mCscZ2tPFmI?si=0lfs02BFzVpS3aIf) originally recorded in 1975. Glen heard that version and was reminded of his childhood in Arkansas. This single made it to number 1 on the charts, and the album made it as high as 22 on the Billboard 200. This album also just cracked the Billboard 200 here in the US, making it to number 192. This single did actually make it into the US Billboard dance charts, going as high as 47. The album reached 11 on the country charts and 120 on the Billboard 200. This single also hit 11 on the country charts and 14 on the pop chart. Curtis Harding [16:08] "Freedom" Soul Power Burger Records BRGR600 2014 Debut outing from this Atlanta musician. Describing his sound as "slop 'n soul", this one track has a definite Arthur Lee feel. Lou Rawls [18:49] "A Whole Lotta Woman" Soulin' Capitol Records T 2566 1966 Not a whole lotta love, not a whole lotta Rosie, but a whole lotta woman. John Coltrane with Red Garland [21:27] "Theme for Ernie" Soultrane Prestige 7142 1958 One of Coltrane's showcases for his distinctive sheets of sound style. Les and Larry Elgart and their Orchestra [26:24] "You're My Thrill" Sound Ideas Columbia CL 1123 1958 Hailing from Pompton, New Jersey, these brothers developed their "Elgart Sound" in 1952 and released over half a dozen albums before parting after this album to pursue their musical interests. Mary Martin et al [30:02] "The Lonely Goatherd" The Sound of Music (Original Broadway Cast) Columbia Masterworks KOL 5450 1959 Now that's what I call yodeling! Pre-Julie Andrews obviously. Mary Martin was perhaps best known as playing the title role in the Broadway production of Peter Pan. For this convo I'm joined by Friend of the Show (FOS) Matt from the YouTube channel Vinyl Reckoning as we explore the whats and whys as to how record collecting is a hobby often prone to tactics, commentaries, and attitudes that can not be as inviting or inclusive as we'd hope it can be. Is this a generational thing? Does every hobby seem to have so-called "gatekeeping" to new entries young and old? Or is it just a bi-product of our internet culture run amok? Despite being partially the result of Irish immigration, I am not sentimental, which is why I chose the shortest track for this collection. Aloha Buddies! One constant in the ever changing record collecting hobby of ours is the pre-imminent tool we use to grow and develop our collections: Discogs. Unquestionably the largest vinyl record database out there, it has made it easier and more accessible to collect our favorite pieces of music, predominantly on vinyl. Likewise, the marketplace aspect of the platform has helped to bridge the divide from the rare and limited releases to collectors across the globe. In the past few weeks, the head leadership at Discogs has popped up on a couple Vinyl Community channels to discuss their business, and the timing of these chats without any high level launch/product change/etc. is curious (to me). Another channel in the community (Tom c/o High Rant District) also noticed this and recently shared some takes that pushed my curiosity into overdrive. This 'sode talks about those confluences, my own thoughts on Discogs in it's current state, and things that I strongly feel need to be addressed to continue to give buyers and sellers alike confidence in using the platform (even in the face of next to no competition in this space; a space they have essentially created themselves).
